Stopped in late on a Saturday morning for a coffee and breakfast. Parking is street side or nearby lot. We were greeted soon after entering and told to seat ourselves. Mostly booth seating that comfortably sit four, with a couple of two seater tables. The menu is at the table and included all breakfast items. Lots of pancakes and omelettes. A few pre-designed egg plates (meat, toast, breakfast potato and so on), oatmeal and a la carte items. Our drink order was taken shortly after arriving (regular drip coffee, decaf, juice, water) and was quickly delivered. Cream is on the table. Waitress came over pretty quickly to take our order. There seem to be a few regulars who chatted with the waitress and ordered their 'usual'. This spot has been here a few years and is showing some wear but is clean and service is friendly. I wasn't impressed with my choice of breakfast sandwich. The toasted english muffin was floppy. Usually when an english muffin is toasted it gets a bit of structure but not this one. Plenty of cheese on there. The egg is not seasoned when cooked which can be a good thing. Salt and pepper on table to season. The coffee is good! This is a nice neighborhood breakfast place. I always love a place that walks around refilling your coffee without having to wave down a waitress. This is definitely more of a simple place, but if you're looking for a good breakfast that doesn't break the bank, this is what you're looking for. I had two eggs with corn beef hash, home fries and toast for about $9.75 and a bottomless cup of coffee for $2.50. The only downside is the parking. Well I am not big on breakfasts but my BF likes going out for b'fast on Sundays. I like this place. Its small, great specials, and friendly waitresses that remember you and what you order from week to week.. The Cheeseburger omelet is fantastic with loads of cheesy meat w/ onions. They will make special orders here too. I am also fond of the spicy tomato omelet. Space is a bit cool in winter and too warm in summer but oh well. Nice community homey feel to this place. UPDATE: Demoted to 4 stars. This place is starting to slip! I don't know. Sloppy service, overcooked omelette's and eggs, dry and burned home fries. The carpeting if FILTHY! Black with dirt! Every town needs a place like this. A great no nonsense Mom and Pop Diner. I want to say first off I have no idea how they keep the prices so low! The portions are HUGE! D and I took a two mile walk into town with the express goal of trying this place out as a half way point and then walk two miles back home. I had the maple nut pancake [singular as they are plate sized] and some bacon. D had a triple stack of blueberry pancakes, sausage and home fries. The home fries could have fed a family of four with no issues. They were hot, well seasoned and crispy. The bacon, and sausage were also perfectly cooked in a generous portion. D love the juicy blueberries in the pancakes. My pancake was good but I would have preferred the syrup been on the side. I realize I ordered a maple nut pancake but I have never had syrup already poured on top. The cake was good but the syrup was way too over powering. Katie was our server and she did a bang up job. She was cheerful, quick, got the orders right and was just genuinely glad to be there. She made things great for us. Don't look for anything fancy. The menus are old school, there are chips in the cups and dishwasher burn on the plates. It doesn't matter though because the place is still very clean, and you're getting exactly what one should expect from a townie diner. I'll be going back. The only real criticism I have is the bathroom. It was clean [save for the guys who still don't know how to aim after decades on this planet. It still boggles my mind but that's another story and not the fault of the restaurant] but it's in need or some refurbishment which is not expensive. The baseboard heater is rusted through and a toilet paper dispenser is needed. In this day and age of super resistant bacteria having toilet paper loose on the canister portion of the toilet is unsanitary. People like myself will tear off the first few layers just to dispose of them for such reasons. Getting a proper enclosed dispenser would save money in the long run. If the bathroom goes up to code I'd give another star. Otherwise this is still a bang up place to eat and I would highly recommend it. read more

My new favorite for Eggs Benedict, for me, for that dish Country Kitchen knocked Owl Diner off their sainted throne. It was everything that dish should be; perfectly poached, lots of fresh, thick, buttery, lemony homemade hollandaise sauce with hand carved ham (not impossibly perfectly round cookie cutter prepackaged). The home fries were decent (most reminiscent of Airport Diner in Shirley: parboiled and fried) not the rarefied unexpected gourmet treat of Fitchburg Airport Restaurant's home fries, but decent (plus the Benny out-does theirs: it's a trade). The coffee is perfectly fine (on the mild side, but some like that). Service was fine, and our waitress kept up as best she could where it was very busy. She worked hard today. read more

Typically it comes down to homefries. Undercooked? Overcooked? Overseasoned? The Country Kitchen is a strange place where the homefries aren't the worst part. Order a breakfast with scrambled eggs and half your plate will be covered by the worst scrambled eggs I've had since childhood (let's just say my mother is not a wonderful cook. Being a local - it pains me to say this, but this my least favorite diner in the area. The place needs a good cleaning. The carpet is dirty and greasy. The food used to be pretty good. Now - well, some is Ok, some is not. Eggs the last time I was in there were overdone and greasy. Home fries were ehhh at best. There are much better places around, so dont think I will be back. Solid 3.5 stars. Worth a visit if you are in the area. I wouldn't say that it was the best breakfast that I have ever had but it was good enough. I loved how you can order a small or half sized omelet and they take money off. That works great for me, I can never finish the giant omelette's that you normally get at restaurants. I ordered the cheese omelet with wheat toast and home fries. All were good but a bit on the greasy side, especially the home fries. I got my husband the bacon and cheese omelet but forgot to order a different kind of cheese rather than American. He hates American cheese so he didn't end up eating the omelet. He ate the home fries and toast though and said the same as me. Good but greasy. I saw the person preparing the toast slather butter on it which made the toast quit good but........oh, the calories.......the calories! Ugh. Pretty standard diner menu. I heard from several people who live in the area that they consider it one of the best places to go for breakfast. I ordered eggs Benedict with sausage you know I did not want anything I just wanted the egg hollandaise sauce and muffin I thought it came with a side I definitely got big beans which came in a cup but only half of a cup is filled the sauce seemed like it was in a container and had no flavor the home fries were burnt as another reviewer mentioned the same thing and I believe the griddle was probably dirty. It is too bad since I live down the street I was looking forward to having a good experience with this mom and pop breakfast joint unfortunately I was very disappointed With the food.I hate to say this but probably the worst actors Benedict I've had in my life. The Country Kitchen, later renamed Country Chicken by yours truly, had the fluffiest pancakes, the most decadent french toast, silky smooth eggs, and baked beans that make your butt cheeks quiver. This is what America was founded on. Small breakfast diners that serve large portions for jack, and close at noon. The service was impecable. David Ortiz is 2 for 23 and recommends the Country Chicken. Any friend of The Country Chicken is a friend of mine. Besides homefries, they also have baked beans or a little of each. I thought the hash was very good. Pancakes were probably a foodservice mix that tastes the same at every diner and the bacon was good quality and crisp. Homefries were made from red potatoes and ok, not as crisp as I like them.
