The Cakery is David to Copenhagen's Goliath. I'm a little weak on my biblical studies, not being religious and all, but I seem to recall David slaying Goliath against all odds. I'm not saying I want anything of the sort to happen to Copenhagen--the Avenue benefits from both of these great places. But if push ever comes to shove, I'm throwing in with The Cakery. Why? They've got the most heavenly cupcakes! They aren't disgustingly extravagant and over-produced like many places known for their cupcakes, but they are a solid few bites of de-lish-ush! This place is perfect for picking up a cake or just an afternoon treat for your stroll down Burlingame Ave. The cakes are affordable at about $20 for a small/medium size decorated cake. On my recent visit, I picked up a slice of the Swedish princess cake which was pretty tasty. They use an almond flavored marzipan (the green covering of cake) on the outside of the cake and is layered with white cake and a raspberry filling. I hate this place. This is now the third time I've walked out because there's 5 people behind the counter and no one helps you! The last time I was there I bought some pretty Christmas cookies that were good but the woman behind the counter acted like she couldn't bother. I had to force her to help me! I literally had to yell to her 'I'd like to buy these can you please ring me up?' I came here after visiting some of the other bakeries in the area, and this one just didn't measure up. The baked goods looked just all right, but I never judge a food by its appearance. Taste is what matters. And taste I did. I was slightly disappointed with the dryness of the cookies I tried. My brownie had a distinct lack of flavor. Not sure why. The princess cake was also just so-so. Call me crazy, but I actually prefer Copenhagen's princess cake. We love The Cakery!! We came here in search for a custom cake for our daughter's 1st birthday. The lady we worked with was super nice and make sure everything was what we wanted. I followed up with someone by email and they responded very quickly. On the day we picked up the cupcakes and cake it was super quick. They had everything packed and ready to go. They cake and cupcakes were super cute!!! It was way better than the pictures I had sent them. It was so pretty I didn't even want to cut into it! Everyone was really surprised that it was a real cake!! The cake was delicious and not too sweet. We had white cake with lemon curd and lemon butter cream. I used to love buying your chocolate chip cookies until the most recent 5 batches have been stale. $5 totally wasted! You would think I would have learned my lesson by now. Okay, so this happened in 2005 but I discovered yelp recently so I'm trying to catch up with my reviews. They made my wedding cake. It was beautiful. But when my husband and I went to cut the cake we had troubles cutting through the layer. We smiled at each other and got just a tiny piece out...enough to serve each other some cake. After the event, I found out that half of my guests didn't receive any cake because the center was frozen. The catering staff did their best trying to serve it but my co-worker told me that the servings were not full slices. (because they had to cut around the frozen part!) My sister in law acted at the wedding coordinator (thanks Dora!) and she immediately called the following day to complain about the cake. (I had already taken off on my honeymoon.) Whoever she spoke to wasn't helpful at all and they insisted that they never freeze cakes. Well, if that's the case, then their refrigerator is too cold! I would have been happy if they offered me a partial refund but they refused. Luckily I charged the cake so my credit card company intervened. My caterer wrote a letter for me that pretty much stated that in his entire catering career he has never seen a wedding cake that had a frozen center...and that it was near impossible to serve the cake. So I got a free frozen wedding cake thanks to my credit card company. Till this day I'm still bummed that my guest got tiny cake slivers or no cake at all..... read more

My tastes have definitely gotten more sophisticated since I've last gone here, and it kind of saddens me to say that The Cakery seems to be more of a boutique bakery than a serious bakery. The Cakery tends to cater to people's thoughts that what's appealing to the eyes will always be appealing to the palate. And in my own humble opinion, The Cakery seriously violates the 'Function over form' mentality. Call me unclassy, but I would much rather take a mediocre looking cake that tasted divine over a visual masterpiece that tasted like something one can buy from the local grocery. I cannot fault them for doing what they do, especially once I consider their location. Sadly, a mom and pop's bakery would never do well in such a snooty locale. With all the haut couture boutiques and other establishments that cater to those who are at least upper-middle-class, The Cakery fits the bill. I really want to change my rating to one star, but I can't. Once you get through all the look-at-me aesthetics of the cakes and pastries, you do find a gem, and to me, it's still the tiramisu. While not as good as I thought it was back then, I do enjoy how the flavors are distinct. After all, it's kind of hard to find a tiramisu with enough liqueur to punch you in the sinuses. And I do enjoy the occasional punch. I won't be going out of my way to come back, but I would consider making a visit if I were ever in the area. read more

