I met up with a friend for brunch this past weekend. Went in blind kind of not knowing anything about this spot other than it's situated across the street from Benihana. Visually the place is gorgeous. Stunning. The entrance has this grand spiral staircase and upstairs are tan leather booths with large sitting chairs, paintings on brick walls. It has a very madman office lunch vibes to it feel. I did not order anything to drink. In fact, I didn't even venture to see how expensive cocktails were on the menu. Instead I just jumped straight to figuring out my meal. I went with the croque monsieur and my friend went with the steak and eggs that also came with potatoes. When the plates arrived I was amazed at how large the portions were. My sandwich literally took up half of an enormous plate. Like where do I even find slabs of bread this big? The sandwich was delicious with heaping amounts of melted cheese and bechamel that tasted divine. The salad was kind of disappointing but it was just an undressed overly salted pile of greens to be honest. That wasn't the main focal point and I doubt anyone finishes their side salad to begin with. The service was very attentive. Like maybe a smidgeon awkwardly attentive. I don't think they liked that I put my handbag on the floor but it doesn't wrap around the way too wide chair backs. They apparently have a very good pre-fixe deal for weekday lunches if one works in the area or plays hooky. For $24.95 you can get either an app or dessert plus a main course. They also have a happy hour from 3:30-6pm of $13 cocktails, $10 wine, and $7 beer as well as discounted appetizers that may be worth exploring. read more

One of my friends was craving french onion soup. We found The Consulate had it on its menu. The Consulate is a beautiful restaurant. In all my trips to NYC, I cannot believe we missed it. We arrived during the brunch hours and were quickly seated. The service was great too. Our server was attentive and polite. He offered his appetizer and dessert recommendations when we asked. We ordered the shrimp cocktail. There were three VERY large shrimp to an order. They were delicious. I also ordered the roasted maitake mushrooms which came with a flavorful aioli. It was heavenly!! My friends weren't too thrilled with mushrooms, so while they tried it, I basically got it all to myself. :) It was perfectly roasted with crispiness on the edges. I'm glad we shared the order because I would've been too full for my main course. All three of us ordered the french onion soup and it was DELICIOUS! It was perfect for a chilly day. It warmed us up in time for the theater. The soup had the right amount of cheese to bread ratio, IMO. For dessert two of us ordered the creme brûlée. Perfect way to finish brunch. Wish I'd remember to take pictures. We couldn't get a table at the last minute at the first few restaurants we tried (our bad - dinner time in midtown, serves us right). But found The Consulate on Open Table and so we decided to give it a try. Inside the vibe was awesome. We were led upstairs to what felt like a semiprivate space. Despite it being a full house, noise was fairly manageable and totally faded away once wine and cocktails showed up! Service was super attentive despite being upstairs. And the food was perfect for the occasion. I had the rib cavatelli and would not hesitate ordering it again. Loved the two-story restaurant!! Looking from outside , it had class. Decided to check it out after hearing about it's opening in Midtown. We had sat upstairs , beautiful dining room. We ordered few appetizers like Shrimp Toast and Grilled Octopus, both were great. Decided to go with the Tomahawk for 2 , asked for Medium felt like it was Medium Rare but no issues we enjoyed it. The escargots were delicious. We went for a dozen instead of half. The Shrimp Toast was good - very fresh and well-sautéed shrimps, but the bread was meh. I'd had better shrimp toasts. I stopped in here for dinner with my son while we were in town. The restaurant wasn't terribly busy and we were seated immediately. The space is elegant and feels like a good date night spot. This place truly is a hidden gem. It's a new location within midtown. Once you walk through the door, you are immediately greeted by a beautiful bar and a winding staircase that takes you to the second floor of the establishment, which has more seating. I came here, for lunch, on a random Wednesday, and I was sat immediately. Since it was midday there weren't a lot of patrons eating here at this time, but I didn't mind. It allowed for me to enjoy the space I was in. The Consulate truly spared no expense when it came to the ambiance and design. The design spews sophistication, and would honestly be a perfect date night spot. I went for