On a hot August night (Neil Diamond fans, you know the reference), my wife and I met another couple in Riviera Village, and The Craftsman was the destination of choice. Apparently, everyone else in the South Bay had the same idea because the place was absolutely humming. Parking can sometimes be a challenge, just be patient. Fortunately, we had reservations and were quickly seated in a roomy table tucked away in the back corner. It turned out to be prime real estate: enough privacy for conversation, but still a great vantage point to take in the entire restaurant. The patio out front might be even better, though, if you're into people-watching. Catalina Avenue on a Friday night offers no shortage of entertainment. But for our group, this table was perfect. The interior has a warm, industrial feel, exposed brick, dark wood, metal accents, garage-style doors, and televisions scattered throughout. Oddly, the Dodgers game wasn't on. Maybe they don't get SportsNet LA. I never bothered to ask because the conversation at our table was far more enjoyable. Let's address the elephant in the room: Friday-night service. The place was packed, and our server was clearly running a marathon. He's usually stationed behind the bar, sports a sleeve of tattoos, looks super fit, and carries a permanent smile. He worked hard all evening, but there were some significant stretches where my Ikasu Ikasu West Coast IPA ($11) sat empty with no rescue in sight. A man can only stare sadly at an empty pint glass for so long. We started with the poutine fries, crispy fries loaded with gravy, skirt steak, mornay sauce, Gruyère, and green onions. They were outstanding and disappeared so quickly that I remembered to take a photo only after the massacre had already occurred, see my picture, LOL. Our server redeemed himself with his entrée recommendation: The Philly. Thinly sliced ribeye, grilled onions, sweet and hot peppers, house sauce, all piled into a sesame roll. It was fantastic, messy, savory, and exactly what you want from a cheesesteak. My wife paired a Harmonia Mango Wheat ($11) with the Blue Cheese Avocado Burger ($20), a hefty seven-ounce burger topped with melted blue cheese, grilled onions, avocado, applewood bacon, and arugula. She was a happy camper. Our friends split the same burger and also ordered the hummus appetizer, adding filet mignon on top. Excellent call, I snuck a few bites! To their credit, at the end of the evening our server came back to the table, apologized for the pacing, and made amends with a complimentary Crafted Cookie: a warm chocolate-chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream. At the end of the day, restaurants are about more than perfect timing and topped-off beers. They're about sharing stories, laughing with friends, and breaking bread with people you enjoy being around. Came in today on Saturday, 5/23/26. I've been here a few times before, but this was my wife's first visit since I've had nothing but positive experiences here and wanted her to check it out. Yet again, The Craftsman did not disappoint. Mykel (the owner) was onsite and even remembered me when I walked in -- a true sign of great ownership and hospitality. I introduced him to my wife, and we decided to sit at the bar. Holly and Julia took great care of us. Both were personable, attentive, and completely on point throughout our visit. We tried the queso dip with chorizo, zucchini fritters, and the dry rub wings -- every single item was delicious. Hats off to the chef. [[HIGHLIGHT]]You really can't beat the vibe here. This business is located in a very accessible downtown strip of the city. Plenty of parking some within walking distance. Food and service were great. We were seated immediately upon entering and our order was taken as well. The beef "Dino" rib was great. The brisket and pork belly burnt ends were also super good. Their BBQ is prepared Austin-style, i.e., with a simple dry rub and served dry with a side of sauce. I loved the creamed corn side, as well as the baked beans, potato salad, and cornbread. In turn, I've been back for the "Philly" breakfast burrito (grilled and sliced ribeye with grilled onions, sweet peppers, tater tots, and scrambled eggs ... delicious), avocado toast, sausage platter (with a very interesting mustard sauce), zucchini fritters, salted pretzel sticks (which are Bavarian style with a nice chewy middle and served with an addictive beer cheese dip), 1000 layer potato, and poutine fries (which was served very hot, which kept the fries crispy even though covered with the poutine gravy). Have enjoyed every dish. Bottom Line: