I tired this place when I first moved here in 2015. I liked my food however the service was horrible. I decided to finally give this place another shot this year (2019). Food was still good and the service was still horrible. My boyfriend and I were literally the only customers in the restaurant. We were never handed silverware and napkins. When we were ready to pay for our check the employees were no where in site. I understand it's the slow season here since Myrtle Beach is a seasonal city. However, it's during this time you meet the locals. And your locals are who keep you in business. A restaurant should not only have to rely on its food to bring people back. Service is key! Awful. Walked in and the place was dark and dingy looking. We were rudely "greeted" by the bartender telling us to sit wherever. When we got menus we asked which cocktails had an effect to them(smoking) and we were told they were out of dry ice, said with an eye roll like we were stupid for coming in for that. Even though that's exactly how they market themselves, a bar for a chemist, with special effects. This is a fun little place with excellent food. Its a short menu, which tells me that they specialize in making and perfecting the flavors and experience. The staff is friendly and management tends to greet everyone. I just went and got the Poke Bowl- spicy ahi poke tuna served rare with wakame, poke sauce and scallions. Scallops- served with wakame, thai butter and caviar. It was all perfected and cooked just right. Very flavorful. The ahi tuna just melts in your mouth with just a little kick of spice. Not too powerful. You can tell that short menued places tend to have the best food as they focus on and specialize in perfecting their menu. Well deserving of 5 stars. read more

The drinks alone are a reason to go here. Almost all drink ingredients are made in house and the drinks are soooo good. The dry ice on the table garnish and the drink make it really fun and the environment is really cool. The food was surprisingly amazing. My short rib was PERFECTLY cooked, melted in your mouth and ripped apart so easily, the sauce was great too and the green beans were cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Huge disappointment! I had this place bookmarked for awhile in anticipation of our visit to Myrtle Beach. We made a special trip here after a long day with a packed schedule to check out the space. Unfortunately, the whole experience fell flat from the time we walked through the door. Without overly explaining every single detail, I'll say that the service here is deplorable. We walked in and weren't acknowledged, so we sat ourselves at the bar. After a few minutes, my husband went to the restroom and several minutes after that still nobody acknowledged our presence. Ordinarily, in a packed bar this wouldn't be considered out of the norm, but for a Saturday evening, this bar was virtually empty except for two couples on opposite ends of the bar. Please refer to the photo to see all the empty seats. To make matters worse, there was a man behind the bar standing directly in front of us and he never spoke or offered a menu. Instead he chose to ignore us and restock the bar. Finally in what felt like forever, a pregnant waitress stood off in the distance and just stared at us and a blonde bartender hesitantly approached us and showed us the menu, but just as quickly she dismissed us and offered a lackluster insincere apology for having ignored us and yet again she went to converse with the party next to us. She eventually took our order and delivered our drinks. My husband hesitantly tried to make small talk and break the ice with the other bartender since he was standing directly in front of us the whole time and not speaking, but it was like pulling teeth. By now, I'm sure you get the picture of how the overall service was. The Chemist is a concept bar, which looks really cool. As other reviewers have noted, the decor and drinks have special effects, but beyond the aesthetics, the drinks fall flat. They are average drinks, served in scientific beakers and some even have a bowl beneath with dry ice to create the smokey effect. The location is great, but if you're younger I'd suggest heading down the road and hanging out at Broadway on the Beach. While The Chemist garners fairly high ratings on Yelp, I think it would behoove readers to consider that it is located in Myrtle Beach. I don't see this place surviving in a NYC or any larger city for that matter. Let me be very clear in saying that, regardless of whatever management says, the staff here clearly does not emphasize the importance of customer service. Furthermore, I realize that this is The South, aka Trump Country, but just because the staff dresses like hipsters, doesn't mean that they welcome diversity. All money is green and since the customers sipping on their draft beers were more of a priority than those who were excited to try premium cocktails, we will not be returning. read more

