In three words? Delicious, French, Pricey. The Bread Peddler is a perfect spot to come for a amazing breakfast or lunch, or just to grab a loaf for home. I initially avoided this place because I heard that their prices are ridiculous, and I can see how one might perceive it that way. Pastries, even the small ones, are 3-5 dollars. Their house-made sandwiches are about 7, and that's with no extras. I look at it this way, at Starbucks you can pay 3 bucks for a much shittier scone than what you will get here. At Starbucks, you are paying for convenience, at the Bread Peddler you are paying for quality. It's up to the buyer to make that choice. I, for one, find their mouthwatering pastries, plates and drinks to be worth the money. I also had the pleasure of buying my birthday cake from here. Stopped by here today for some baked goods on my way home from vacation. OK, I stopped for some Chocolate Corks and fortunately got the last two so it was worth the detour. Today I thought I would try something different so I asked the friendly staff how they liked the cookies. They gladly shared their opinion and said the chocolate cookie was one of their favorites. Came with with a family member for a Sunday brunch while i was in Olympia. We were greeted and quickly seated. Which i was surprised as it was 10am on a Sunday. The decor is really cute and cozy and the place looks very clean. I like that. They took our orders, i got a hot cocoa and a buckwheat crepe with spinach, Swiss and ham. Our food came out about 15 minutes later, and my crepe and hot cocoa both looked very good. I'll be honest that my crepe was a little dry and lacking flavor which i can't put my finger on, but i ate most of it. I almost asked for hot sauce but decided not to. My step dad ate every bite of his ham and cheese crepe and was totally happy with it :) We were still in the mood for something sweet so we ordered the lemon crepe to share. This was perfection! Tart lemon juice, with a touch of powdered sugar sprinkled on top and it was perfect! All in all i was happy that i tried this place. I've never been a fan of crepes but after making the trip downtown Olympia and discovering this crepe bistro, I became a fan. The environment was really friendly and the place is decorative with its minimalist-like style. The atmosphere makes it a great place for cute dates and long conversations. The staff is really friendly! However we did have a waitress that messed up on our order, but she bounced back and was very apologetic. The food was great! I've had many crepes in my life, but I felt like this experience was different and will refine your tastes. It's like a level up from your average crepe from a kiosk. Let me warn you that the sweet crepes will fill you up fast. The savory ones will take you on a journey. The flavors balance out and are just right! The Bread Peddler. I have a love-hate relationship with the BP. It is an interesting space that HADN'T figured out what it wanted to be. Is it a bakery? Is it a restaurant? How is it organized? Maybe part of the Peddler's issue is they opened the Peddler BISTRO around the corner. It serves the exact same menu but in a sit down, fancier space... without the baked goods. And an alcohol license. Maybe the confusion is the diversification of the two. Anyway. Bread Peddler is a bakery with a HUGE kitchen and with six breakfast items... if you're not going with a pastry. I'm happy to say that yes, they have figured some of their issues out. They changed up the furniture, moved the display cases, put the menu board BACK UP and the ingredients are killer. It's busy. Stand in line to order with 15 of your new friends. They doubled up the resisters to help with the people flow which works MUCH better. Instead of giving you a number, which in my opinion is a better method, they take your name and yell it out when your food is ready. The wait is long and they haven't quite mastered orders yet as they yelled my name twice and was made the same plate AGAIN but eh. It's a weird system in this space only because it's crowded and if you can't hear the server, they just keep yelling your name. It seems like they are working out the kinks. You bus your own table. Station is by the wall on the left of the restaurant. My staple is the poached egg. They tend to over cook their bread making it more of a crustini. Last time I was here, it came on burnt toast, the poached egg was a hard boil, meaning no runny goodness, and overall? A MASSIVE bummer. THIS TIME, I ordered the Classic Breakfast and it was the bomb. No overlooked eggs, awesome slabs of bacon, no burnt bread. The potatoes weren't my favorite as they are whole hockey pucks. When you open them up, there isn't enough seasoning to make them work (and salt and pepper are at the station next to the register! Maybe put them on the table?) Love this place! Everything made from scratch, house made bacon, yum! My favorite is the rosemary chicken topped with a creamy rosemary mushroom sauce. You can tell so much work goes into the preparation of the crepe fillings and sauces, not to mention the garnish, thinly sliced scallions. I'm impressed. I went in to the bistro and had an overall good experience. The waitress was friendly and attentive, which is the only reason this review has two stars instead of one. HOWEVER, afterwards I went in to the actual bakery and ordered some bread and a latte to go. When she called out my order for the drink it was was not in a to go cup. I let her know and she proceeded to dump my latte in a to go cup. Normally if someone messes up your order, they will remake it. Anyone with common sense would know that if you pour a latte into another cup there won't be any more foam at the top. Also, the coffee will cool down because you are circulating air through it. To add insult to injury she spilled some while pouring it into the to go cup, and asked if it was okay. Obviously not, but at that point I just wanted to leave and took it. read more

