We have not been here for several years. My wife and I decided on 2 cups of fish chowder along with Peter's platter to share. The only reason for the two stars was the fish chowder, which was truly excellent. However, the Peters platter was a huge disappointment and not even one star for $46. The fried clams were huge and way too chewy. The scallops tasted old and not good. The bread coating on all of it way too heavy, and difficult to remove, calamari rings, shrimp and fish meh for that reason. Needless to say we won't be back. That is all. read more

Stopped here on a friend's recommendation. Got the fried scallops with fries and cole slaw. Some of the best and freshest food I have ever had! The tartar sauce def was the best I have ever had. Scallops are pricey, as everywhere, but there were a ton and they were so light. I can tell this place uses good and fresh oil. The server was also helpful in getting me the smallest size container to take the leftover scallops to go, to the airport! I will def make this a tradition every time I'm in New England. read more

Family friends suggested trying The Causeway as they had heard it was good and they've noticed when driving by that it always appears busy. The dining area is on the smaller side, but there's really no indoor waiting area so we were standing over everyone since it was rainy and raw outside, somewhat uncomfortably watching the other guests eating. It was entertaining seeing huge portions, especially fried seafood plates, being produced by the kitchen and hauled to tables or the small bar by the servers. We didn't realize it's a BYOB place but we're not drinkers so that was a moot point. We waited about 20 minutes to be seated. My wife ordered a cup of clam chowder which she said tasted perfect, as you would expect clam chowder to taste. She also order the seafood Florentine which she felt like was not the best choice because the layered bowl the bottom layer of fish was luke warm. And so she had wished she had ordered the coconut rum haddock. I had heard the chicken parm was huge and was tempted but instead ordered mozzarella sticks so I could try their marinara sauce but ordered chicken piccata instead. There must have been a whole box of penne in my huge bowl and it was piping hot the whole time I tried to make a dent in it. I couldn't finish it which is not typical for me. We also shared a bottle of sparkling water and a large Greek salad. Everything was huge and we took home leftovers. Overall it was really good and we'll come back to try the other dishes that we had heard about, perhaps when the weather is nice. read more

While I've been impressed in the past, I ordered a lobster roll on Friday for take out and there was a LARGE AND LONG HAIR in it. Nothing like ruining something you looked forward to and at $40 without tax too. I try to be fair in life and called the Causeway the next morning. Every time I call at night it's so busy that I knew it would be the wrong time to call and report the hair. Upon calling the next day the feeling was: I was the bad guy vs the unlucky customer. I was calm, kind, etc and the guy who answered when I asked to speak with a manager was clearly very defensive. He never apologized until he said, "did you want to come pick up another lobster roll?" (No way could I ever) and that's when I added, "I think an apology is in order." He added that he'd have the owners call me. They did not. A credit of $40&tax is in order. BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, have your staff tie back their hair. This hasn't happened to me yet in Gloucester and obviously from this review, it's not been a positive experience. It doesn't need to happen again. Being too busy to follow up doesn't bode well for customer service. read more

This used to be our favorite restaurant when we came up to Rockport. But the portions have shrunk dramatically and the prices have gone up astronomically. There used to be a line out the door to get into the place and now it is half empty. We never minded the lack of atmosphere because the food was so good and there was so much of it. Who knew it'd be hard to find lobster on a hot Sunday on the coast? I actually didn't think the Causeway featured boiled lobster but after several places were either out or never answered their phones, I gave them a call and was delighted when they had some left. We actually lucked out as we ordered 2 of the twin lobster specials and we were called back only to learn they had just 3 lobsters left and offered us a good price for all three. Not going to lie - finding parking was pretty brutal for my partner. They had open spots but they were for the ice cream store only. I think he had to walk a little bit in order to pick up our massive food order but he was a trooper and did it! My mother is in late stages of cancer and loves the Causeway. The owners have always been so good to her and she used to get their haddock chowder weekly. She wanted a boiled lobster meal and I was so glad a place she loved was able to make that happen. I don't think we'll order boiled lobsters again - not that they weren't good because they were awesome but wow, what a job cracking those suckers open. Give me a lobster roll where it's already done any day. We also ordered a large haddock chowder (always served in two cups) and the haddock was amazing, as usual. I wasn't a fan of the mashed potatoes (garlic!) and asparagus (eep) but my aunt and partner wolfed it down. We also got a scallop dinner for my aunt and she loved it. She reported the scallops were the best she's had since being back from Florida. We really demolished that food and the price was more than right for the amount and quality. Definitely call them and check if they have lobster because I don't think it's always available but it was really nice quality and size. read more

