What a treat to sit in probably one of the oldest public dining rooms in all of New Jersey! From many accounts I've heard from staff, it's also one of the most haunted as well! A perfect choice for our Halloween night visit to colonial Cranbury NJ! The supernatural is what bought us here and the service and atmosphere is what will bring us back! Food wasn't the star of this trip but everyone's meal was decent and we left satisfied. French onion soup, and my steak over salad wasn't bad, and the two burgers my family ate looked enormous and well made. The liquor store second story dining area is the spectral hot spot, the whole liquor store used to be an event space but perhaps it's the vocal inhabitants up there that chased out one of the staff working there, they ended up leaving and going home for the w the Ken's it shook up them up so much! That was told to me directly, there's many more stories online! Will return! Would love if the Inn is braced the history and the haunting more! I have to say I was hesitant about visiting here due to a 3 star rating. I read some of the reviews and decided that there were either 5 star or 1 star reviews, which in my experience, has been an indication it is okay. We entered through the liquor store and browsed the wine thinking it was BYOB at the restaurant. We were informed that there was a full bar in the restaurant. As usual, we decided to sit at the bar. The bartender took some time to attend to us but it was busy. There was a nice regular patron sitting a couple seats away from us, who gave us some history about the place and informed us his daughter works there. When the bartender took our order, there was a lack of emotion/ personality. Our food arrived not terribly long after we ordered but I was waiting for the bartender to stop by and check on us so I could ask for hot sauce. She did not come by for a good 10-15 minutes. I ordered the veggie burger with bleu cheese and it was so good! I chose a salad for my side and it was pretty decent in size and flavor. We ordered the pirogies for an appetizer and they were not good. The gentleman who was chatting with us was trying to be helpful and cleared all the glasses on the surrounding high tops and the bartender became upset with him. I mean I understood where she was coming from but she could have approached him in a different manner. It was really busy so I get it. To finish, we had the pistachio gelato and that was really good! I doubt we will be in this particular area of Jersey again but if we do, we plan to visit the Inn again and possibly sit in the dining room. read more

We came on a Sunday for brunch, 5 of us total. The restaurant smelled strongly of disinfectant. The empty dining room should've been our first warning. The pristine exterior didn't match the interior, which looked like a dining room fallen from grace. Our server was attentive and did his best but the food wasn't worth the price and didn't taste freshly prepared. This is a Lovely restaurant dating to the American Revolution. This place went through renovation over last couple of years and is under new ownership now. Back part of the place is a liquor store now. Neighborhood bar but not a dive. Great rustic atmosphere. Wine on tap and Icarus on tap. Food is great! The inside walls are wood and several plates perched on shelves all around the dinning room as well as the dim lights add a touch of warmth to the restaurant's atmosphere. Nice menu. Good service. They've been serving food to travelers from this location since the damn 1600s! I love old / historic pubs, so for that alone, they get a rave review from me. Deep wine list & ALOT of beer on tap - 24 ! On an almost 90-deg day, the beers were very cold, & very fresh tasting. Very courteous & helpful staff. Lunch menu is American pub-style food, but an above-average quality. Portion sizes were also good - DEF not stingy. The worst thing a restaurant can possibly do, IMHO, is to decrease their portion sizes in an effort to cut costs. This is an instant way to lose me as a customer. B:t inflation, & every other excuse people have for not going out as much these days, the majority of restaurants are struggling to stay afloat. It's a miracle someone has chosen to keep this place open & pour their heart & soul into this historical landmark. We tried ALOT of dishes, & also got to-go food for the homies that could not make it, & everything was on point - crab cakes, wings, Greek salad (was AWESOME), Reuben sandwich, Caesar salad - even the chicken quesadilla was really good. Service and food were horrible. The Berkshire Pork chop was deep fried and came out like shoe leather. I almost lost $1,000 winning lottery ticket. I bought two lottery tickets at the liquor store, had dinner, and on my way out the clerk said I'd won $1,000. He gave me a claim receipt and a ticket back. At the Lottery Office, they told me the ticket I brought was a loser--the winning ticket might be still at the liquor store. I raced back, furious. The manager searched, called the clerk, and finally found it stuffed in a bag under the machine. If I hadn't gone back, that money would've vanished. In a change from our normal family practice, we decided to have Thanksgiving dinner at The Cranbury Inn. We had an absolutely outstanding experience, and that was in large part due to Tate, our amazing server. We should have went to Tavern on the Lake tonight to join my other friends rather than come here. Very disappointed! We had a fun Sunday brunch at the Inn. It still has its charm and historical feel with all the things posted on the walls and colonial furnishings. The bar area seems to be having a good time watching a soccer match, while the restaurant was quiet and great for conversation. Service was good and the food cooked to order. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. We had a reservation, but on this particular Sunday it wasn't really necessary. After brunch we went into the adjoining liquor store just to see what they had for selections and wow it was amazing. So large with a seating area upstairs, which I might assume is used for events or tastings. This is the first liquor store been in that had a roaring fireplace. If you are in the area it is well worth a stop to enjoy the food, comfort and history. read more

We were driving east through the area on the NJT and decided to stop here for a early dinner to let the Fairfield County traffic get ahead of us. Easy on and off. The village is very historic and quaint. The Inn doesn't have rooms but the serve breakfast lund and dinner plus they have a great bar with good service. We ordered dinner entries since we were pretty hungry. I ordered the skirt steak with sweet potato fries. The skirt steak is marinated in a chimichurri sauce. It was done to a perfect medium rare and very tender. My travel partner ordered the soup and a entree off of the Octoberfest menu. Both were fantastic. read more

