Been a fan of The Canopy for many years, but my last two visits have been sub-par. REALLY dislike the current rolls...they don't have a good mouth feel and are really dry and even crumbly...I noted that when I cut my sandwich in two after arriving home that the bun literally fell apart into crumbs. The fries were starchy, not sweet like usual, as if they hadn't been soaked long enough. I go out of my way to come there, occasionally even driving from Mt. Airy specifically for a visit, but unless the bread quality changes, that may no longer be the case. read more

The chicken halves have dry breast meat and / or undercooked thigh meat. So consistently that I just order the leg quarters when I go there - which is no longer. I ordered the chicken leg quarter, which they call a leg and thigh. The person behind the counter knew what I meant when I asked for a chicken leg quarter, but asked me, "breast and wing, or leg and thigh?" I repeated, the leg quarter, and he asked me again, looking me straight in the eye, "breast and wing, or leg and thigh?" I thought I was at Starbucks and the barista was trying to train me to order the drink in the correct way. I refused to say "leg and thigh," because the creep clearly knew what I meant. GROSS. I don't know how they do ribs around here, but dang these are gross. I mean stale and cold and covered in a funky tasting sauce. Large Mid-rare pit beef with extra horseradish is as good as any beef in town! Possibly the perfect balance between meat and more meat.

Love this place! The beef is really smoky and really tender. The ribs are fall-off-the-bone tender with great seasoning and flavour, and I also like the sauce - it's nothing out of this world but for me it compliments the meat flavours well. Another personal favourite are the been tips in sauce - soooo good. Sides are nothing special but are fine - the reason to come here is for the meat, and it is well worth it. I love canopy! I go pretty often and usually order wings and ribs. Both of which are amazing. I've also tried their pit beef which was great and cooked to perfection. The staff are very friendly and rather attractive. The lines aren't very long most if the time and tend to move fast. The only thing wrong with canopy is the crab soup. I may just me picky but I don't like shells in my soup also it has a taste like no other crab soup I've had and not in a good way. Was craving a McRib and just so happened The Canopy was right next door to McDonald's. The BBQ pulled pork sandwich was mushy...very disappointing. When you walk into the restaurant, all of the meet is on the griddle and they look unbelievable. They take the time perfectly season and cook each piece. I was surprised that there were no seats in the restaurant and they deliver. The deli pickles are delicious, but the chicken wings lacked flavor and were soggy...they wrapped them in wax paper instead of foil. read more

It was Sunday and on my way home to Pennsy. My favorite pit beef joint Kirkwood was closed :-( So I drove a little further down the road to Ellicott City to try The Canopy. This place is a pretty revolting BBQ joint, which you'd think would lend itself towards decent prices to make up for things, but quite the contrary. They tremendously overcharge for their overcooked, tasteless crap. I got a turkey sandwich, ran me about $8, and I get a chewy, dry and bland roll with really bad deli style turkey. I can make better from grocery store fare for a fraction of the price. As if that wasn't enough, I had a dead mosquito in the turkey sandwich (I know, it sounds cliche, but I guess that's what you get with a place like this). The french fries were acceptable, but they are right next door to a McDonalds, and McD's fries taste better for cheaper. When the bottom of the barrel shows you up, you've got a problem with your food. Unprofessional, disorganized, slow service, charging way too much for boring food. Would not recommend. read more

I would have upgraded this to four stars- but I can't say I would eat this regularly. The coleslaw is my favorite part about it-amazing amounts of coleslaw for a great price. The BBQ sandwich is pretty good too, but it lacks consistency. The staff were very nice and the turn around time for the food was incredibly short. I won't go back. I went in after my son's high school football game and ordered 100 wings for him, the family & some friends. I got an immediate attitude from the staff: a lot of huffing and puffing about the order. I was then told they didn't have 100 wings, and asked if I'd settle for a lesser amount. I did, thinking that's all they had. While I was waiting for my wings, another guy came in and ordered a dozen wings. THEY FILLED HIS ORDER! So I asked how they could fill an order for a dozen wings when they just told me they didn't have enough to fill my order. The reply (with attitude) was that they didn't see the point in filling my order for an odd amount. I didn't want something like 92 wings, did I? I replied, well, yes. I actually wanted 100. So I expected you to get as close to that as you could with what you had. We went back & forth a couple of times, but they STILL didn't get it. I paid and left, but haven't been back since. Their loss. Until then, we'd order that much or more about 2-3 times a month. Now I wouldn't buy a pack of ketchup from them. This was a while back, but I'm making it my first yelp review because the rude, horrible service still sticks in my mind. read more

There's no place to sit down, but that's no real quibble. The pit beef and turkey are simply excellent. Remember folks- this is Maryland, not Texas. Lower your expectations a bit. We do crab cakes, not pulled pork. The guys working are always very friendly, you watch them make your sandwich, and the Tiger sauce is to die for. Perfectly nippy in temperature with great flavor. Prices aren't low, but they're not exorbitant either. With no other barbecue place around, they could be a lot worse, but you can tell they make an honest effort to give you good food, service and prices. read more

