We have been coming to the Cakery for 20 years now. I ordered my wedding cake there, my son's 1st birthday cake, and most of the birthday cakes for my parents. From the viennoiseries to the cakes, we have always been happy with the quality. Unfortunately for the past year, every time we came to get our croissants or the cakes, the mousse, or even the cupcakes, they were quite dry :( We hope the quality will go back up. We want to write this review before we forget how wonderful this place was! First of all, they are affordable. We will say that again, they are AFFORDABLE. Possibly the best value for wedding cakes on the Peninsula-- and trust us, we've tried quite a few. We got a three layer cake (you can see our pictures). We chose the hazelnut and mocha flavor with Grand Marnier filling... delish! Although this cake didn't pop on our tongue like Draeger's cake (our 2nd choice, but a tad too expensive), it served it's purpose-- tasty, edible, and beautiful. If you're still reading this review, you probably are interested in The Cakery from the lens of planning a wedding. Our two cents is that few people ever remember what the cake tasted like, so as long as it's not horrendous, you should pocket the extra $200-300 and put it into something with more bang for your buck (we suggest a good wedding coordinator). To be honest, the cake did not turn out EXACTLY like we imagined. The pastry chef tried to follow the design we handed to them as close as possible. Instead of the green marble, the design was supposed to be more stripey. However, we can't knock this bakery for it's mediocre presentation-- the main reason we wanted a cake was for the pictures (we had a chocolate fountain as well). The Cakery's service is no frills. The associates are friendly, but not entirely hospitable. But it's not Nordstrom or Gary Danko, so we weren't expecting anything spectacular. I found The Cakery through the San Mateo Marriott as they are the SMM's preferred vendor. From the day we went in for the tasting to all the follow up appointments and email, Maria was welcoming and always worked with me to create the perfect wedding cake for me. Taste: We set up an appointment for tasting where I picked a few filling and cake flavors. They were ALL so freaking delicious! We tried chocolate marble cake with various chocolate mousse fillings, as well as white cake with lemon, raspberry, passion fruit, etc. And a big plus to this place for having exotic fillings such as passion fruit and mango! YUM!! But in the end, the Passion Fruit filling with White Cake and a Lemon Cream Filling with white cake was what stole my heart for the 4 tiers. Decoration: I wanted a wedding cake designed with an indian flare, but also something that looked traditionally american. What I came up with was 2 tiers of Indian inspired upsidedown taj mahal onion shaped domes and 2 tiers of american inspired quilted fondant with gold dots. Maria said no problem! I walked her through the decor with pictures, drawings, and color swatches and Maria was always more than willing to help me make sure I recieve that cake I had envisioned. When I saw the cake, I was floored! It came out so much better than I had expected! We had people taking numerous pictures of it! It looked so pretty, I almost felt bad cutting into it! I came here for cookies after eating at Crepevine. I tried their chocolate fudge raspberry, chocolate fudge, regular vanilla sugar cookie and chocolate sugar cookie. I have to say that the raspberry one didn't have a strong distinct flavor but the chocolate fudge without raspberry you are really able to taste like a ganache type creaminess to it. We have been a loyal customer for over 10 years after they moved from SF. Each of the 3 recent purchases has been so disappointing - quality is compromised to cut cost. 1) The chocolate mouse cake was no longer a chocolate mouse cake. It is layered with soggy vanilla sponge cake with very thin layer of chocolate mouse which seems to be a leftover cake from a few days. 2) Coffee cake need to be preordered. 3) Customer service is lacking and somewhat rude. Tried to buy apple strudel and asked if I could buy the whole strudel instead of the cut ones as displayed. I have purchased cakes from The Cakery on several occasions in the past and cakes have been good - have never had any issues until this past weekend. I picked up a cake to celebrate a family birthday. I have no idea how long that cake was either sitting in the refrigerator or freezer... But it was terrible. If you are a bride and want a stress-free and reliable process DO NOT choose this store! I've never written a negative review but I think it's important to convey how disappointed we were with the entire process of designing, ordering a receiving our wedding cake from Maria. We did a cake tasting with The Cakery about 4 months before the wedding and based on this, we chose to go with Maria to do our cake. During the 4 months leading up to the wedding, my (now) wife had multiple points of