I rarely drop in for dim sum at SBK and I got my grandmas bestie to join me that day. Service was great, tea service, seating etc... For some reason the food is just ok compared to regular times I've dropped in for dinner/take-away. The pea shoots were very chewy and old, pea shoots are suppose to be delicate and tender or if it's old then certain stems should be peeled off, the monkey head mushrooms was limited in quantity and was mixed in with oyster mushrooms. The sauce was too thin and flavourless. The Deep Fried taro puffs was missing some flavours and the exterior of the fry was lacking- more on the mushy end. Finally made it here for dim sum! Kept missing the hours for dim sum (11am-3pm). We intentionally made sure we would be in town for opening. Price point: $85 total for 2 people with 1/2 a meal left over. Yes, tea is charged, but it's cheap. Really really friendly service, they are constantly coming around to refill tea and water, and are always scanning to see if anyone needs anything. One person was offering around dishes on a tray at the start of service. Ambiance: Classic dim sum type spot, bathroom wasn't the cleanest. I've always loved the dim sum at this place, because they are creative with the veggies in addition to using alternative soy-based meats. Their service has always been polite and attentive no matter how busy they are. The only concern from having dimsum there today, was that the translucent white wrappers/skins e.g. the hargow were very grainy and mushy. Also the mushroom siu mai was mushy with no texture at all. I recall that the dishes in the past had more texture, chew and crisp to it. We will give it another try next time. read more

There are two popular Vegetarian restaurants in Vancouver. They are located across from each other but they are not related. Sun Bo Kong and Bo Kong Vegetarian Restaurant. I prefer Bo Kong over Sun Bo Kong. I ordered through UberEats the Jai Gluten Combination, Taro and Gluten with Coconut Sauce Hotpot and Deep-fried Seaweed Enoki Mushroom. The Jai Gluten Combination was pretty tasty. I feel like they are missing the imitation roast pork. But overall that it was not bad. The deep-fried Seaweed Enoki Mushroom is my go to dish that I always order when I have vegetarian food. The Gluten with Coconut Sauce Hotpot was very mediocre and I would probably not order it again. Also the portion size was very small to my surprise on how much they charge. I think next time I will just order from their competitor Bo Kong which is located across the street. read more

Vegetarian Dim Sum doesn't sound possible to me. That's until I tried this restaurant and was pleasantly surprised by a few dishes. The highlights included the puffy vegetarian pork buns with sweet and sour bbq flavors. I stuck one in my mouth, and literally ate two more just as if they were marshmallows. The seaweed rice was also an aromatic surprise. It had a lot of delicious vegetables, and a wonderful umami flavor. The rice noodle tofu dish was a great take on a shrimp noodle. Though I did miss the seafood flavor. To help develop the savory delicious flavor of the tofu, they created a soy-based vinegar sauce. I was a fan. Some dishes lacked flavor like the won ton soup, and the broth just tasted like hot water. I would come here again, and next time just pick the items I've highlighted above. read more

