Went there for our anniversary. Walking in had high hopes. Which was dashed as soon as we got our drinks . Ordered a Bloody Mary had to have been the worst I have had in years. Had the soup of the day which was fair. As for our meals Disappointing. Cornbread tasted rancid . Waitress was pleasant the only reason giving 3 stars. Unfortunately will not be back. After having conversation with the owner. I will give her the benefit of the doubt. Apparently the kitchen accidentally messed up the cornbread. Which accounted for the taste. And as to the Bloody Mary. She described the ingredients which usually go into there Bloody Mary that weren't in the one I received. At some point will give them another chance.

This was probably more of a 3.5 but I'll edge them up. Ambiance is nice overall mainly because of the fireplace but it's a little dated. Our waitress didn't seem to want to be there but she did check in on us and got what we needed. The food was pretty good. We started with the pretzel board which was really good. Cool concept. I had the coconut shrimp for dinner with green beans and a baked potato. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. Flavor was a little light and the dipping sauce was a bit odd. It also came with cornbread which unfortunately had a weird flavor and none of us liked it. For dessert I had a raspberry chocolate chocolate crust cheesecake. It was really good. Overall there were some hits and some misses but I would return if I go back to the area to ski.

We were truly impressed by our first visit to the Bullhouse that such a high level of quality could be found in this small, out in the wilderness area of Chestertown. Could they do it again? We had been given a handout at the end of our previous visit that encouraged us to return in November to receive some kind of surprise. So, why not take them up on the offer? We arrived about 5:30 on a Saturday evening when there were only two other tables occupied and another couple was being seated in front of us. By the time we left, I think three or four more parties had been seated. I can understand now the reason for the "return in November" promotion. The local Paradox Beaver Bite IPA ($6/pt) was again on draft and both us, without hesitation, decided on it. Our friendly server Joyce informed us of the evening's specials as we reviewed the menu, trying to not order anything that we had tried on our last visit. One of the specials she recited was the Oysters on the Half Shell ($11) that are also on the menu. We had wanted to order them the last time, but they had run out of oysters. So we quickly put our request in for them while we continued studying the menu. I won't say they were a disappointment, but I think it's one of those situations where you build up an anticipation over time of what you are expecting and then it falls just short of what you thought you would be getting. The chorizo flavor was not as full as I had hoped for, and I don't think I noticed any flavor from the crumbled blue cheese. The corn and red pepper cream sauce however, was just right to not overpower the oyster and the broiled breadcrumbs on top made for a very attractive looking serving while also adding another texture and dimension. The Soup of the Day was tomato based with Mexican spices, diced chicken, and queso fresco ($5 cup/$7 bowl). That sounded inviting to me as the weather was finally becoming more Novemberish. My wife was drawn to the Charbroiled Jalapeños ($6). The soup was delicious, not overly spicy, with great flavor, and inner warming. I didn't want to take a chance on spoiling it by adding the provided oyster crackers. The Jalapeños, sliced in half, were a nice combination of flavors with the cheese, bacon, and smoked paprika. Their spice built up over time, but they didn't numb your taste buds for the next course. For her entrée, my wife chose the Quinoa Stuffed Chile Rellenos ($13 entrée/ $9 app.) with the optional Manchego ($1). It was served with a red piquillo pepper sauce, a side of cold slaw, and a mix of green beans and carrots. The quinoa filling was a nice change from the more typically simple cheese approach. A very tasty dish. My choice of entrée was a menu item that was being featured as a special that night, the Prime Top Sirloin ($19; 8 oz./$23; 12 oz.) with a creamy onion sauce. We're talking "all natural baseball filet cut Black Angus, aged 28 days." I like my steak rare to medium-rare, but I wanted to see what the kitchen believed was best for this cut and quality of meat. So I requested it be cooked to the Chef's recommendation. It came out with a nice char on the outside and a beautifuly warm, rare inside. The flavor was exceptional. The sides were the same as those served to my wife, except I was also served cornbread and a choice of starch. I opted for the hand-cut fries. I had two disappointments with my dish. The fries arrived only warm. What a shame, because you could tell that the outside would have been even crispier if hot, and the inside was still soft and full of good potato flavor. The second disappointment was the serrated steak knife. Cutting the filet made me think that the meat was not going to be as tender as I was expecting. However, chewing revealed not only the wonderful flavor of the beef, but also the anticipated tenderness. The knife issue was confirmed when I cut my leftover portion at home with a sharp non-serrated knife. That was the most enjoyable steak I've had in awhile. Our promotion surprise for returning in November was a complimentary dessert. Having sampled on our last visit all but one of the offerings for this evening, my decision by default was a Pumpkin Tart with Cinnamon Ice Cream topped with cinnamon dusted whipped cream. This is one of those times when I'm grateful that my wife tends to be too full for dessert. She takes only a very small taste and leaves the rest for me. The tart was very good, but I could have eaten a quart of that cinnamon ice cream. Service again, was excellent. Our server Joyce was there to check on each course to see that everything was to our liking and she exudes a very warm and welcoming sincereness. I'm sure we'll be visiting again, but maybe not until after the crocuses bloom.

