To my taste, Bandidas serves up one of the more solid burritos in town. The "Leona Gayle," packed with chipotle smoked tofu, beans, cheese, and rice, was flavorful, had a nice kick, and filled me up for the entire rest of the day. I'm not sure whether the chef was more heavy-handed with the spices during my visit, but I didn't experience the blandness that other Yelpers have mentioned. I would definitely advise getting your burrito "baked." It's a $3 upcharge, but they drench it in ranchero sauce and cheese and bake it, turning it into a lovely casserole-style meal. Burrito purists may scoff, but one of my friends had the foresight to go with this option, and I was envious. Wait staff seem to be pleasantly chatty and quick. On a hotter day, the hibiscus iced tea makes a refreshing pairing with the spicy/salty flavors of the mains. read more

The vivid logo of this restaurant would often catch my eyes as the expo line speeds past it on Commercial. So when I tried to search for "Banderas" on Google, I was embarrassed to find out it's actually named Bandidas. Thanks for leaving such a lasting impression, Antonio Banderas, Desparado was a great movie by the way. As beginner eaters of Mexican cuisine, my family and I came here to have tacos and after reading the menu, we knew we wanted at least one of each of their 7 variety of tacos. As we took our first bites, something wasn't right. Where was the meat!? We had assume that there would be meat by default and soon after learned that Bandidas is a vegetarian restaurant! Feeling defeated, I still had to eat the food placed before me. With each subsequent bite, I gradually realized how delicious vegetarian tacos could actually be. Without the overpowering presence of meat, the flavors of omnivorous ingredients (pineapples, beans, picked radishes, etc.) were able to flourish and work in synchrony. Brunch: One of my new favourite places for brunch. Be ready for a line though. Also staff isn't very attentive so make sure you tell them everything you need in the beginning. I asked for a bit more maple syrup (to be exact I said half the small glass they gave me) and she came back with a whole bowl which they charged me for. Dinner: Always get the nachos as their tacos really don't do it for me. I find them to be sloppy. Usually get the pineapple nachos which I'm happy with but also find they don't layer the cheese, the ingredients just sit on top. So once you've finished your top layer you are left with just plain nacho chips. Evening staff are also not very attentive. Asked for more sauce and never came. Have to say, I love this place. I have eaten here around four times now and they have plenty of vegan options that are appetizing! This time I got a baked with vegan cheese Estelle burrito, and it was quite good though I will probably choose a different flavour next time. I also had their vegan cake for desert and it was divine... I did not want to share with my bestie. Speaking of my bestie, she got a vegetarian dish that she was quite happy with so we were both happy campers. Came here to celebrate a friend's birthday, and we came in as a large group so my experience is based off that. It was pretty busy, even on a Monday evening. Service was slower, but not enough for us to really notice. I really like how this restaurant is vegetarian! They do a really good job with making their food interesting. I had their moscow mule and their estelle burrito bowl. The moscow mule was alright, the issue I had with it was they didn't really put enough ginger beer into it so it tasted more like the other things they put into it. I really liked the Estelle burrito bowl, everything was fresh and tasty. The only thing I wish they had added was more sauce (salsa, sour cream...) into it so I had more stuff to mix into the rice. My friends ordered the baked burritos, and they thoroughly enjoyed those. If I come back, I will totally give one of those a try! read more

I had the tacos from the taco truck. They were delicious. All vegetarian with vegan options. You can tell that the tortillas were homemade. The tacos were fresh. They had tofu as an option but if you don't like tofu then you still have plenty to choose from. I had the Ronny Russell and the Horace Lefty. They were filled with beans and jalapeños. Definitely an experience! For starters, I had no idea butternut squash could taste so good in a burrito. The fact that you can veganize all options as well gets extra points for me. All the food that was being carried out the kitchen looked delicious, and I already struggled to decide what to get from their vast menu. Choices, choices. While I enjoyed my baked burrito, I wasn't too big of a fan of my friend's quesadillas. It's a matter of personal taste but I didn't enjoy the texture of the corn tortilla. Honestly, I'm not too big of a fan of Mexican food (beans aren't really my thing, sorry) but Bandidas changed my mind with their