I've been eating at the Broiler since around 1986 but to be honest, hadn't ordered anything from them in probably 5 or 6 years. I always loved their steak subs, pizza, etc. But today, I was VERY disappointed!! I ordered the square pizza & an order of fries. The pizza was BURNT, not cooked well done, but BURNT from top to bottom. The crust edges were black & un-edible. But the fries?? They were UNDER COOKED!! I mean, come on. Somebody's timing was WAY off today. As a line chef, each item of your order should be timed to be ready at the same time. Shame on me for not going to The Broiler sooner! I'm a big cheesesteak fan, and Philly is my home away from home, so that's how I measure quality. The Broiler delivers. The offerings are simple and delicious. I tried a chicken cheesesteak and a regular beef. Both were good, though I preferred the former. Good flavor and meat-to-bread ratio on both sandwiches. The fries were fine but not exceptional--but that's okay, I'm really focused on the cheesesteaks here. Next time I'm planning to try the grilled cheese, too. Ordering and parking were slightly hectic, but I expect that for a hole-in-the-wall place like this. During my recent visit, an older woman was in the restaurant ordering a huge tray of sandwiches. Honestly I don't know why it took me so long to finally try this place. I came from south Jersey so right next to Philly and grew up eating real Philly cheesesteaks for as long as I can remember. After moving to the DMV, I could not find any cheesesteak close to the ones I had growing up. During this pandemic I've discovered the broiler, it doesn't look as great on the outside but the food is delicious. I got a cheesesteak obviously and it was amazing. It is the closest cheesesteak to the ones I had growing up aka real Philly cheesesteaks. I'm really glad to find this place because this is now my go-to Philly cheesesteak place. PIZZA: I'm a fan of cup & char. It's my fave. But even regular pepperoni is great. The toppings at the broiler are on point, as is the cheese. The crust is just off. It's undercooked and too doughy for me. It's hand tossed which should cook to a nice combo of crisp and softness. It's just too doughy got me. STEAK & CHEESE: it's good. I customize to get it more like a Philly (minus the lettuce, tomatoes & Mayo, add banana peppers). It's yummy. Overall, in a pinch it's cool. The steak and cheese subs and steak ham and cheese subs at The Broiler are always, hot greasy and totally satisfying. I always dress my subs with mayo, grilled onions, pickles and hot relish (not the hot relish actually has heat and a kick to hit...props to The Broiler for bringing the heat). I have not tried the pizza or any other subs, just stick with what I know and enjoy.
