And if you're looking for a place to sit and relax while you eat something from the deli or drink something from the coffee bar you're in luck. The stairs leading up top to the second story has plenty of seating. And places to work on your lap top or read a book if that's your thing. Cow's End Cafe puts the "moo" in smoothie. Located at the end of Washington at Venice Beach, this two-story cafe is a local institution specializing in strong coffees, velvety smoothies, creamy shakes, and fresh juices. There are small snacks, breads, and sandwiches available, too. A Sambazon Acai Smoothie ($5.25) with Acai, Blueberries, Banana, and Apple Juice was more than just a great tasting smoothie. It was a great tasting, refreshing and fun smoothie. I loved the little bits of berry treasures in every mouthful. I can't imagine getting another smoothie at the Cow's End after trying this one. I also got a S'mores Bar from the dessert counter. It's pre-packaged and while the Marshmallows and Crumbs were sweet, it was a bit disappointing without any Chocolate at all. Upstairs is the place to hang out with your laptop or friends (isn't your laptop your only real friend anyways?). There is a large open area with tables and another big room with comfy red couches. Parking for anything in this area is a challenge, but I tend to always find a meter spot on Strongs Drive. Just remember, you can't spell smoothie without "Moo" ... and you can find some pretty yummy smoothies at The Cow's End Cafe where Marina del Rey meets Venice. read more

Before I moved to LA, I thought smoothies were generally overrated and way too expensive. The cost hasn't changed, but the smoothies here are so good! I ordered the Bora Bora smoothie and it wasn't too sweet, perfect for a long walk on the Venice Beach boardwalk! Also, the service here is awesome. What a great place! A two-story comfy playground that just happens to be a coffeehouse! Great menu of lots of drinks, sandwiches, and salad choices. It's usually busy, has an abundance of seating choices with a whole lot of people gabbing it up, writing, reading, and sipping. It's not the quietest of places, so if that's what you're looking for...stay home and drink your own damn coffee. PS. Upstairs is a bit better if you need it a little bit quieter. This place is a great refuge from the countless chain coffee houses that are takiing over the world. I'm not a hater of franchises or corporations, I'm just saying there aren't enough (IMO) of the quirky places are there should be. The Cows End though, this place has personality and feels like home, just the way you'd expect a coffee house to have--especially one located just yards from the sand of the southern most end of Venice Beach. I was there on a Sat. afternoon though evening. The parking is a nightmare but that's not the fault of the location. I think if you plan to go anywhere on the beach, you'd better expect parking to be scarce or expensive (or both). I actually found free street parking but it was a couple of blocks away...of course the weather was outstanding so I didn't mind at all. AMENITIES: Free wifi (unlimited). Large upstairs lounge area furnished with funky red (probably) faux leather. It's specifically called the "Study room." I stayed downstairs at a table by the open air "window" (there's no glass, just a big opening in the wall to sit in front of) because I liked people watching and I wanted to watch the sunset while I worked. The light breeze was nice too. And they're open until 11PM (at least on Sat. nights they are). FOOD: I had the Turkey Pasrami sandwhich (forgot it's actual name). Had pesto sauce on it. It was okay. I ate it, didn't love it. Didn't hate it. It was good sized though so hungry people will appreciate that. It also came with a side salad (simple mixed greens) I had one of the big chocolate chip cookies from their desert case. If you like your cookies crispy, I'm sure you'd love this cookies. I like mine soft so I was sad I didn't ask before I paid for it whether it was a soft cookie. DRINKS: I had only iced coffee here. What I mean by iced coffee is just that, drip brewed coffee, black, and cold. I prefer iced coffee that is brewed at (usually) double strength, then refrigerated (at lots of places I see they just brew hot coffee over ice...too weak that way, for me). The ice coffee was good and you get up to one refill for just $0.50. SERVICE: My barista was named Jason. I think he's the owner. He's very nice and even though I was there for several hours and only told him my name at the very begining of my visit, when I left he said goodbye to me and remembered my name when he said it. BOTTOM LINE: I'm definitely going back here and I'm glad it's close enough to my apartment that I can just ride my bike next time (avoiding the parking issue). read more

