I will say it's cool to walk down the stairs to underground and the lighting is nice. For me that's where it stopped. Lemonade was just glass of sugar. After the hour wait to get our food it wasn't anything spectacular. The food and service were great. I loved the lobster mac and cheese. This was one of my first experiences with fine dining, and although I would still much rather eat a home-cooked meal or go to a mom-and-pop shop, the experience was neat. Apparently this is my boyfriend's favorite restaurant, so we came here for date night, and the waiter was knowledgeable and welcoming. It does give speakeasy vibes because the lighting is very dim, but it feels cozy and underground. The salad was pretty okay, and the steak was all right, as well as the bread. The dessert was extremely hot, but we could have done without it. The cocktail I ordered had too much alcohol in it, so we had to ask for it to be altered, which I despise doing. But I drink for flavor, not to get drunk. All in all, I don't know if I would return since I paid like $200 for the two of us. But, it was new and something to cross off my bucket list. read more

we celebrated our anniversary at the Cellar on a Friday night, i was a huge fan of the ambiance and speakeasy vibe they had going on. it was honestly the perfect place for an intimate dinner and special occasion but although i made a reservation in advance, we still had to wait 10-15 min for a table to open up. it seemed they were pretty busy and the waiting area also was pretty cramped unfortunately but they allowed us to get a couple drinks while we waited. once we were seated, our waiter was excellent and gave pretty good recommendations. ordered: ~ drinks: London Fog- so good! unlike any drink ive had before and perfectly floral / Scorpion - would skip this one, nothing special / Currant Events - also unique but super strong ~ food: lobster bisque - delicious app! sad there wasnt a bigger size, so creamy and decadent / Short Rib - meat was tender and flavor was good but pretty salty for our taste / Filet Mignon - star of the night, cooked to perfection, tender and seasoned well, also really enjoyed the garlic potatoes under they also gave us a complimentary dessert of vanilla ice cream+raspberries, with a anniversary chocolate which was such a sweet gesture. dinner was pretty good but overall though, i probably would try another dinner spot to celebrate before returning here just because of the price and having to wait. read more

I ate here over the summer but felt compelled to talk about how great my experience was! We had the lamb chops, the tenderloin, and the chef's special that day which was a pistachio parmesan crusted filet mignon! Honestly, I need to start a petition to have the pistachio parmesan crusted filet mignon be a year-round dinner option. It was DELICIOUS! Best steak i've ever had in my life and that's being honest. It came with butternut squash and tasted impeccable. The complimentary bread and butter was delicious and hard to stop eating, the sides were amazing and fresh and portioned perfectly. The drinks were also amazing. Not too strong, but definitely had a little zing! They also offer mocktails which is nice. The ambiance was what drew me to this place initially though. My wife and I had an excellent time dining here while celebrating our anniversary. I suggest coming early to find parking on the streets because DT Fullerton gets very busy during night time. The entrance is a bit hard to find, but you have to to inside the old-looking Villa del Sol building and look for a sign that says "The Cellar". There's a light staircase that leads you down into the restaurant. It's an exquisite entrance. The ambiance gives you vibes of the 1980s with classic music playing in the background while you're in a cave-like restaurant with low light. It's a great getaway from boisterous restaurants. We came early prior to our reservation to enjoy their happy hour (everyday 4pm-6pm), which is held only at the bar area. We ordered the Steak Sandwich ($17), Mac & Cheese w/ Lobster ($19 w/ lobster or $9 w/o), Gordon's Cup ($11), and Moscow Mule ($9). They really pride themselves on their drinks and I can tell why because the cocktails were tasty and had plenty of alcohol. The MM hit the spot because I could taste the strong flavor of the ginger beer. The steak sandwich was flavorful and had a good portion of steak, which was tender and juicy. The mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy with slight chunks of lobster meat. After Happy Hour, we moved to the main seating area where were were served warm bread and butter. Ordered the Ricotta Polpette ($18), Halibut ($58), Chef's Choice: Braised Pork Cheeks with chives mashed potatoes ($45). The Halibut and Braised Pork Cheeks were the star of the show because they were delicious. The