contact with Maria to confirm that she was still able to do the cake and that we were on her list. 2 weeks before, my wife contacted Maria again to confirm and made a plan to go in to the store on the Wednesday before the wedding on Friday evening to finalize the design and organize the delivery. During this meeting, she told us she had no record of our order and filled out the order sheet AGAIN with the date of the wedding and said she'd get hold of us the following week to make payment and it was not at all necessary that we pay anything then. THE DAY BEFORE THE WEDDING she called up asking when the wedding was!! We said it was the next day and sent her a copy of the order sheet that SHE had filled out THE DAY BEFORE! At this point she said we had to make a payment IMMEDIATELY or she wouldn't make the cake! When the cake did arrive at the wedding (to our surprise) there was a big dent on the side, the design was not as agreed and it was much drier and almost stale compared with what she had presented to us at the tasting. read more

We ordered the opera cake, the mouse is not fluffed so it is like eating a stick of butter and the cake is too dry. We got the pound cake and it is also dry and consistently salty. We got the princess cake with plain decoration and dry cake. Their expresso maker was being cleaned so we had the drip coffee which we couldn't drink. The decorations of the cakes overall is subpar and not as elegant as they should be. The staff can be more hospitable and friendlier. I ordered a tres leches cake from The Cakery for my daughter's birthday. Tres leches is a tradition that my daughter loves on her birthday and it was the one thing that she asked for. We picked up the cake and when it came time to serve the cake, we discovered that it was just a regular vanilla cake. My daughter was terribly disappointed as was I. I called the Cakery and they claimed that I had received a tres leches cake citing that different countries have different recipes for tres leches. Well I ordered stuff for Valentines Day Drove all the way there 31 miles and so far disappointed. Cookies were nothing like the website for 5.25 a cookie they were hard and ugly. The heart heart shaped princess cake was to be purple and we got green. Haven't tasted that yet but will let you know. Princess cake excellent. 5 star on that one. While there decided to give cupcakes a try. Although moist frosting terrible. Thought I was buying chocolate chip cookies that were pre packaged and those ended up be raisin and pre packaged peanut butter were decent. We remembered this place from a previous visit. We were going to moms for dinner and needed to bring some kind of dessert. It was nice to see that The Cakery pays attention to non-caucasian holidays as well and had a couple of items for Chinese New Years. There was a sugar cookie with the design of a dragon on top as well as some small four-bite cakes with Chinese characters. One was chocolate with a chocolate filling and the other was vanilla, I forget the filling. They also had a cake that they were taking pre-orders for. Service was once again exceptional and friendly. I love their mini cakes! They're so appropriate for spontaneous cake giving...and eating. I like their princess cake slice. This is where I realized my love for princess cake. For those who aren't familiar, princess cake goes like this from the bottom to the top layer: white cake, raspberry (jam-like, no seeds), maybe some kind of custard?, white cake, whip cream, green marzipan and then maybe some chocolate design on top. It's so tasty! and i like their slices better than Copenhagen's because they actually make a different shaped cake just for the purpose of selling it as a slice...instead of just cutting a slice from their large round cake (which makes for uneven eating (ie. every bite you take is different...some will have more marzipan and whipped cream than others)...but! at The Cakery, each bite is similar to the last in that you have marzipan, whip, cake and raspberry in each bite. Their specialty is their cake. They do sell cookies and cupcakes, but they're not as good as their cake. Although their cupcakes are cute, because they always put a plastic ring with a character (elmo, dora, nemo...spiders, pumpkins (for halloween)) on the frosting (just to dress them up a bit, i suppose)...so i've gotten those just for fun sometimes. I've ordered an assortment of mini's on different occasions, and they're always delicious. You can tell that there is care put in to each cake (mini and regular size) because the details are taken care of. They look and taste great. I also ordered a half sheet of their strawberry short cake one time...oh man it was delicious. The strawberries were fresh and not sour and made a good balance with the cake and whip...it was so tasty! I've had their princess cake on many occasions (ie. birthdays, bridal showers etc.) and i've always enjoyed the experience...of eating it! I like how it's a square/ rectangular cake...that