Food: Shrimp and Lobster Scampi; Steamers; Fish and Chips; Lemon Pepper Salmon; Salad with Swordfish. Outstanding from start to finish. My fish and chips surpassed anything I ever had in the US and UK. Each dish was delicious and perfectly done. Server was a chip off the old block down home Gloucester woman. Great job amidst the chock full room. The entire staff works their buns off. This place is one of a kind. Don't live in Ma. but will always return if in area. In fact, will probably go back tomorrow, last day in town. Causeway has my highest recommendation. (As my adult kids say I do have a tendency to repeat myself-see below) read more

I love this gem so much! I'm not from the area originally, so I love bringing my out-of-town visitors here. I've only ever ordered the prime rib or the clam chowder, but that's all I ever really want when I'm here. They're both SO DELICIOUS. The food here is also very reasonably priced, and the portions are quite generous. Also, the clientele is diverse, so that's how I knew it was a good place when I first dined here. Every guest who I've brought here has loved it. From the seafood to the Italian dishes, you can't go wrong here. This place is always busy, too. In the hour that we dined in, the amount of people who came in for take-out orders was insane. The dine-in tables have a quick turnover rate, too. A road trip in December in New England is a risky thing. Not only do you have weather to contend with (hello cold air and blustery wind!), but some places, particularly by the ocean, may be closed for the season. That The Causeway Restaurant is thankfully not! They are open year round, although they were considering closing for New Year's when I called to check on their status. The Causeway Restaurant is a casual spot located along the road with a few slots out front for parking. They share a single story building with the Gloucester Charter Connection - whose status is in question since I spied a "For Rent" sign in their window... The building is set one step up from the parking lot with a covered entrance. It isn't a large space, so it felt a bit cramped as the lunch crowd set in. In addition to the table seating, there was a bar with a tv, and a white board listing their $5 desserts and a number of savory options. The four of us opted to share two bowls of clam chowder $6/$8, the fried Peter Platter $28 (haddock, shrimp, scallops, calamari & clams), and the baked Causeway Combo $16 (baked scallops, shrimp, and haddock casserole), and had enough left over to have fed a fifth. The bread and butter arrived cold, but soft and good for sopping up the chowder. Speaking of which, the bowl came with chowder filled to the brim - plenty for 2, might have been fine for 3 since it was meant as an appetizer. The chowder was well packed with chunks but served only warm, and on the bland side. I added some pepper to pep it up - and that says a lot. The Causeway Combo was a bit sad with overcooked asparagus and gummy skin on mashed potato. The casserole itself was overbaked, and all the flavor was in the seasoned crumb topping. The star of our luncheon was the Peter Platter. The fried seafood was heaped high on top of a obscured bed of chilled cole slaw and french fries. The fry job on the sea creatures were fine. The clams full bellied, the seafood moist and tender. The staff was a bit harried, yet responsive when I asked for a new spoon since mine had some substance stuck to it. read more

I went there for years and the last time was the last time. I ordered Lobster Pie, it smelled and tasted like a casserole dish full of Ammonia. If you know anything about seafood and I am sure the people at the Causeway do, Ammonia seafood is seafood gone bad,, really bad. I can't go there again, that's just too big of a screw up. You give me french fries when I wanted onion rings, I can overlook that, you over cook my steak a bit, I can overlook that, but you give me Rancid Lobster, sorry dude, you couldn't tell it was garbage when you were cooking it, get your sinuses checked and start dating your catch. read more

Searched all day to find the best clam chowder shack. Locals concurred this was the place. And we agree! There's a very small private lot and the place was packed! We got the last few seats at the bar but the service was quick. Portions here are huge!! There's a bunch of tvs to watch all the games. Or there's newspapers at the bar. Not a lot of room for privacy. Just enough rooms between tables to walk on by. Average pricing. We were in and out in a reasonable amount of time. We enjoyed the atmosphere. We were visiting from out of town and wanted fresh seafood at a local hideaway. We ordered twin lobster tails, which came with fries and asparagus. Everything was delicious! The ambiance is simple, rustic - but again, we just came for the food. Parking is very limited - and we were grateful to not be towed as we parked behind the ice cream joint (which was next door and they had a lot of signs warning it was only for their customers). The food is amazing here - fresh seafood and incredible portions sizes (the fried shrimp meal is out of this world!), but the staff were not friendly at all and frankly, rude. The restaurant itself gets packed - no elbow room and very unsafe quarters considering hot plates of food and drink are being carried left and right. I came for lunch with my small child (8 month) and four other family members and not a single staff member assisted my family with our stroller and didn't ask to give us a high chair or seat us in an area where we may have had a bit more space. It felt like the restaurant cares more about seating people quickly and making money than caring about the guest experience. Would not recommend this place for any families with small children under 4. The waitress also seemed to have a bad attitude towards anyone with children and it made our entire meal feel quite tense. read more