I've tried to give this place another chance. Only pit-beef spot in the Ellicott City area to choose from, close to where I work. Well....I'm disappointed again. Dry pit-beef. I asked for extra BBQ every time and they never give it. FYI. Just purchased a party platter that was supposed to be sized for 9 people, at $7.50/person, and thought folks might be interested in what that equates to, since we were shocked. Then you can decide where to spend your money. We got 9 kaiser rolls, 8 rolled up slices of turkey lunchmeat, 10 slices of ham, 10 slices of roast beef, 10 slices of yellow American cheese, 2 entire onions (sliced thin), a small (~4 Tbs each) container of mayo, horseradish, tiger sauce and yellow mustard, 1/2 c of BBQ sauce, 1 qt of decent coleslaw and 1 qt of the most taste-free potato salad ever. So a "9-person platter" makes exactly 9 skimpy sandwiches and almost 1/4c of each salad per person (no seconds anybody!), for $70. It doesn't make much of a party, what with going hungry and feeling cheated. We got more condiments than meat. I asked our guests to guess how many servings were on the cute little doll house-sized platter, and they guessed 4-6. My two BILs could've eaten the whole thing, just them. We made an unscheduled stop at the deli at Giant across the street so we'd actually have enough food for our 9 full sized adults. read more

The chicken wasn't anything spectacular, but who goes to a pit BEEF joint for chicken anyway ? Another tasty item on the menu are the beef tips marinated in Au Jus . There was a time when this place was great for pit beef, even as little as a year ago. Lately they have gone way, way down in terms of quality and care put into the food. The pit beef sandwich I recently ordered was awful. The bun had MOLD on the bottom of it. MOLD! It was so disgusting. Most of the toppings I had ordered (hot BBQ, onions, horseradish) for it didn't totally get on the sandwich, and the one that actually got onto the sandwich (onions) were not fresh in the least. They looked like they had been sitting uncovered all day. They completely forgot the horseradish and BBQ sauce. The beef itself looked like it wasn't cooked medium like I had asked, but well. Since I had brought the food home, I didn't feel like heading back out to get a refund. Instead I tossed it, and decided to never give them the business again. It was not busy, either. There was one other person in the place who had come in while I was waiting for my food. Other times in the past few months, I've ended up getting subpar food, but this was the absolute worst. The staff clearly cares more about watching sports on the dumb TV recently installed and horsing around rather than make sure the food they serve is safe and made properly. Don't bother going here these days unless you want rotten food. Another thing I should add is that staff turnover there has been really heavy, which was not the case before. We used Canopy for catering a party at our house and I couldn't recommend enough! We ordered for 65 people and probably could have fed 100. The ribs were very tasty and everyone was raving about the potato salad. We got three trays full of pit beef, ham and turkey and it was all fabulous. I would highly recommend for lunch, dinner or catering!!! read more

they finally accept credit cards! one of my pet peeves and biggest deterrent for not stopping by the open pit was that they were cash only. i didnt understand it. they are located on one of howard county's major arteries, at a major intersection, juxtaposed between local restaurants and major food chains (all of whom accept credit cards), and they were cash only. the young high school kids, who run the take out, would be quick to point out they have an atm machine in the corner. thanks kids, i'll pay an additional $2 bank fee to place an order where the owner is more concerned with cheating on his taxes. the food - i dont know why, but chances are the meat in your sandwhich will be dry. but let me venture a guess. could it be, its not busy enough to throw halves of carcusses to sit on the flame all day? or could it be, a lack of adult supervision to ensure quality in product and service? their sides are plain and unimaginative. they offer instant mash potato, boardwalk fries, or baked potato. the one thing i have to order on a menu when i see it is mac and cheese. but i wont make that mistake twice at the canopy unless im in the mood for a bland, sticky, thicker than peanut butter glob. im glad they finally accept credit cards but i fear they waited too long. the are has grown exponentially, and they have given ample time to their new competitors to steal their business. its time to move on... read more

Best place for pit beef and boardwalk fries. The fries are my favorite, made to perfection soft while crispy on the outside.

The beef is always BURNT to a crisp on the outside. It's almost inedible. The fries are too greasy and always burnt as well. They have a bunch of GED High school drop out kids in there with an attitude. They don't know how to use the till, and don't know simple math. They over charged me on April 10th and got smart with me when I noticed. I went home and double checked. I ordered a small fry and a large beef. They charged me for a large fry and a large beef. I knew something was up with these con artist's. It's OK, let them have the extra 60 cents. They need it more than I do obviously. What they do is they over charge customers by 25 -75 cents thinking the customer wont notice, and over the course of a shift, it adds up to a nice tip. I had the last laugh. The next day I had myself a great meal for delivery from the canopy for a whopping 68 dollars. :) Moral of the story...if you think you're slick, the customer is usually more slick. read more

Went there based on a review that the pork bbq kept bringing some guy back. I usually get pit beef when I've been to the Canopy in Glen Burnie. Well there were a few disappointments but 3 definite pluses. Disappointment 1. Got to the place to find out there is no where to sit. Disappointment 2. They said there were picnic tables in the back, but one was almost in the neighbors yard and the other was up against the back of the building up against a used parts rack. Disappointment 3. I was expecting pulled pork, but got typical pork cooked in bbq. A big sloppy mess that was near impossible to eat. Not my favorite. Plus 1. The employees were friendly and thanked us for coming. Plus 2. The pit beef that my girl friend ordered was great very flavorful and good portion. Should have stuck with the pit beef. Plus 3. The fries were great! Exactly what you want in a fry. Ordered well done and they came out perfect. I love their fries! All in all if you live close enough, (I don't it was 20 miles away) The pit beef and fries are straight up good food, not tricks. Just beef on a bun and potatoes cooked in oil. Just the way it should be... I dress it the way I want it, thanks. read more