interpretations of the food. My friends and I decided to come here for lunch as two of us haven't been there before. Boy was I in for a treat that day. I was recommended to get a burrito as one said that it was filling. From this, I got the Stella as I've never ever had butternut squash in a burrito before. This is the most scrumptious burrito I've ever had! Packed full of flavour, this gem of a dish screams out yummy. Never a dull bite. This lovely butternut squash combined with the nice crunch of purple will be my new comfort food when I'm in the area. Had brunch here with my Dad a few weeks ago. Was super disappointed. The food was ok. Not great but not terrible. I ordered the baked burrito with guacamole and a coffee (no espresso machine). The whole thing was super soggy despite the waitress promising otherwise. Our coffee was cold when it arrived. This is the saddest part :( and it was next to impossible to flag down our waitress for refills or orders. Now I'm not crazy, I'm not expecting 5 star service in this place, that's not what I'm here for. But if you never come by, that's upsetting. Our finished dishes shouldn't have sat in front of us for 20 minutes. That's just too long. My husband surprised me with birthday breakfast at this AWESOME all veggie restaurant! It's a little kitsch and really cute on the inside. They were playing some doo-wop which sets a fabulous vibe! There were so many items to choose from! There were burritos, scramble hash, omelettes, breakfast tacos and more! Many of the items can be made vegan too! I had the burrito bowl which had rice, beans, guacamole, cabbage, tomato salsa and sour cream. It was soooo good! Very fresh and filling without feeling gross after. My brunch date had the breakfast burrito which came with baked eggs he still cant stop talking about. They give you homemade habanero hot sauce and it was AMAZING! It seems like previous yelp reviews have some concerns on the service. Upon visiting for the first time today, we had a different, more positive experience. It was fairly busy, in fact, I believe we got the last available table as we walked in, but our server was very attentive, coming back to the corner we were at a number of times to make sure everything was ok. The food was prompt as well as bringing the check and payment. So no complaints there. I don't often frequent vegetarian restaurants, so I'm always a bit wary when there are no meat options. However, I ordered the rocky enchilada with ranchero sauce and it was right up my alley. I'm not a big fan of spicy food, so I was happy to find this dish was perfectly fine for me and I found it fairly delicious. I can understand how some people might walk in here and be disappointed especially if they failed to understand it's a vegetarian restaurant and were looking for spicy, meaty dishes, but I think it's nice and refreshing to have Bandidas as an option. This is a reasonably priced Mexican vegetarian restaurant. We came here for brunch and they had a pretty wide menu with a lot of options including salads, eggs benedicts on cornbread, breakfast tacos, and a lot of bean, tortilla and/or egg dishes. I normally don't eat vegetarian food but we wanted something relatively healthy, and this was a great place with a lot of variety to choose from. Cecil's Salad ($12) - Romaine lettuce, black beans, fresh-cut tomato salsa, spicy Mexican corn, cilantro, cheese, crushed tortilla chips, and creamy lime avocado dressing. My fiance and I both liked this salad better than the breakfast salad - it had more flavor and I liked the creamy avocado / lime dressing. The different ingredients and the textures all came together nicely here, and I liked that the beans were warm and made the cheese melty. Breakfast Salad ($12) - Romaine, purple cabbage, cilantro, cheese, pinto beans, guacamole, fresh-cut tomato salsa, and balsamic vinaigrette, topped with two fried free-range eggs, and served with two handmade corn tortillas. I didn't really like this salad and thought it was a little bit bland in taste. It needed some of the habanero salsa to give it a little bit of kick, but in general, I thought the pinto beans were lacking in taste and the whole salad was just okay. It wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't recommend it. I did like the runny egg yolk in the fried eggs, and the corn tortillas. Cornbread Muffin Tops with Honey Butter ($2.50) - I loved the cornbread - it wasn't too dry and it was served warm with the honey butter. I'd recommend this. Overall, I'd give this place 3.5-4 stars for a good brunch and relatively healthy menu / lighter menu than most other brunch places. The Cecil salad and the cornbread are the winners here. Also, we came around 1 pm on a Sunday and didn't have to wait in line, which was a plus. read more

