First time and will most likely be my last time here. Came here as a large party. You wait to be seated but need to grab your own menus at the door. There is a small shared parking lot with meter. We ordered a few dishes to try and it was mediocre. The most disappointing dish was the papaya salad dish. It was literally a salad with romaine lettuce, sliced cherry tomatoes and shredded papaya. This was definitely the first papaya salad with no chili peppers and with chopped Romain lettuces. The chicken Pad Thai was not flavorful it was just sour. Both the chicken and beef egg plants had flavor but skin of the eggplants were definitely not soft. Ended up spitting out the skin. Both meat were tender so that's a plus. Kiddos salmon curry plate was alright. Salmon looked pretty overcooked but he still enjoyed it with the curry. Both the red and avocado curry were alright. The brown rice was on the harder side. The drunken noodles was bland. Thai fried rice with chicken was okay. I'm guessing the food is tailored to the population it's serving. I will most likely not return if I'm craving for Thai food. Found my go-to Thai food in Reno!! I've been to most of the Thai places around town and this is first place that has done the curry & pad thai really well! The esthetics of the restaurant feels clean & inviting and looks like sit-down dining not take-out.The service was so friendly & portions were generous. I'd recommend everything we ordered! I like my curry on the thicker side & full of flavor where you taste the sweet & the tang, then a touch of heat. Mmmm they got that balance right. I really don't like to do this, but I need to be honest about our experience last night at the Coconut because it was not good. It is my hope to save other customers from the same poor experience we encountered. We went to this restaurant last night before a concert at the Pioneer Center like most people. We had heard good things about their Thai food and liked the prices we saw. When we walked in, we saw that it was not busy. But it was early so we didn't think much of it. We sat immediately and noticed how dirty the restaurant was. The floors had food on them as did many of the tables, and you could see their cleaning station, which was not clean, with garbage spewing out of it. It was unsanitary and made me question my choice to eat there. Then we ordered. This went fine - my dad ordered the Tom kha soup, my mom ordered the bbq chicken, and I ordered the green curry. This was fine until the server came back a few minutes later and let us know that the bbq chicken wasn't available. So my mom said she would take the praram chicken. We were told this wasn't available either. So she tried ordering the Coconut Shrimp. Also not available. Then the chicken wings. Also not available. It was kind of comical at a certain point. She finally just asked for the Tom Kha soup too since we knew that was available since we had already ordered it. If you don't have several dishes available from your menu, then you aren't stocking your restaurant very well. It was very disappointing. Then, we got our food. I don't think I've ever had such bland Thai food. It was missing salt...sour...even spice. It was so odd. All in all, we won't go back. This is in large part due to the unsanitary conditions. That's just not ok. But the lack of food options was also a big low. The owner really needs to rethink what they're doing. This wasn't the servers fault. This is management. Took my parents here for the first time for a bday dinner for my daughter. Everyone loved their food. The service was good. A small confusion on one of the dishes but they quickly fixed it. First Impression - As said "First impression is the last impression". And, My first impression of this place was not good. I went there alone and when i entered the resturant, they had a table at the entrance with bunch of menus on it. Moment i entered the resturant, the Bartender simply asked me loudly picking up food? I said no dining in. and she said you can pick one menu and sit where you want. Ambience - decent ambience. simple wooden tables with simple chairs. Not too fancy interior. When the server asked to take my order and i told her i am here for the first time and if she can give some recommendations - she is like everything is good, you can order anything. Anyways what i ordered, Basil Stir fry and Thai Iced tea. The food was served pretty quick and the food was pretty decent. I liked the food. I gave the Khao Soi another shot by eating in the restaurant... so worth it! This time I also added Cream Cheese Wontons and Fresh Rolls to share and they were so delicious. The wontons were perfectly crispy and the filling was so tasty (not just cream cheese). It was lunch time on a Monday. I had been too rushed in