---Dec 2022 edit--- Things have completely changed here. There were only 3 tables during the time we went (3pm) and they couldnt even handle it and they were focusing on the online orders. Even that they couldn't even get any orders correct. We ordered and sat for 30 min watching everyone else get their food except us. Then I overheard the servers asking why we don't have food yet and it turns out they forgot to send the orders to the kitchen. We asked about it and they did not apologize and just said "it's coming soon" They wrote down the wrong order and gave us something completely different. We asked for the original order and they tried to push the already-made wrong dish to us. They asked us to try it (so they dont have to make a new one) Appetizer roasted 'pork' slices - super jello-y. They did not use the veggie meat for this and it doesn't taste like what it's supposed to imitate. Hot and sour soup - was ok. Very surfacy flavor. They need to make a vegetable or mushroom stock or something for flavor. Mapo tofu - no spicy component at all. Not much peppercorn or doubanjiang taste. It was tasty but not made correctly. The 扣肉 (taro with veggie meat pot) was a disaster. The chef did not know how to make it. The sauce was not supposed to be 南乳 (red fermented beancurd). It is supposed to be dark soy sauce. The taro should be fried but they didn't which resulted in most of the taro disintegrating into the dish. There was not enough sauce to soak the taro leaving the taro dry and sandy. We ordered the deep fried oyster mushrooms and for the whole 1.5 hour we were there, it never came. The table who came an hour after us received that dish. We asked about it and they said "it's coming soon" so we ended up just canceling the dish. The whole time we were eating, we can hear the servers yell at each other and to the chef for making wrong orders, or not enough orders, and not even knowing whether a customer had paid or not. None of them were coordinated with each other and there was a lot of confusion everywhere. When paying, the server even suggested she can take my card to pay for me (aka she chooses the tips). It's been a few years since our last visit to Sun Bo Kong. Not much has changed since. Still the only place in town that we know about for 100% vegetarian dim sum. We dropped in on a Friday (around noon) and it wasn't busy. Tea is $1.25/person. Dim sum prices are in the $4.95 to $7.95 range. - Steamed bean curd wrap ($5.75) - still as good as last time. Get it. - Five grain rice in lotus leaf ($7.50) - another solid staple that we always get. - Stir fried turnip cake with XO sauce ($10.75) - no "kick" but the turnip cakes were excellently cooked. Light and satisfying. - Deep-fried beancurd skin stuffed with burdock ($6.25) - not what I was expecting from the description but decent. - Steamed BBQ bun ($5.50 for 3) - Panfried stuffed eggplant ($6.95) - best dish of the afternoon. Great portion and the "meat" was delicious. Nice crunchy texture on the outside. - Truffle & mushroom siu mei ($6.25) - they re-vamped the siu mei. Still didn't love the mushy texture. - Pan-fried lily bulb and mushroom dumpling ($6.25 for 3) - best of the dumplings we ordered. Good texture and filling. - Xiao long bao ($6.50) - always skeptical to get XLB at a non-Shanghainese spot. Mushy texture again and no soup inside. Not good. - Truffle, mushroom & pea tips rice flour roll ($7.95) - plain jane. Didn't taste much, if any, truffle. - Panfried turnip cake ($5.25) - not greasy and tasty. This is my absolutely favourite vegetarian restaurant. It has such a great variety of vegetarian food, and the quality and portion of the food is just amazing and so worth it. The service is really friendly. Takeout is 10% off and they also accommodate takeout in reusable containers (bonus for my wallet and the earth!) Even when I order take-out in person, they prepare the take-out so quickly. Mine and my family's favourite dish is the Monkey Head Mushroom and Oyster Mushroom on Pea Tips. So. Good. My brother says it reminds him of abalone and always asks for this dish whenever we order takeout from Sun Bo Kong. Other dishes we have tried are Beancurd Skin Roll with Black Bean Sauce, Sweet and Sour Pineapple Delight, and Deep-Fried Emoji Mushroom on Soft Tofu with Broccoli. All of which were really good! It pains me to write this review. Seriously. We frequented this restaurant often when they were in Richmond and had been so looking forward to a trip to Vancouver to visit again. What a huge let down. The owner is still as friendly as always, but the food was mediocre at best. Our favorite cold appetizer platter was overly sweet and one item indistinguishable from the next. The other dishes we ordered (tofu skin in black bean sauce, wonton soup, crispy noodles) were all bland and various stages of mush. The only redeeming dish was the combo fried taro and milk. Perhaps we caught them on an off night, but I can't envision sitting in a three hour border crossing for this meal again. read more

One of my favourite vegetarian restaurant! Friendly staff and some are a bit pushy but most are fine. Speak Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. Usually not pack so walk in are fine but you are always welcomed to make reservations. There's another restaurant called Po Kong across the street and from what I heard a friend (who frequent both and whole family and most family friends are from the same beliefs) said was that Po Kong started first but when the owner and chef had a falling out, the chef opened up Sun Bo Kong. So in terms of menu and tastes they are pretty similar and both are delicious and good service but just up to you really. I like to support both here and there. Their food are delicious but a bit on the pricier side. Not much parking so bus is best in my option (although Burnaby bus aren't very reliable and usually behind schedule) or skytrain to VCC then switch bus 22. I don't frequent this place but definitely a place I do go back from time to time. Would recommend this and Po Kong both! read more