Bandidas is a solid option when I've got a craving for Mexican but don't want anything too heavy. One time I was there and a couple who was seated next to me left after looking at the menu and realized there was no meat. Their loss! I'm not a vegetarian but you're not missing out if you don't have meat here. My go-to dish is the Ronny Russell burrito, baked with cheese. It's filled with yams, guacamole, black beans, rice, and is really flavourful and satisfying. Getting it baked with cheese is an additional price but definitely worth it. Other notables: Chips & guacamole - can't go wrong with gauc Horchata- not too sweet, very refreshing and you can choose if you want it with regular milk, soy or almond milk Brunch - love their brunch items. Meh. I've experienced better. Food was meh, Service was meh. Decor was nice. Ambiance was... weird? 90's-00's R&B in a Taqueria? Okay... I can hang (and sing along... much to DH's chagrin!) We were heading into town for a bite and date night. DH said something to the effect of "There's a highly reviewed Mexican spot on Commercial" and we were off to the races. We sat down, and our carnivorous eyes darted across the menu... butternut squash tacos? tempeh? The sudden realization that we were in a vegetarian Mexican spot was observable on both of our faces. Always willing to try new things and at least attempt to eat vegetarian a few times a week, we both went into it with a super positive attitude and decided to share a little of everything taco. We ordered one of each taco, an extra one of each of the three of the top sellers as selected by our server, two margaritas (one lime, one hibiscus), and some chips / guacamole / salsa. I was excited. I really wanted to like it! It was busy and popular and who knows, maybe I'll be recreating the delicacies on Mexican night next week! Sadly, this was not the case... Well, I'll maybe I'll try to recreate it, but here's where Bandida's failed for me: 1. There was not a pepper in sight, hot or otherwise. We asked for everything hot and nothing came that way, at least not for our thai-pepper-loving palates. There wasn't even onion on the tacos we received. Just a bunch of flavourless cabbage. 2. Everything needed seasoning. Everything. Even the guacamole. There was no cilantro on our tacos, but tons of spinach. And maybe it's just our carnivorous palate, but for us, we needed to add considerable salt, and even that did nothing for.... 3. The entirely mushy texture of everything. Wet, mushy tacos with far too many beans to make sense. Everything just tasted like unseasoned pinto bean. I should mention that at most taquerias, our favourite tacos tend to be the vegetarian ones - beans, onions, peppers, fresh cilantro... so it's not like we are are rabid carnivores complaining simply because we're lacking meat. A friend tipped me off to this newly opened taqueria on The Drive. We're not local to Vancouver, so I was at the mercy of yelp and pals to guide me to the most delicious vegetarian and vegan plates in the city. And DANG! I struck gold when my sweet wife and I visited Bandidas for lunch on Valentine's day. An all-vegetarian taqueria with vegan options (including homemade vegan sour cream, and gourmet vegan cheese!!!!! !) I have heard the place is owned by cyclists/cyclist-friendly folk, and that was in clear evidence the day we had our VD lunch. There seemed to be an alleycat ending at Bandidas, and the stacks of brightly colored bikes locked up outside told us we were in the right place. The space is cozy, but not crowded. Half the room was taken up by cyclists drinking pitchers of the beers on tap. All the tables were full, and we resigned ourselves to wait. Magically, a couple with a table noticed we were waiting, and scurried out to leave the table for us. I want to point out that this is the type of place where you could sit all day, but strangers still gave up their table for us. The service was prompt, and so so friendly. All the ladies who helped us were sweeter than pie. Our server fielded our questions with honesty and grace. One lady from the kitchen came out with the Los GLD nachos she made us, to apologize for their ridiculous size. They just got out of control and kept growing, she told us. The plate was a little intimidating, but the black beans, pineapple, sweet onions, red peppers and corn made for a delicious nacho experience. The ratio of topping-to-chip was perfect!! Their salsa was my favorite style, and it added tremendously to the nacho experience. The chipotle tofu tacos (Leona Gail!) were delectable. The sour cream was a perfect balance with the smoky chipotle. I have eaten many, many tons of tofu in my lifetime, and the tofu on these tacos was among the best I have ever tasted. I was nervous about it, but those tacos did not taste like tofu at all. Additionally, the homemade tortillas were perfect: thick, fragrant, delicious, but sturdy enough to shovel in the taco fillings. I greatly enjoyed the tacos and nachos, but it hurt my heart a little to miss their brunch. The brunch menu