On an extremely frigid Saturday evening we arrived for our 5:30 reservation at 5:28. One person was 10 minutes late and though tables were empty, we could not be seated until our party was complete. We ordered and our drinks arrived quickly. I had ordered peach tea and was surprised mine arrived in a bottle. Soon, our food arrived. I was glad because I was beside the window an it was quite drafty. The dining area isn't particularly large and I assume this is why the service is so highly focused on turning over tables as quickly as possible. It bears mentioning here that due to the weather half the tables were empty this night. My tuna steak was cool, and the sear was a little light for my taste. I ordered the house made blue cheese dressing which was bland. Think sour cream with blue cheese crumbles in it. The salad had plentiful greens and veggies which was lovely. The Chloe fries which I was told was their best dish was home fries with some creamy type of perhaps ricotta or cottage cheese and some bacon crumbles. I would've given the food a 3 star review if not for the service... we were presented with the bill shortly after we finished our entrees and while we all still had other food to finish. Once the bill was paid we were continuing our conversation and sipping our drinks when the hostess came to ask if we needed anything else and also let us know they needed our table for a large party they were expecting. I wished I could've changed the tip I had left and after this experience I absolutely will not be back.

Since we were in Saratoga we decided to check out their new location and bring something home to cook for dinner. There was a lot of fresh fish to choose from and we narrowed it down to either halibut or sea bass. I decided on the sea bass because we've never cooked it at home before. It was about $35/lb., which is a fair price. My wife prepared it with some white wine, butter and shallots and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was so fresh and tasty.

