My new, made in America, seasoned 8" cast Iron skillet.
    Tess M.

Surfas delivers both in store or to your door! Backstory. Four years ago when I moved, married, I totally pared down my kitchen including a donation of a seasoned cast iron skillet trio. In the spirit of Marie Kondo, as I gently placed them in a cardboard box, I felt connection, a connection I ignored and let them go to a new home... Whoever got them had better be enjoying, taking pristine care of them, just sayin'... Fast forward. A recipe for Socca the French street food chickpea flatbread I am anxious to make requires a 10" cast iron skillet. Enter Surfas. If only I could go back with my BFFs to that day (see initial review) we ate, shopped and promised to return sooner than soon. But that was then and this is now. Hubby and I both considered at risk for Covid-19 by only our age, mask up, limit shopping, exposure in order to be safe until there is a well-tested vaccine. So, I went to Surfas online for that skillet and chickpea flour cuz this is the place to buy hard to find ingredients. Ordered the skillet (just an 8"; I can adjust recipe) but couldn't get the flour. Order placed. Promised for next day, Wednesday delivery. Hours later, voicemail, email to let me know with apologies that that wasn't feasible. NO worries on my end but really appreciated the follow-up, customer service. One day later. Thursday, a knock on my door, my new cast iron skillet arrived. Masked, gloved, Surfas delivery guy wanted to take a pic of me receiving my purchase but due to extreme bedhead, I cracked the door, grabbed the bag's handles for the photo op. Many thanks, Surfas! Can't wait to dine in, shop again...

Decently tasty food in a no frills location surrounded by cooking supplies? Sign me up! Surfas is a great stop for serious cooks- those that understand some pricy ingredients are worth it, and often best cooked up using commercial grade tools. The cafe is a simple counter service location in the middle of the store, with a small cheese and meat case, sandwich case, and dessert case. Sandwiches are prepped in advance, but thrown on the panini press when ordered. I was worried this might affect the freshness, but even when we stopped in an hour before closing, it tasted great. Sandwiches come with some basic greens and creamy balsamic that's packed up in to go containers. A couple tables flank the exit doors, with the bulk of seating outside. A limited selection of bottled drinks were available for purchase, including some deliciously tart but balanced lemonade. The food itself was a bit more varied than you'd see in a regular sandwich shop. My tomato and fig panini had a wonderfully "funky" cheese that probably wouldn't show up on most menus because it's not a typical crowd pleaser. Here, amongst the goody crowds, I was able to enjoy the stinky, melted goodness of quality cheese to my heart's content. While we didn't partake, the desserts looked tasty, and they also carry coffee and tea. Service was friendly and quick, and prices reasonable. Stop in while picking up cooking supplies and enjoy a quick bite.

Cute outdoor patio and lots of free parking in back.

This was one of the closer coffee spot with good reviews that I found near the kbbq place (Seogwan by Yellow Cow Kbbq) my family and I ate at for lunch. It was about 0.5miles (3 mins drive). The coffee shop is super large, bright, and has nice background music. There are plenty of seats for people to hang out or study. There are also street parking but can be difficult to cross the street due to cars driving by so quickly without a pedestrian crosswalk on one side. I ordered their signature drink which was the orange espresso tonic with one extra shot for my husband, and the double mango matcha for myself. Both of us really enjoyed the drinks, especially the orange espresso tonic. It was refreshing, clean, and easy to drink. Normally, they include double shots of espresso, which may have tasted stronger for me since my husband wanted three shots, and I usually stick with two shots. The double mango matcha uses fresh fruit syrup so the mango flavor was not too strong and my drink was very creamy due to the signature mango cream on top. Usually, I would enjoy a creamy matcha but it made me more thirsty on a hot day. The service took a bit of time since they had to mix my matcha the legit way with the bamboo whisk. The matcha tasted like premium, ceremonial matcha since it was stronger and authentic in taste. Overall, both drinks were enjoyable but if I had to choose one, I would go with the orange espresso tonic even though I love mango matcha!

Van Dyke Coffee Roaster (est. 08/2025) is a relatively new coffee shop in Koreatown, Los Angeles, at West Olympic Blvd. The cafe features a very spacious interior x outdoor seating; thus, it works equally well for focused work sessions, study days, or a relaxed midday break. They have copious signature lattes, hot/cold coffee, coffee bags, pastries and friendly baristas. Their interior decor is modern with long maple wood center table and a relaxing atmosphere. I came late morning to grab a Flat white. And it was strong despite its hobbit size--8oz-- appearance albeit good quality. The female barista who wore a pulchritudinous blue checkered, white folded sleeves that almost matched my blue/white striped long-sleeved shirt was assiduous. I could have absconded with her. lol. Anyways, their service was spot on, however, the price seems above market price. Overall, I had a good experience from VDC. I recommend you visit.

It's a very cute and cozy coffee shop and there was no line when we arrived. The menu had a huge selection of different coffee and tea drinks and also a seasonal menu. The staff were very kind and patient and swiftly prepared the Vienna Latte and Hojicha Latte we ordered. The Vienna Latte is so visually stunning, the layers of white milk, brown espresso, thick white cream, brown cocoa powder and Biscoff layered on top of each other against the dark green logo was so aesthetic. Having a sip before mixing the Vienna latter was incredible, the sweet cream followed with the nutty strong espresso flavour then getting a refreshing splash of milk made a great combo with the Biscoff. I actually liked the drink less after its all mixed because it was too creamy for my taste. (I normally like my coffee black) My hojicha latte was great, but it was also too milky for me. So I went up and asked if it would taste good dirty, with an espresso shot in it, and the barista said yes. I ordered an espresso shot and instead of charging me full price, they only charged me the add on espresso shot for the drink! ($1.50 instead of $4) It was very kind of them since it was absolutely my mistake for not ordering the right drink in the first place. The shot added much depth and flavour to the hojicha latte I was craving. Thanks for the wonderful service. I'm definitely coming back to try their other specialty drinks.

No bitterness, no chalky aftertaste that cheaper ceremonial-grade pretenders leave behind. Just clean, grassy depth with a texture that's silky rather than gritty. This is someone who actually sources well and knows how to whisk Didn't stop there. The seasonal peach jasmine tea was the surprise standout ..floral jasmine up front, real peach sweetness (not syrup-bomb fake fruit) on the back end. Balanced in a way that seasonal drinks rarely pull off; most places either overdo the fruit or underdo the tea. This one's dialed in. Iced Spanish latte rounded things out and didn't miss either; espresso with enough backbone to cut through the condensed milk instead of getting buried by it. A lot of places let the sweetness take over; ROK kept the coffee actually tasting like coffee. 4 drinks, zero misses. That's not luck; that's a program that's actually dialed in behind the counter. This isn't a place riding on aesthetics and a good logo the drinks back it up. The matcha is legit, good quality stuff Come open up in OC you batches