I got breakfast here 2x already. Kinda gets pricey. I really enjoy their buttery croissants and their other pastries are great. I had parmesan scone last time and it was great. Their lavender vanilla latte was also great. I also like their warm apple cider since it isnt overly sweet, but it is still very sweet. I got classic breakfast last time. The bacon was very very salty but luckily it balanced out better with the poached egg, potatoes, and the bread. Sadly one of my eggs wasnt runny like a good poached egg should have been. The food here is great. The Bread Peddler's bread is Euro-tasty, the cheeses are excellent, and the pastries are delicious. And the prices are higher but you are truly paying for better quality. However, the experience leaves much to be desired. Upon entering, the numerous tables that choke the front entrance make it difficult to get to the front counter. And since the restaurant is so popular, the line that snakes around this area is ridiculous - awkward for those ordering and uncomfortable for those eating at the tables. I've also had numerous occasions where the restaurant is out of what I wanted, or down to the very last sandwich that I am eyeing just to be bought by the person in front of me. Talk about frustrating! Is it that difficult to make enough food for the day, or at least keep up with demand during the course of the day? I just don't get it. Lastly, I am often surprised by how unorganized and unfriendly the staff behind the counter are. The entire process stresses me out by its poor execution. So, a bunch of grooooovy little hippie chicks got together and started a bakery slash café. This is where they ended up. The baked goods here are spectacular; they're great recipes perfectly executed. The food is fantastic too. I'd have to say that the service is very charming and usually reliable, but they really fell on their faces trying to bring us our breakfast this past weekend. Judging by how long it took them to find their mistake, figure it out, and correct it, the pastries are not the only things here that are thoroughly freshly baked. Ba dump chish. To start, you're right in downtown Oly. This makes it easy to get here no matter if you're in the area already or just passing through--so, if you're road tripping like we were, it's easy to find from the freeway and get back en route. There's a big parking lot next door and it's a great reclaimed little commercial spot. Never mind how warped the floors are in front of the pastry case--the changes in temp and humidity in here, combined with what's probably some old wood, give it some character. Not to mention some spring in your step when you're ogling the cookies. There are tables all over in two rooms; if you head to your left you'll get table service. There's a big chalkboard behind the counter that's repeated on table menus. There are a dozen people bustling around the kitchen, counter, and tables on a busy weekend morning. We ordered coffee from the French press--fantastically dark and flavorful with relatively mild acidity. We also ordered bacon and eggs, and eggs en cocotte. This is where things got problematic. The menu warns you that the eggs en cocotte require 12 minutes of cook time. That's fine. We're in no hurry. 20 minutes later, the waitress stopped by to apologize, explaining that they had dropped the ticket in the kitchen. She confirmed our orders and said they would rush this round. 15 minutes passed. By then we were bored and hungry and checked out the pastry case. They gave us an apple fritter and a "mud bay crunch" on the house. Nice touch! Cheering us up. The crunch was sort of a cookie, but a little too crumbly to eat out of your hand, and less sweet than typical cookies. It was pretty amazing, actually. Cranberries in cookies are a great idea. The apple fritter gave my mom breakfast the next day, and she loved it. So we go back to the table and still 15 minutes further pass. WTF? We're now over 45 minutes from placing our order. Every other table seems to be getting prompt service--which speaks well of their service in general, but kinda makes us wonder whether they're mad at us or something. Waiting this long is kinda stupid. They're not messing around with the food, though--perfect bacon and eggs, the eggs en cocotte have tons of flavor without seeming like butter and salt bombs, and are cooked perfectly. You'd expect the toast at a place like this to be fantastic, and it is. Crunchy, chewy, explosively flavorful. The sourdough ferments for three days on a sourdough starter that's been around for years. Soooo...amazing coffee, bread, sweets, and food. Exemplary service, more or less. But five-star screw-ups in the kitchen. They should have comped one of the meals, maybe both, after the second round of delays. The comp pastries were great, and helped a lot, but that was after one PITA delay. I'll probably give this place one more shot because everything on the plate and in the cup is so good. read more

On the return trip from Seattle, we left very early. At some point you have to stop and get something to eat, else like the car, you'll run out of fuel. Olympia seemed as good a place as any but there was some difficulty finding the right one. Even then, this wasn't it. Now, don't get me wrong, I appreciate a good bakery and I don't expect them to cater to my every whim, but maybe you could have one item for me. I don't think it's too much to ask. Baked goods everywhere with a few breakfast samplings along the way. When I say few, I mean it. They were very accommodating with my dietary but it took awhile to figure it out. It's hard for me not to get my grump on anyway. If you're a bakery with goodies, you should have a treat for me, please. The dish I ended up with was very good anyway. They modified the Poached Egg on Chèvre Toast: Pesto Chèvre spread on toast with balsamic glaze and herbs. My poached eggs came with a bed of potatoes and the balsamic glaze was a nice touch. It's an order at the counter type of establishment and the staff is very helpful and friendly. Nice atmosphere and not so busy as to be disruptive. It was a steady stream of customers, most likely regulars. If you like that sort of thing The Bread Peddler will work for you. Personally, I like being waited on. The space is relatively small and I ended up sharing a table with a person from the street who wanted to engage me in an endless conversation about his EBT card. I paid $2 for my coffee; they brought him his for free. When handed to me by the cashier, my cup of coffee was wet with an unwiped splash of on the outside with no room for cream. I asked a waiter for a napkin and they walked right by as if I was invisible. $13+ for a maybe $8 breakfast, spent in the company of a derelict stranger, no table service, sloppy coffee, and 75 cents for a parking meter to boot. The menu was limited, the service took a very long time (although the waitress was super nice) HOWEVER, as a Jewish person, I do not like to eat ham, so I asked if they could leave the two slices (not diced ham, actual slices, easy to NOT put on) off the Croque Madame. The waitress asked the kitchen manager (telling them I was Jewish) and she came back saying they refused, that the manager was "strict," and did I want to talk to the manager...Of course I do not want to talk to the manager, really, I am trying to have a nice lunch with my sister who I barely get to see!!" Atmos: Moderate size - about 14 tables. lots of natural light. Tea: Harney & Sons! Great quality. Apple Slipper: Great! No too sweet at all. Lovely flakey layers of pastry. Almond crossiont: Ok. It's a bit tough to bite/chew. It's not very light or flakey. Frittata of the Day: Ok. A bit on the watery side. But the flavors are nice. A little on the salty side but mostly just due to the bacon.
