The food is good, the service is lacking. Ordered delivery via door dash and an item was missing. I was a little disappointed so I called to let them know. The person that answered the phone, Penny, attempted to transfer me to someone else and the line disconnected. I called again, same thing happened. By the third time, I was frustrated and told her that I kept getting disconnected when she was trying to transfer me. She said she could help me or try transferring me once more. I again explained my issue to her and instead of helping me or assuring me the staff would double check deliveries more carefully, she silently tried to transfer me again and I was disconnected. We were both pleasantly surprised with the food (we were both hungry and forgot to take pictures of the food. We both ordered a Cheesesteak sandwich and a side of onion rings. The bread was fresh and chewy. The meat was moist, cheese was gooey and the onions and peppers combined well with the meat. I've been coming to the Cheese Steak Shop in Walnut Creek about once a month for years since I volunteer at the gallery down the street. Unfortunately, over the last several visits, there always seems to be some kind of issue with my order or a miscommunication. The staff needs to do a better job listening carefully and processing customers' orders. The last few times I've been here and something is always wrong. Wrong size fries, wrong type of fries, wrong sandwich size. Its been on a repeated basis. Javier the manager, whom I've known for 17 years works really hard and he does a great job running the place. But sometimes Javier's not there and the staff on duty can't process my order correctly. I've kept on tolerating it because I understand we're all people and we make mistakes. But time and time again, I'm starting to lose a little patience here. On the contrary, thank goodness they built the Pleasant Hill location just in recent years because they do a much better job and I'm there every Tuesday. David and Juliana are great and friendly. But Walnut Creek, when Javier is not there? They need to do better. This will be my last time at the Walnut Creek location. I'll just stick to Pleasant Hill restaurant from now on. The potato part was still harden and it was not crispy. It didn't even taste like it had much flavor. I got the large sized cheesesteak for $16 a large fries for six dollars half of a cheesesteak. Would it cost close to $9-$12 dollars the food here is very expensive service with pretty low quality. I would not recommend this place especially for that amount of money you spend a cheesesteak should not have the flavor of hamburger helper, a cheap quality pasta 1 star ripoff place. Delish My favorite is the King which is prepared with extra meat and cheese. My strategy is to eat 1/2 for dinner which is plenty filling and reserve the remainder to reheat for lunch the next day! After looking on Yelp for a place that sells a good cheesesteak sandwich, we found "The Cheese Steak Shop" here in Walnut Creek. The place appears to be a hole-in-the wall type of establishment, which in my opinion is always a good sign. We went in and said, 'let's do this!" Upon walking in the door, we were greeted almost immediately with a warm smile. Another good sign. When I looked up at the menu and saw that they had onion rings, I knew this had to be a good place to eat. The order was placed and when the food was ready, I couldn't wait to sit down and taste it. The first bite into the cheesesteak was heavenly. Then a bite of the onion rings revealed a nice hot crunchy delicious flavor. Wow..wow..wow. Our meal was really good to say the least! This is the original! Best cheesesteak for many many many miles! I remember the original box, but the cheesesteak is the same quality.

I frequent this location regularly even though there are other locations that are closer to my house because the food is sooo much better and the service I usually quick and pleasant. This is important to me since I am usually calling while on the road about to pass through Walnut creek. I literally called a total of 11 times and let the phone ring until it hung up each time. I walked into the location while the phone is ringing to find 3 team members just chatting it up and the phone ringing. I explained that I had been calling for the last 25 minutes and asked why they had not answered the phone. Matt explained that his boss had instructed them to not answer the phone and that they no longer are taking phone orders due to the amount of people who don't pick them up. I then order my food and sit and wait. As much as I love the food here, they have just lost my business. Ordering online while driving is not an option. You might want to put a message on the answering machine stating you are no longer taking to go orders over the phone so you don't have more guests like me spending 25 minutes calling you when we could be calling someone else and have picked it up. read more