Spectacular new concept from the same gentleman that brought Myrtle Beach Art Burger & Sushi Bar. Great atmosphere, refined down to the smallest detail of decor and presentation. Food was spectacular, and very accommodating of my gluten allergy - they provided numerous gluten free friendly options, and 2/3 of the desert choices were GF! The Chemist combines lots of elements to create a fabulously kitschy locale for food and drink near the boardwalk. Geeky flare, a la light up menus and coasters, staff donning lab coats, periodic tables (literally, tables. with elements) and beaker glassware perfectly tie together their modern scientific theme. I tried the Mad Scientist draft cocktail and the Molecular Mule and enjoyed both quite a bit! Handcrafted syrups, sodas and ginger beer made in house here. I liked the different twist on a Moscow Mule with lavender-blueberry. Yum! I had the beef dish, as recommended by my waiter. It's prepped in a sous-vide, which means it will be tender by definition. It came with pineapple, potatoes and carrots that gave different sweet/salty bites to it. The flavors in this were really good, and it was a large portion that could easily be shared by two people along with a smaller plate to start. I had the mango panna cotta for dessert, which is plated to look like bacon and eggs. The panna cotta is topped with a mango gel that you 'break open' like you would when you cut into an over easy egg. There is a piece of candied bacon on the side, mine wasn't fully cooked. I have nothing against sweets with bacon, but was confused on what it was supposed to add and it left a bad taste to an otherwise great experience. read more

After paying my bill in cash a bartender at this establishment charged my card for the full bill amount on April 17h. I have attempted to speak with management, but there is not a contact number listed on google and they do not have a website at the moment. I have been back to the restaurant multiple times. The first 3 times the doors were locked. The 4th time I spoke with the same bartender (Gio or Jio) who made the error. After taking down my contact information he informed me he would let his boss know. Nearly a week later, I have yet to hear back from anyone. read more

The Chemist is amazing! I have been wanting to try it out for forever, and I am so glad I finally got the chance to this evening. While I could not have any of the fun drinks, my two friends really enjoyed theirs, and the presentation was awesome. I had the lamb, and it was cooked perfectly- very tender and flavorful! My friends and I also split the panacotta for dessert. I must admit, I was a little scared at first, but it too was delicious! Our waitress was also very kind and attentive and made some great recommendations about what to try on the menu. I wish I could remember her name so I could give her credit.. Taylor, maybe? Needless to say, everything on the menu was unlike anything I had ever tried before. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area- locals and tourists alike. Ordered a couple of appetizers while checking out some of the specialty cocktails. I ordered the sixth element and molecular mule. My husband ordered the gin fusion followed by a fat tire. Ordered the buck rabbit and sea scallops for appetizers. The decor was nice and the place was pretty empty. During the hour that we were there, I was surprised that Four glasses were broken which I found interesting and the bartender kept knocking over beakers everytime she reached across the bar. I guess beakers and graduated cylinders do not make the best cocktail glasses. The food was underwhelming, sea scallops dish was not very balanced and we could not even finish the appetizer. The buck rabbit had a nice cheese fondue but the quail egg was overcooked and the dish felt haphazardly pieced together. We decided not to order entrees due to our displeasure with the appetizers. The best thing that we had was the molecular mule. This may be the best take on a Moscow mule that I have ever tasted. I would come back just to get this drink. read more