way, you don't have too much whip in one area...and it makes it easier for cutting. The person who took my order on the phone was very patient and kindly explained to me all my different cake options as well as telling me in great detail what a Swedish Princess cake consisted of. I came across The Cakery 5 years ago when I was trying to find a cake for my big 18th birthday celebration. I already had an idea of what I wanted my cake to look like before visiting locations. I set-up a taste testing with The Cakery. YUM! YUM! YUM! I love cake-testing; it's seriously the best part! :) Service was really good & very accommodating, especially because my sister-in-law & her infant son came along. I absolutely LOVED LOVED LOVEDDD my birthday cake! it was everything I had asked for & more! =D I was totally satisfied & extremely happy. For as much as this bakery owner would like to go back and minimize their mistake. They still don't seem to understand that I have proof with emails, of what the cake was supposed to look like. And to paint a mental picture, an 8 inch hot pink cake with a shooting star and pine tree on the sides. They charged me $195. And that's for just full buttercream and maybe 5-6 fondant shooting star and pine tree. With a BIG 13 as the candles/topper. I was ok with the price because I knew the cakes are usually delicious and had full faith in them. I should've done my research about the new owners. Unfortunately this new management does not seem to be fair or professional and will try to gaslight you into something you didn't want. Also, I didn't speak with the cashier the whole time. I spoke with her for about 2 min. Then one of the owners got I'm the phone and started asking why I was making such a big deal about this. They can say yell all they want but I clearly stated what the problem was multiple times and the owner kept trying to give me something that I didn't pay for. Even after I said, just give me a refund for the candles and give me the cake as is MULTIPLE TIMES just to get the same circle argument to give me the $4 candles. I ordered a custom cake for my little ones birthday. The cake was to be incredibly simple- no frosting just round rainbow colored cakes stacked high with cream in between. With something so simple, it needs to be executed flawlessly. Well... I got a poorly put together, sad cake that looked like I made it myself in the dark. The layers were all different thicknesses and they were not round, someone had cut them to shape by hacking away at the cakes into uneven octagonal shapes for some insane reason. Frankly it was embarrassing and they had the gall to charge $85 for this. I am giving two stars for the two wonderful employees (a young woman and man) who apologized profusely and understood completely why I was dismayed. My child has never had a proper birthday due to covid so this was going to be special, but unfortunately the cake was a disaster. After reading all the great reviews about The Cakery, I thought we'd have a hit birthday cake for my son's big first birthday celebration last month. I was excited to be able to use their edible paper feature, since I was decorating the entire party myself and using the logo I created throughout the party and now- even the cake! First of all, the ordering was easy, I was able to communicate and email my design to the cakery easily and according to my husband, the pick-up was a no brainer, no hassle, etc. But, what should a bakery be known for? It's CAKE! To my great disappointment, when we cut into the cake that day I found out that nobody at the party liked it. The cake tasted completely dried out and the mousse wasn't moist and rather flaked off of your fork. I heard from several family members (who were honest enough to tell me) that the cake was so bad they took one bite and threw the rest away and didn't offer any to their kids. I was so mad! Of course, I was busy having fun at the party, I didn't get a chance to try the cake, but after the party was over, I wanted to dig into it... to my surprise the cake looked totally UNTOUCHED. We had about 80 guests at our party, and we got a 1/2 sheet of cake that should've been almost devoured and it was almost COMPLETELY INTACT. That says a lot about the cake quality, and the taste of the cake. So, to help a fellow business owner out, I decided I would save the cake and bring it back to The Cakery so that they can redeem themselves by either offering me a full refund, or doing something to satisfy this unhappy customer who had served what tasted like "day old cake" to my 80 birthday party guests. again, to my great disappointment, the owners at the Cakery were not helpful and were not responsive. It took me going in to bring them my almost uneaten cake, explanations to the owners, then 2 follow-up phone calls for what? NOTHING. Absolutely no return phone call, no response and no answer to my question about why a $100 cake would taste like 1-2 day old cake that no one at a kid's birthday party would want to eat.
