Worst dining experience EVER actually we never got to eat and left with our lunch to go after 1 hour and 20 minutes. Reserved a Holiday luncheon for 5 members of an non profit committee to thank them for their efforts during the year. No communication from the many different wait staff who rushed by our table as we were seated near the back of the restaurant close to the kitchen. They kept say "it's coming" but alas it was not the food and I WOULD NEVER walk inside the door again. The icing on the cake was when I asked for the manager and the person who showed up was initially was not versed on the skill of listening to your customer before opening his mouth. Every so often they spin a globe and pick a new country to base the menu on and right now it's India. Our fave thing was the prawns served in a puffed naan (yep that's fried naan!). The Consulate Atlanta was absolutely horrible, our friends went to celebrate for her birthday on this past Saturday. We got there at 7:30pm and did not leave until 10:51pm dealing with Mark and the owner Douglas Hines. Not only did the food not come out all together but we got the wrong orders multiple times. When we asked for the owner to come over, he did not make it better and at some point stated that our concerns on the slow service wasn't an issue for him. As an owner, I would have expected for him to rectify the situation however he had no clue and acknowledge that Mark was overwhelmed yet offered not assistance. Hence the nightmare continued, the checks were wrong and that took them another 1.5 hour to get straightened out. Now I am still dealing with the fact that they charged my bank twice. Is this nightmare ever going to end? To the chef, the food was good but I think you would be better running the business yourself. To Doug Hines, this is not what you are good at, please seek staff that can handle multiple request and you yourself need to understand customer service. As we continued to explain to Doug our concerns, he response was he didn't care if we came back or not or wrote a review on Yelp. I couldn't believe an owner of a restaurant could respond that way. We visited the consulate for the first time for a special occasion. We heard this place was a must try in the city and were very excited about our experience. It has a very cool chic city type of ambiance inside. Everything we had was very tasty and the drinks were phenomenal. I would have rated five starts if it wasn't for our server. We were seated right away as we had reservations and were very excited to try this place. However our server made it clear the moment he came by our table it wasn't going to be a pleasure for him to serve tonight by asking us "spring or sparkling?" I was a little confused by this greeting style also the question itself, "we didn't have a choice of tap water?" Anyway, we thought he was busy and would be back with our bottled spring water($5) and properly greet us. Nope. He was extremely short the entire time, when he brought us our appetizers he asked "what's next?". We didn't know what was next so asked for more time and he didn't come back for a while. Finally when I was able to make eye contact with him he came back and asked "so what's next". So we ordered what was next. We would have at least ordered a couple more drinks and really wanted to try the pistachio cheesecake but felt like an inconvenience to our server by being there so we left. read more

Seven friends and I dined at The Consulate last eve for my birthday dinner, and we all couldn't be more pleased with the experience! This is truly a unique restaurant in Atlanta - there are so many fun things to look at! The best adjective I can use to describe the ambiance is cozy. I felt at home and comfortable. When we arrived and were waiting for the rest of the party, we had a cocktail in the living room area, which featured a fireplace and two of the most comfortable leather couches I have ever encountered. The craft cocktails do take a minute to arrive, but it is certainly worth the wait- I never drink gin and hate the taste, but I practically swooned when I tasted the El Navegador, made with Dictador Ortodoxy Gin, St.Germain Elderflower, tonic, honey water, lime and Earl Grey bitters. When the party arrived, we moved into a semi private dining room, and were introduced to our amazing server Alia. Over the next 2.5 hours, we enjoyed great food and drinks. The tapas were well proportioned and the spices and flavors were wonderful. They are cooking dishes from India during this 90-day period, and while this cuisine is typically not my favorite, I enjoyed everything that I ate. Alia was perfect- knowledgeable about everything on the menus, always available but not hovering, and just generally made the special evening seamless and fun. When the checks came, everything was already divided up perfectly, which for large parties is usually a major hassle. Had a couple of wonderful "Elixirs" and apps at the Consulate Atlanta on Saturday afternoon...Had a great time meeting "Z" and Sean behind the bar, Jackson working the floor. Apparently, they change their "themed/Visa" menu page, every 90 days - it was a China Visa when I visited - Havana Egg Roll and grilled mango octopus = delish! Ambiance, furniture and decor was very, very cool - tons of antiques and cool knickknacks on every wall and crevice - not overpowering, very classy. Upping my stars to four after having returned to The Consulate on