Russell's has become a Lakeview institution. The decor remains firmly rooted in the 1980s. a time when I lived down the street and was happy to see a Camellia Grill inspired eatery open five doors down. (My old shotgun apartment was sold and torn down to make way for another high-rise Tower that was never built and now there's a big grassy field where my place used to be). My memory is that Russell started with more conventional diner menu, but his since specialized in a New Orleans way. A large variety of egg benedict options now headlines the menu. There are also some creative omelets, including one with fried oysters and remoulade sauce. I was going to get one of those but I kept seeing these delightful fluffy looking pancakes coming out of the kitchen. I opted instead for a short stack and a breakfast sandwich. The pancakes were perfect, tasting is good as they looked. The breakfast sandwich was on grilled bread like a panini with egg and bacon. Tasty. Hash browns or small nuggets of potato, not the best but preferable to the shredded potato hash browns at say Waffle House. Coffee with hot fresh and refilled frequently. Sitting at the bar, I was across from the fresh orange juice station. After staring at a pitcher of fresh weezed orange juice as I ate, I had to get some. That was great, and the generous portion wasn't served in a thimble-sized glass. The atmosphere is loud and convivial. On a Saturday morning is mostly locals. Special mention for the friendly service. The wait staff work together and seem like long timers. They recognize the number of customers as regulars as they came in. That's the kind of atmosphere you can't make up or buy from Sysco. This was my second time visiting Russell's, and it was just as fantastic as the last time! My boyfriend ordered an omelette that was stuffed with fried oysters and had a type of Cajun remoulade on top. I had barbecued shrimp and grits that were phenomenal. Servings are pretty large so I was able to take half of my breakfast home. We also ordered sweet potato beignets for the table. More comfortable if you like. We started out with the original Onion Mumm. Deep fried onion with lightly seasoned, served with rosette sauce. I assume that it closely resembles remoulade? Remoulade sauce is a mayonnaise-based condiment that originated in French cuisine and was later adapted in Louisiana. Please let me know of you think otherwise. We had to get it! It was delicious! Not as thick or heavily seasoned like the other ones. Not as intense. In my opinion. Next we got the bacon cheeseburger. All the dishes are freshly made from scratch. Tea is fresh brewed. It can be a bit crowded. However, if you time it right. Might experience some delicious food. If you wish to wet your whistle. They provide mixed drinks and few beer options. Drink responsibly. Few things I noticed about it. They are heavily crowded during lunch time but quickly disappears. It's a busy family friendly place where the staff work together to ensure customers are always attended to with a helpful smile. We ordered a breakfast platter, crab cakes, and bbq shrimp....this was at 9:30am. First this BBQ shrimp is not a lunch or dinner entree...it's really a shrimp and grits dish but it is so flavorful. It has 2 poached eggs smothered in the grits which takes this dish to another level with the grilled biscuits. The crab cakes were delicious and what sets this apart is the andouille that is inside the cake...which dips perfectly with the come back sauce. Chose scrambled eggs with cheese with the breakfast platter but what really made this dish good was the grilled ham steak that came with it. I had a Simno, which is a grilled chicken sandwich with pesto sauce and tomato on a panini. This chicken was seasoned. Not the generic seasoning but very well seasoned AND it was juicy. Now the pancakes cover a dinner plate. Yes, dinner plate not a saucer. Needless to say it was very filling. The atmosphere was relaxing to me. I ordered the sweet potato beignets for the first time and they were amazing. The beignets were a little different than your usual fried dough and powdered sugar. Instead they were fluffy, moist rounds with a good sweet potato flavor that sat in a buttery cinnamon sauce. 10/10 can't wait to order those again. For my entree, I ordered the shrimp omelet that came with a blueberry muffin and fruit. I love that their omelettes come with sides because that isn't very common at restaurants. Visited Russell's Marina Grill with a friend for Sunday brunch. We arrived around 10:45 a.m. and the restaurant was packed, with staff moving quickly about and loud with table conversations. We request indoor seating and it was about a 30 minute wait before we were seated. Our waitress was knowledgeable, friendly and accommodating. We ordered 2 coffees (Community brand coffee with chicory) and sweet potato beignets to start. Before our coffee arrived we were asked by a gentleman if we had been served and was about to take our drink order when our waitress arrived with our coffee, which ironically was served in mugs depicting "Big Al" who was the image and likeness of the gentleman who was inquiring about our drink order. After receiving our decadent sweet potato beignets, we placed our orders. I ordered the Sunday daily special which consisted of a 6 oz filet mignon topped with 2 large grilled shrimp, oven fried garlic potatoes wedges, creamed spinach, a sweet corn muffin, plus dessert of choice (lemon meringue). My friend ordered Eggs 9th, which consisted of 2 lump crab cakes topped with shrimp hollandaise sauce. She also ordered a pecan Belgian waffle. About that time the gentleman