I always enjoy visiting this cafe on my annual visit to the area for the Houston rodeo. Brookwood is a residential facility that also provides vocational training and for jobs to adults with special needs. The cafe serves excellent lunches with a varied menu. I had salad that was stuffed with fresh lettuce, apples, candied pecans, blue cheese and a delicious apple vinaigrette dressing. I added grilled chicken, making it a healthy, yet filling meal. My friend had the chicken crepes which came with thick, beautiful asparagus and broccoli. The crepes were served with a mushroom cream sauce that made it a very rich dish. The chicken tortellini soup was the special of the day, and had a thick broth as the base, stuffed with chicken meat and cheese filled pasta. Everything was delicious, right down to the warm yeast rolls. Brookwood is a fun place to walk around after enjoying your meal because it has a beautiful nursery and gift shop with unique offerings, including some items made in the vocational programs. Many of the employees in the cafe and other commercial areas are part of the vocational programs, as well. All of them are friendly and proud to serve their patrons and supporters. read more

My church group of 18 recently visited Brookwood Community, a Special Needs Adult Facility for lunch and a tour. It was an absolutely great experience. The café was especially good. Decorated for the holidays, it was very festive, but even more important, the food and wait staff went beyond. Because of our size, we pre-ordered our lunches and had an 11 o'clock reservation, along with about 50 + other people. Our food came out almost immediately, and was nicely cooked and still warm. I think I'd like to come back again and give the cafe another chance. Maybe on a weekday. My sister made a reservation for a family 'girl's lunch' at 12:30pm on a Saturday. We arrived early and met in the onsite store for a little pre-lunch shopping. I picked up a couple nice items including seasonal coffee and homemade dog treats. This is a super-easy drive. Just a few miles past Katy, off of I-10W. The cafe supports the Brookwood Community Center. The service was very friendly. Ultimately, I was a little underwhelmed. Not disappointed or anything. I had a nice salad. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. But no one in my party raved about how great their meal was. Between the five of us, we split two huge desserts. I also hate to report this, but the bathroom was nasty. And it took emphatically advising the hostess, at least three times how seriously disgusting the bathroom was before any action was taken. I think somebody had an "explosive situation" in one of the stalls. The aftermath tracked itself throughout the restroom and even out a bit into the lobby. All of this to say, the grounds are lovely. The shop is definitely worth stopping by for that special holiday gift, or some thing unique for the person who has everything. They also have a convenient cooler filled with a variety of family-sized prepared meals that you can pick up and reheat at home such as lasagna and macaroni and cheese. read more

My wife and I meet an former co-worker for lunch at The Cafe At Brookwood. My co-worker suggested this place as she had been here before. She had made reservations and we went in for our lunch Very nice dining area, with tables with white table cloths and just a great atmosphere! This place employs people from Brookwood which helps people with disabilities and uses them in all areas of the restaurant. Robert was our server with Amber over seeing him. Drink orders were given and Amber and Robert brought our crafts of drinks to the table and poured us our drinks. We gave our orders, my wife selected from the side menu, tri-colored potatoes, asparagus and sautéed spinach. My co-worker got the chicken salad on a croissant. I order the Brookwood cheese burger that comes with garlic fries. Our orders came out and they looked fantastic, I had to order mayo and mustard for my burger. Then I noticed that they had tortilla chips instead of fries. So when I got my condiments I asked and they said that was an option, so I said yes please! In a few minutes my garlic fries came out. What a wonderful experience. This place is worth the drive. It is truly a peace of heaven. The gift shop is mind blowing! In fact it has several shops within one shop. It is an amazing gift shop with a plethora of hat, yes even cowboy hats, at reasonable prices. Unique clothing apparel, various jams , teas, brewing cups, dishes, art pieces. Ok , I can not name it all. You must make a short trip to onshore to visit this amazing place. Let me mention the garden with gorgeous plants, and s truly eked as it cafe. My notion is that the burgers are frozen patties, and may be pre-cooked. We have been here for several occasions ranging from my sister's very small wedding reception, to hosting a baby shower, to girls lunch for bdays. I love how I'm gettin a good meal AND supporting a great, local cause! And after you eat you can roam around their outdoor garden nursery and greenhouse to buy plants. They're little shop has clothes, and house decor, and a myriad of other surprises. I recommend trying the Lemon Chicken or Turkey Avocado Club paired with a Tropical Iced Tea. The service in the cafe has always been good. Your waiters/waitresses are adults with disabilities, and they take such pride in their work! This place was excellent. I came as a group so there were little salads in glasses pre-set for us. This was a bit weird. For someone like me it's just the right amount of salad. I found eating out of the little glass kinda fun, some other people seemed to have problems with it. One person at my table poured it on their bread plate. For me the rolls and citrus butter were so good I didn't even need the salad. I ordered the shrimp and grits. When it came out I was surprised by how elegant it looked. I felt like I was at a fancy restaurant. We topped off the meal with our choice of desert and I opted for the red velvet cheesecake (see the layers?). It was delicious. I like coming here. I really do. The shop, the greenhouse, the nice little cafe. Sometimes, however, the food is hit or miss. One time the burger was awesome and the garlic fries top notch. The next time the burger was ok and the fries limp and disappointing. I had the Mesibov salad--good salad, great dressing--with grilled chicken. The chicken was a bit dry. My dad had a simple grilled chicken dinner, and his was dry too. The other two had chicken salad sandwiches and loved them. I don't know if they were out of dessert or if they just forgot to offer it, but as the others in the group weren't going to indulge, I didn't ask. Overall, the service was ok considering how busy they were. It's still a good outing, and I recommend a visit. read more

