Low ceilings, stone walls, candlelight, and that unmistakable old-world wine cellar smell. I usually come here when I want a longer dinner, the kind where you order a bottle and don't rush. The wine list is deep and well curated, and the servers actually know how to guide you without upselling. The bread service alone tells you this place hasn't changed for trends it's warm, crusty, and meant to be eaten slowly with butter and wine. Food-wise, it's classic and comforting. The escargot is always a must, and their entrées are rich in that traditional French way not trying to be modern, just done right. This is not small plates or quick bites; this is sit-back-in-your-chair food. What I appreciate most is that no one rushes you out. The service is attentive but quiet, and the room has this unspoken agreement that phones stay down and conversations stay long. This was my first time having dinner at The Cellar, and it lived up to its reputation for intimate, elevated dining. I've visited before for drinks and their steak tartare, but sitting down for a full meal really showcased what this place is all about. I started with the lobster bisque, which was rich, velvety, and indulgent, with a generous amount of crème fraîche that gave it incredible depth and smoothness. It might have been on the saltier side, but I did not mind. For my entrée, I had the chef's special duck confit chicken thighs with truffle oil, served over mashed potatoes and chives. Hidden gem--literally hidden downstairs! I was able to snag a reservation on a Sunday at 5:00 p.m., and it was well worth it. The space has great theming and a cozy, intentional vibe that immediately sets the tone. Service was attentive without being overbearing, which made the experience even better. The food was delicious. The salmon was perfectly cooked (surprisingly both our favorite item), and the bone marrow absolutely melted in your mouth. For the quality of the food and overall experience, the prices felt very reasonable. Parking wasn't an issue when I went, but I could see it being more challenging on a busy Friday or Saturday night. First timer but not a last timer! I really enjoyed this restaurant from the story behind its design, the history of famous visitors, the mysterious vibe, and delicious food. From start to finish all of it was awesome. We have dined at The Cellar several times, but for this visit we just felt like a drink at the bar and an appetizer or two. I recommend using OpenTable to make a reservation. Even with an early 5pm reservation for the bar, we got the last two seats. They have a happy hour from 4pm to 6pm seven days a week with some pretty good deals on a few food items and several drinks. We ordered two bowls of lobster bisque which is normally $20 each but it is only $12 during happy hour. It was good and on par with a lobster bisque at any nice restaurant. It had several clumps of lobster, wasn't overly salty, and the cognac wasn't overly strong so no issues there. For drinks, we went off the regular cocktail menu. I had the Scorpion which is served in a tiki style mug. For a drink with both rum and brandy, it was balanced very well as brandy has a way of overpowering everything. But not with this drink and I enjoyed it. She had the seasonal Crimson & Clover which was good also. We were still a little hungry so we ordered the crab cake. It's served on a bed of tartar sauce with some greens on top. It was good but not great and I wouldn't order it again for $25. Some of my pictures look very bright but the restaurant is actually lit on the dimmer side and has a nice cozy feel. Parking in downtown Fullerton is always a challenge. There are a dozen or so parking spots right behind the restaurant and we got lucky and got one of those. Service was good and we were thanked on the way out. The Cellar is definitely on the pricey side. I am not a big meat eater so generally find steakhouses boring and uninspired. But I dined at The Cellar for the first time this week and loved both my meal and the entire experience. Service was fantastic, fine dining without being stuffy or pretentious. And the tenderloin was cooked perfectly, with a mushroom cream sauce that I would drink from a bowl. Cocktails run a bit fruity, which I don't love, but I had an excellent one that was citrusy and spicy. The bar area is small, maybe 9 seats around the bar. I got there early so there was plenty of open seating. I asked the bartender if they had any cocktails with coconut cream and she said she could make me something. I didn't ask what was in it but it was great. I ended up chatting with the gentleman that sat next to me at the bar then my friend arrived. We ordered her a glass of wine and I ordered another random cocktail that the bartender made me. Unexpectedly, the gentleman at the bar paid for our round! Great way to start the night!! :) The hostess came and got us and took us to this private booth. The vibe and decor here is great! Our server was Heather and she was really nice. We both ordered soup. My friend had the lobster bisque and I had the French onion soup. OMG, it's SO good! It has some tender pieces of beef in it, the perfect level of saltiness with the melted cheese.....my mouth is watering! lol Then we shared the "classic Chateaubriand for two". It's 10oz of filet each with