who inquired about our drink order passed and I asked was he Big Al? He vehemently replied "the one and only." Big Al informed us he had been working there for 40 years and loved his job! His t-shirt even had his picture on the back. It was clear to us Big Al was a respected fixture at the restaurant, even the table next to us had a child in a high chair and they called Big Al over to say hello and to encourage with the child. He was a joy to meet and with whom to interact. I received my gumbo first. It was a dark roux base with visible rice, okra, shrimp, sausage...simple delicious. My steak was cooked to perfection and flavorful topped with 2 large seasoned grilled shrimp. My creamed spinach rivaled the best I have had. My friend loved her crab cakes, which had lots of lump crab meat and loads of shrimp in the hollandaise sauce. I tried her pecan Belgian waffle, which was crispy, full of pecans and sweet without syrup. Overall my experience at Russel's Marina Grill was outstanding. It is a classic New Orleans eatery, where locals dine regularly and visitors are welcomed. I look forward to a return visit soon. read more

This was an amazing place to eat! I came here with my dad specifically to try "Ruby's Special" since I am a fan. I expected it to be good but it was perfect. The burger was cooked exactly how I asked, it was very juicy and full of flavor. The bun was fresh and warm, and complimented all the toppings very well. The fries were warm and crispy. I thought they were especially good with ketchup, but honestly they didn't even need it. I don't particularly love the flavor of cherries but the cherry milkshake was so good. It changed my mind on the flavor and I'll be certainly getting it again. My dad ordered the chicken fried steak Thursday special and really enjoyed it! The portions are large and the prices are fair. Our server was very helpful and kind. They made sure we had everything we needed very promptly. Our food was brought out very quickly. We tried the: *BBQ Shrimp & Grits ($17) - Juicy and succulent BBQ shrimp served over grits all topped with a creamy herby sauce. It comes with homemade biscuits and two perfectly poached eggs. It was filling and delicious! My only complaint is the number of shrimp in the dish. There was plenty of grits, but so little shrimp! I only got 4 shrimp, and to me, that's skimping for a $17 entrée. *Power House Breakfast Bowl ($14) - Comes with a bed of fresh spinach, masterfully seasoned brown rice, avocado, blueberries, a fried egg with runny yolk, and a fantastic grilled chicken. The portion for this dish is a little small in my opinion, and this time, they forgot to put the quinoa in. Maybe it was an off day? Delish, but the portion size and the the missing quinoa bring my review down a star here. *Side Dish of Mac and Cheese side ($4?) - A sharp flavorful cheddar is used to bring some flavor to the macaroni. The portion was on the smaller side for this one, but it's a side dish, so this didn't bother me much. Over all, all of the food tasted fantastic! The complaint comes from the skimping. However, if you already eat smaller portions, this place would be perfect for you! One thing to note, be warned, they're only open for breakfast and lunch every day and close at 3pm. OK, I am totally addicted! Just what I need, another food addiction... Met a friend on a Sunday around 9:45A at the very very busy Russell's. Parking was a challenge but not impossible, and there were even a few empty tables inside. (WHAT?!) Our server, Rachel R., was super friendly, though I have to admit it was hard to understand her because she talks fast and it was very loud inside. Tables are close together, so close that share our review on the food with the table next to us before they made their choices (at their request, of course). In spite of the crowd, service was quick and there was teamwork in ordering and delivery of food. I was taken by the picture of the biscuits with homemade sausage gravy, and it didn't disappoint. I also could not pass on the Andouille Sage Gritcakes with a tantalizing herb & beer reduction sauce. (I couldn't taste the beer, and there was no horseradish in it. Armed with this knowledge, they ordered these at the table next to us.) I'm not a huge grit fan but I had to try them and I made a point to save one for the husband. ORDER THEM! This review is for the two separate times i've been to Russell's Marina Grill. Service: The customer service is amazing. I had different waitresses each time and both of them were so kind and welcoming. They made great suggestions and made me feel like they wanted me to have the best meal of my life. They also took time to get to know me by asking about where i'm from, what I do, etc. I felt extremely at home and would come here for the service alone. The atmosphere is extremely welcoming. Upon walking in, the hostess instantly greets you with a big smile. She treats everyone like they just came home after being gone for a while. The restaurant is located by a quieter street and is conducive to having conversations with your friends. Food: The food is amazing, it's almost unbelievable that this place exists. I ordered the Ruby's Special and Eggs Benedict the first time; ordered the Eggs Benedict the second time. Both times, the Eggs Benedict did NOT disappoint. The eggs were cooked perfectly with an english muffin that had the ideal crispyness to it. The Ruby's Special is a burger with fries and a cherry vanilla shake. I asked for the burger to be as rare as possible; most places will cook it medium rare. However, they cooked my burger to the most perfect level of being as rare as possible.
