We love the Coconut Restaurants and were frequent visitors of the Sac locations until our relocation. We miss the restaurants terribly! While visiting Reno for an event, we were pleasantly surprised to see a Coconut in downtown and thought, could this be affiliated? Super excited, we went in for lunch and greeted/served by Rose the Manager. We knew upon arrival it was the Coconut we loved so much. As usual, the service was quick, the food was hot, fresh, and everything we have experienced in the past. While sitting in the restaurant, we saw a couple walk in, look at the menu, and leave. I commented they have no idea what they're missing out on. We enjoyed great lunch specials of drunken noodles and green curry with chicken, the dishes did not disappoint. Best Thai food I've ever had! Hands down! The flavor was rich and distinct, the shrimp was not fishy tasting at all, chicken was tender and juicy, everything was fresh. We started with potstickers and cheese wontons. The crispy, fried, minced garlic on top of the potstickers added such an amazing flavor to them. We then had cheese wontons. Thin wontons, crisply fried with fresh cream cheese. Yum!! We ordered basil fried rice with shrimp and chicken pad Thai. I cannot say enough good things about the meal, the service, or anything else. What We Ordered: Calamari Khao Soi Noodle w/ Shrimp Yellow Curry Thai Iced Tea Beer Bill: $50ish I enjoyed the calamari. It isn't the generic out the of the box circles. They cut the squid themselves, batter it and serve it. Not oily at all. I almost never enjoy calamari, but I did here. Khao Soi Noodle with Shrimp was so good!! It is usually served with chicken. Upgrade to the shrimp and thank me later. There were so many shrimp pieces in the dish. It came out piping hot (just how I like it). The noodles at the bottom is like a chewy ramen, while on the top it is fried with a great crunch. The curry is a bit spicy with a coconut milk base. I loved everything about this dish!! This has become one of my go to restaurants when in the area. I can't wait to try more items off the menu. read more

I've been wanting to try this spot for a few weeks now, especially after reading all of the positive reviews. I give this 3 stars based on my overall experience. The spot: I arrived around 4:30pm when they were supposed to open for dinner. All of the doors were locked and the restaurant was not ready to open on time. I waited a few minutes and sat at a table outside. They finally opened closer to 4:45pm. This restaurant has a pretty decent sized patio space, our table had a broken umbrella, so it was a little awkward sitting at this table. They have a small shared parking lot with meters. I checked in through my Yelp app and received a $10 noodle special coupon. When I inquired which noodle dish I could get, the server said that the owner doesn't want to honor the coupon and needs to take it down from Yelp. She said it was a May special, but it's now August. That was pretty disappointing to see how it was handled. Even though they opened late, they still cut off happy hour at 6pm. They were not very accommodating even though they screwed up and didn't open on time. Happy Hour Menu, 4:30pm-6pm: $4 appetizers $4 draft beer $4 Merlot, Cab, & Riesling $2 rotating beer (today was Saint Archer IPA) We ordered the avocado cream cheese rolls, garlic fries, and potstickers for appetizers. Avocado Cream Cheese Rolls - basically 2 avocado egg rolls with a cream cheese filling, cut in half. Served with a sweet chili sauce. These were tasty, but the order could have had a few more extra pieces. Garlic Fries - the worst $4 you will spend here. It was a plate of crinkle cut fries sprinkled with a little bit of garlic and parmesan cheese, served with a small side of ketchup. Not seasoned with garlic like the menu description says. Unflavorful, fries were cold, and overall just terrible. This isn't what you expect an order of garlic fries to be. Potstickers - these were the best of the 3 appetizers. Perfectly cooked and very tasty. Dinner: Prices are pretty comparable to other Thai restaurants. We ordered the Drunken Noodles w/Tofu and the Gluten Free Pad Thai w/Chicken to go. When we got the final bill, I noticed that they made the Drunken Noodles Gluten Free and not the Pad Thai. Good thing I checked, because if I would have eaten gluten, I would have gotten sick. The containers weren't even marked gluten free. We told the server the mixup and it took awhile for them to fix the issue. They ended up making new dishes for us. I would suggest labeling all dishes, so the customer knows which item is gluten-free. Gluten Free Drunken Noodles w/Tofu is good. I'd eat it again. The ratio to the noodles and vegetables were great, the sauce was tasty too. Gluten Free Pad Thai w/chicken - I love a good Pad Thai, the flavors were great. It didn't taste like it was gluten free. I would definitely order this again. Avocado Yellow Curry w/chicken - The absolute best item I ordered. The servings are large, enough to share. The ingredients are abundant. The flavor is spot on, couldn't be more perfect. I loved it! Comes with a small serving of rice, which was the only negative thing about this dish. I would order extra rice with this dish. Drinks: This is a beer and wine spot. They also have seltzer options. The Happy Hour options were pretty good, but for wine drinkers, they didn't have a Chardonnay on happy hour. I was shocked to see that they had a gluten-reduced beer available, the Stone IPA was actually really good and I didn't have any reactions to my sensitivity to gluten when drinking this. Overall, the main entrees are delicious. Definitely an excellent authentic Thai option in the area. I like that they have a lot of gluten free options available. The service and how they run their business could be better. I just ran into too many issues during my first visit, however; I'd come back to see if there are improvements made. This spot is in Midtown, which is nice. We were seated right away. I only gave it 3 stars, because when we asked server if Hubby can order Pad See Ew without sauce, and salt, she could not honor the customer's food restrictions. She referred us the a "steamed" noodles, veggies and chicken, but what we had in mind was really just to stir fry plain, except salt and any sauces. She seemed she was getting irritated... so, we just left it alone. I don't get some of these restaurants... as much people have hypertension, people are still shocked when you ask for a low salt or no salt dish. They seem more worried about the flavor, but they don't realize is, this is the customer's preference or restrictions. We all still gotta eat. read more