mashed potatoes and they give you plenty unlike the wooden pearl that I was at recently. It comes with a soft cooked onion and vegetables. It was perfect!! We ordered it medium and it was cooked to perfection! I probably would have added salt to mine if there was salt on the table but the two sauces gave it enough extra flavor. It's served with béarnaise sauce and a red-wine sauce. I preferred the béarnaise sauce. And we were stuffed but since we were celebrating my friends birthday, I ordered the petite chocolate soufflé with salted Carmel sauce and the sticky toffee pudding. They also brought her a birthday dessert which was a sorbet. My friend liked the soufflé and I preferred the warm sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. I highly recommend that one! It was great! It's a little pricey but I think everything is pricey nowadays! I spent $380 with tips including our drinks at the bar. Experience here was INCREDIBLE from start to finish. The ambiance inside gives that of a truly hidden gem, where you tuck away from the world and dine like royalty. The interior is very elegant with a cool sense of being underground, befitting of their name. The service is phenomenal, Lily really went above and beyond to ensure my experience was the best it could be. The food here is to die for, specifically the lobster bisque which was by far the best I've ever had. They pour it fresh in front of you and they are not skimpy with the lobster. The bartender has unbelievable talent and can whip up just about anything, except for a Bloody Mary or a Vodka & Coke. The spicy marg he made had my tastebuds tingling and jumping for joy! The filet mignon was cooked perfectly (medium rare is the only right answer here by the way), had a great sear, and they give quite the generous portion. The dessert was bomb and a perfect way to end such a fantastic meal. Bonus points to the servers for how they present each dish, really elevates the experience that much more. She also never let our water go empty, she was always refilling them which I really appreciated. The mock-tail I got was very creamy, I forgot the name of it but it was very refreshing. The complementary bread was delicious with the butter. Me and my friend ordered the steak tartare. I personally didn't like it but my friend enjoyed it. We came here for my bfs bday. We were lucky to be able to park right behind it so a close walk. We were sat to the right in a table for 2. The staff were very friendly and took us to our table. We brought wine (corkage $40) and the sommelier came to help open the bottle of wine since the server wanted to ensure the best experience with the wax seal on the top. Our favorite appetizer here was the steak tartare. To our surprise, the presentation has changed. It tasted good, but we preferred the previous presentation with the egg yolk on the top and thin crostinis vs served as a tapa. I felt like the bread to tartare balance wasn't as good as before because the bread is thicker. The complimentary bread basket was delicious! The onion bread was really tasty and all of them tasted fresh off the oven with their butter being very creamy. We decided to order the chateaubriand for 2 and the presentation didn't disappoint. I ordered it medium rare closer to the rare, but it came medium to medium well. I was not going to send it back so we accepted it like that. The flavour was delicious and the 2 sauces tasted good with it. It would've been better at the proper temperature. The carrots were perfectly cooked and the broccolette was very crunchy. The mashed potatoes were also good with a large portion. The server mentioned that he would get a complimentary crème brulee for his bday, but if we wanted another dessert we should let her know. The Cellar is a hidden gem with a well known reputation. Excellent for special occasions or even just for a drinks and happy hour! This romantic upscale French restaurant never fails to deliver an elegant experience. The Cellar Escargot is the the perfect introduction to escargot, it's hard to not like something that's drenched with butter! This was my wife's first time trying escargot and despite her hesitation she enjoyed it very much. The 16oz Creekstone Ribeye is typically cooked a bit more on the rare side but trust the chef, you will understand why once you experience all of the flavor this ribeye has! Let me just say - the ambiance in this place reminds me of those old mob movies/Sopranos where you make deals, something like Carbone. We were there for my friends birthday, and were promptly seated, however the seating arrangement we were in was pretty isolated from the restaurant, which can be great for some - but felt a bit weird for us. Nonetheless our server, Gracie, was attentive throughout the entire night, and the food came out quickly and delicious. Everything on this menu is pretty hefty, and I had the Icelandic Cod. As a lover of Thai food, I wanted to see what their take on Tom Kha was, and it did not disappoint. Located in a basement, the restaurant was nicely decorated and felt like you're living a different era. Not what I was expecting in terms of flavor and was truly surprised! We also had a complimentary bread basket which we devoured, then had the bone marrow appetizer and French onion soup. The bone marrow came