The Consulate is an upscale restaurant, so please make sure that you dress accordingly to fit the beautiful ambiance. It was a girl's night outing so we were really looking forward to having a great time. I'm so glad that we chose The Consulate because they didn't disappoint when it came to the delightful experience! Arriving early for our 7:00PM reservation, we were seated upstairs in the intimate dining room. My cousin and I thought that was a great location to enjoy the evening. The lighting was perfectly balanced, the noise was not disturbing our conversation, and we agreed that this restaurant would be perfect for a date night. Our server was very polite and walked by our table frequently. We were so caught up in our conversation that he was a little hesitant to interrupt and ask us to place our orders. We ordered mussels and grilled octopus for our appetizers, and asked our waiter for a drink selection. The spicy "Malalama" tequila drinks that he suggested were divine and I really liked the spicy sugars on the rim of the glass. The first Malalama drink helped us to kickstart the night. When the appetizers arrived I couldn't wait to dive into the mussels... they looked so yummy and after having the first one I was really impressed with how well seasoned they were. I'm a gravy type of girl so I dipped up the white wine, shallots, garlic, butter sauce from the mussels with the toasted bread that it was served with!!! Now let's talk about the grilled octopus. This was my first time eating octopus so I wasn't sure if it would be a taste I liked. The octopus was fresh and really didn't taste like anything but the texture was so rubbery and hard to chew I thought it was a plastic toy I was trying to eat!!!! My cousin was very disappointed with the octopus, as she eats it often at other Mediterranean restaurants, and she made sure to discuss her dislike with the server. He stated that they blanch the octopus before grilling it, but I still didn't understand why it was so rubbery?!?! The highlight of the octopus was the sautéed cherry tomatoes and sliced mini potatoes. For our entrees we both ordered the roasted Branzino fish served with cilantro sauce and shaved fennel. This dish was delicious, and it was my first time eating Branzino so overall I enjoyed it, I just wish that the fennel was served on the side instead of on top of the fish which ended up burying it. The fish was well seasoned and roasted to perfection, overall I liked the meal. I also ordered broccolini on the side and it paired well with my fish meal. To our surprise we were served complimentary champagne with our meals... Surprise Surprise! The restaurant was not crowded so after eating we stayed and chatted it up a bit and took a few pictures standing on the epic staircase. I removed one star due to my disappointment with the octopus. This was my first time tasting octopus and I was hoping to like the dish because I love seafood, however, now I'm not sure if I'll ever try it again. Came in during happy hour and the bar was full so the hostess gave us a two-top high table off to the side. This was great since we didn't have a reservation. The space is chic yet cozy and classy. The upstairs is spacious as well, seems good for groups. The HH cocktails were tasty and the tuna tartare was pleasant with plenty of yuzu flavor. We shared the NY strip steak off the specials menu with sides of fingerling potatoes and grilled broccolini. A proper feast! The green peppercorn we added on the side was a nice compliment to the flavors. I'd say the only weak part were the unimaginative sides of brocc and potates. Met some friends for brunch a couple of weekend ago, and met a fellow early comer at the bar. The bartender was.... No good. He didn't even look in my direction when I sat down- was taking other's orders and paid me no mind. When my friend showed, still nothing. Please know that this is a small bar. We asked for WATER - and we still needed to wait on the water! I asked again, and he actually laughed. When he finally got around to making our bloody Mary's they were delicious. Food - 8.5/10 Good, bold flavors, but for the price, I was expecting a little more. This isn't to say the food was bad; it's definitely one of the better New American meals I've had in past several years, but maybe I'm just not the target audience. The grilled octopus and steak tartare are both excellent, with a fruity, balancing agrodolce coming with the former and no minerally taste from the latter. The wagyu flank was a surprise as well, although, unfortunately, tending towards a negative one. The taste, to me, wasn't very different from a well-marbled flank in general, and the potatoes were under-seasoned. I also had some of my family members' orders, and I thought that the Rolled Pork was good, the Gnocci was great, and the Short Rib Pasta was too salty. What was a winner, though, was the bread pudding; I loved the rehydrated dried fruit, which gave a nice texture to the whole dessert. The other dessert, however, was too sweet in my opinion. Service - 7.5/10 The service was, honestly, a little disappointing. Our glasses of water has speckles of oil and meat particles in them, and although they were quickly replaced, it put a little damper on our excitement being in the restaurant. Our servers also seemed a tad disinterested in our party the whole experience, with curt professionalism rather than friendliness coming from the staff. Ambience - 7.5/10 While it looks impressive on the inside, there may be too many tables for the second level of the restaurant to handle, as the noise level exceeded my family's comfortability, and we had to half-say-half-shout what we wanted to say to each other to have any conversation. Although this was partially attributable to a particularly loud and wined-up table, the restrooms were still a welcome respite from the din even after they left. Atmosphere - 8/10 Despite my earlier complaints about the noise, the restaurant feels both upscale and lively, making it a great place to have a date or celebratory dinner with friends. However, although I didn't find it too much of a bother, there is not a ton of light in the space, making it a little difficult to read the menu for some of my family members. Overall - A good, elevated take on American (and some not-so-American) classics, but for the price, you may be wanting a little more. read more