If you are on Kingsway and you pass Sun Bo Kong, and you can not go in to eat (say you are busy or you have an appointment), You should at least stop in front of Sun Bo Kong, put your palms together in praise, and bow at least once before continuing on your way. This restaurant is that good. * * * Note that this is NOT, repeat NOT a Chinese fake meat restaurant. Unlike the many many Chinese vegetarian restaurants run by the Supremely Well-Dressed and Legitimately Wise Master Ching Hai, there is no chicken made of gluten, fish made of gluten, beef made of gluten, pork made of gluten or hot dogs made of gluten, The Ching Hai restaurants are fine places to eat - but they are generally celebrations of the miracle of gluten. Sun Bo Kong is about vegetables as vegetables. Vegetables as vegetables in 532,838 different magnificent manifestations. The menu is huger than huge. My vegetarian wife who normally gets to order from one section of the menu called "vegetarian" and has only one to eight choices at any restaurant, literally found herself overwhelmed with pages and pages and pages of choices - all of which she could have. Her happiness knew no bounds. About one fifth of the menu is vegetarian dim sum. Those items were particularly stellar. I never got to try my wife's steamed vegetable dumplings because the love of my life inhaled them in six and a half nanoseconds. The Barbecue Buns (Note - NOT Gluten Barbecue Pork buns. Barbecue Vegetable buns) were long, narrow and cylindrical, unlike the BBQ pork buns you know from Cantonese Dim Sum. The pastry was buttery and flaky not unlike a phyllo dough. The pastry in regular pork buns is gummy. The dominant taste was in the pastry, not in the filling as is the case the pork buns you are used to. It was vegan. Nevertheless, it was pure buttery golden goodness. The filling - Barbecued Something (possibly palm root or taro) - played a savory supporting role. We were in absolute heaven. My main dish was what they called a traditional vegetarian hotpot. Hotpot lovers take note. They had a whole two thirds of a page of vegan hotpot dishes. The hotpots come in a rainbow array of flavors. Traditional hotpot was: Never mind the sauce. Enjoy the vegetables for what they are. The vegetables as they were were magnificent. I could identify most of them - but they were pretty exotic. Most were obscure items from a Chinese grocery's produce section or dried goods sections. You know the ones I mean. The ones that you don't buy even though you really want to because you don't know how to prepare the ingredients. These people know how to prepare the ingredients. Prepare to be both happy and endlessly entertained. My wife got a three mushroom soup that was nice but not as fun as the other items. The flavoring for the three mushrooms was seaweed in industrial quantities. I can see how mushrooms and seaweed could theoretically get along. However, we both like our mushroom soups to be a little less astringent and a little more on the savory side. That said, with the vegetarian dim sum and hot pots, we were in a generalized state of ecstasy. So the mushroom soup could be whatever it wanted to be. Oh - and for the record - Servings of anything that is not dim sum are HUGE. Don't go overboard when you order. * * * Overall this is an establishment of limitless inventiveness And endless vegetable treats. In a city crammed with destination Chinese restaurants, It is hard to say, "Don't Leave Vancouver without going to Establishment X". But Sun Bo Kong really is an establishment you don't want to miss. I wish there was more descriptions in the menu but it's just my preference. I ordered Assorted Vegetables, Chili & Pepper Deep Fried Tofu, and Pan-Fried Oyster Mushroom on Broccoli. The Assorted Vegetables came on a bed of noodles and the noods to veg ratio was perfect! The tofu was excellent. Not greasy and mild spice (I prefer heat - but this is perfect for most spice levels). The skin was way too thick. Plain rice rolls (3/5) Also average. Tapioca pudding (4.5/5) The crust at the top was so good. It was served piping hot, and the dish was super flavourful. It even had some red bean paste at the bottom. Overall, there were some hits and some misses. We normally come for dinner but I just found out they do dim sum too, not sure if it's just for weekend though. Food here has great taste and quality. Some of them are really outstanding, like gluten combinations (my favorite). The service is generally good though I was a bit annoyed during my last trip. Never had vegetarian dim sum before but I really enjoyed my experience and would come back again with my parents whom are both vegetarian. The deep fried taro rolls were excellent (ask for their hot sauce) and so was their soup dumplings. I also really enjoyed their pan fried turnip cakes and steamed dumplings. If you're vegetarian this is a must try - if you're not a vegetarian I would still recommend Sun Bo Kong. read more