Wow! I have seen everything. A butt of a cow can be the name of a coffee house and no one objects! Too hippie if you ask me. I was skeptical of coming here for a board game that Nancy Y. set up a few months back because I thought there was only a few counter seats in the first floor. It was only when I realized that there are plenty of seats upstairs with a few sofa, coffee tables, and chairs do I get the hint it's a cool place. In many ways, the upstairs was like a bohemian gathering hole for all the readers, wannabe screenplay writers, to amateur coffee aficionados to all hang out and discuss about life. Yeah, that's what I thought they were doing. There is no waiter service at this place. You will need to order your coffee or blended drinks downstairs. The menu listed many concoctions of different type of coffee, juice, smoothie, and other rich flavor drinks. There is a also nice deli sections right next to the coffee counter and plenty of pastries to be found. I ordered the Banana Cow Thunder (the same drink Jenn L.'s bf also ordered). It mixed the coffee with a few fruity additives like banana and some cream to it. Very refreshing on a hot day. Coolest thing in the world... FREE WIFI !! There are a couple of drawbacks. One, the line can formed like a snake as there is really only one register or one guy taking orders at the counter. The bottlenecks of ordering and waiting for your drinks can be as bad as getting stuck on the 405 freeway going to Hollywood. The second is that the space to wait is small. It's not as big of a space as upstairs. If they can solve the problems, it will be smooth sailing. The restroom is around the corner behind the deli counter. It's a cash only place with an ATM machine close by. It's really a cool place to stop by to get a drink or just hang out on the top floor section. A lot of patrons seemed to enjoy bringing their laptops and camp out upstairs. This place totally rocks! I'm glad my friend introduced me to it because you will probably see me there more and more often! The atmosphere inside the locating is so comfortable and welcoming. The awesome part is, if you go upstairs, not only are there more seats, but there's even a room where you can study and do homework! In addition to that, there's free WiFi! You can't get any better than that! The chairs in the room are so comfortable and you have to keep reminding yourself that you are in a place of business and not someone's house, lol! It is so hearty and delicious that I will never forget a place like that again! If I were to create a café based on the city of Venice, this would be it. Anyway, I got the Latino Latte and it was to die for. My boyfriend got a black coffee, and we shared breakfast tacos. If I recall correctly, he was able to choose a special type of black coffee, which got him excited, and I think he liked it. The breakfast tacos were pretty good. They were with chicken sausage, which tasted rubbery to me, but that's just me. Otherwise, they were great. I've also had the Greek salad, which is huge and delicious. If I had all-day access to this place, I'd spend my hours working on the second floor then treating myself to a massive ice cream cone next door and eating it on the Venice beach that is just a few minutes' walk away. Ah...paradise. Internet's fast and parking sucks; but, hey, you can't beat its location. If you're lucky, you might score a metered parking spot out front for $2 per 2 hrs. Otherwise, it's possible to bike here given its close location to the bike rental and bike path across the street. Now onto the options: coffeeeeee. On a previous bike ride my friend eluded to me they have great coffee. I'm not a coffee drinker myself but I figure that if it served great coffee they'd also server great hot chocolate. Went in, super friendly dude took our drink order, paid, and got it quick. I just got a regular mocha, which wasn't too bad. Tried a bit of my friend's smoothie. Refreshing, but a little on the sweet side. I decided to go upstairs to have a look around and there are all sorts of sofa, chairs, and tables for people to relax. We decided to stick around for a bit just to people watch. Seems like many locals prefer Cow's End, while right across at Starbucks are more of the tourists. I stopped by Cow's End for a coffee break during my biking trip at the Santa Monica Pier area. Found the mocha au lait on the menu and decided to try it out, since it seemed uncommon on coffeehouse menus I've been to. It was handcrafted nicely. Unfortunately, the barista did not ask me what size I wanted and immediately proceeded to prepare the largest size possible. He later apologized afterward for his rookie mistake and charged me for a large size instead. The au lait was good although a little too much whipped cream was applied during the preparation. I think Cow's End is a good place to sit upstairs and relax. You basically pay for the environment, rather than the food or drinks (from what I saw, the food was nothing spectacular but passable in quality). Service is just mediocre. I think 5-10 people were lining up for coffee and there was only one very slow (and inefficient) barista available in the entire shop. read more