in a big portion and was full of flavor. I didn't eat much of the bread since it was too hard for my liking. The French onion soup was delicious! Great service since they split it for us into two bowls so we can enjoy our soup. The best French onion soup I've ever had. For our entree, we had chef's choice. From what I remember, it was a 20oz medium rare Boneless Ribeye with a blue cheese sauce and duchess potatoes. With the sauce, it reminded us of what a dry aged steak tasted like, which blew our minds. The potatoes were also delicious. And you can't forget the dessert... we ordered a petite chocolate soufflé with salted caramel anglaise. They recommend ordering as you get your entree as it takes time to prepare. I just hope since I went there 2 years after Ernest Z..sold and retired. I was really anxious to try under the new ownership and management. What a huge disappointment. The place had no host to greet anyone. The bar booth had roaches running along the walls behind us. When going to the ladies room, the toilet seat cover holder was falling off the wall, the wallpaper was peeling off the walls, it was dirty and floors had not been cleaned. I was totally disgusted.... I decided I would NEVER go back. They had only "off shelf" liquor. I would not give it over a 2 Star. I was also not impressed with the food. OK, I have been to France several times. Abd I would not expect it to be up the French. But the food was ok..but nothing stand out. The flavor was okay, but overall it felt disappointing for what you pay. Another friend had the chicken dish, which had an interesting flavor and a good portion size. We were excited to try The Cellar, but the execution didn't match the price point. This should be a polished $$$$ steakhouse experience, and instead it felt disjointed and mediocre. MENU The menu is already very limited, so it's frustrating when key items aren't available. We were told they were out of escargot at open (4:30pm) on a Saturday. That's not a "stuff happens" moment--at this price point it reads like poor inventory management. SERVICE / PACING The pacing was the main problem all night. Soups and salads didn't land together, and there was roughly a 25-minute gap before we realized one of the lobster bisques we ordered simply wasn't coming. By the time it was addressed, the table had already moved on. The lobster bisque that did arrive was salty and consequently hard to eat. They mention the recipe hasn't changed since 1969, and it may be time for a refresh. It tasted like straight cream and salt, and the lobster flavor was muddled in the excess intensity. There was also a long dead period after the table was cleared around 5:15. Mains didn't arrive until about 5:35, with minimal communication in between. For this type of establishment, that's unacceptable--especially when wine glasses are empty and you're unable to order another drink because the server is hard to flag down. The server wasn't hostile, but there were stretches earlier/mid-service where she disappeared for 10-15 minutes at a time, which compounded everything. BAR / WINE SERVICE (biggest miss) Wine service was the biggest disappointment. The first glass tasted clearly off (I'm not certified expert, but I'm experienced enough to know something wasn't right--corked/brett/oxidized). The sommelier tasted it and said there was no fault. I asked for a sanity check with a second bottle/taste, and it was night-and-day different (full fruit, no bandaid/VA coming off the glass)...confirming the first bottle wasn't right. It's a shame for a steakhouse at this level to not have staff adequately trained in their trade. I want to be clear that I'm not calling out the service side as they handled this phenomenally. Overall, I was genuinely shocked at how bad the experience was relative to the price. This place has potential, but I'd look elsewhere if you want a reliably great steakhouse night. We loved that we didnt feel rushed and the food was delicious. Winter Hearts Mocktail 5/5 We didn't know what to expect since it has orange, almond and white chocolate. Octopus skewers 5/5 Don't touch the skewer like I did, metal is hot The texture is soft and not chewy at all. The potatoes it comes with are also so buttery, herby and delicious. I celebrated my nine year anniversary with my wife here. We were sat immediatley (with our reservation) into a cozy and intimate booth. Moody, dinner appropriate lighting unaccompanied by exsessive noise allowed us to instantly relax into the setting. My wife had been talking about a cocktail from this place for months, but it was rotated off of thier seasonal menu, but the staff did more than thier due dilligence, went above and beyond, and found the beverage for her. Gracie was a 10/10 server, professional, quick, and kind. Tar-Tar was excellent, bone barrow was excellent, salmon was excellent, and the drinks were so good you can barley help but to order four of them. What a disappointing experience! Extremely slow service.. waited for 30 min to even get drinks and menu to order. Total dinner.. 3 hours! Salty lobster bisque soup, dry and bland duck breast. Highlight was soufflé, but didn't make up for main dishes, slow service and overall experience. Server apologized by stating food took longer because of another large party they had to accommodate. It's simply not what one should expect from fine dining restaurant of this caliber.. disappointed and will not be returning! We just celebrated our 33rd anniversary at The Cellar last weekend and could not have been happier with both the food and the service. Shannon was our waitress and was absolutely amazing. Upon learning of our anniversary we were each given a glass of champagne which was a great touch. It was not hard to find and loved the atmosphere. I can't wait to go back. read more