Halibut was delicate and had a crispy sear while lying on a bed of grilled baby carrots and beet carpaccio. The pork cheeks were tender and flavorful with a slight char to add texture. The chives mashed potatoes were creamy and delicious. The Ricotta Polpette was okay and reminded me of a Gnudi in marinara sauce. To cap the night, we ordered a petite vanilla souffle with root beer anglaise sauce. The soufle was delicate, flavorful, and had a slight sweet custard. I've been to the cellar a few times and each time has been a unique experience when compared to other dining restaurants. First off the restaurant is underground. You have to go down a flight of stairs to get into it. The atmosphere is designed after an underground area from pirates of the Caribbean. This is due to the fact that the same designer that designed the ride at Disneyland designed the restaurant. The food is excellent. Last time i was here I had the chateaubriand which was delectable. The service here is always up to the strictest standards. Honestly I have never experienced anything but a five star from the cellar. I've been here multiple times over the past 9 years to celebrate birthdays and it's disappointing to see if this bonus has changed or if someone forgot that we were celebrating a birthday. Waiter also mentioned that they would take our dessert order before our main course arrived since it takes 20 minutes to prepare but they forgot and we had to flag down another staff member. We politely asked to be moved and they moved us immediately to a new table (thank you!). The server offered recommendations which ended up being stellar, and never let us sit too long without drinks or our next course. Food overall was incredible! I heard so many good things about this place, especially that they are known for their delicious cocktails. I was unsure about which drink to try my server Megan recommended "In Bloom" and omg this drink was absolutely amazing. I loved it so much I got a second drink. We were a party of 4 and celebrating my friends anniversary. Things I tried... Bone marrow: It was probably the best thing we ordered besides my cocktail. It was super flavorful and came with mini crostinis which were super crispy. Crab-cakes: It was my first time trying crab cakes and I will probably never try it again. In my opinion it was super fishy and it didn't have a pleasant taste. No one in my party liked it. Lobster bisque: It was super creamy and very delicious. I would definitely order this again. First bite was real rubbery. Second bite was RAW CHICKEN!! I cut the rest of the chicken apart and was APPALLED to find the entire chicken was RAW. Not undercooked.... No. Raw chicken. The waitress, upon seeing my plate, was nonchalant... "Oh, that looks rare". We corrected her. Um, no... RAW!! Her attitude suggests to me this was NOT an isolated occurrence. The couple next to us looked mortified to know we were served raw chicken. That was Friday. I gave the restaurant the benefit of the doubt over the weekend and was expecting some sort of follow up from the restaurant this week. Nothing. Silence. No apology from the restaurant manager that night -- no apology from the chef either. No follow up phone call (I booked online - they have my contact information). I've waited 2 business days and 4 days total before posting this review. Shame on you, The Cellar, for allowing this to happen Shame on you, The Cellar, for NOT following up with someone you "poisoned". Shame on the Head Chef for allowing this failure. The ambiance is nice. The food and service were subpar. We were excited to try this place given the decent yelp score and menu offerings. Specifically the escargot, chateaubriand, and soufflé, which are not commonly made anymore. Sadly, they were all bad. The chateaubriand was apparently cooked in a rush. It was overdone and charred to a crisp on the outside. It was served tableside (as is customary) but instead of being sliced into medallions, the server cut it haphazardly into chunks. I've had escargot several times at fine restaurants, and they are always prepared in a special tin that allow each snail to be baked with its' own puff pastry. However, at the Cellar, they were served in a small soup bowl, floated in gravy, with a thin biscuit on top. It was severely underwhelming. A good soufflé is hard to make, because it requires careful attention to get it light and fluffy. Here, the soufflé was thick and cakey, essentially destroying the point of the dessert. Our server was mostly absent and provided the minimal level of service that one can expect at any common diner. She took our drink order, our entree order, and our dessert order. Our dinner was served by a team of runners. Two of the dishes were brought with cloches covering them. The aforementioned chateaubriand was sawn into quarters and then left with