I dined at the Consulate Midtown tonight (a Friday night) with 6 friends. Walking in on the first floor, I saw that the bar seemed lively, and I was expecting good vibes; however, when we walked up to the second floor, I felt warm. It did not appear that the AC was running. It did not help that it was SO humid in the city today, so I was hoping to dine in a space with more air circulation. They consistently were serving the water incorrectly. Half my table wanted sparkling and the other half wanted still water, but they kept refilling drinks with the sparkling water for everyone. When we were being served drinks, the server spilled soda all down my friend's back and side. The server apologized and ran off. I had assumed he was getting a towel and supplies to clean up the mess, but several minutes passed and we only observed the server consulting another staff member about the situation. Why are they talking about what happened instead immediately cleaning up the mess? We had to draw their attention to demand a towel. Finally, a few people came over to pull out the chair to mop the floor, but they didn't bother wiping down the chair and just gave it back to my friend. We had him swap the wet chair with a chair from an empty adjacent table. Food was fine. Got two table flat breads. Three people got the steak frites and I got the filet mignon. My other friends' dishes included the ribeye, branzino, and short rib cavatelli. The filet mignon was cooked to my preferred temperature, but I wouldn't say it was the best filet I ever had. Honestly, felt a bit over priced. I think the last straw was when the bill was provided, it listed a 20% service charge. I had assumed that it was the gratuity, which I expected. But when the waiter was ringing us up separately, a friend who didn't see the bill directly asked our waiter if tip was included and he replied no. What? Then what was the 20% added to our bill? Also, I was extremely disappointed that the soda was not comped... I mean come on, they spilled a drink on a guest. There was no compensation for the inconvenience. Based on this experience, I will not be coming back nor recommending this restaurant. read more

Had dinner here while visiting NYC with a friend. The place is gorgeous and has a beautiful bar and stairs leading to the second floor. The service was excellent and quick. We ordered their brunch burger, and it was great! To start, we had their caesar salad, which we asked for with no anchovies. When it came out, the anchovies were on it, so we sent it back. It was quite obvious that the anchovies were just taken off, which was off-putting. I dislike sneaky restaurants. We ordered the burger as our main, and it was pretty good, but nothing to rave about. It came with lettuce, tomato, caramelized onions, and was topped with a fried egg on a brioche bun. I'd say the fries it came with were the best part. Meh, would probably not return. read more