We stopped by here for drinks this afternoon since I've heard they have good cocktails and a cool vibe. I got the gin fizz and my boyfriend got the whiskey sour. Both drinks were delicious and decently priced seeing as they were quite large ($10 gin $11 whiskey). They're open later into the night and it seems they're shooting for more of a "club" vibe at night which really isn't my scene. We were the only people in the place at around 930pm and the music was so loud we couldn't hear each other talk. The concept is fun and unique! But it looks a bit run down. Half the menus light up and there are a bit of inconsistencies in the restaurant as a whole. The waitress forgot about us for a while and everyone around us were getting served. We just ordered drinks and everyone was getting theirs (plus water) and we didn't get anything after 15 minutes. I'm pretty torn about rating this place. As a professional chemist, I was super excited to visit this snazzy restaurant/bar for my birthday weekend to nerd out after hearing about it and perusing the menu. We walked in and seated ourselves, as there wasn't a host around or signage to indicate what to do. We chose a four top table in a corner. Turns out, I picked a sticky table, but since we had already committed to sitting there, we powered through. As we sat down, I began noticing minor technical errors when it came to the topic of chemistry (most notable being the fake elements used to design the lightup cocktail menu). Anyway, we were greeted and given menus and a fun, decorative erlenmeyer not too long after sitting down. I ordered the scallop appetizer, the char siu pork belly, and a pineapple cider. Boyfriend ordered a medium wagyu steak and a beer. The scallop appetizer was nicely seared, but our plate twisted and skidded around on the table a bit as we were slicing the scallops into smaller bites. Pretty annoying. The presentation was eyecatching, but plate choice could be better. Along the way, we had to swipe a beaker from another table and ask for water, because we weren't served any at the start. Our entrees came out, and my pork belly was full of char siu flavor/sauce (bordering overbearing), but the shredded brussel sprouts were a nice complement. I almost want to say I enjoyed the brussel sprouts more than the pork belly itself. Boyfriend's steak came out medium-well instead of medium, which was pretty disappointing. The steak was still moist and tasty, but now we just wonder if it would've tasted even better if we had gotten it how we ordered. Much regret in that regard. Used the women's restroom, and the door was jammed shut. Super odd. Waitstaff had to finagle it open. Toward the end of our meal, we overheard waitstaff loudly joking about a table that just left (how one girl was too high to even finish her cocktail). The girl may or may not have been high. I don't know, but the whole scene unfolded as generally unprofessional. Like is the waitstaff going to joke about us as soon as we leave? A bit "out of place" on the touristy downtown area of Myrtle Beach, The Chemist is a new cocktail bar with a small fare menu as well. They've outdone themselves on the "chemistry" theme - enough so that every person I saw seated during my visit was constantly taking photos on their cell phones. We enjoyed okay service, but were really impressed with the drinks and atmosphere. PROS: -AMAZINGLY unique atmosphere. You can tell that so much effort has gone into the presentation of The Chemist. The tables are decorated with chemical elements. There are a plethora of various color-changing LEDs throughout the bar (not annoyingly changing, but fun). The menus are lit-up LED plates. The centerpieces are dry ice containers. Some drinks are served in a bed of dry ice for presentation. The place clearly was designed to make you want photos, and judging by the ridiculously high amount of photos on Yelp, it's succeeding. -Regular draft beers during happy hour are affordable. They have a pretty good selection of unique beers as well. (Jalapeno Pineapple beer? Yeah, they had it.) -Bathrooms were clean. -It offers a more "upscale" and "modern" feel compared to a lot of the other bars and restaurants in this particular part of Myrtle Beach. It won't feel like a lot of the other places near here. -Drinks were good, for the most part. While they're definitely expensive, each one was pretty good. The Flux Capacitor isn't kidding - this is literally liquid mint in a glass. We were told their "Moderntinis" were the highlight of the menu, but due to an olive problem that night, they weren't able to serve us those. Instead, we had a Labtini, and it was amazingly delicious as well. The party agreed it was the best mixed creme drink they'd had in a long, long time. CONS: -Service was okay. Our waitress checked in a decent amount, and we had new alcoholic drinks. We thought it was a particularly long wait for the last order of the night, though, but we were sitting around waiting... until we saw our waitress walk out the front door with her purse and outdoor jacket. It looks like she was done for her shift without saying anything or, well, doing anything. We closed out our tab with the bartender. -Prices for their signature drinks are definitely, well, pricey. Most of the cocktails that you'll want to come here for (including the ones that have dry ice smoke) are $10+. They have a happy hour from 4PM to 7PM that includes half-off some drafts and wine, though, but none of their house-made drinks. -French fries are not your typical french fries. They are made with some decorative herbs and black pepper. This makes them have a noticeably spicier taste. They aren't salty so much as "zingy". Would definitely not have them again, but the fries' presentation was nice. read more