We had read such good reviews of this place, and were excited to try it. But we were disappointed. We asked how spicy they make their food, and we were told they don't put spice into it. We asked about adding our own, and they brought us three different chili sauces to add. The food was okay, but kind of "meh" without any spices. It was hard to figure out how much spice to add on our own. The one very positive is that they are very generous with the protein they add - lots of shrimp, chicken, etc. We tried the pineapple fried rice that was recommended on here, and it was excellent. The pad Thai was okay, and had lots of shrimp, but again, needed some spice added during cooking. I think we'll try it again, but with lower expectations. read more

I have dined here twice now and I am a fan. Thai food is one of my absolute favorites and The Coconut Downtown is excellent! Almost surpassing my favorite long standing Thai restaurant in Reno. The reviews have been great so I decided to definitely try it. I've always liked the location where there are three restaurants side by side ,opposite The Pioneer Center. The restaurant is modern and clean. My second time here was during a very busy lunch and the only available seating was at the bar which wasn't as comfortable as being seated at a table. But I won't complain about that ... I am a huge fan of Curry and they offer Yellow, Penang and Red Curries. I tend to always prefer red and so that is what I went for. So to begin I ordered the Fresh roll $6.95 , a Spring style roll wrapped in the Traditional rice paper but sliced instead of the whole roll I usually see . It was beautifully presented on a long plate rolled with carrots, cucumber, tofu, cilantro and romaine lettuce . It was served with a particularly delicious Peanut Sauce. It was a great way to start the meal. Onto the Red Curry ! When it arrived it came in a bowl, it was a nice portion served with rice on the plate along side the bowl of Curry. I opted for Brown rice which was black large grains and very filling. The Red Curry was priced at $11.95 and totally worth it. The delicious bowl contained eggplant, bamboo shoots, broccoli and bell pepper in the lovely red curry coconut milk base. I could have shared this with someone it was so large, believe me It took awhile to finish, but I managed to do that. Rose, my server was attentive but rushed during this busy lunch. As promised, we went back on our last day in Reno. We tried two new dishes and reordered our fav dish at the establishment, the chicken wing appetizer. The wings were consistently good. The pad see ew was very tasty and shrimp was cooked to perfection. Spicy level 3 was still very spicy compared to level 4 of 5 during our last visit so this is not for the faint of heart. Take it with a grain of salt ... we LOVE spicy food. We also had the grilled chicken with spicy sauce but we requested for peanut sauce instead. It is similar to chicken satay, but without the stick. After reading the great reviews ! decided to go have a late lunch there. Being new to Reno, finding it was the hard part. Ordering was easy as I knew what I wanted this first time. Well. I thought I did till I saw the menu. Rose, my server, was a big help in finalizing my order. I ordered green papaya salad, medium hot; pad thai, and the curry noodle soup. Khao soi, which I had never even seen on a menu before. EVERYTHING was excellent, even if it wasn't as hot as I usually get. Their pad thai, my measuring tape for Thai restaurants, was excellent!! But that curry noodle soup was phenomenal. Addictive, actually. All portions were huge and arrived steaming hot! A cold bottle of Sing Ha beer went well with the meal. Rose packed my leftovers in leakproof containers. I had 2 more meals off them. This was one of the last Thai restaurants on my list to try. It is the furthest from my home but well worth the drive. Next time I will sit outside, weather permitting, but I will be sure to come on a day that Rose works! read more