the morning to make my traditional sad cubicle salad, so there I was, in the office, forlorn. What could save this Monday from a total hanger meltdown?!? Spicy. Creamy. Crunchy. Noodly. Khao Soi. With tofu! I called The Coconut and put in my order to go. The lovely phone person asked my spice preference on a scale of 1-5, I said 4. That Monday morning sense of ennui needed to burn so the passions and thinking could be refueled past the mid afternoon! She said it would be ready in 15 min. It was! I walked up to the bar and picked up my food, paid and was on my way. I couldn't help but notice a lovely outside patio with bubbling fountain. I haven't had Thai food as good as at The Coconut in such a long time! It's actually quite refreshing to go somewhere that not only has options for vegans but doesn't sacrifice any of the flavor. I stumbled upon this spot online when looking for Thai restaurants in Reno that had vegan friendly options. What I found great about The Coconut is that items are clearly marked as able to be veganized right on the menu. Most times, it takes a bit of creativity from the customer and patience/understanding from the business to accommodate such requests. Here we didn't need to and I love them for it. We started with their Tom Yum Soup ($8) and it was one of the best I've had in a while. Perfectly tangy and sweet with a medley of veggies inside. I wish we had some rice to go with it because that would have made it even better. For our mains, we had their Pad See Ew ($12) and subbed out egg for red bell paper for no additional cost, and their Stir-Fried Eggplant and Veggies ($12). Wow, both dishes were terrific. The pad see ew with pepper may not be traditional but it was really delicious, and same goes for the eggplants.- cooked to softness and not overly salty either. Coming from California where Thai food prices are higher when the taste is not actually better, it was a real treat finding this place and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking delicious Thai flavors. There are two nasty bathroom keys with wooden handles hanging on a nail that one must handle in order to use the bathroom. No restaurant in 2024 should have a bathroom key that must be handled by all the employees and customers. It's a perfect way to spread a disease. If bathroom break-ins are a problem they should employ a cipher lock. Keys on a wooden stick are very Texaco toilet. read more

My wife and I used to love this place. Food was always amazing. We usually had it delivered, but it was always hot, fresh and delicious. That being said we ordered it last week and were really disappointed. I don't know if there's a new chef/cook or if someone was having an off day. The shrimp salad I ordered tasted super fishy, the dressing wasn't like it normally tasted. The Penang was more potatoes than anything and the breading on the calamari was soggy batter that seemed like it wasn't fried long enough. The Coconut Downtown is set back on Virginia, behind the monument (next to the Poke Bowl & La Familia). Like every one else, they are experiencing a staffing problem, but even with that the service was pretty quick and friendly. Although we were able to walk, there is usually plenty of parking on the side streets. They have a Happy Hour every day from 4 to 6 PM, with $4 appetizers and drinks. Check their Happy Hour menu on the window. We went for dinner before heading down the street to the Bruka Theater. Pad Thai still one of my favorites. Order your food to the degree of spiciness 1-5 ... I'm a 2 and it had a bite. There dumplings a fantastic and my daugther loves their Spicy Papaya Salad. Lots to choose from. If you love Thai, definitely give this place a try. read more

A great pre-Pioneer show dinner spot, right next door! Our first time here. As with anything down or mid-town, parking can be a challenge. There are a few metered spots in front of the location, free after 6pm and weekends. Big public lot across Virginia is your best bet...just not during working hours. It's a medium sized eatery with a large bar for drinking and eating (they only serve beer and wine...beer selection better than the wine!) Also best to make a reservation to be safe. Open and airy setup, decent space between tables. High ceilings keep the ambient noise down. We were seated right away, brought our waters and the server took our drink, app and main orders. Though there were only 2 people working the place, they kept up pretty well (other reviews cited this as hit or miss). Drinks came up and a few minutes later are apps appeared. Ordered the pot stickers and spring rolls. 6 to an order, the pot stickers were hot, decent sized and perfect mix of flavor, especially dipping in the accompanying ginger sauce. 