I know this photo isn't the best, but I wanted to share. I'm actually kind of mad at The Cows End, for ruining Mendocino Farms for me! They used to have the best Caprese sandwich, but after trying this one....OMG! It blows them away! While I was in line, there was at least 20 other people ordering, and waiting, and now I see why! The portion size is huge, the ingredients are fresh and delicious, and they have a great selection of sandwiches and salads (breakfast too, but I didn't look at that). We come here for their non-dairy smoothies! They're the best in town, so natural! We have tried a bunch: their Mango Tango is very good, the Sunset Beach is OK, love their Sun Splash and my favorite is Razzle Dazzle Koa. All great! Sure, they have great pastries, good coffee selection, yummy sandwiches and salads, but their smoothies make us keep coming back. The service is good, inside they have some upstairs seating, the bathrooms on the ground level. Cow's End is so close to the beach! It's great to seat outside, enjoy the local life, see the surfers passing by or go inside and feel like you're on some island in the Carribean, cooling off underneath the huge fans. We need more cafes like this on the Westside - great drinks, free wi-fi, and plenty of room to work. I'd give it five stars alone for their spiced chai latte (note that they offer several varieties of chai, and I can't vouch for any of the others) - perfectly sweet (i.e., not too sweet) and spicy. And, they have almond milk, which makes someone like me who doesn't do dairy or soy a very happy gal. Yes, the service is a bit slow, but this is partially due to location. The staff there have always been friendly, so it's at least nice to deal with a friendly person once you make it to the head of the line. read more

I've been here before, and had forgotten how good the sandwiches are. The shakes and juices were great as well, with a ton of variety. My friends and I all got sandwiches and shakes or drinks and everyone thought it tasted really good. The stars that are missing are because they messed up a lot of the orders. Granted, it was a pretty long line, and they were very busy, but I ordered a white chocolate shake and got a chocolate shake, and a Triple Club Sandwich which comes with bacon, but the bacon was missing. They corrected everything, but it took time and I was approaching quickly approaching hangry. Most of the time, these things don't bother me, but the reason I ordered the sandwich was for the bacon, and the difference between a chocolate shake and a white chocolate shake is huge. Otherwise, great location and a great place for some casual food. It seems like a big place, yet feels a bit cramped inside, so if you can, take advantage of the outdoor seating. Cow's End is one of Marina Del Rey's little gems with plenty of personality to satisfy tourists and locals alike. You will find public metered parking spots right in front of the café, but I'm always able to find parking in the residential areas next to the stores. This is probably the only area in LA that won't charge or tow you for leaving your car parked all day, so I advise you to MILK it :) Cash only! You could use the in-house ATM, but that'll set you back another $2. Be prepared to wait in line in the morning and around lunch time, but this naturally shifts sporadically throughout the day. Also, WiFi is available to customers; just ask one of the workers for the password. I urge you to try the Miracle Greens smoothie (which comes with a shot of Macro Greens, Green Apples, Fresh Basil, Avocados, and Apple juice) for around $7-8. Extremely satisfying and fresh, not too sweet, just the right amount of tang from the green apples & luscious creaminess thanks to the avocado, while the basil lends to your taste buds the herbaceous kick that ties it all together so wonderfully. If I'm craving coffee, I'll always go for their regular latte with almond milk (rice and soy milks are also available for $.50 extra). Consistent flavor and absolutely delicious every time. They're also well-known for their $8 Sambozan Acai bowls, which are topped with granola and bananas. Filling and scrumptious. Happy eating! read more