looks amazing (it's on their website) and brunch is my favorite meal... The bathroom was clean, which is remarkable when you have that many cyclists around. The walls were decorated with maps of the world and Mexico, and there were shelves and shelves of bicycle touring books and old National Geographic magazines. The prices were fair, especially considering the quality of ingredients dished up. I am sublimely, hysterically jealous of the Vancouver-ites who get to eat at Bandidas whenever they please. I would happily face the icy glares of the border cops 1,000 times for just one more bite of the chipotle tofu tacos. Next time, I hope I can order a beer. This is everything great vegetarian food should be: hearty, delicious, healthy. I was (mostly) vegetarian for the first 18 years of my life and the food at Bandidas is so good I (almost) want to go back to my meatless life! I've never been a fan of tofu and I love that there are so many protein rich options that don't have tofu. I keep trying to eat other things here, but their baked burritos are just too darn good! I've tried almost all of them but the Bobcat has to be my favourite - there's nothing like carbs on carbs slathered in cheese! Potatoes, caramelized onions, pinto beans, cheese, sour cream, & roasted salsa all bundled into a cozy wrap and slathered in more cheese that gets baked until bubbly and melty. Serve that with a killer little salad, coat the thing with hot sauce and dig in! Their hibiscus lemonade is also unreal, especially when tequila gets added! The cornbread with brunch is stupid good, although I find it gets a little soggy with the bennys - all the better to smush everything together and inhale it! The decor is pretty hipster, but crossed with your kooky Aunt's kitchen - think lots of plants, linoleum tablecloths, and tiled floors. Everything is a little older, but very comfortable. A friend and I came by at around 12:30 for brunch on a Thursday afternoon and although it wasn't packed, we had to wait a little bit for a table because they are a little bit short staffed. We were really excited when the food landed on the table since we ordered a hicks benny and three tacos to share. The eggs benedict is loaded with guacamole and tomatillo or warm tomato sauce on delicious CORN BREAD. The corn bread is definitely the highlight being soft, sweet and delicious. It does get soggy after awhile so best to eat it when it comes! Also, the dish came with beans, potatoes and some red cabbage making it a well balanced plate. The tacos we got were mix and match so we tried the leona gale, ronny russell and stella. Of these three, my favourite was definitely leona gale because of the wonderful chipotle tofu on top! All three were great because they were flavourful, complex and filling but did not feel greasy making it a generally healthy meal. I loved pretty much everything about Bandidas. It was deserted which meant quiet (or awful perhaps, but I'd already read the reviews and know that isn't the case!), the table tops were covered in a delightful purple and black design that I wanted to rip off and wear as a dress, and it is all vegetarian! I decided to start with a Bourbon Berry Fizz (or was it Fuzz?) which was AMAZING! The bourbon was not overpowering in the slightest. I totally recommend this! And now for the food... I went with a baked burrito. The Leona Gayle, specifically. The only part of this burrito I didn't like was the way the tofu was done. I guess I'm not really a chipotle kinda girl. It was also quite sweet, and I prefer my salts and my sweets to be kept separate. This wasn't really a problem though as the flavour of the tofu didn't seem to affect the rest of the burrito fillings.. which were awesome by the way. Lots of cheese! Aw yeah! We decided to splurge and be naughty with some of the brownies that are made from scratch! This was a good idea, just so you all know. GET THIS GODDAMN BROWNIE. Get it baked with cheese. It changes everything. And so, from this particular Sunday brunch at Bandidas and on, I want all my brunch dishes baked with cheese. There was a short wait when we arrived, and I would tell anyone with no patience to just be patient and wait. We're really lacking some good Mexican in Vancouver, so I just had to try out the brunch here. A casual space, the walls are adorned with local art, and Mexican motifs all around. A great setting for a lazy Sunday afternoon. We ordered the Mrs.Cohen- a spicy tortilla soup, finished with avocado, toasted tortillas chips, feta cheese, cilantro & two poached eggs. So much goodness in one bowl. Crispy, hot, and filling. Finished it off with poached eggs? Now this is the perfect dish. And then, for the star: The Morgan Taylor- a breakfast burrito with roasted potatoes, scrambled free-range eggs, roasted salsa, cheese & sour cream. Of course, baked in enchilada sauce and cheese. Added guacamole. I was in breakfast heaven when I