Knowing I don't care for Mexican food, my boyfriend suggested we go here because he said it may change my opinion of burritos. So tonight we had a fun little dinner date! I quite enjoyed my meal, oh yes I did! They have a really nice, modern, vegetarian take on classic Mexican foods. I ordered the Dave's Enchilada, as it had the least onions (and other things my taste buds do not agree with) and the smoked tofu sounded deliiiiightful. I am sad to say I was disappointed. The menu looked AMAZING and I was so excited, but the taste didn't live up to the description. The tofu, quite honestly, just tasted burnt. Other than that, I really enjoyed it. The sauce, cheese and tortilla were all portioned perfectly, creating a perfect flavour sensation with every bite! I got rice and beans on the side, which was, well, rice and beans. We also got a pitcher of sangria (like you do!), and I'd say I prefer it over Foundation! All though they only had apples! And the green kind! Grrr, what's up with that? At first I thought $12 for a burrito was ridiculous, but it is quite large and comes with a side, so y'know. I was definitely filled to the brim. All in all, I'd totally go back. If you're vegan or vegetarian you must come for brunch here! There are so few places to get delicious (and filling) veg brunch options. After spending 2 months of winter away in Texas where few know what the word vegan even means, we immediately came here for breakfast our first day back. I was seriously dying for some delicious veggie carbs and thankfully our wish was granted! Now I can never decide on a benedict or french toast, so we got both, and then a breakfast plate (veganized) as well. I would say most things are the same foods just in different arrangements. So essentially one can build their own benedict from the cornbread and sides on the breakfast plate. We weren't that fussy, just really hungry and we devoured all 3 plates and were stuffed until dinner that day. They have a unique veggie scramble that's cut with mashed squashed as well so it has this yellow eggy colour. One of the better ones I've had at a restaurant. Most are usually too bland. I like the potatoes and their cornbread too. The only thing I'm not so keen on is the cabbage salad, and I love cabbage. If we only lived closer to commercial we would come more often. But alas we are in Kitsilano and have to settle for Sejuiced... (well not really, we don't even go there anyways) I hope to visit again soon for another filling breakfast. I would love it even more if the vegan French toast wasn't so darn expensive for 4 small pieces tho. $11.75? What is going on? Even the pineapple was removed from the dish. I don't get it. What a great vibe this place has! All vegetarian and vegan options and we didn't miss the meat at all. Ordered 4 tacos, small tortilla soup and an enchilada - great deal at $40 for the both of us. Lots of flavour. It's always busy so expect a wait, but it will be worth it! Breakfasts served all day. Brunch on the weekends and some inventive vegan desserts. If I could afford Bandidas every meal, I would become a vegetarian for life! Tacos can be mixed and matched. Guacamole is fresh and tasty. Bennys are out of this world (just how do they make those cornbread muffis?) and the wet burritos remind me of Mexico! Their house salad is absolutely divine, but that be attributed to the house balsamic vinaigrette and excessive sprinkling of pumpkin seeds. Everything is mostly served with the shredded red cabbage slaw and roasted yams/potatoes, which kind of makes all the dishes taste similar, until you develop a keen scent of the way tofu dances with chipotle sauce. Oh how they dance. To wash it all down, they had R&B Brewing Sun God Wheat and Red Devil Pale Ale on tap, and for a super reasonable price of $4.5. Not to mention the sangria and vegan bloody mary, and horchata for the kiddies. Their drinks alone can stand up to Moctezuma's revenge. Perhaps this is intentional, but the one thing I despise is how crowded it gets and the length of lines for dinner. We were seated quickly on a Thursday around 11:30AM. The waitress was friendly but the service was lacking any sort of speed or efficiency. We ordered drinks and food at once and waited over 15 minutes for a michelada and mimosa. It was not busy while we were there and the waitresses tend to gather around the bar and chat for extended periods. After several attempts I made eye contact with our server and she clued in we were still waiting for our drinks. Food came out timely and it was okay. We had the breakfast burrito baked with sauce and cheese and the Mexican breakfast. The burrito was very salty and the Mexican breakfast would be your usual American variation of the dish. The service was decent, we were served fairly quick just seemed like they could have had more of a smile or more excitement while working there! Their food was really tasty, and really filling for sure - my friend who doesn't like the idea of vegetarian food, he still enjoyed his meal. I drive by often, and usually see a line up but I guess we got there at a good time where we didn't need to wait to be seated so that we a bonus. Their nachos are great, the salsa that comes with it was amazing!!! But wasn't enough for the size of the nacho. So we asked for another one, and when the bill came it was $2 for a small dish of salsa... Would have been nice to have been told there's a charge for it, drive we wanted more but there wasn't that many chips left. I finally got around to giving this place a try on a date; it was both my and my date's first time at this place. The concept interested me: vegetarian Mexican food. I was also delighted that the establishment gave customers the option of 'vegan-ising' their dishes using Daiya cheese. I ordered the Dant's enchilada dish: corn tortillas stuffed with (Daiya) cheese and butternut squash, asked for the enchilada sauce and the rice-and-beans side. The dish was beyond delish. The enchiladas have lots of creaminess and body, no need for meat...did not miss the meat at all! The rice-and-beans side could use a bit more kick but it's nothing a little bit of hot sauce (provided right at the table) could fix! The place itself is typical 'Commercial Drive eating joint:' hipster feel, hip people (I definitely felt a tad outta place), hip decor (they turn off the lights at dinner time forcing you to use their table candles (I used the light from my smart phone) to read their menus but I was given very friendly attentive service! I gave their gluten-free chocolate cake a try and it was pretty darn good! My memo to the restaurant: PLEASE find out for sure if your tempeh is gluten free. The beauty of Mexican cuisine is that wheat can easily be avoided as Mexican is highly corn based. I love stopping by there every once in a while. Especially after a gym workout, or sports practice. Don't let the whole "vegetarian" thing steer meatheads away. You can hardly notice it with the flavours because they are very carefully put together. There seems to be drink specials most nights. Thursdays have $6 Moscow Mules, which are delectable. I ordered the fajitas most recently and I loved the beans and rice, along with the savoury roasted veggies to make into perfect little tacos. My girlfriend had the roasted poblano and it was a bit bland. It either needed a) more cheese, b)more bread and fry, c)spices, or d) all of the above. The butternut squash sweetness seemed to overpower any other flavor. One quip: The guacamole that comes for an extra $1? I wish the serving was a bit bigger. Also, remember to pay at the register. The taco with pumpkin seed on it is the MVP. Wow that is inCREDIBLE and such a game changer. Bandidas Taqueria is super charming and adorable. I LOVE how bright it is inside, great energetic vibes. I got the burrito in a bowl, which was super confusing because, i don't know,the burrito with cheese has a tortilla but the burrito in a bowl doesnt. I guess it was just a shock when the burrito did not have a blanket. But it's all good, we ordered chips and guac and made make shift nachos. I don't think I would ever order their house made non-alcoholic drinks again because everything i've ordered from them tastes like la croix - no flavour. Whether it's the ginger beer or the almond horchata. If I HAD to choose, i'd prob get the horchata again, but it honestly tasted soooo plain. WOuld love to try out their brunch some day. The flavours are awesome! Being relatively new (2 months) to veganism this place was bookmarked long before I arrived. The restaurant has the bohemian-commercial drive feel and look, right down to the mildly sketchy washrooms. It's average in cleanliness. Service was average, slightly friendly.... Although she lightened up throughout our meal. The homemade hot sauce placed on your table when you sit down kind of grosses me out; someone could lick the spoon, double dip, or put something in there. So not a fan of that, I feel small dishes or a squeeze bottle would be more hygienic. I ordered a plate of tacos and my carnivore partner ordered the chipotle tofu enchiladas. The rice and beans and guacamole add on were worth it. The tacos were awesome, the tortillas were just a tad soggy but the flavours and textures were delicious! The enchiladas were good, although perhaps too much of a mass of tofu to enjoy in one sitting - they were pretty dense. The flavours of the enchiladas were excellent, carnivore approved. Delicious hot and fresh salt spring coffee and Earnest vegan chocolate ice cream capped off this great meal. We'll be back for sure! read more