us. None of the runners removed the cloches, so I took them off and placed them on the empty table nearest us. After a few minutes, another person came out, put the cloches back on, and then removed them. Very strange! Our dessert order was wrong, and we let the waitress know. She didn't offer to bring out the correct order, but did get the incorrect item comp'd. At this point, we certainly didn't feel that we were going to be missing anything by getting the correct item, so we picked at the items that we had and called it a night. The mashed potatoes tasted and looked like it was left sitting on the counter for a while. The lobster on the mac and cheese was very dry but the mac and cheese was at least tolerable. The bone marrow didn't really taste like bone marrow since they over did the jam. The only redeeming thing was the steak and charcuterie. Would I recommend this place? Probably not since the quality and the time we got our food was not worth the price. Maybe if you do want to come here, just order an appetizer to share and call it a night. read more

Ive been to the Cellar a few times now. Whenever my family has a special occasion to celebrate, this is my first choice for a meal. The Cellar is without a doubt in my top 5 restaurants that I've eaten at, and it is a strong contender for my favorite. The atmosphere is amazing. The basement vibe with a very dark and candle-like ambiance is a great tone setter for the meal. The place feels very serious, in the best way. Everything about the setting feels carefully prepared, which helps suggest that the meal you are about to eat will also be very carefully made, with attention to the smallest details. The atmosphere is not where the excellence stops. I have tried a wide variety of dishes here and I have yet to be disappointed. I think the best way to go about a meal here is to split multiple entrees and appetizers and taste everything that sounds interesting. This was the first place I tried escargot and octopus and both times they were show-stealers (I've since had escargot at other places and can safely say that the Cellar was leagues better). I think my favorite item that I try to get in some capacity each time I come here is the duck. The duck has a somewhat salty taste with a bit of fat that is a very unique meat taste and better than other meats I've tried. I am also a big fan of the mac and cheese side and the short rib. Service here has always been great as well. If you have a special occasion coming up and are willing to try some of the items on the menu, I highly recommend you check out the Cellar! read more

The Cellar is probably my favorite birthday spot, not just for the ambience, but because their cocktails are just as good as their entrees. The service is fantastic, as well. We've been coming here for years and have never had a bad experience. Yes, it's best to make a reservation. You can't just show up with a large party 15 minutes before the kitchen closes and expect to be accommodated. (Honestly, that's inconsiderate no matter where you go.) The steak had a very strong taste resembling a wet rag. Although it was tender, I have no clue why my steak had that rancid taste that even my wife agreed upon trying it herself. I don't go to a lot of expensive restaurants but I know when a steak is off and that steak was OFF and maybe that is just how they cook it but it 100% did not taste right. I feel like something went wrong in the kitchen with the preparation/storage of meat. It being my anniversary I just played it off and did not want to ruin our dinner and did not complain about it at the risk of being told "that is just how it's prepared" or even "we cannot prepare another entree just because you didn't like it". Plus I didn't want to wait again for another entree if they did decide to change my dish. Someone took the time to assemble my dish knowing it was not right and probably thought to themselves "f*** it send it " Maybe I'm the crazy one , maybe I'm the one that doesn't appreciate good food but never ever have I had steak taste like that or even had puréed potatoes served as a watery sauce. Good thing I also ordered the Mac and cheese which was soooo good (highly recommend) or else I would have left hungry ****I do recommend this place I think it is gorgeous but just **PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY AND DO NOT ORDER THE TENDERLOIN WITH THE POMME PUREE** If you're anything like me you will be disappointed with the preparation of this dish. PS I think Caden was our server and he was very very kind in giving his recommendations and guiding us through the menu he doesn't just forget about you and makes sure your table has what you need. God bless him for being so welcoming and giving us a sorbet for me and my wife for our anniversary even left a little note in the receipt !! read more