I had every expectation that it would the perfect setting for a quiet dinner with a lovely view, exceptional cuisine and attentive service. Unfortunately, for a restaurant of this caliber, they did not meet the mark. Let's start with the good stuff. They have a parking lot which is really appreciated in Bolton Landing, NY. We were warmly greeted at the door and wished Happy Anniversary. We were seated on the porch (our choice of tables because there was only one set of two diners in the restaurant at 6 p.m. on a Sunday night). Off to a good start. I commented about the pretty dress the hostess (at least we assumed she was) who seated us was wearing. A sweet Jamaican gal who goes by "Skinny Girl" offered water and chatted with us (we recognized her Caribbean accent and asked her which Jamaican parish she was from). She was more attentive to us during the evening than our waiter, Owen (he was clearly overwhelmed handling tables on the porch as well as on the patio outside). To his credit, Owen was honest about the crab legs and we were grateful. Service was slow, from drinks to getting the bill. What really rattled our chains is that the hostess in the pretty dress visited diners at every table on the porch - sometimes more than once - except us. We felt ignored. Our drinks were very good. The specialty of the house (a cucumber concoction) was actually the signature drink at our wedding. My husband enjoyed it. My Blood Orange Martini was delicious, albeit $18 which I thought was more like NYC prices. Appetizers were good. I ordered the Escargot which was served on puff pastry with a light cream sauce. Delicious. My husband's Grilled Clams did not look to be grilled at all, and swimming in what appeared to be the same cream sauce as my Escargot which, because he is lactose intolerant, was a concern. My husband's Chef's Choice steak was strip steak, cooked rare as requested, and served over truffle mashed potatoes with asparagus spears on the side. While pricey st $65, he was pleased. I ordered the venison, rare ($41). What was served to me were 2-1/2 small medallions of which two were rare and one was seriously well done (could not eat it). Spinach was on the side. I would have loved some of the yummy truffle mashed potatoes that accompanied my husband's steak. Again, with no one paying attention to us, by the time our waiter came to check on our food, my husband was already finished with his meal. So Owen's offer to return my overcooked venison to the kitchen was not an option. I packed my dinner to go. We asked for an order of churros to share and two coffees (the espresso machine apparently wasn't working). The coffee was old and barely lukewarm. We asked for replacements. One would think that the kitchen staff would try to make up for their two errors and at least provide us with fresh replacements. Nope. They probably microwaved the first two cups. I did not drink mine. This restaurant claims to be rated among the top 100 in the country. We certainly expected better service and care worthy of their New York City prices. I've worked in the hospitality industry for over 40 years and would never disrespect customers like that, especially when they chose my restaurant for a special occasion. So yes, I was disappointed. Would we give Chateau on the Lake another chance? We have so many wonderful choices in Saratoga and Albany (which would have been the same distance). Maybe.

Surprisingly enough, there was a spot along the Northway just outside of Warrensburg that still managed to show off its rainbow sherbet of colors. Our objective, however, was to meet my sister in Chestertown for dinner at O. P. Fredricks. Arriving at 4 PM when they opened there were already a few people in the bar and in the dining room. They don't take reservations, so it was wise to arrive early. By 4:30 there were people waiting for a table. The atmosphere inside is truly Adirondack with hewn wood beams and paneling. Before I forget, the chairs are really comfortable. The menu was surprisingly, large. In addition to the evening's specials, which included three entrées, there were a dozen shareable appetizers (emphasis on "shareable"), four salads, 19 regular entrées (all accompanied by a fresh salad and bread [we never received any bread, but I didn't see it served to other tables either]), four steaks, at least a dozen different handheld sandwiches, quesadillas, and a kids' menu. There is a full bar including a half dozen drafts. Our beverages to start were a Wolf Hollow draft Camp Out Stout ($8), a Saranac Ginger Beer ($4), and a glass of Mondavi Chardonnay ($7). The portion size of the Baked Brie ($11) was truly shareable. The brie was warmed without being runny, served on top of a tasty garlic bread made from pressed hamburger bun slices, and topped with a melba sauce. It was so delicious! Just like the appetizers, entrée portions are large. We each took half of ours home. My sister was very pleased with her Seafood Stuffed Portobello ($26) - the stuffed portobello was broiled and topped with shrimp scampi and, as all of our entrées, served over the house rice pilaf. My wife's Scallops Rockefeller ($31.95) included sautéed scallops (oddly on one side only), mushrooms, chopped bacon, and baby spinach, finished with an anisette flambé, and served over the previously mentioned rice pilaf. Another tasty dish. My choice was their Jambalaya ($28). It was a delicious combination of sautéed chicken, shrimp, andouille sausage, mixed peppers, onions, and diced tomatoes mixed with the ubiquitous rice pilaf. It had just the right amount of spiciness for my taste to make it a thoroughly enjoyable meal. To wrap things up, we shared the Maple Bread Pudding ($7) with cups of coffee ($3 each). The bread pudding was moist with just enough maple flavor to satisfy a sweet craving. Service throughout was very attentive and friendly. Did I mention how comfortable the chairs are? And yes, their rice pilaf does go very well with everything. We're looking forward to a future visit. UPDATE: The Jambalaya is soooo good the 2nd day, I suggest you order it as takeout to eat the following day. And they are even nice enough to have removed the tails from the shrimp before the dish is served.