I first reviewed Bandidas 9 years ago. At that point, I was not yet a father, only a gourmand. But as somebody who now gets excited at the prospect of eating somewhere that isn't a chain restaurant, I very much appreciate Bandidas. Bandidas is unique in that not only is it friendly for children; it caters to families. Bandidas has a very small toy area for the kids to play with, a kids menu, booster seats, high chairs, and a nice changing table. And alcoholic drinks are inexpensive. And in my previous review, I complained about a lack of fat in the dishes, so I ordered something very fatty this time - a wet burrito. I couldn't really taste much of the fillings (which included butternut squash, spinach, roasted salsa and a number of other healthy things, because I was just focused on the cheese and ranchera sauce which covered the behemoth. I couldn't taste the whole wheat burrito, which is probably a good thing. And my wife was able to enjoy her meal as my kids played in the toy area (I watched them). read more

Since our original visit, this has become one of our favourite brunch spots in town. I usually order The Breakfast, which comes with a tofu scramble, roasted potatoes / yams, salsa, purple cabbage, beans, and a kickass corn muffin ($11++). My wife usually orders the vegan burrito baked with cheese. Portions are humungous and well-priced -- no chance you can walk out of here less than satiated. Bottomless coffee. Very...creative food, but my biggest complaint is that it's so damn bland. They have home made hot sauce but the first time I went here the bland undertones were present even with the hot sauce. Most recently I got the baked burrito bowl with goat cheese and that was a bit better... I still doused it with hot sauce asap. There are no free to go cups for drinks, they cost $2. But you can drink a drink at the bar while you wait for your to go order. They have a lovely horchata (especially with soy!) The staff seems very nice, if a bit overwhelmed on a busier night. Overall, I gave this place a second chance because I felt it had more to offer. For a veggie/vegan I think this place would be fun to hit up at least once. But realistically...what's the point of making Mexican food without all the spice and flavour. read more

