So we stopped by this place, and it was a good idea. We ordered different appetizers, and they were all good. I also ordered the large clam chowder, which was so creamy and packed with clams so filling. Next time, I will order the cup of chowder so I can eat more appetizers. I can't remember how I heard about this place, but it's definitely the definition of "have to hear about it". Now that I've made it out here, I can say, it's actually not really what I was expecting. The food is *exactly* what I was expecting (great), but I was expecting it to feel pretty industrial. In fact, the drive there, up until the parking lot, does feel pretty dang industrial, then you get out of your car, walk out onto the pier, and suddenly, I felt like I was back in the Florida Keys. We got there just after dusk, and it was downright pretty. We sat outside, surrounded by boats, and it didn't feel industrial at all. I'd go so far as to call the ambiance "nice". So that was a great surprise. I already knew what was here to try (their ridiculous "double chowder burger", a regular burger doused in chowder then sprinkled with fried clams). My wife got a regular bowl of clam chowder and a side of garlic bread - both are $14, as is the chowder bowl. No matter how you do it, the chowder is excellent chowder - there aren't a huge *number* of clams, but they're big, meaty clams rather than the cheapo minced clams you usually see, and the soup is very rich and bacony. The burger was just a burger, nothing fancy, but it works *surprisingly* well covered it soup - you definitely have to try it once, cause it's an experience, but I honestly would order it again. And I'm glad I just got the sprinkling of fried clams, cause they were also tasty, but I definitely wouldn't want a whole order of them (I'd feel sick; they were very fried). Service is nothing fancy, of course, but you don't always need fancy, just speedy, and it was certainly that (I see some recent reviews saying otherwise - not saying they're wrong, obviously, but we didn't experience anything like that when we were there). Honestly, though, even if it had been a little slower, I wouldn't have complained too much, being able to sit and chill on a patio in a nice marina just after dusk. Just wish they'd had a better craft beer selection - their beer selection is pretty mainstream, which is too bad, cause it would be pretty much the *perfect* place to chill and drink a good beer with your burger. read more

This is definitely a hidden gem. I must have driven past this play a million times growing up a navy brat in the 70s & 80s. The barge is quaint, clean, kitschy and nostalgic. The kid in me imagines Gilligan and the skipper having their last meal before sailing away and getting shipwrecked on his island. I had the double barge burger which is basically a cheeseburger island surrounded by a sea of clam chowder and some debris-like fried clams tossed on top. What a cute little place off the beaten path. This place is known for their clam chowder. Tons of clams in this chowder!! Potatoes, celery and pieces of bacon fried until the end crisp up. It's so good. It's served in a bread bowl, cup or bowl. The bowl is the size of a big latte cup. We shared the Fisherman Platter. Fried fish, fried clams, fried shrimp and fries. We ordered and extra piece of fish for $2 more so both of us can have one. The platter is more than enough to share and it was very good. Coleslaw, cocktail sauce and tartar sauce comes on the side. The prices are very reasonable. Great kick back atmosphere and the staff is so friendly. The parking lot is above the eatery. Park, then look down into the marina and you'll see it. I'm giving them 5 stars but I would say more like 4.5. These stars are for variety but for what they do is chowder. With that said we came in a Saturday for breakfast and I suggest you make it there before 11 or the cook won't scramble an egg. We got in under the wire by a few minutes and we both had their homemade chili cheese omelette. It was well made with what seemed like homemade hash browns and large rye toast. Coffee was good and our waitress hustled. Place is known for their chowder and we will eventually be back to try that. Place is literally on a barge on the water and it definitely leans. Super casual and located in the Wilmington marina (didn't know there was such a thing). Two places to eat in the Wilmington Marina. Marina Cafe (which is nicer but not necessarily better) is just a little further in. I think this place relies heavily on locals as it is off the beaten path. Give it a try. We did and we liked it. This is one of the best hidden gems in LA!! I'm originally from a small central coast beach town, so I grew up loving clam chowder, calamari, and all the classic seaside dishes you find growing up by the coast. Not only does the Chowder Barge capture the classic feel of the nautical-themed restaurants and dives I grew up with, but their food is actually top notch (and their drinks are dangerously cheap!), and the place is literally floating on the water! This is an incredibly unique and affordable restaurant, and I can honestly say they probably have the best clam chowder in LA, rivaling even the the gold standard chowder from the great Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach up north. This is hands down one of my favorite spots in LA. Pleas show them some love during this especially difficult time for them and all restaurants; let's make sure they're still around in a few months so we can all dine aboard the Chowder Barge once again! read more

We ordered steamed mussels since they were out of steamed clams (strange), as well as the fisherman's platter. Our chowder was very heavy on the bacon flavor and not enough clam flavor. Thick and creamy, tasting mostly of roux and bacon. The clam strips added a nice texture but it's mostly due to the breading. Clam strips themselves were very little clam and mostly breading. The fisherman's platter also had fried clams. The fish was cooked well but didn't have much flavor. The shrimp was ok as well. The dipping sauce helped liven up the bites. Our most memorable dish is probably the steamed mussels. Their white wine sauce is well-balanced and great to have with garlic toast. Would we come back for the chowder? Probably not. She was helpful and even though there was a small wait she was accommodating and the food was SO worth it! If you like out of the way hole-in-the-wall places, as I do, you're in luck. You've arrived. CB can be a challenge to find, on the water, surrounded by railroad tracks in an industrial area. With some tables outside on nice days, the inside is vintage and absolutely charming, with polished wood tables and floors and a central fireplace. I had a bowl of chowder, which was delicious, but different than other New England chowders I have enjoyed. Not a lot of clams, but will try their chowder with fried clams added next time. I also had the fish and chips, which were an English style. The fish was a bit over cooked, but pretty good.Fries were steakhouse style and just fine.