Great gastropub with a good selection on beers and wine, and delicious food. Update: Stopped by and ordered chicken wings ... very, very good. The chicken wings are not on the menu, so you have to ask for them. They were dry rubbed in Old Bay, accompanied with a side of blue cheese dressing, and served piping hot. We were blown away with the kindness of the employees at this establishment We were looking for a dinner place at 9pm on a Wednesday night and walked in. We asked the smiling bartender if they were closing and he said they were still open for drinks. We said thank you and walked out and looked for an open spot up the street. When we found ourselves out of luck, we turned around to walk back to our car and before we arrived at our car, the smiling bartender went out of his way to let us know that the their kitchen could stay open if we'd like to have some dinner. We were more than happy to try this new place (to us), especially since this gentleman went out of his way to try to help a couple looking for a place to have dinner. We ordered the arugula parm salad and the Philly sandwich. What a perfect combo. The flavors were delicious and the dressing of the salad was light yet somewhat hearty. The textures and flavors of the salad ingredients were a perfect blend of a lightly shaved parmesan, on top of arugula mixed with toasted nuts, crunchy prosciutto and ripe strawberries. The Philly steak sandwich was also delicious. The beef was well seasoned and every bite had just the right amount of melted cheese. On top of the taste of the food, the employees (Mike'l, Fred and another gentleman whose name we didn't catch) treated us as if we were the most important customers in the room and not a burden as so many restaurants would have if we walked in at 8:55. This is my family and my go to place now. We have consistently found things we like and as like many families sometimes it's hard to find a place we all like. They have really nice people working there, I really like the decor and will take pictures next time. It's not super big, just enough for the riviera. We all like their charcuterie board. So that is always ordered. We are usually pretty hungry when we go so we always add an additional order of the toast. Maybe they can add a few more pieces. I think it comes with 5-6. They board is a pretty good size with 3 meats, 3 cheeses, and few more surprises I won't share. Both my daughter and I love their salmon, grilled with a good helping of broccolini and cous cous. Pretty good portion. My husband loved their margarita flatbread, I had a bite and the mozzarella was good! They also have a pretty decent selection of drinks. This time I didn't want a full plated meal so I got a side steak with their chimichuri sauce. Perfect size and cooked. I couldn't finish so I took it home and ate it with my daughter's left over cous cous. I am so glad we have another choice vs their neighbor across the street. Crostinis, 3 diff cheeses, 3 diff meats, candied walnuts, cornichons, fig jam and even dark chocolate- very well balanced in my opinion. For the oysters- we had the Misty Points from Virginia. They were def my kinda oysters! Medium sized, sweet and "robust". They came with fresh horseradish, a tangy mignonette and a slightly sweet cocktail sauce. A combo of all of that and lemon juice~ *chef's kiss* Got a bottle of the Westside Chardonnay for 25% off. It was buttery yet crisp, just the way I like it! I will definitely be back! This bar is in the program along with 40 others all around LA. We planned a whole afternoon of bar hopping using the pass and wanted to go to the craftsman last to get beer and food. New place in the village. Don't go right now , give them time to sort out their business because it's currently a bit chaotic. Go in a few months to try it Came by at 11 and their "all day " food offer actually starts only at 12... so ... ok ...as Breakfast goes to 12 it's no lunch menu either so.... Not having the fundamentals down in the competitive environment of riviera is harder and makes initial impressions poor. So, how to judge ? The manager was good enough to comp some danishes to apologize for the chaos. Pastries- apparently delivered every other day. Honestly, average. 3 star at best Philly burrito: Quite good. I'd put this as a 4 star. The burritos are quite large and gently pan grilled. The hot sauce on the side is very tasty , spicy but not overwhelmingly so I wish I could have tried lunch but my desire to sit around for an hour was seriously lacking. It has promise. I'll try again and , hopefully, they'll have their (stuff) together.
