My weekly Petaluma lunch was from The Canton. My friends asked me to look at the menu for another Chinese restaurant, but they were closed this week. I think they ordered something for me that was off menu. I had broccoli, carrots and tofu with fried rice. It was all delicious with just the right amount of spiciness. I also got a small soup and an eggroll. The eggroll had nice flavor and wasn't to greasy. I thought it could have had a bit more filling inside. It seamed a little empty to me. I have not tried the cup of soup yet. I'm looking forward to eating here again. read more

When you have only 2 tables and one person waiting for takeout and you get sent away because they are too busy! The food here is awesome but we are repeatedly turned away! Time to find a new favorite. read more

Really, really good food. Stopped there a couple of times while in the area. Was impressed each time with the quality and flavor of this well prepared food. Especially enjoyed the Hong Kong style Chow Mein and I honestly believe their Wonton Soup was the best I've ever had. Wonderful flavor! read more

I like Canton quite a lot. They have very nice items for vegetarians, good prices, no canned foods and are kind people who care about their food. It's a simple low budget spot so you really get a nice value for your dollars. I love the veggie fried rice full of fresh veg egg or no egg it's nice. Lots of fu appetizers, veggie and meat, me of my hubbys two favorite mu shu dishes. Nice lunch specials. The room is simple but nice, it's often quiet. Don't let that fool you they have non stop take out pumping out if here. I'm not sure why more folks don't dine in, but I myself is a take outer so there ya go. Do what the locals do, get a big order of things you love for take out and eat a few meals! read more

Visited the bro-in-law, hunger pangs set in for all of us, not enough food in the house. So here I go and opened the phone book up and looked around. I decide to order delivery from this place because another Chinese place ("China something" I forget the name) my bro likes didn't answer their phone (and I called like 3 times, what losers). Here's what we had: * Shrimp chow mein - not bad, loved that they didn't use a lot of filler veggies...and made sure I told them NO bean sprouts cuz I can't stand bean sprouts in my chow mein, it's just wrong. * Tomato beef chow fun - love that it came with extra gravy, just the right amount of sweetness to tartness. * Sauteed beef - I ordered this with no veggies because I wanted a serious ALL MEAT dish, no other filler stuff...was really tender with just the right amount of gravy. Good thing I got 2 orders of this. * Fried wonton with crab and cheese filling - Where was the imitation crab?! It was all cream cheese and no seasoning - very bland. * Walnut prawns - pretty good, a bit too much on the mayonnaise sauce but still loved it. * Sesame chicken - eh...I think they fried the chicken too long because it was dry and the pieces were cut a bit too small for me...sauce was sweet but not icky sweet. Overall pretty all right Chinese food to stuff your face and make the hunger pangs go away. read more

This is probably my favorite Chinese restaurant here in Petaluma. Their prices are good and the food is absolutely TASTY. I tend to do take-outs since I live close by, but it seems really peaceful in there. Friendly staff too. I ordered beef and broccoli, egg foo young (sp?), curry chicken, and another dish... they are nothing but AMAZING. So yummy. Hubby and I were new residents of Petaluma and wondered if any of the Chinese restaurants served dim sum. We tried The Canton and it is not SF Chinatown so dim sum choices are limited but tasty. We returned four other times to The Canton in less than a month so one can say we enjoyed the food. Family run restaurant as many Chinese restaurants are and service can be slow at busy times. Take-out orders are popular so If you are not in a rush, the food is worth the wait. Many dishes are delicious. read more

Reasonably priced food with large portions! I love this place, I will drive from Marin to Petaluma just to get GREAT chinese food! The customer service is on point, always refilling our water.. Easily the best Chinese food in town! I've tried most of them and none can compare. I'm particular about my fried rice, chow mein, and potstickers. The Cantons did not disappoint. The Szechuan beef and Kung pao chicken is also really yummy. I've liked everything I've tried. read more

While I love Yang Sink in SF and really enjoy Harmony in Mill Valley, if you need a dim sum fix in Petaluma, this is your place. No carts, but great table service and great dumplings. Would love to see some local ingredients on the menu! read more

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! The Canton is far and away the best Chinese restaurant in California. It has everything going for it: ample parking, long business hours, cleanliness, friendly staff and spacious seating. But the star is the cuisine. The food is always fresh and freshly prepared to order. Your Sweet and Sour will never be heavy with grease and sauce. My favorites: Wor Wanton Soup and MuShu. Either will make a full meal, but if you order BOTH, your left-overs will still be better the next day than 90% of the Chinese Restaurants out there! I moved away five years ago and now only rarely have the opportunity to dine there, but every time it is exactly the same as the first time: perfect! Even if you are not a big fan of Chinese food, you will enjoy the experience of dining at The Canton. read more

Very fresh and made to order Chinese food. Not oily or over sauced. The food is never soggy when we order from Canton. The pork buns are amazing and my favorite is always the moo shoo. The only "criticism" is the atmosphere is average. I don't think I heard any music, but they may appeal to others. read more