SO GOOD. Went here on my visit to Boston/Hamilton with a group of friends. Living in NYC, I always have a hard time finding a legit seafood place, but obviously, that's not a problem in Boston. I'm not a big seafood person, but I couldn't stop eating at this place. My friends and I ordered the Peter's Platter (fried shrimps, calamari, clams, scallops, all different kinds plus fries), mussels in white wine (my favorite), seafood marinara linguini (mussels, scallops, clams, calamari), caesar salad with steak tips (wish every salad can be like this). They were all amazing and the portions were really big. Our group had 7 people and we shared 5 dishes but we still couldn't finish it. One bad thing is, it gets really crowded, especially because the restaurant is pretty small. My friends and I went for Saturday lunch around 12:30, and our wait was about 45 minutes for a group of 7. A group of us (7) stopped in yesterday evening for dinner. It was busy, but nothing remotely close to what it's like during the summer season. We explained to our server that if possible we could have an accessible table due to one of our party having some trouble with walking. No problem . They were kind enough to clean and put 2 tables together in the center of the room which ended up being perfect. She took our beverage order - they serve soft drinks, coffee and tea. But you can also bring in wine or beer if desired. It was pretty quick when she returned with our drinks. Then came the time to order food. Obviously they specialize in seafood.. there were some wonderful specials on the daily board. Due to my food allergy I wasn't ordering any and chose eggplant parmesan which was a special on the board. Diners aside of me ordered coconut haddock and another fish and chips. The portions are still enormous like they've always been... My eggplant arrived and was served in a huge bowl with pasta and sauce... I'm not trying to upset anyone who would find this something great. But for me it was so huge that I found it to be a big turn off.. plus with all that the actual dish itself was mushy and tasteless. I barely ate 1/8 of it's contents. Those who ordered seafood raved about their meals. I myself should have stuck to my plan which was a salad. some I saw go by looked really good Oh well... They would not do separate checks but what out nice server did do was to add up separate totals and separate payments on one bill. Definitely fair enough. It has been some time since Id been to this venue.. and as I wrote if you eat seafood, the portions for the price probably can't be beat. It's no frills, loud, crowded very busy. My family and I did takeout here and were super excited to try it after hearing all the reviews and the fact that it took us a while to get through on the phone to order~ they were so busy! Overall though we were pretty underwhelmed. We ordered calamari to share and it was so flavorless! The texture and the batter weren't good either. So it wasn't a great start but we were hopeful for our main dishes. I ordered the fish and chips and wasn't impressed. Part of it was probably because I didn't eat it right away so it wasn't as fresh, but still, I've definitely had better before. My parents didn't have much to say about their main dishes either. We were disappointed but glad to have at least tried it and see what the hype was about. Probably won't be going back. read more

If you are looking for AMBIANCE this is not the Seafood (& more) place for you! Don't run away yet... IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR HUGE PORTIONS OF SEAFOOD , or anything on the menu,that will SURPASS your taste buds expectations, this IS DEFINITELY the place for you! My personal favorite is their thick & creamy clam chowder - it may be the best I've ever had and I've had a lot! I also love their huge Caesar salad & add in an appetizer like scallops wrapped in bacon. Pick your favorite anything to add-in! Wonderful! Warning : IF you choose EAT-IN, get there BEFORE you actually want/need to eat that is imperative! Can't express enough. It's crowded outside w/people waiting to get in all the time as it's worth the wait! Otherwise, you can elect to do TAKE OUT - the portions and quality are so good either way! Word of caution for people w/certain expectations of FRIED FOOD staying crunchy/crispy on you ride home or to _____? I suggest right down the street at Stage Fort Park or the Boulevard (pre-Covid-19), but beware of SEAGULLS EATING OFF YOUR PLATE B4 you get a bite! ;) Styrofoam or other containers keep the items warm/hot, but they also cause condensation and moisture to your order. They will be "soggy" if you are not eating right away. Plan to consume quickly or throw it in an oven for a few minutes to crisp it up again. It's the way it is - things get cold & hard or soft & soggy if fried from anywhere on the ride home if not close by. Each and every time someone asks where the best seafood in Gloucester is, I recommend "The Causeway" even though it definitely depends on whether they actually WANT THE FOOD or food AND ambiance. This is a place that's for the FOOD for a passerby; locals, people from "out of town", you know, the tourists, and just about anyone who likes to eat BIG! It's not roughing it ,but it's a restaurant that's clean w/tables and chairs nothing more or less. You want an ocean view or "fine dining experience", this place is not for you. I've NOT MET ANYONE from near or far that has discovered this Gem and not raved about the food! That includes both near and far!