We went The Cellar for a birthday celebration We had the following: 1. Steak tartare: 3/5, very little flavor 2. Bone marrow topped with fig jam: 6/5 3. Free bread basket with 3 different rolls: 4/5, can ask for second break basket for a $5 fee 4. Short rib ragu: 4.4/5, tasty, had small amount of shredded short rib meat, $47 was pricy for what you get 5. Brussel sprouts: 2/5, little bland and not as soft as I was expecting 6. Lobster bisque: 3.4/5, very flavorful but too salty 7. Burrata salad: 4/5, burrata to greens ratio was great Mocktails: 8. River of Dreams: 2.7/5, very sweet 9. Sweet Dreams: 5/5, nice tea flavor Dessert 10. Happy birthday dessert, Vanilla ice cream over chocolate crumble 11. Petite Vanilla Souffle with seasonal blueberry cream: 5/5 Service was great. Waitress was super friendly and attentive. Atmosphere is good for dates, dimly lit with and overhead light and a candle. Our whole experience was outstanding. The host was gracious and friendly. Our food was delicious and perfectly prepared steak and salmon entrees. Dessert of sticky pudding was perfection. Most important of all was the outstanding and professional service exhibited by Shannon. She was the consummate waitperson. Kind, gracious, knowledgeable, and absolutely engaging, we were very impressed with her and appreciated her entree, appetizer and dessert suggestions. Sometimes life (or, in our case, punctuality) conspires against you. We rolled into The Cellar in Fullerton just late enough to miss the full main menu and be relegated to happy hour like culinary delinquents. Tragic? Potentially. Fatal? Not under Laura's watch. Laura clocked our vibe immediately, three friends, mildly annoyed at ourselves, hungry enough to make poor decisions, and proceeded to not let that happen. With the calm confidence of someone who actually knows the menu (a rare and precious trait), she guided us flawlessly through the happy hour offerings like a seasoned sommelier of satisfaction. Her recommendations were surgical: steak sandwich and lobster bisque, charcuterie, and mac and cheese that somehow managed to feel indulgent, comforting, and more than sufficient despite the "limited" menu. We did not miss the mains. Not even a little. That's a flex. And just when we thought we were done (and full), Laura casually suggested the soufflé and crème brûlée, because obviously we still had room. She was right. Again. Both desserts were excellent, and at this point, we were just nodding along like, "Yes, Laura, tell us what to eat next." She was keen, sharp, and prudent in her recommendations, never pushy, always on point, and turned what could've been a compromised dining experience into a thoroughly satisfying one. My two friends and I left full, happy, and slightly embarrassed we ever doubted the power of a great server. We absolutely plan to return, on time next time, to tackle the full main menu, and when we do, we'll be asking for Laura. Because when someone gets it this right, you don't mess with the formula. This place compares to all the high end restaurants... the food was all well seasoned and the drinks super well balanced. The filet was soft and supple and the duck too. The bone marrow was good but I think I prefer a char vs jam. The oysters were good which surprised me because it's not a seafood place and the tuna tartare was fresh. The food was great and service was solid. I think the ambiance is a classic place and underground so it has that cellar feeling. It's my personal preference to be above ground and open air but I get the charm. Also we had to ask for water to be refilled which is not the end of the world but it was about an attentive service that would tip this over to full stars. read more

A very unique experience, here at The Cellar Restaurant. Loved the location of the restaurant; since it was in the cozy Fullerton downtown area. When we first walked in, it gave a pleasant "bodega" feel to the place. With the stairs in the front to the front wooden door, it gave a different feel to the place. The restaurant is dark but in a good way. Seats gave it a vintage look and walls gave it a nice touch to it. At first, we were welcomed with a drinks menu. After ordering our drinks, we had to ask the waitress for the food menu. Prices were high, so I would be expecting good food. We ordered their Cellar Escargot to start; followed by their Lobster Bisque. For our Entrees, we went with the 16oz. Striploin ($84) and their special of the day, which was their Duck ($49) The steak was tasty; since the meat was lean, it was a bit chewy. Duck was superb.!!! To end the dinner, we ordered their Classic Chocolate Souffle, with Grand Marnier Anglaise ($12). It was airy, and fluffy. Overall, we had a great time here. It's a unique fine dining experience with friendly staff. read more