a light meal, and got the salmon a la carte, paired with a lemon drop martini. The intention is to order sides with your entree, as the dishes do not come with a vegetable or a starch. For what it was and what I wanted, the portion size was perfect. I got the Octopus Carpaccio, Rabbit Tagliatelle and the Bread Pudding - all of which was delicious and well prepared. Also we were pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes, and definitely left with very full bellies. I also got a cocktail, which was nice and refreshing. In terms of service: at some point they re-filled my friend's glass of sparkling water with tap water. And it took a while for them to understand my friend's concern. That being said they ultimately did replace the glass and accommodated us accordingly. So ultimately it was resolved well. While most of the items on the Restaurant Week menu did not seem to be a part of the normal Consulate menu, I definitely left feeling very happy about the food and the quality of the chefs and staff. Walking in to an outrageously chic location with a spiral staircase cascading in the front already makes you happy to be there. The ambiance is absolutely gorgeous and everything is done with such precise detail from the bathrooms to the dining room. The food was delicious. We went for lunch and had the consulate burger which was juicy, well cooked and flavorful. The braised short rib cavatelli, was delicious. At first I thought it was going to be too runny but after one bite, I learned I was wrong. The rib was perfectly tender and the flavors were perfect in unison. My go to place when shopping in Midtown. The ambiance is really pretty, especially during the holidays. Happy hour is on weekdays and a great deal. They also have an amazing brunch on the weekends! Service is fast and friendly. I will say that the layout of the place is a bit unusual - they have most of their standard tables upstairs, so just know that if you're with someone who can't climb stairs. Our food took 25 minutes to arrive, and was lukewarm. The chicken was good, but should have been warmer. The steak frites had the smallest serving of beef I have ever seen for this dish. The fries were good. The three samples of fish tartare appetizer was a joke. $19 for an amount that could fit on one fork. They put it in little cones, otherwise it would look ridiculous, and it was tasteless. Do NOT waste your money on this sad dish. The pork rib teriyaki appetizer was decent. I had the Short Rib Cavatelli, which happens to be my favorite type of pasta since I'm a kid. I was over the moon for this dish. The short rib was juicy and had an amazing sauce. The scoop of fresh ricotta in the middle was the perfect addition. My friend had the roasted chicken which I tried and was very moist with an excellent sauce. The starters were good. The main standout here , are the steps that lead up to the dining area. They are lit up in such a way that it's difficult to see the steps. Both my guest and I almost tripped a couple of times. I think it's just a matter of 'time before an injury is sustained. While it supposedly has a French influence, the wine list by the glass was very limited on French wines. The best item for me was the French Onion Soup that was well executed. Other dishes such as a Chinese Chicken Salad fell flat and flavors were incongruent. Booked a reservation for Restaurant Week for dinner at 6pm. The venue is pretty big. We were sat upstairs and the place wasn't full at that hour. The prefix menu was for an app, entree, and dessert for 60$. The menu is slightly different than the offerings on the main dinner menu. I got the buratta, steak frites, and pana cotta. Everything was prepared well and flavors were on pointe. The portion sizes were pretty good and you will leave full. This offering was a great deal. The service here was timely, but they are very direct. One wait staff had accidently refilled my sparkling water cup with tap water. I noticed when I drank my water that it was flat and it took some time for them to understand what happened. They ultimately replaced the glass given the concerns but told us that I should have prevented them from doing so which was odd. Came to this establishment last night as a friend treated a group of us to a very nice dinner here, great experience overall. Definitely not a place I'd be able to dine at too often, as it's easily out of my price range - but I'd still gladly come back for special occasions or to treat myself. Came by at 7:00 pm on a Thursday and the place was fairly packed, but luckily we had a table to ourselves and got pretty solid service all evening (despite the waiters having their hands full). A bit hard to hear each other / had to speak loudly but that was more due to the