My family was driving through NH and stopped at the Common Man for lunch after reading reviews. The location is a little confusing, if you have never been, as it sits on a main road with no lot, and the entrance is down a walkway on the side of the building. My husband actually ran in before we all got out of the car to make sure we were at the right place and it was open. We sat on the main floor which has a welcoming and cozy environment, as well as a cracker and spread bar that had a good herb spread and was especially helpful for the baby and kids while we waited. The kids also got their own paper menu with activities and crayons and could draw on the paper tablecloth as well (definitely a family place, though they do not have a place to change a baby in the bathroom). The odor in the entrance, hallway, and bathroom areas was very unpleasant, but luckily did not spread to the dining area. The food was pretty good, all 6 of us enjoyed our orders, and we also got ice cream and the ding dong cake (big!), which were delicious. The servers were friendly and attentive. I teetered between 3 and 4 stars, but the overall experience was a good one, so I settled on 4. read more

I'm told this is the original location of what is now a major New Hampshire (oxymoron) chain of dining establishments. We were told there'd be a half hour wait, so we went to the lounge upstairs. Up a spiral staircase to a spacious, warm and sprawling area with a couple levels, a bar, small stage where a guy played guitar and sang cover songs, couches and plump chairs arranged around funky tables, each loaded with games... trivial pursuit, jenga, chess, tavern puzzles, checkers and a free foosball table. What a great spot! Maybe they were ready for us faster than they said, maybe time just flew in this great spot. We proceeded to dinner. Dinner was delicious. An appetizer called "Not Quite Escargot" was mushroom caps in cheese, garlic and breadcrumbs served in an escargot dish with bits of puff pastry and bread. My gourmet mac and cheese was also nicely done. Cheddary, with breadcrumbs baked to a buttery crisp on top. My girlfriend said it was the best trout she ever had. I'm no big fish fan, but I thought it was good, too. On the down side - it was hot as hell in there. And they did screw up our drinks... royally. First, you simply cannot serve a drink called "The Cuke," which is to feature a cucumber coated in kosher salt as its centerpiece, and then just shrug off the cucumber's absence as "That's how they made it." Second, it turns out that my "Cuke" was actually served to my girlfriend and I got her drink. Since mine was supposed to be gin based and hers vodka, I'd say the drinks were kind of weak because it took a while for us to even realize something more than the cuke was missing... Nonetheless, the evening was pleasant enough that we went back upstairs with our wine after dinner where we sank into the couch, read through a view trivia questions, and thoroughly enjoyed the singer / guitar player, who had very creatively reinterpreted the covers he was doing... so much so that some sounded original. We have been going to this restaurant for almost ten years every time we go on vacation to Lake Winnie. We go because there is an open mic night on Thursday nights, and so it has become a family ritual to go every year. The staff are wonderful, the open mic is a fun neighborhood gathering where everyone is welcoming and warm. The food is good but not great. We've found over the years that is better to stick to burgers and such. Tonight my family ordered burgers and fries, Caesar salad, bacon wrapped shrimp, and lobster corn chowder. The chowder was good. The shrimp was fair. The Caesar salad was good. My husband ordered his burger well done but it came rare. I was surprised he didn't send it back but he was hungry. The French fries were very good. Although they are a little skimpy on the ketchup. Based on this experience I would have given only three stars BUT the extra star goes for the pizza. My son and I are vegan and this restaurant has nothing on the menu that is vegan. But since it's a family ritual we always go. For two years now we have ordered their homemade pizza with no cheese. It comes with diced tomatoes and garlic oil. We added mushrooms spinach and red peppers and it was GREAT. Be warned that the crust is extremely thin so we ended up ordering two pizzas where we originally thought one would suffice. But the price is more than reasonable for the pizza and it was GOOD!!!! Alas we will definitely be back next year because the open mic is fun. And we'll get our vegan pizza again. read more

The restaurant and food are good, but with strange rules. I was so tired after Ironman and decided to have a dinner with big plate of pasta with chicken to restore the energy after the race and have a good rest, but I was wrong to visit this restaurant. I was slippy and exhausted and sit on the sofa with closed eyes. After long race you cannot eat very fast, so I ate a small amount of pasta and had a rest. I repeated it many times. In 15-20 minutes the manager came to our table and said they have rules "don't sleep in the restaurant. Eat and go". I was shocked, but I didn't have time and wishes to complain. We went this past Saturday night and had a GREAT time. The food was delicious - definitely try the spinach & garlic dip for an appetizer, it's a nice spin on the spinach & artichoke you find everywhere. Totally delicious. Great bread too! I had the seafood over pasta with artichokes an tomatoes as my entree and it was delicious. The pasta was cooked to perfection, the seafood was ample and delicious. We were too full for dessert! Atmosphere was nice too, they pulled off the "country' thing with out going overboard ... not toooo many relics/knick-knacks on the walls, and the lights turned low. Nice. One of the other dining rooms had an open wood stove going. Very cozy. Another bonus - if you have to wait, the little beeper things go up to a mile. I've been here a few times now, and have had solidly good food and a good atmosphere every time. Among my favs: the mashed potato pizza (the perfect appetizer, though you may have to ask the server if the chef can make it, but it's not on the menu). It's a perfect appetizer to share. Also, the mac and cheese pizza- though if I were to choose, I'd go with the first mentioned. The bison burger has been yummy twice, as has the pot roast. They also have a way cool selection of beer, mixed drinks, and grogs (froofy alcoholic hit drinks for a cold night) The upstairs is awesome. You go up a scary windy staircase and end up in a cozy little pub with coffee tables and squishy chairs and old board games to play. Live acoustic music is pretty common too. read more