5 stars for me!!! Absolutely delicious! We got the fresh rolls, just know they come with tofu. So if that isn't your thing just ask and they'll load it with veggies and some of the freshest herbs ever! Yum! We also got the cashew nut with chicken and it was really very good. As well as the pumpkin curry with pineapple which was a perfect level of spice and just to die for! My only wish, the chili oil left a bit to be desired as it wasn't spicy. But that's okay! We've been fortunate finding close parking each time we've gone. Let me say, ditto to all the other 5-star reviews here, but the brightest star is the Tom KHA soup. It's a Thai chicken coconut soup. We've been to every other Thai and otherwise Asian restaurant in Reno and Sparks, and no other can compare. All their dishes are above par and at reasonable prices compared to most. I don't usually find myself downtown, but after running some errands, had a hankering for Thai. The Coconut Downtown is one of few places that actually has khao soi on the menu. If you've never had it, might be worth a try. This is the second time I've been here, and once again I ordered that dish to see if it was as good as I remember. Khao Soi is a deliciously rich, creamy, slightly spicy yellow curry. It's usually served more like a soup that has more spices which makes it rich and flavorful. Anyway, was it as good the second time around ? Absolutely!! Our waitress was attentive and friendly, and the food came out quickly. We did also order the pad Thai. It too was good. My family and I came here for lunch on a Saturday. They were busy from opening and with guests already waiting outside in lone: line. The inside of the restaurant was clean, customer service was great and they were very accommodating. My little one has a peanut allergy and they made sure to help us. He ate the chicken wings and he loved every piece. This place is definitely kid friendly and that's comforting. Our favorite was definitely the Thai tea. A little on the sweet side (which my husband loved) but delicious. Service was timely, they were very efficient and answered any of questions. With so many Thai restaurants in town it can be hard to settle on a good spot however, I think The Coconut has become my new favorite! There aren't many places where I absolutely enjoy everything I order, but this is definitely the rare exception. The food was top notch, super flavorful and had excellent presentation. Their menu consists of classic Thai favorites such as Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles, as well as some special items I haven't sampled before. I had the Khao Soi, a curry noodle dish that is a Northern Thailand specialty and there was so much to love about how vibrant the flavors were and how well all the ingredients complimented each other. Of course, we had to end the meal with some Mango Sticky Rice and this was probably the best I've ever had! Their version came with coconut ice cream and it just made such an amazing dessert even better. My only complaints are that parking can be difficult to find especially when the area is busy; and it seemed like the staff weren't super well versed on the menu for example, what certain items consisted of. Lunch date with friends! We came on a Sunday so street parking was freeee :) We have a vegetarian and a pescatarian in our group, and we were sharing family style, so we ordered everything with tofu. We ordered a few appetizers but they forgot the fresh rolls, so we didn't get to try them this time. Favorite dish was definitely the Khao Soi (curry noodle soup) then the drunken noodles. The curries were good but nothing special from the other Thai places. There were a few other parties dining when we were there so service was a little slow. Uh. Maze. Ing! I've been wanting to try The Coconut Downtown for a while (years, I'm sad to admit). I don't find myself downtown as often as I used to. I meet a friend for dinner at The Coconut and have been back several times since. We went on a Friday night a little early to beat the dinner crowd. We had to problem with parking but I could see parking being tricky on a busier night. I have found that The Coconut gets busy when there is a show at the Pioneer Center. We were immediately welcomed into the restaurant. I was surprised to find their menu prices be so reasonable (especially given the portion sizes). We ordered the cream cheese won tons and Thai iced teas for an appetizer round. The won tons were good and the Thai iced teas were delightful! What really stole the show was the curries! I ordered the avocado green curry and it was perfect. It had many veggies which made it filling and the green curry sauce was a nice balance of sweet and spicy. My friend had the yellow curry which offered a depth of flavor only a true Thai kitchen can create. I came home and told my husband that I found the best Thai place in Reno! As an added bonus, the staff was so friendly and eager to help. I've been back a few times since and have sampled the curry menu and have never been disappointed. read more

Tucked away about a half mile away the casinos is this little gem and let me just say this is some of the best Thai food that I have ever had and the service was just as great! The waitress Molly and Rose went out of her way to recommend certain dishes as this was my first time dining at this establishment. It was getting a bit late and I wanted to try various dishes but settled on the Kao Soi. Absolutely phenomenal dish! The flavors were on point and just the right amount of heat.