I've been going here for quite a few years and it's always been great! The lemon chicken, walnut prawns, any chow mein...everything is excellent. I usually leave here with several pounds of food as it's always a welcome treat when we open the fridge at home. To Ni V. below...you belong in a padded cell if you expect to walk into any establishment on Christmas Eve with only 15 minutes left until closing time and expect be served. I've been coming to The Canton since I was a child and it truly is such a special place serving the best Chinese cuisine. Each time I visit, the food is just as delicious as it was when I was 8 years old. The absolute best part is their dim sum! The sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf, the shrimp dumplings, the stuffed tofu, the BBQ buns...the list goes on and on! I notice that most people who go there tend to order off the regular menu and not the dim sum, most likely because they aren't aware of it or prefer to get what they are used to, but please try dim sum for lunch and you will be delighted, it's such a hidden gem. I also love their main dishes too, of course, the mongolian beef and fried rice being my favorites. I've eaten at some high-end amazing Chinese and dim sum restaurants in the Bay Area, but The Canton should be right there on the list with the best of them. Oh and it's also very clean and the woman who owns the restaurant and her daughters are such lovely people. I will always grab food from here whenever I'm in Petaluma. read more

Tried Canton for the first time the other day. I am a big fan of another Chinese place so it didn't ever occur to me to give Canton a try. I am happy that I did. I enjoyed the quiet atmosphere and very attentive service. We tried the won ton soup, pot stickers and the krispy Szechuan beef. The won ton had great flavor and a good amount of both won ton and fresh veggies. We even had enough for a small cup with leftovers for lunch the next day. The Szechuan beef was very krispy and a great balance of sweet and spicy. I would say that I wasn't a huge fan of the dipping sauce they serve with the pot stickers as it was a little too sweet for me. I Think a little chili oil and rice vinegar could have helped. But there are no condiments on the tables. Overall I enjoyed the food. Different experience from our regular joint as there was no one around yelling at the rest of the waitstaff. I do plan on returning to try the royal spice chicken drumettes. I saw an order go by and they looked good. read more

Was looking for some good local Chinese and chose the Canton because of the glowing reviews. The vegetable chow mein was very good and not dry like some others I've experienced! I also got the spring rolls that come with 4 to an order and with great sauce on the side. Pick up was super easy and quick. And you can't beat those prices for dinner. I've sort of "rediscovered" this place. I ate here a few times and thoroughly enjoyed it every time but because Lily Kai opened shop so close to my workplace, I switched gears. Truth being, Canton is much more authentic and truly aims to please. I have yet to understand why they are not packed wall-to-wall most days. The service could be more efficient but they are friendly and attentive overall. The truly remarkable part of it all is that my vegan partner and I can now have pretty darn good dim sum in Sonoma County. Grant it, this means driving all the way from the Russian River area to Petaluma but it beats driving to SF when we are desperate for chili sauce vehicles. Best of all, you eat and eat and the bill stays low. Try doing that at Yank Sing in SF! Well, they are next to godliness but The Canton will do! I'm not vegan but finding good Chinese food that suits us both is rather difficult-- especially on this side of the Bay. They will essentially accommodate any diet restrictions and can even make a fabulous vegan hot-sour soup. Make sure to specify what you don't want in the dishes and don't simply say, "make it vegan" or "make it vegetarian"; this can really get you into trouble when the wait staff hardly speaks English. High on my recommendation list is the Mongolian beef and just about anything on the Dim Sum menu-- including the onion pancakes, vegetable pot stickers, lotus seed buns, BBQ pork buns, and the hot-sour soup. Get there early because they will run out of some things rather quickly. read more

Hands down the BEST in Sonoma County. I've tried more Chinese places than I can count. Even if I'm extremely ill I will drive down from Rohnert Park to pick up some soup. Their food is unmatched. I read other reviews about this place and people said the Mongolian Beef was good so I ordered it. It seems all the Chinese restaurants in Marin (where I live) use hoisin sauce to make this dish really sweet, but The Canton did it right - savory and slightly spicy. The dim sum was good too - I especially enjoyed the sticky rice + chicken wrapped in lotus leaf and the tarot cake. I'll definitely eat here again. read more

In the continual pursuit of good chinese food I finally found myself at the door step of The Canton restaurant. Having tried a few places in Petaluma my wife and I just couldn't find a Chinese food place we liked. Certain ones were over priced others just didn't delivery on flavor. Well that all changed when we came to The Canton. We've been here a few times both for the lunch special. It is a great way to get a nice portion at a great price. Bonus is that they also offer dim sum during the lunch special. I've tried the shrimp dumplings, the crab stars, and the steamed pork buns. All were very good, a nice way to supplement the lunch special and not have to pay to much extra for another entree or a full size app. This is a nice little find, good food, good prices and excellent service. This is definitely my go to Chinese food joint. read more

My wife and I eat here regularly. One of the things we love is that they use fresh veggies and cook them well. They don't use MSG or artificial colors- the sweet and sour is a light orange instead of that red color. The service is fast and friendly. Lily Kai is pretty good, but we think this is much better. A girlfriend of mine and I frequently meet at Conton with our toddlers for lunch. They're great with the kids--even returned a sippy cup to me that I had left during a previous visit. This is some of the best Chinese food I've ever had... non-greasy and always fresh. Their wor wonton soup is packed with veggies, shrimp, and wontons. The orange chicken is loaded with flavor without being too sweet, and the combination chow mein is awesome too. I wish they had a more extensive dim sum menu but what they do have is pretty good. Service is somewhat slow because they take their time with each dish and bring dishes out one by one, plus I always only see one waitress in the restaurant for all tables. She makes an effort to remember who you are and makes conversation with you. All in all this has become my go to place for Chinese! read more