On the way to VT my boyfriend and i were starving and we came across this place via Yelp. Since we had such an awesome time that evening, I'd like to pay it forward and write a good review. Considering we were so tired from driving, we had a really special night and neither of us wanted to continue the drive and stay the night through. Dinner was great, we both got soups and an entree. They had a nice home cooked flavor... but better. The waitress was really sweet and attentive. Fun, vintage country ambiance. After dinner we went upstairs to the bar and watched a few songs by the band playing. Everyone seemed to be having a really great time. Traditional American Food taken up a notch. I've never had a bad meal at The Common Man.They make traditional comfort food dishes like mac & cheese, meatloaf, sheppard's pie, grilled fish/meat -- but they make it very, very well. I like how they put a little unique twist on the recipe - and clearly they are using quality ingredients - you can taste the difference. I would never hesitate to stop in for some delicious comfort food if I'm passing by. I think the prices are very fair considering the quality and quantity of the food. All in all it was good, everything was good, the food the service and the quirky "company store" where they sold vintage magazines and advertisements. I have eaten many times both upstairs and downstairs. The menus change regularly and there is always an interesting list of specials available. Last night, I had a roasted red pepper stuffed with curried rice and covered in Lima beans, corn, and other vegetables. I'm not a vegetarian - it just looked good on the menu. And boy was it ever. Full of flavor and a large enough portion for a whole meal. A+ I am just using last evening's meal as an excuse to heartily endorse one of my very favorite eateries. I prefer the casual pub-like atmosphere upstairs (often with live music), although the service can be a little slower than downstairs. Either way, you're likely to have a good experience. read more

I love the vibe here and have for years. The food has always been very good. Over the Memorial Day weekend we went for dinner and I was disappointed in the food (the service was excellent). The portions were small and two of us ordered the bolognese which was not a traditional version (served with polenta vs pasta), but very little meat (maybe even none at all). The Common Man Inn is so worth coming back for. The Clam Chowder is very nice. However I wish it were a little less thick. My brother rated his steak on a scale 1 through 10 a TEN!!!!!! My seafood Pappasdelle was good but the pasta a LITTLE under cooked an there were way, way to many empty bread caps. The mussels should be more fresh and tomato the same. All that for one dish. Overall it was a nice place and the restaurant and gift shop gave a rustic feeling. I'll bet the rooms are nice. Hope to spend a night there sometime. Went for an early dinner with my girlfriend because we had heard good things about the C-Man franchise. Let me start off by saying the service was 4/5 stars despite what I am going to explain about our dining experience. Our meal started with an unexplained cottage cheese and russian dressing thing, whipped garlic butter, and crackers...which is serve yourself..only reason I'm even mentioning it. After we dined on Ritz and some interesting spreads, we both got a small salad before our meals. Delicious, but then again it's lettuce, tomatoes, cukes, croutons, and dressing. We both got Peppercorn Ranch, and enjoyed our salads. Now the bad, My girlfriend ordered the "Prime" Rib which was overall, bland and not prime whatsoever. If anything it was an untrimmed "choice" ribeye, baked with a lack of seasonings. Served with house mashed red-skin potatoes and a possibly fresh vegetable medley (nothing wrong with certain frozen vegetables). She ordered medium-rare and it was really on the border of rare, not to mention 'chewy' because of the fact that it was not prime. I ordered the Filet, medium rare as well. It came topped with an interesting, broken bearnaise sauce that tasted fake (with a touch of too much tarragon). Came to me rare, ate what I could and then sent the rest back to be brought up to temp. When I received my two oz. chunk o' filet, it honestly tasted like the underside of the grill, thanks. Near the end of the meal, the manager came over and apologized which once again attributes to the overall experience. We were given white chocolate and the bill inside a "Ripley's Believe or Not" book, which we thought was neat. I really expected more from this place, and will probably not go back to this location anytime soon. Maybe 'Lago' will be worth a try. read more

After a day of hiking Mount Lafayette my friend and I could not have been happier to sit down, have a drink, and eat yummy foods. The menu was plentiful, and we both went back and forth on about 6 different choices. I finally decided upon the Smokehouse Burger, and was offered to have sweet potato fries.. completely sold and happy. My friend LOVES sweet potato fries and completely changed her order to match mine upon hearing this option. Our server was attentive, quick, and funny adhering to any requests right away. We were lucky it wasn't packed for a Saturday night, and that they didn't think we were homeless with how we probably looked having come straight from the Mountain. My parents had gone here back in the day when they attended Plymouth College, and my mom recommended this place right away... so glad I listened this time to her advice! They were good but not what was ordered. He never checked on us, so we ate them instead of waiting longer. We got the toll house cookie desert. Terrible. The pie crust makes it weird. We've been to the Ashland Common Man many times and while the service is always great and it is the original location in an antique building, it's just not our favorite Common Man. First of all, they water down the drinks. A traditional gin martini should have three things in it: Gin, Vermouth and olives. Water is not one of the ingredients. As far as I know, this is the only Common Man restaurant currently watering down their drinks. Also, the only lettuce they used in the salad I ordered was iceberg. Now, I understand that iceberg is a filler and I'm okay with restaurants using some of it, but in this day and age a high end restaurant like Common Man should be also using green leaf lettuce, romaine and mixed greens. On a recent visit we dined upstairs at the bar and the atmosphere was dingy up there and the only restroom had a bad odor and every time someone opened the door the odor was released. Not good. Anyway, I'm not saying we won't be back, but we prefer Common Man Concord and Claremont. read more

Hot cider with butterscotch rum warms your insides, along with the witty banter between bartenders and the regulars seated at the bar.