The sugarless strawberry shortcake is divine!!! I recently was there and they have amazing mini cakes that melts your mouth, and im not a sweet lover but gosh, i cant wait to go and pick some more, the strawberry shortcake was DELICIOUS, fluffy and LIGHT, the angel cake is to die for, melts in your mouth, and in plus, they're very friendly. We ordered two birthday cakes from the cakery. To be honest i wouldnt have got the second cake but I had already put down a deposit. While the decorations on the cake were nice the cake tastes awful. Super dry and flavorless. I love cake and didnt even finish my piece because it wasnt worth the calories. I brought some of the cake into work and my coworkers agreed that is was very dry and bland. --- Review for wedding cake only --- Note: My now wife and I were really picky when it came to choosing vendors for the big day so picking a stinking bakery was STRESSFUL! (Hang in there guys!) We did a tasting with Maria and she was extremely helpful, friendly and polite - Not pushy at all, very matter of fact and wanted us to be entirely confident if we chose them. The bakery itself wasn't all that nice inside but that doesn't really matter. The cakes were just okay... That is, until we got to their 'premium flavors'. The normal flavors (I have no idea which ones) were okay and were nothing to write home about but their premium flavors were good. We went to several bakeries and this was the best by far. I'm more or less neutral when it comes to cakes and desserts in general but my now wife (Ahh!) is a dessert aficionado and she was more than pleased which makes me a happy man! (I think) the layers of our cake were devil's food + mocha cream and red velvet + strawberry cream. Can't stress it enough - It was simply really good cake. Not just wedding cake, but it was just good cake in general. If you want to spend a couple thousand on your cake, go for it. But trust me, spending more doesn't guarantee it will taste better. :) Delivery on our wedding day was perfect. The cake showed up on time and looked amazing - EXACTLY what we (she) wanted. MANY compliments on the cake itself and lots of our guests said it was better than many other wedding cakes they've had. Being in the wedding season of our lives, I'd have to agree when comparing our friends' cakes that we've had at their weddings - Ours was better. Their sample wedding cakes are way too moist. I believe they beat the eggs into watery form or perhaps too much milk. There was zero sponginess. I hope they remedy this before our wedding. Furthermore, the sampling took way too long, we were waiting for the manager to come back for some 15 to 20 minutes after she left to fiqure dimensions then later to come back and follow up with us. This took so long, we got a parking ticket in the metered lot located at the back of the establishment which irritated me to no end. When I asked if there was anything that could be done about the ticket, the manager said "Nothing". An additional thing I do not like about this establishment is that in order to recieve the cake pictured in their portfolio, there is an extra charge for everything, i.e. sugar flowers, drapes, anything that makes the cake special. That's some shady advertising if you ask me, but at least they do list the extra cost off to the side. I just do not like the fact that to get the cake pictured, I have to pay extra. I was highly optimistic going into our tasting today, but after this experience, paying a $40 parking ticket for mediocre at best cake, I think I will pass. The manager didn't even spell our names right. The only reason we are using this vendor, is that it is included in the package we have with our reception location. On a positve, I would really like to taste their Grand Marnier cake, but will probably have to find another retailer who makes it. read more

I highly recommend the triple chocolate: perfectly moist chocolate cake with a light chocolate mousse. It's perfect for those that love to overdose on the chocolate, but don't want a dense brick. And, extra points if you can keep yourself from stealing the white chocolate curls directly from the cake. Aside from the cakes, there's a lovely selection of cookies and macaroons and festive things for the holidays. Most cakes are also available in a 6" size for under $20, definitely perfect to pick up and bring to a dinner party. But, for me, I'm happy enough just to walk in and ogle the goodies. read more

So it's not as crazy busy and elaborate as other bakeries, but DAMN do they make a mean cake and some seriously yummy cupcakes that certain people in my life occasionally are spoiled by. And the lady there is a doll. This morning, while the patient (idiots) were waiting for the new iphone across the street, I bought our staff cupcakes as a thank you for one contractor's work. Before I reached my car, one lady asked if I bought cookies. "Nope, cupcakes" I replied. "I'll give you $5 for one." I shit you not. My reply was simple, "Vanilla or chocolate?" She gave me a crisp lincoln for ONE cupcake. Then the dude next to her said he'd buy a vanilla one. I sold all 6 for $30. Since their spots in line were of such high value, I should've pimped out croissants at $10 a pop Note to fellow entrepreneurs out there. ;) I returned to buy more cupcakes at $1.65 each. 5 stars based totally on taste alone. Everything is fabulous. Maybe you need to let the cupcakes come down to room temperature first before inhaling and the frosting is often imperfect looking but everything made here is ridiculous yummy. Almond croissants with generous marzipan fillings, raspberry rings, chocolate brioche, all morning pastries are fabulous. Coffee crunch cake is an all time favorite. Chocolate covered angel food cake is our go to cake for every special occasion, even people who claim to not like cake have a piece and say how good it is. So happy with our wedding cake and dessert table!!! We decided to do a small cake with several other desserts so people had choices. Had my family not saved me some cake, all I would have tasted was the portion smushed on my face! Everything was gone by the end of the night. It was a hit! Even though the cake was only two tiers, it turned out even prettier than I pictured. They helped coordinate delivery, placing a colored ribbon and cake toppers I provided, set-up at our venue, and flower placement on the cake with my florist. We had white cake with mango filling and marzipan frosting. Yummy!!! We also ordered several of their "VIP's" (small pastries) including fruit tarts, macaroons, chocolate covered strawberries, princess cakes, and cheesecakes. Loved everything! The cake tasting was fairly informal which worked well for us. They would give us several samples all labeled and then walked away so we could taste and talk about it before we made our decision. This review is solely for the Swedish Princess Cake. It has been one of my favorite cakes since my coworker ordered one for my birthday. It is so fluffy and moist. All of the layers are perfect. I like that the marzipan isn't too thick and that it tastes so light! The last time we came we ordered one slice to share and ended up taking 3 more home lol. My Mom has been raving about this bakery for months now, she's the original sweet treat lover in our family, I can only aspire to be as decadently sweet loving as she is. So I suggested she get our holiday goodies from The Cakery for Thanksgiving to see what all the fuss was about. She brought over the Bavarian Custard cake and a Hazelnut Layered cake. Both were quite good, but I'm turning into less and less of a cake person it seems, as I wasn't bowled over at all by either of them. The Bavarian Custard portion of the cake was very good but the chocolate cake itself nothing special. My husband liked the Hazelnut Cake more than the Bavarian Custard. Hazelnut was light and rich at the same time, but not overpowering at all. We had multiple chances with the Hazelnut as Mom left it behind...she loved the Bavarian Custard much better! Tempted to try other things at this place, but won't be rushing over. My Mom swears they have great cookies and other goodies, so maybe next time I'm in B'game I might try them again...but until then I have other sweet treat visits in mind!! read more

Cupcake was a disappointment, comparable to what you can buy at Safeway, and Safeway's not known for its bakery department. I was served by two surly looking females.