5 to an order spring rolls were hot, crispy, not too oily (they're deep fried unlike the fresh rolls) and had mild flavor combination that hit the spot. After reading the reviews I was up for trying the Khao Soi. It a northern Thai yellow coconut curry dish with egg noodles, crispy noodles and your choice of protein. I opted for the organic chicken. Protein was plentiful and tender. The curry is amazing. You choose your spice level (I went for medium this go round). I could have just had the curry as a soup! Large portion, but still managed to power it down...that delish! If it's not on the menu (last night it wasn't), just ask...it'll become your go to, as I have not seen it on any local menus. We ordered takeout from The Coconut oil a Sunday afternoon, our first time trying their food. My boyfriend was quoted a 20 minute wait for the pickup and everything was ready on time! There were a decent amount of people there dining in and outside on the patio. We ordered the Chicken Pad Thai, Tom Kha Soup and Beef Kao Soi, all of which we've had at many other Thai restaurants in town except kao soi, so we were really excited to try it!! The kaosoi tasted authentic, I'd skip the beef next time since it was very very chewy. The Tom kha soup was super creamy and sweet, packed with onion, Tofu, and a few mushrooms. The pad Thai was my favorite, great balance, I only wish they had included a side of lime. My partner liked the kao soi the best. My sister is Gluten Free so I always try and find places she can eat when I visit from California. I gotta say, this is probably one of my favorite places in Reno! The food is freaking bomb! They do $2 beer and $4 wine! How sweet is that. We started with the spring roll and gyoza. The spring roll is really fresh and the peanut sauce is what makes it! So good! Gyoza is one of my all time favorite appetizers ESPECIALLY if it's pan fried. These were so tasty and the ginger sauce was fiiiiiire! After taking forever to decide on my entree, I ordered the black pepper stir fry with brown rice and tofu. Again, the sauce is what made it. SOOOO GOOD!! Not being an expert on Thai food, I cannot attest to its authenticity, but I can attest to it being very good. We were greeted upon entering are were given a choice of tables. Water was provided right away and out drink order taken. The mint and lemon infused water was a nice touch. They have a limited wine selection, but have a larger selection of beers available. We ordered the Chicken Saté as an appetizer. The presentation was different than I had seen before - usually Saté is thin grilled chicken strips on a skewer, but these were just the thin grilled chicken on a plate with spicy peanut sauce and cucumber salad. The chicken was nicely grilled and very tender. The peanut sauce was nice and spicy, the cucumber salad was sweet-sour. We had no trouble eating every bit. For dinner, we had Drunken Noodles and Pahram - both with chicken as the protein. Both dishes were very good and made for a very filling meal with leftovers for lunch the next day. I look forward to coming back and giving one of the curries a try. The pot stickers and spring rolls also looked good and will be worth a repeat visit. The ambiance is casual and a bit noisy. I had the Yellow Curry. It's $11.95 at lunch. This is made with yellow curry paste mixed with carrots, coconut milk, onions, and potatoes. It has a protein of your choice. Tofu makes this a good vegan friendly meal. It was mildly spicy how they made it, and it was good enough. You can get it spicier if you really want to get it. Better than many Thai places around here. It has a good wifi connection according to others. I've come here a couple of times, but it is my first making the review. I really enjoy this location, as it is not too deep into downtown, so there is a lot of parking nearby. It's very clean and bright inside and pretty quiet. The food is amazing, the curry is thick and flavorful, and I was very happy with the amount of shrimp included in the dish. The eggplant was very good as well, as it was not greasy like some other places. Service is very kind as well, as the server remembered me from the past times I've been there. My wife has been bugging me to check this place out. Today, Memorial Day, she said she wanted to go since we had no other plans. We saw they were open for lunch until 2pm and decided to go. We arrived about 12:30pm and stopped briefly at Powning Veterans Memorial Park which is right in front. As you walk up you can see the outdoor seating to the right of the entrance which also has some nice shade. We walked in and could tell it was freshly renovated. (It used to be a Wild Garlic.) There were a few other tables occupied but we were seated right away inside. Waters and menus were provided almost immediately. We decided to get an appetizer of the potstickers which we almost always do at restaurants of this type. We perused the menu and my wife chose the #19 sweet and sour with chicken. I chose the #29 drunken noodle with chicken. Our steamed chicken potstickers arrived and looked delicious. The ginger sauce on them tasted amazing as well. When our entrees arrived they too looked yummy and we dug in!  