Bandidas offers honest food! I always feel good after my Bandidas fix, and this is coming from one who loves meat, poultry, and fish. They've been serving freshly prepared vegetarian and vegan dishes for years. Breakfast or brunch, lunch or dinner, the food is usually tasty and hot. Like hot sauce? Their house-made habanero is killer! And the roast tomato salsa is a standout. A decent selection of craft beers on tap and cocktails are available. Nice desserts, too. If you're looking for totally authentic Mexican food, this is probably not for you. If you're looking for artfully plated dishes with tweezer-toting sous-chefs in full sight, ditto. If, however, you can appreciate an eclectic take on vegetarian and vegan dishes with a solid Mexican base, all served up in that increasingly elusive but classic East Van / Commercial Drive free-form style, this is it! A few caveats... Food may not be hot. Recently, a meal had to be returned to the kitchen because the eggs were cold. My beans were also a little too close to room temperature for my liking. Food quality can sometimes be off - tortilla chips arrived in tiny pieces on one occasion. Ask yourself if it makes sense to cover some room temperature ingredients (corn bread, for example) with a cold ingredient (guacamole or salsa), and then something that needs to stay hot as long as possible. In a nutshell, food quality is hit and miss. Service is usually friendly and attentive. However, on a recent visit, we had to actually leave our table and search for some flatware. Later, we had to wait for our table plates to be cleared before waiting again for our bill to be divided in two for the four in our party. Bandidas has some great things going for it, but it also has problems maintaining consistent standards and quality. Too bad. read more

Nachos were layered throughout with cheese so there were barely any stray naked chips (total nacho faux pas), which was much appreciated. Friendly service from people who seem happy to be there. Fabulous food. I had the "Connie" burrito. Walnuts gave it a nice slightly crunchy texture. Not what I expected in a burrito, but it was fantastic. Very filling. And I was very hungry, so that was so small feat. My girlfriend had tacos with chipotle tofu. It had a hint of sweetness with the cilantro. Both dishes were full flavored and satisfying. Highly recommended, especially for people looking for reasonably priced, ethical vegetarian food that doesn't compromise on taste or portion size. A great choice even for carnivores who think they've done their good deed for the environment by changing a couple of their lightbulbs to CFLs. read more

I ordered delivery through an app. The Burrow got the order wrong resulting in an overcharge of about $50 (didn't get the food I'd ordered). In the intervening 11 days, I have emailed them twice, phoned and left a message when nobody answered - no response. I like the food alot and have been eating there for years but I am really disappointed by the lack of customer service on this one. Came here with my bf and a group of friends for my friend's late birthday hangout. He wanted Mexican food but no one knew a good place to have Mexican food that everyone agreed on. He was actually bummed out when he found out it was vegetarian but my other friend and I told him that this place was pretty good for Mexican food. We ordered a huge plate of nachos which reminded me of the nachos at Foundations (oh how I miss that place) because they would bake the whole dish so the tortilla chips come out all nice and warm, and crunchy. Some restaurants don't even reheat their chips so it doesn't taste as great when its cold. The nachos were pretty good but I preferred Foundations nachos because their corn kernels come out all nice and fresh so you could taste that burst of sweetness. The corns on these nachos were overcooked and soggy. I ordered the mix and match 2 taco deal for $6.50. I had the Stella taco which had butternut squash (my favorite), pinto beans, spinach, roasted tomato salsa, cheese and sour cream, and the Ronny Russell taco which had roasted yams, guacamole, black beans, salsa verde, purple cabbage and pumpkin seeds. Both were delicious, and fully packed with flavor and food! The only thing I wished they did was toasted the tortilla shells more because they were quite soggy. I don't give 5-star ratings lightly, but Bandidas is nearly perfect. I could list my few and far between complaints first but that would hardly be fair! The food at Bandidas is always great and you get a lot for what you pay for. The prices are reasonable. I never feel ripped off and I always feel full and satisfied. They can veganize just about everything, which I totally appreciate. It seems like everyone I bring here loves it. Tuesdays their tequila lemonade is only $4. It's basically a cheap margarita and it's damn delicious, plus it's served in a mason jar. How charming! The daily specials are nice too. I always give myself an internal high five when the Camillo tacos are on special. Try them, they're my fave. Brunch at Bandidas is too good for words. One complaint is that most of the menu items are the same ingredients organized differently, but they all taste good. I usually just order the "breakfast" made vegan because it's the cheapest, but when I feel like splurging I get a veganized Hicks Benny and enjoy the crap out of it. Endless coffee. Cute servers. (So glad the one really rude, incompetent server is gone. She gave me lip so many times when I dared to mention that she'd brought me what I hadn't ordered.) I LOVE BANDIDAS. This place wins for favourite Vancouver restaurant now, I think, and they're so new. I love the bike-themed decorations. The tablecloths are so cute. Oh yeah - every once in a while I order vegan nachos and they almost invariably come out non-vegan. They've never messed up the veganity of anything else I've ordered, though, and I haven't had the nachos problem in about a year (maybe because I haven't ordered nachos in about a year).