Solid place! Way too expensive, but the food was good enough that I shrugged off the price tag. I had an acai bowl which was way too small for the $23 price tag, but very delicious. The tuna tartare appetizer was also delicious but so expensive. Basically, it's the best brunch I've had around the midtown area, so if I had to meet people around there, I'd suggest it. Delicious meal with an amazing cocktail! I came for dinner during Restaurant Week, but stopped by happy hour for cocktail beforehand. I'm not the biggest fan of tequila or spicy cocktails, but the Malalama cocktail (made with spicy tequila, ancho reyes, blood orange) was exquisite! The flavors all melded together perfectly and the spicy salted rim was a perfect way to round out the cocktail. My 3 course meal was wonderful. The standout for me was the tuna crudo. It was perfect! No ac, poor service, the food was very overpriced and not a great quality - an overall BAD EXPERIENCE. My steak frites were cold and overcooked and for $51, I'd expect it to be cooked correctly and taste great. It was mid at best. A server dropped a drink all over my frind (I got the backsplash) and nothing was done until our table asked for a towel. And zero compensation toward the bill. They overcharged us for water, half the table got tap, the other half got sparkling, and they over served the sparkling adding to the bottle count. Our main server was rude and rushed us to order. And lied to another friend telling them that gratuity WAS NOT included in the bill, when it absolutely was as a table of 7. I will not return and don't recommend going. Second course was the burrata salad which had strawberries and tomatoes. It was well made and flavorful. Main course was the Branzino with Broccoli which I recommend a lot. Very tasty. As a concierge for a hotel close to The Consulate, I cannot recommend more. From management to our server Javier, and the rest of the staff, hands down excellent service. Now...the food and drink. Go for the shrimp toast, steak tartare, chicken, and short rib cavatappi. The wine and cocktail seltzer great as well. Service was perfectly timed. My server was also very cheerful, charismatic, helpful and made sure to check on my friend and I throughout the night. He also offered for us to check our coats so we could dine comfortably. I ordered the short rib cavatelli as my entrée and it was honestly, one of the best dishes I've had in my entire life. The manager (I don't know how to spell his name, but I believe it's Vancho) spoke with my friend and I and surprised us with complimentary espresso martinis. While the food is good and there was plenty of it, it was the outstanding service from the bartender Nicholas that really elevated the experience. He is very friendly and polite, checked in with us regularly and was very attentive with the table service. I would say that the appetizers were the best dishes, especially the baby kale salad which was quite tasty. One good thing about their Restaurant Week menu was the variety of dishes, and unlike other restaurants, there were minimal supplemental charges. We had high hopes as we happened by The Consulate for an afternoon snack. Atmoshpere and decor is very good. However, we were very disappointed, primarily because we ordered a dozen blue point oysters, and they had no flavor at all. we ate a few just to be sure. We informed the waitress, who talked with the chef, and the manager. they said no, they were fresh today so we will not adjust the charges. we ordered a Nicoise salad only to have the waitress come back and say they had none left (at 330 in the afternoon.) Ordered a Greyhound for a drink, and it came back with orange juice, and not grapefruit juice. We ordered french fries. they were decent, but were all very small pieces. We thought nothing of it until we say the orders at tables near us, and they had long, real french fry lengths. Maybe just bad timing, but given the location and the prices, it was surprising to have this many issues for a simple snack. read more

Not recommended. On 08-09-24, I went to a restaurant on West 56th Street, The Consulate, to have lunch from the Restaurant Week menu. This means a price fixe lunch of two courses for $30. The menu said Marquez sausage. It's Merguez but the waitress corrected my pronunciation anyway. For $30, they serve an appetizer, and one sausage with mashed potatoes. This is not an adult portion for lunch. If I had ordered the mussels instead, would they have served me one mussel? I think they would. Service was non-existent. After I ate my soup, which was a nice corn soup, nobody came by to pick up the empty plate. In fact, nobody was checking my table at all. I moved my plate to the other side of my table. Eight minutes after I moved my own plate, a waiter removed the plate from the table. I know this because a) I have worked as a waitress, and b) I was on my lunch hour and kept checking my phone for the time. It was over 20 minutes after I finished the soup when I received my entree. The waiter didn't let me know it was on the way or apologize for the delay. The waitress stood across the room folding and stacking napkins. I asked the waiter to check on my food. He went into the kitchen but he never came back to me. I walked across the room to ask the waitress about my food. She said she'd check. She went into the kitchen but never came back to tell me the status. Finally, the waiter came with my lunch. I have had better service in diners. The "Marquez" sausage, one sausage and not a thick one, was just OK. The chimichurri sauce was good but not better than I've made at home. It was an interesting choice with the sausage but in the end, not an improvement on the traditional harissa. The mashed potatoes were good, smooth, but nothing special, not an improvement of the traditional frites and mayo, so the mashed potatoes seemed pretentious. When I phoned the manager the next day, he argued with me. He insisted that it took 7 minutes. Then he asked for the order number on my receipt so he could send me a report showing how long it took to make my order. Then how could he know it took 7 minutes? The manager of The Consulate is not at all diplomatic, the food isn't special, the service isn't good and the customer is always wrong. read more

Came here for preshow drinks and apps on a recent trip to New York. It was solid. I wasn't too impressed by the craft cocktail menu. They had a very extensive drink menu but it was mostly like just a lot of different booze. Like I can order a gin and tonic anywhere, I want something special! My friends and I split the grilled artichoke, the burrata, the steak tartare, the mushroom flatbread, and Brussels sprouts. Everything was good but nothing was wow. I went to a random French brunch place the following day and had a much better tartare. The service staff were all very nice but it would have been nice for the waiter to check in on us more for drink refills! Additionally, the markups on bottles of wine were just foolish.