My wife really enjoyed the sweet and sour chicken and my drunken noodles were very tasty as well. We both ordered them at medium spice and next time I might order it with no spice. Maybe not, it was good! Let's just say I drank a lot of water during my meal! My wife purposely saved half of her meal so she could order one of the desserts. She decided on the fried banana with coconut ice cream. When it arrived it looked delicious and neither of us had ever had anything like this before. My wife really enjoyed both the fried bananas and the coconut ice cream and I helped her out by eating some of the ice cream as well - it was yummy! We love the Coconut Restaurants and were frequent visitors of the Sac locations until our relocation. We miss the restaurants terribly! While visiting Reno for an event, we were pleasantly surprised to see a Coconut in downtown and thought, could this be affiliated? Super excited, we went in for lunch and greeted/served by Rose the Manager. We knew upon arrival it was the Coconut we loved so much. As usual, the service was quick, the food was hot, fresh, and everything we have experienced in the past. While sitting in the restaurant, we saw a couple walk in, look at the menu, and leave. I commented they have no idea what they're missing out on. We enjoyed great lunch specials of drunken noodles and green curry with chicken, the dishes did not disappoint. Best Thai food I've ever had! Hands down! The flavor was rich and distinct, the shrimp was not fishy tasting at all, chicken was tender and juicy, everything was fresh. We started with potstickers and cheese wontons. The crispy, fried, minced garlic on top of the potstickers added such an amazing flavor to them. We then had cheese wontons. Thin wontons, crisply fried with fresh cream cheese. Yum!! We ordered basil fried rice with shrimp and chicken pad Thai. I cannot say enough good things about the meal, the service, or anything else. The coconut downtown really felt like our normal back home service, where they operated with a sense of urgency and care for their customers. The happy hour is a great deal, all appetizers are only 4$ It seemed like everyone was ordering the avocado green curry so we opted for the same. The spiciness was comfortable but just enough to taste and enjoy, and the chicken was juicy. I always get either panang or green curry at Thai restaurants so I was satisfied. Portions are good sized and I like how they offer brown rice on their dishes for a healthier choice. Insides are also very clean and comfortable with a bar close by. Between 4-6pm drinks are only 4$ and draft beers 6$ which is super cheap. The calamari is good, it's tender and they don't put too much batter on it. It also came out hot too which is good, cold fried food is a huge pet peeve, and from the looks of it they used clean oil. You can tell if oil is old when the fried food comes out dark which is not the case here. One thing I really liked about the avocado green curry is that it comes thick, I've had some green curries that were very thin before and not reduced. Yelp has an event going on this month. The Common Thread Asian Noodle Tour. This covers at least 20 different restaurants and let's them feature a Noodle dish at a special price! The Noodle Dish at The Coconut Downtown is a Curry Noodle dish. I am not well versed in Thai or Asian cuisine other than I love it and eat it more than all other styles combined. So when I say that I haven't had anything like this crispy noodle topped noodle dish, I really haven't. And that is what I am all about! New stuff to try! The dish was filling and full of chicken and just yummy. My wife ordered the panang curry and it was refreshingly light and not heavy at all. The portions were good sized too. It's always disappointing when you spend a pretty penny on something and still go home hungry. I don't think that will be a problem with the Coconut. We also ordered two Thai Teas and for dessert, the fantastic and best in its class, mango with sticky rice and coconut ice cream. To Die For. If you only have dessert once a week, make sure you save up for this one. I highly recommend it. Service was great. All the servers were friendly and checked in on us every so often. The space hasn't really been changed since the last restaurant has been there, which is not surprising since the previous restaurant was very nicely done. Will I go back? I will put it this way.