ambience being lively and bustling than anything else. Fun atmosphere overall. One of those places with an unspoken dress code (it's nice to dress up for a fancy dinner once in a while), but not particularly stuffy or pretentious. This place has a fairly varied food menu (but not dauntingly so), with lots of great options for sea and land (and for drinks) - we split some great appetizers, including Escargot, steak & tuna tartare, crab cakes and grilled octopus, all of which fresh and tasty. I had their grilled salmon for my entree, cooked perfectly (might have needed a bit more seasoning). I'd like to try one of the steaks next time - others at my table had the roasted chicken, steak frites and other tasty mains and seemed well satisfied. Washed all of that down with a glass of wine, a craft cocktail (the Consulate Old Fashioned - pretty solid option) and a bit of Limoncello. Took us a while to call the Waiter for my last drink but again - the place was bustling, and overall our food came out pretty promptly (especially for a decently upscale establishment). Only slight downside of the evening was the couple of groups of Social Media Influencers using POWERFUL lights here and there, to show off the food and drinks they'd ordered, right next to our table and standing near the bar - kinda stood out like people on their phones in a movie theater. But that's not exactly the restaurant's fault, and it didn't stop us from enjoying a great meal here. They had nice live music upstairs throughout the evening, will have to get a seat up there next time I drop by. read more

When we ordered drinks from the bar, everything came out pretty quickly. However, after we sat down, I had to call the waitress three times to get my second drink. Food wise everything was good. The Consulate is an upscale restaurant, so please make sure that you dress accordingly to fit the beautiful ambiance. It was a girl's night outing so we were really looking forward to having a great time. I'm so glad that we chose The Consulate because they didn't disappoint when it came to the delightful experience! Arriving early for our 7:00PM reservation, we were seated upstairs in the intimate dining room. My cousin and I thought that was a great location to enjoy the evening. The lighting was perfectly balanced, the noise was not disturbing our conversation, and we agreed that this restaurant would be perfect for a date night. Our server was very polite and walked by our table frequently. We were so caught up in our conversation that he was a little hesitant to interrupt and ask us to place our orders. We ordered mussels and grilled octopus for our appetizers, and asked our waiter for a drink selection. The spicy "Malalama" tequila drinks that he suggested were divine and I really liked the spicy sugars on the rim of the glass. The first Malalama drink helped us to kickstart the night. When the appetizers arrived I couldn't wait to dive into the mussels... they looked so yummy and after having the first one I was really impressed with how well seasoned they were. I'm a gravy type of girl so I dipped up the white wine, shallots, garlic, butter sauce from the mussels with the toasted bread that it was served with!!! Now let's talk about the grilled octopus. This was my first time eating octopus so I wasn't sure if it would be a taste I liked. The octopus was fresh and really didn't taste like anything but the texture was so rubbery and hard to chew I thought it was a plastic toy I was trying to eat!!!! My cousin was very disappointed with the octopus, as she eats it often at other Mediterranean restaurants, and she made sure to discuss her dislike with the server. He stated that they blanch the octopus before grilling it, but I still didn't understand why it was so rubbery?!?! The highlight of the octopus was the sautéed cherry tomatoes and sliced mini potatoes. For our entrees we both ordered the roasted Branzino fish served with cilantro sauce and shaved fennel. This dish was delicious, and it was my first time eating Branzino so overall I enjoyed it, I just wish that the fennel was served on the side instead of on top of the fish which ended up burying it. The fish was well seasoned and roasted to perfection, overall I liked the meal. I also ordered broccolini on the side and it paired well with my fish meal. To our surprise we were served complimentary champagne with our meals... Surprise Surprise! The restaurant was not crowded so after eating we stayed and chatted it up a bit and took a few pictures standing on the epic staircase. I removed one star due to my disappointment with the octopus. This was my first time tasting octopus and I was hoping to like the dish because I love seafood, however, now I'm not sure if I'll ever try it again.