devoured this. The dish tends to be on the richer side, but it's so good! The enchilada sauce soaks into the tortilla, and makes everything taste even better. Oh, order their hibiscus tea too. My cousin brought me here the next day I landed in Vancouver because he knows I absolutely love brunch! And what a great way to kick off the holiday! It was a Thursday but these guys serve 'til 2 on weekdays (I think). And wow for a Thursday it was crowded. The thing I hate most about brunch is the slow service. They seriously take their time cleaning tables and this place was no exception. However, after long awaiting for our table and anticipating for our food, it finally arrived. It was definately different from any brunch I've usually eaten. It definately had a mexican touch to it. (Definately 'cause of the beans) But I had eggs benedict. I forgot the name but it had pineapple in it, which was different in a good way. The pineapple wasn't sour and the sweet yams were seasoned and cooked PERFECTLY. The dish was HUGE and I could not finish everything. Suprisingly the cornbread that everyone was raving about wasn't that good. I guess the texture wasn't cutting it for me. I love my protein, especially in the form of meat but I ventured into this vegetarian restaurant with my girlfriends for a date night. We arrive on a Friday night at 7:30pm and it was packed with a line-up. We waited for about 30 minutes before being seated, luckily us girls had lots to chat about to pass the time and to distract our rising hangry level. I started with their vegan horchata. I tried the almond milk choice as the waitress suggested, out of the possible choices of milk, soy or almond. It was light in cinnamon flavour and I could really taste the almond milk, which was pleasant but I might opt for the milk instead next time to let the other flavour shine and not be dominated by almond. It wasn't as sweet and cinnamony as other horchata drinks I had (like at Sal y Limon.. my fave!) but it was still nice. We decided to share the Hamptons Nachos. Almost on the brink of false advertisement because the small was HUGE! Even for the 3 of us, we barely managed to finish it... well worth the $14. Lots of smokey sweet chipotle organic tofu (the waitress said it wasn't spicy but there was a definite kick to it for me), cheese, pinto beans, onions, sweet peppers, corn (I wish they sprinkled more), and jalapeños all thrown on top of crispy yellow corn tortilla chips. The sides of salsa, sour cream and homemade guacamole made these nachos a teetering chip of goodness with each bite. We each had two tacos (2 for $6). I started with the Wolf & Goat which was loaded with fresh gauc, pinto beans, roasted tomato salsa, cheese, sour cream and the best ingredient was the purple cabbage that added a crisp crunch and the flavour was a subtle sweet and pickled taste that added such freshness and nice balance to the savoury beans. The second taco I had was the Ronny Russel, which was piled high with roasted yams and onions, black beans, gauc, salsa, purple cabbage and pumpkin seeds. The roasted yams were a highlight with its sweetness and huge chunks that definitely filled you up. I was worried coming into a vegetarian restaurant and leaving hungry or not protein-satisfied. But boy was I wrong, I was super full and felt like all the beans and tofu I consumed was enough to fulfill my protein needs. Overall, nice service, dimly lit rustic interior with packed tables and good vegetarian food. I'd visit again but maybe on off hours to avoid the line ups. I also heard they'll be taking over the restaurant next door to expand and also changing their hours to 24 hours so you can get your vegetarian Mexican food fix at all hours of the day! I love their brunch! I can't say the same about the dinners I've had here, but overall Banditas is a great Vegetarian diner. I love the atmosphere. Good service and objectively terrible food. I was looking forward to the juevos rancheros, and was so, so disappointed. The dish was cold and tasteless, the tortillas were raw, the beans were under cooked, and the sauce was so watery that my plate looked like soup. I asked the wait staff about this and the answer was "ya, the sauce is really liquidy on that." So they're aware there's a problem but haven't made the effort to source a different sauce? Very underwhelming. Again, great staff, it's just a shame they have to serve bad food. 2 stars for the service alone. read more