three separate occasions since my initial visit and review. The bar service is great - these guys know their wine and cocktails! Have had some really great food from the global menus and the home menu, including the eggplant "burger". Really great flavor. As I said before, the space is really cool. The food was decent but I wish I was allowed to order enough of it. Our waiter was Jackson C (red head with handlebar mustache), who thought that he somehow knew how much food we would want for ourselves. It's not like we were adults or anything. He allowed us to order only 3 dishes at a time but took more than 30 min each time to come back to take our new orders, and then another 15-20 min for the food to come out. Our drinks came approximately 1.5 hours later. Is there a NO STAR rating! I went to celebrate a friend's birthday with 6 other ladies. The service was HORRIBLE. We got there at 7pm and didn't leave until well after 11pm. They spent an hour trying to get the bill correct. From taking the order to bill was a disaster. Mark our server should not be waiting tables. And the "owner" Douglas Hines did not make it better. Mark was condescending and brought out wrong orders and blamed it on us. Our orders were simple, in fact, 3 of the 7 were the same! Food was good, drinks were ok but SERVICE they get an "F". A group of four of us had dinner here on a Saturday night around 7pm. We were a little late for our reservation but the hostess was cool about it. Just FYI, the restaurant isn't all too visible from 10th as it sits behind the MARTA station and parking is in an office building deck on W. P'tree and 10th. Nonetheless, parking is free with validation and the total experience is top notch. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu which is a breath of fresh air, the ambience is super slick, the drinks are excelente and the food...man, that Lamb Tibs dish was just stellar...we didn't have a single dish that we wouldn't order again. I've had dinner there twice and each time the food was phenomenal!! Last night my husband and I along with another couple visited for dinner. It was Colombian cuisine. We had the burgers, the scallops, the Brussel sprouts, plantains and the duck fat fingerling potatoes!! Everything was AMAZING!!! We couldn't stop ranting and raving about how awesome our food was! We were not impressed by the food, the only thing we really enjoyed was the duck fat fingerling potato, beside that everything we ordered was just okay. Although we went on a day when there were not that many people there, the service was lacking. Our waiter was not attentive to us and kept forgetting about what we ordered, and will not check back with us. It took forever to serve anything we ordered. Went for our friends birthday. Started off fine drinks were good. Our reso was at 9 they seated us around 10. 2 min til 10:30 they decided to say kitchen closes at 10:30 you need to order now. So we did wish they would of told us that when we were seated. The sea bass needed a steak knife to cut it. The scallops were so chewy also tasted like plastic. We didn't complain about our food. Tried to order somemore drinks since the food wasn't good and they said the bar was closed. COOL. They didn't even offer our friend a bday dessert or even a candle. We were very excited when we walked in the restaurant and saw the amazing decor. The hostess was sweet and sat us quickly (we had a reservation). I loved the booth we sat in and the swanky atmosphere of the restaurant. The service, however, was worse than the average tasting food. Our server greeted us at the door, but then took 10 minutes to even bring us water. It took another 20 minutes for him to explain the concept of the restaurant and the menu. We had questions about the menu, and despite the fact that he took 40 minutes to even ask what we wanted, he was snippy when we were indecisive about a certain plate. Note, we were only indecisive because he couldn't tell us whether the ribs on the menu were beef or pork. The food was average, but I would have given the restaurant more stars based on the atmosphere had it not been for Christopher's service (or lack thereof). HOWEVER- the cocktails were amazing and the bar tender was attentive. Would recommend for drinks ONLY, sit at the bar. read more

The first time we tried to go to The Consulate it was a Wednesday night...we didn't have a reservation. We walked in the door, the restaurant was completely empty, and the hostess told us she couldn't seat us without a reservation. The aromas inside were so tantalizing and I really wanted to eat there. I walked out the door, logged into Open Table and it showed available reservations every 15 minutes from 6:30pm through close. I made a reservation for 6:45 waited until then and went back in and told the hostess I had a 6:45 reservation. The restaurant was still completely empty yet she insisted they were full and she couldn't seat us. Two weeks later I tried again. Made a 7:15 reservation and showed up at 7:03. I told the hostess (the same one as the previous occasion) I had a 7:15 reservation...she looked at me and said "Wow! You're really early, you can have a seat at the bar or in our lounge until your table is ready". There were only two tables occupied in the entire restaurant. I went to the bar and ordered a drink. It took FOREVER to get it. I had the Ramayana Cocktail. It was very good, but a bit expensive for the size. The hostess never