I've been dining at this café on the Brookwood property since the 90s. And since then, the place has always been consistant in the quarlity of the food. Every spring I take my bff for a lunch here & to buy some spring plants. The cafe looks like a hotel dining room but what lacks in aesthetics the deliciousness of the food makes up for it. I usually go for the burger, chicken salad sandwich or the turkey avo sandwich. Can't beat the burger which is served on a sweet sourdough bun & loaded with veggies (including their crispy fried onions). Sandwiches are served with ranch seasoned tortilla chips which were surprisingly good. For an additional $4 you can sub your chips for something else. I would suggest the Mesibov salad which has red delicious apples, bleu cheese, candied pecans on a bed of fresh field greens. The dressing is out of this world and yes, they sell it in the gift shop! I recommend the apple mint tea as a beverage. Service is always polite & minimal wait for the food. Leave room for dessert, their selections change per season. read more

The sandwich I had was not that great for $16. I got a piece of their pecan pie and it was so bad I could not take a second bite. I told the waitress that the pie was disgusting and she told me since I ordered it, I had to pay for it even though it was bad. They overcharged me as well and did not give me a receipt, I did not know till I got home and looked online at my charge. All I saw was the tip page and signature line at the restaurant. The other day my wife and I decided to visit the Brookwood community center out in Brookshire, Tx which is not too far from where we live. This is a community that ministers to disabled adults and has a beautiful nursery, store, art gallery and cafe staffed by their residents. A lot of the products there are created and made onsite and all proceeds from the sales etc are used to benefit the organization and its causes. We had heard about the cafe from a friend which is open 7 days a week from 11 am to 2 pm. The cafe is set up in an elegant kind of formal way and serves very good food presented very beautifully and at a reasonable price! We thoroughly enjoyed the experience of the lunch and wandering among the well manicured grounds and checking out the beautiful store! This is one experience you don't want to miss if you live in the Houston area or even if you are in town and looking for a nice place to dine or meet someone. Call ahead for reservations though as they fill up rather quickly! They usually have lunch specials which are really great deals and the residents are so charming and full of joy! The feeling there is if a community that really cares about each other. Like family! Christian based and founded by a wonderful woman. Read the story of Brookwood and experience it for yourself! I landed here due to the excellent reviews. I thought it was going to be home style cooking. The culture was different, the reception at the entry was off. Maybe it was the time of day, but they should have said something if they could not serve fresh food. I ordered the special of the day, salad. The salad and chicken were so disappointing. My order arrived immediately which indicated it was pre-prepared. The dressing was pre-applied and so sweet seemingly without an acidic balance. The fried chicken that topped the salad was cold and batter was hard making it difficult to eat. Pricey for lunch at $17, too. I definitely recommend Chick-Filet salad and chicken over this. At least at Chick-Filet the dressings are delicious, and chicken is made to order. The server was nice. The tea was good. The salad greens were fresh, the dressing was the undoing. The money spent here goes back into the community programs, so you can feel good about spending your hard earned dollars here! Their signature Mesibov salad dressing is sold here, so you can take it right home with you! The grounds are lovely and they have a beautiful gift shop filled with wonderful items, many handcrafted by the residents. They also have a great nursery with a wide variety of plants and flowers, cared for by the residents.