You know that show on the Food Network called "The Best Thing I Ever Ate"? If I were famous and anyone cared enough to let me ramble on about Eggs Benedict I would go on TV and sing Bandidas praises. I came here alone for lunch today because I'm cool like that. I work on Renfrew and Broadway and decided to take the train to Commercial to explore my food options. I started walking toward 12th and noticed a Banner's Family Restaurant. "Mmmm eggs Benedict" I said to myself, even though Banner's is not exactly a culinary adventure and thought I had made up my mind. I walked past Bandidas and took a look at the menu. Brunch until 3?! Hmmm... What sealed the deal was a cute boy coming back inside from his smoke. "It's awesome! Don't be afraid, come in and try it". Um...OK!! I got a table for 1 really quickly and looked over the drinks. I decided on coffee because I already knew I wanted brunchy food. My waitress was a little slow and could have been more polite. Actually, had she been more friendly I would have rated this 5 stars. Anyway, I ordered the Hick's Benny. I noticed it came on a corn muffin rather than an English muffin. I was a little turned off of the idea because my brain was temporarily not functioning. My food came and the corn muffin was of course corn bread. DUH! I FREAKING LOVE CORN BREAD. Yeah, my reservations flew away after one bite. I was amazed at how good my meal was. The Benny consisted of perfectly poached eggs on the corn muffin topped with avocado slices and salsa served with yam/potato "hash browns" and beans. Best $14 I have ever spent. As my rating would suggest "Yay, I'm a big fan". I don't think of this place should be compared to other Mexican or taco places,.. it is something completely different. Basically it is a very creative vegetarian place that will satisfy even the most devout carnivore without them even noticing. In the taco department, they have 6. All are unique and far tastier than they sound, one including crushed walnuts as the mean "meat". The salad that comes with it it is also awesome. Everything is ethical and fresh, and I think organic and local (all that good stuff y'know) We sat at the bar and everything that came out of that kitchen was huge and tasty looking. I'm particularly was keen to try to the "bennys" made on corn muffin tops instead of an English muffin. I've really enjoyed both visits here, and will be back. On a taco pursuit this summer. Baseline would be places I went to in NY. Not realizing this place was a vegetarian joint I just blindly ordered 4 different tacos to go. I guess I'm not familiar with the idea of a vegetarian Mexican venue, but hey If the reviews say it's good food that's cue to try. Sadly I was very disappointed. The taco shells had edges that were dried out. Two of them had pinto beans and salsa, 3 out of 4 of the tacos had purple cabbage. I guess this is their trademark? Anyway the cabbage was runny, had a puddle of juice in my take out tray- not very professionally prepared I'd have to say. Every ingredient was either room temp or cold- whether this was intentional I'm not too sure but it did not complement. Worst of all the tacos all tasted about the same, with only really a little bit of yam and salsa being distinctive. If I can't recommend this to my bro who's lived in NY I can't recommend it to anyone. ps. service was decent and decors are more on the alternative style than Mexican. I love bacon. I love meat. I am anything but a vegetarian. I'm also from California, so I have a special place in my heart for Mexican food. Needless to say, I was extremely surprised with how tasty my breakfast at Bandidas was. Came in around 9 on a Saturday morning and sat at the bar by myself. Ordered a coffee, the egg muffins -- two corn muffin tops with guacamole, cheese, egg and smothered with salsa of your choice. I loved everything about this dish. Not only was it different (corn muffin tops only? Hell yeah), but everything was full of flavor and I loved how the egg yolk was nice and runny still. The one thing I would have liked about it would be for them to use more room temp guac and salsa, as pouring it on there made everything else pretty cold. If you like spicy stuff, they offer a habanero salsa on the side. Def. load that up on your plate. Would love to come back with a friend or two and try more of the menu! read more

Ordered the baked breakfast burrito this last weekend and it did not disappoint. I've been to The Burrow in the past and I think they serve a solid brunch. If you go, make sure to order a side of the corn muffins with honey butter, they are delicious. Anyways. The baked burrito was perfect, they do not skimp on the cheese and sauce, either. I ordered a side of potatoes and yams and tbh it was not needed. The burrito is totally big enough as a meal on its own. Love the vibe of this east van restaurant. Cornbread is still the GOAT, frozen take and bake vegan items are also pretty tasty. Enchiladas were okay, probably wouldn't get again. Vegan coconut cake had a pretty good flavour, I am grateful that I couldn't taste any coconut. Good amount of chocolate chips and it would have been prefect if not for the texture which was kind of dry/crumbly/grainy/chewy. I still ate it all but for the price I don't really think it's worth it unless they fix the texture. However, I do love how basically everything can be made vegan here. read more