bothered to come to the bar to tell me my table was ready and it wasn't until I'd closed my tab and went back to the hostess stand at 7:30 to ask for an update that she sat us. First we ordered drinks. Simple order...a glass of wine and a beer. Ten minutes later the wine comes out but no beer. A few minutes later the waiter came over and said the beer isn't made anymore so they don't have it and i'd need to select something else. Why didn't he know that when I ordered and why was the beer still on the menu if it's not available? Finally get drinks and ordered our food. We ordered the Brussels Sprouts, the Andhra Yellow Curry Chicken, and the Rogan Josh Skillet. The Brussels Sprouts were described by the waiter as being roasted, but didn't taste like it. They were bitter, unseasoned, and undercooked. I love Brussels Sprouts and these were AWFUL. I had the yellow curry and my partner had the rogan josh. The rogan josh was very good, but the yellow curry was awful. It had the bitter taste of too many curry leaves. I cook lots of Indian dishes at home which are typically four portions. I usually double the spices in the recipes because I like my food spicy. In all the recipes I've cooked none of them call for more than 4-6 curry leaves for the whole pot. I pulled over 10 curry leaves out of a tapas sized portion of the yellow curry. It left such a bad taste in my mouth that after a few bites I couldn't taste the Rogan Josh. The theme of the menu is a global food where every 90 days the menu rotates to a different part of the country. I think it's an epic fail. Rather than picking one thing and doing it well, the restaurant has managed to be a "jack of all trades...master of none". read more

Went to The Consulate for dinner last night for our 10 year anniversary- WONDERFUL vibe in the restaurant, great decor. Cuba is on the menu right now, with the favorites from countries past. We ordered all vegetarian dishes - every one of them was SO flavorful I can't choose a favorite ! We had the Black Bean Salad, Okra, Greek Stuffed Bell Pepper, Mushroom Empanadas, Plantains and Tumon Bay Salad. All the plates were clean! Visited The Consulate on a whim and it was an excellent choice. Ambience is great, food is delicious, and service is 5 star. We ordered beef empanadas, fingerling potatoes, Chilean sea bass, beef ribs, duck confit, and mania mushrooms. All dishes were delightful and delicious except for the ribs. The duck confit was the overall star. Will definitely return. Also, my husband unknowingly left his to-go plate on the table and to our surprise, the waiter brought it to us in the car deck. The atmosphere is lovely and the ladies at the front are very nice. However, our waiter had almost no personality. The manager stopped at nearly every table but ours. Not sure if it was because we didn't complain or if he knew we would! The food was OK. Some of the dishes were pretty good, others so so. The Diplomat burger was the best we had, and we tried 7 of the options. For a place that specializes in variety, having the burger as the best dish? The Reuben egg roll was quite tasty as well. Now for the wait times and what went wrong. The Kings Ransom, is supposedly a charcuterie plate with a choice of meats/cheeses, etc for $25, which is about average for a well put together plate like this. Where to start? It took 45 mins for it to come out! Really???? Then it had 1 choice of cheese that looked like Kroger cubed cheese. Then it had what appeared to be Boars Head turkey and prosciutto. A dime sized dollop of black caviar, that no one really wanted and almonds, fresh from their bag in the back. Red grapes that hadn't even been washed before served and a few icky pickles and olives. Also fresh from their jars (and kroger). For a place that does tapas, the time between dishes was not well timed or organized. We ordered 3 at a time. They came out willy-nilly. They were sometimes cold when supposed to be hot and vice versa. They took FOREVER to come out!! We had to ask for water more than once. The cocktails were OK, but also took forever to be delivered. We were seated so we could see the bar, it wasn't busy! Such a shame for a place that's supposedly amazing and wonderful. Very disappointed. At least we had fun with our friends, and we got to catch up with them since we waited forever for our dishes. read more

Came here for the first time looking for something close to The Fox for a show after dinner. We enjoyed all of it; service, food, decor... the menu is very unique as they rotate a portion every 3 months to a new country. We tried kale & butternut squash salad, Brussel sprouts, eggplant burger, pulled duck... we didn't have a favorite because they were all amazing. Wesley was our server he was great. Super cool spot to grab drinks or dinner. The decor here is best described as eclectic. It's a James Bond themed bar with different areas sectioned off for an intimate feel. Their menu has features that change according to the "passport" of the season. They highlight items from other countries, but have staples that stay on the menu. We shared the charcuterie plate; it was huge in terms of portion size and delicious. Pretty romantic if you are looking for a small place for a quiet dinner earlier in the evening. Later in the evening, this place turns into a spot for drinks and mingling. It's location is perfectly positioned in Midtown. It's across from Marta near 10th and tucked out of the way.
