Used to have a host in tuxedo, which was hysterical in a place that looks like the old fashion soda counters in the 5 and Dime! But it's like a step back in time. Oh my... i'm a local here in New Orleans and my dear friend. Wanted to go eat breakfast there because she hadn't been in a while. I arrived before she did and oh my goodness, I said underneath an air conditioner that was dripping so I moved and right when I sat down, she came in to join me. Everything was disgustingly greasy, the countertop, The salt and pepper shakers, and coffee sweeteners, everything was so greasy and gross, and had not been wiped down in FOREVER! Before we went, I read these reviews and I was so looking forward to dining there for breakfast. I love breakfast and sometimes even enjoy it at night. But this? Oh no my friend. All of you who think you're eating omelettes? That's not just eggs that's got something mixed in with it that makes it super thick.. And believe me when I tell you, it does not look healthy. I ordered a hamburger and fries and a side of onion rings to share with my friend because she loves them. Everything was so greasy, not seasoned. The french fries didn't even have salt and pepper. Everything was so gross, the beef patty on my hamburger was disgusting. My friend wanted her food boxed so I got mine boxed up as well and I threw it in the dumpster on the way home, you should as well.. Tasteless, disgusting food and there is no butter there. The service was pretty good, took about 15 minutes to get are ordered beverages. But they did bring water when we asked in the beginning. You have to be patient because they have a system on taking your order to make sure the cook is ready. You will probably have to wait in line for about 15 minutes depending on how busy it is the place only sits about 25 people. It's normal diner food. If you're in the area, you should try it. The Camellia grill is something you should experience at least once but we probably wouldn't go back often because the food wasn't spectacular, but it was good, but the wait wasn't worth our experience for us and it's kind of cramped in there. I kept getting elbowed and I was elbowing the person next to me. We did meet some regulars they say they always come in for the pie. I think it's better for lunch, they have breakfasts, and they give large portions. If you're looking for the classic local diner experience, this is it. The prices were really good. The place has classic Diner decor with history of the area and the diner, which was fun to look at. I want to say that I had the hamburger steak and fries with gravy and mashed potatoes and green beans, it's definitely comfort food, I was in a happy place so I say if you want to be in a happy place and go back to when you were a kid when grandma or mom cooked you a meal this is what you get here. read more

Great place to start your day or end your night. This is a classic Nola diner that stays in my rotation. The lines are often long and for good reason. Waiters are funny and entertaining so you get a little dinner and a show. My go to is the chefs special. It's very filling, meaty, and delicious. Make sure to get there super early! We got there before 11 on a Friday and still had a wait. I don't remember waiting this long in the past, but it's been a while since I've eaten there. I got a delicious Greek omelet with hash browns and coffee. Same consistently good food. The only thing that spoiled our lunch was another patron who thought it was okay to have a Bluetooth speaker in his backpack blaring awful music directly in our direction. My SO didn't want me to go speak with the man who seated us, so we were resigned to being deafened by really, really bad music. They sat us in a couple minutes and had our orders out in 10 minutes. Everything from eggs to gumbo to waffles to burgers. I've been coming here for over 50 years and nothing changes, ever. And in some cases that's good, as it is at this NOLA institution. It's absolutely a 'greasy spoon' type establishment, but indeed a cherished one. There's only counter seating and at times it gets tight between seats, creating an often communal atmosphere with fellow diners. It's not unusual for conversation to strike up which adds to the enjoyment. The place looks like something out of the 1930s or 40s. Service is friendly and attentive and they do keep it moving along. In my experience there may be a blip here or there, but when it happens they get on it. Today I had the Chef's special omelet with chili. It's a massive thing with many of the usual "everything" breakfast ingredients plus a huge amount of delicious chili on top They ask if you want the chili. It's enough of a meal to last the day. Along with it I had a side order of the absolutely creamy and delicious grits. My dining partner had the waffle and bacon that were apparently "OK", nothing special. After reading so many great reviews & realizing I was in the neighborhood, I decided to walk to Camellia's last night where I was greeted with nothing but smiles and great energy. I ordered the ham and cheese sandwich and mac & cheese to go, walked 20 minutes to my home and it was absolutely delicious, It hit all the spots & the kind of mac & cheese also that I have been craving all week. You even get to watch the food being made right in front of you, my compliments to the chef and the kind gentlemen who helped me, especially Chad. There is also a lovely hostess with a beautiful smile, waiting to help you get seated somewhere. If you're in the neighborhood or in town and you need some good Diner eats, then I'd absolutely recommend you stop by this place, it's right along the street car path and very convenient. A local recommended I try this restaurant for breakfast. It could not have been a better place to kick off my first trip to New Orleans. It has a classic NOLA front with the white pillars, porch, and large trees. Inside it's quite small with only counter style seating. (I'm not sure if there is anymore to it.) It is true to diner style eating. We were greeted by the friendly staff working the counters and were surrounded mostly by locals it seems and a few tourists like myself. It wasn't too busy since it was a mid morning weekday and found 2 spots right away. We ordered the pecan waffle, bacon, and chili omelette. Everything was so good but that waffle - omg I love that it's on the thinner side and you only get one. Most places serve such big portions. Another fun part was pouring the butter. I like to eat at old diners, so when I saw a picture of Camellia Grill I knew it would be right up my alley. I went there for breakfast one morning during my stay in New Orleans. You are seated at the long bar, where your order is taken and you can watch the food being cooked. The staff has a good banter with each other, so it's almost like you get breakfast and a show. I shared a breakfast po'boy with tater tots with my girlfriend. It's a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on the usual po'boy bread, with mayo. At first I thought it might be too bready. But it was perfect. The best breakfast sandwich I've ever tasted. Every ingredient is cooked perfectly, it's the right ratio of every ingredient, and the bread is very soft. I was wishing we didn't share it. The tater tots were good too, but this sandwich is what I will remember. I expect to eat delicious food any time I'm in New Orleans, but I was really surprised that they even make a breakfast sandwich better than what you get in other cities. Definitely greasy spoon diner with history, and you definitely don't want to watch how your food is cooked, but it was good and hit the spot. Lol. We ordered the Camellia's special sandwich, which i misread and thought it would be grilled (especially after seeing how the lunchmeat was handled with same gloves grabbing things from the counter and pressing buttons) and the Chef's Special omelet. They forgot the chili on the omelet so it ended up getting served on the side, but that worked out nicely. We really wanted to try the freezes but we needed to save room for dinner.