First time in Myrtle Beach and my wife and I wanted to get a good cocktail and some food. The Chemist definitely caught our eye, as from a quick search on Yelp it's really the only bar that has cocktail in its name. Got there around 7:45 and was told it would be at least 45 minutes for a table (with 4 open "reserved") tables just sitting there. Ok, fine. Luckily there were two seats left at the bar so we sit down. Reading though some previous Yelp reviews I'm pretty excited. The drink menu is a lit up piece of plexi glass, drinks look crazy and fun so I'm excited. 5-8 minutes later we finally get asked if we're ready, so we order. I ordered their version of an Old Fashioned (Luxardo) and boy was I wrong. I've had some bad Old Fashions before, but this one has to be in the top 5. When I get it the total volume in the glass is like maybe 1/2" and it looks like the majority of it is crushed up cherries (like at least 3-4), plus an orange and a splash of whisky. Now I am an Old Fashion snob, just going to put it out there, and I get crushing up fruit and pouring some whisky on it somehow over the course of history has qualified as an Old Fashion, but in this case I just won't except that. I'm immediately deflated and from that point forward in the night the place looses its edge as I switch to beer. Food: As far as food goes we got a few bar snacks including the flat bread and sliders which were both good. We were sitting at the bar right next to the food window and honestly that little kitchen can push out some food. Everything looked great, molecular gastronomy at its best. Would defiantly go again and try an actual entree. Service: Overall it seemed fairly well run, it took awhile to get our drink orders or in general attention from any of the waiters or bartender. I think the biggest problem was when the bartender was in the weeds the servers were just standing around. They could have been helping make drinks or at least get beers, waters, etc. I think just a bit of polish in general as far as service and the bar is run would take this place to the next level. Overall The Chemist was a funky little place. If going for dinner call ahead and make reservations so you get a table. Don't expect too much with the drinks, although they seem like they know what they are doing regarding cocktails they do not. Are they fun looking, yes. Do they taste good, no. Maybe they just need to get a bartender who can just focus on the drinks. read more

Wait staff was attentive and the "of age" members of the group ordered speciality cocktails that were tasty. Food came out a little slow but piping hot. The short ribs and shrimp scampi were the bright spots although the other meals were satisfactory but not exceptional. Would recommend but not sure if worth a long wait. read more

We dined here tonight and found it to be A very fun themed restaurant, we loved all of the decor. We ordered appetizers, sweet potatoes and shrimp. The sweet potatoes were not all cooked, some burned your mouth and the rest were cold. The shrimp were awesome! My daughter is vegan, and there were no vegan options on the menu however our waitress checked with the chef and they were able to accommodate and provide a really great meal. I ordered the Wagyu steak and it was amazing I loved it I would highly recommend. My other daughter or the chicken sandwich loved it. My son and our friend ordered the special of the day lobster mac and cheese and we have mixed reviews on this one. My son loved it and our friend had a piece of mushy lobster that was not good it was very fishy smelling. Eew. Went here early on a Saturday night and we were seated right away. I loved the decor and overall feeling of the space. Our server was attentive and made sure our drinks were never empty. Drink wise I had a Flux Capacitor and a Molecular Mule. Both were refreshing and delicious. My husband had a Thyme Machine and a Bourbon Flask; they were equally as good. Most drinks are served in beakers which I enjoyed since I'm a little nerdy. Not exactly tapas, but I really liked everything we tried here! First, the concept was pretty awesome since I am and was with a bunch of science nerds. Our server dressed in a white lab coat and his hair slightly unkempt, haha! It was perfect. He brought out some dry ice to put in the red colored water in the Erlenmeyer flask centerpiece, and we had a good time watching the "chemical reaction" and taking videos. Our drinks were all very tasty. I would recommend both the drinks we tried: one was a key lime pie margarita or something. It tasted like a pina colada with a fantastic presentation. Also I think I had a strawberry mojito, also good! Our appetizers included the poke, served on a bed of seaweed salad, and perfectly fried sweet potato tots. Then our entrees were a sriracha fried chicken burger and wagyu steak. So it seems like they were going for some kind of Asian fusion (even if Yelp says "Modern European), and I think they did it well. We ordered them anyway and got what we expected - factory produced small tots with commercially available dipping sauce. Same with the entrees. Nothing really made in-house except the 4 desserts. Went there at the end of a Friday night for some great drinks and atmosphere --- not disappointed at all, and highly recommend weekends since Lucky the bartender is the best!! They were showing the science channel and we also enjoyed checking out the decor and glassware. In addition to some great drinks, we also got their charcuterie plate. There was an interesting thing on spoons in addition to the manchego and salumi -- which we later learned was olive caviar (liquid spherification caviar) -- so it lived up to the chemist theme of molecular gastronomy :) While it was interesting and fun, it wasn't the best charc plate overall (lacked a sweet counterpoint like honey or jam to spread), so I wished we had chosen a different app. We finished out with the Labtini which was absolutely awesome and definitely worth trying if you like coffee and Kahlua.