If you're looking to switch it up for dining and go to a place with some history dating back to the 1750s, then head on over to The Cranbury Inn in the heart of Historic Cranbury. There is quite a long and descriptive history of the place on their website if you're interested in that sort of thing, including mentions of visits from Albert Einstein, visits from foreign dignitaries, and the use the place as a filming location of the 1994 movie "IQ" as well. All history aside, the property has been updated over the years and ownership has changed hands many times in an effort to make it successful as Cranbury isn't exactly considered a hub of foot traffic or activity. Current owners have made quite the effort to update the menus and modernize the bar area. The past ratings have been pretty abysmal, but I have heard decent things of late, so figured I'd meet up with friends to judge for myself. We happened to visit on a Tuesday night when it was fairly busy as it was karaoke night and they also had a Tuesday burger special running. We started off with truffle fries and mozzarella sticks. The truffle fries (3.5/5) were of decent quality with just the right amount of truffle oil. The mozzarella sticks (3.5/5) were of the frozen variety, but better than ones you find at most restaurants as they had a flavorful and higher quality breading. For meals, we each went with the burger special...the burgers (3.5/5) were all tasty and prepared as requested. Some of us felt that they were a little bit dry, but still above average overall, and a decent meal experience. The accompanying onion rings (3/5) were just ok, and a little bit oily, so would probably go with fries next time. I like that gave you a choice of several beers with the burger special, and also a let you choose between onion rings and fries, as most places hit you with a petty upcharge for onion rings. Service (4.5/5) was great as our waitress and several staff members we interacted with were all pleasant and friendly, and made us feel like valued guests. Although some may find the wood paneling in the main dining room as old, I found it and the pictures of presidents up on the wall as adding to the overall ambiance (4/5) given the history of the place. We all agreed that although none of the food was overly impressive, it was all solid enough that we'd return to The Cranbury Inn as it's a good alternative to other similar restaurant and chain options in the area, with reasonable prices. The Cranbury Inn has been renovated. The new bar is a nice addition to downtown Cranbury. I've been here a few times now for both happy hour as well as lunch, and dinner. The staff has been friendly and service has been acceptable. The food overall is average. I've tried a variety of items off the menu. The Seared Ahi tuna appetizer is very good and we've ordered that a several times. The burgers are acceptable, but pasta dishes not so great. Although, my turkey burger this go around was very dry and overcooked. I would recommend staying away from the Flatbread. It's more like a crisp tortilla with a sprinkle of cheese and sauce. George and Martha Washington walk into a sports bar and boy was it loud. The recently renovated Cranbury Inn in picturesque Cranbury, NJ is a true enigma. On the one hand there's the Inn's colonial heritage that is oozing from every weathered wood plank and then there's a revived bar area that's as loud as a musket misfire next to your ear. I was left wondering whether George or Martha had any FanDuel money riding on the Jets/Eagles game blaring from the bar in the next room. The food? Actually quite good. Our braised duck and pork chops were done nicely, accompanied by a salad and complimentary bread, and wonder of wonders, no credit surcharge (they really do belong to the 18th century.) We were very pleased. Four stars that might have been a five... just don't come on an NFL Sunday. George and Martha have tinnitus, so they could care less. read more

It's fun and casual yet, also upscale and nice at the same time. There's a bit of sadness with this review of this historic restaurant. Attended weddings and other family meals here. My wife's family has been a fixture in Cranbury Main Street so we recognize the significance of this establishment. Simply put the service was horrendous, starting from initial drinks, very delayed entrees to 1-2 of our group of 4 and took 15 minutes to pay our check. We were ignored most of the time and staff would not make eye contact with us when we needed service. The food was decent. I hope management takes some major steps to improve the very poor level of service for a fairly expensive menu they offer. Teddys diner nearby offered better service. read more

Let me preference this review by saying that we have been to the Cranberry Inn many times over the last 15 years under both the old and new ownership. However, this time was absolutely the worst. We were there with another couple celebrating two birthdays. First, we were seating outside the main dining area as requested due to The Cranberry Inn having booked a large party of 70 people at the last minute according to management. We were seated and had to wait about 15 minutes before we even had a waiter come over to the table to take our drink order. Everything seemed to take overly long. Our food order wasn't taken until almost 25 minutes after we had been seated. We all ordered soup, which would have been fine, except all four soups were lukewarm to cold. By the time, we had been served our entrees we had been there almost 1-1/2 hours. Two persons in our party ordered prime rib, which is normally very good. However, once again the meals were lukewarm. Management offered us desserts and coffee or tea on the house, which we accepted. The desserts were fine, but the coffee was cold. Mind you our waiter Matt tried to make the best of a bad situation. This was by no means his fault. Management failed all of their patrons on this night. Needless, to say we were all very disappointed. Maybe we were in the wrong restaurant at the wrong time. We ordered food for pick up. For Appetizer, we ordered Calamari - it was crispy on the outside but tender on the inside. Yummy!! For entrees, Scallops - sumptuous with side of linguine. Crab cakes - 2 large pieces and had no fillings! All crabs! Pork medallion was cooked to perfection! Salmon was so good it was devour in minutes. The big portions are big so you won't go hungry!! Every person who worked there stopped and asked us if we need anything. The bar was full of energy and had a very relaxed chilled. We can't wait to come back and dine in! Brunch today was horrible. It took over an hour to get our food. When it came it was very disappointing. My French toast was two pieced of sliced bread, cold and hard. It may have been frozen and just put in a toaster. Any diner in the area would have been much better and half the price. The chef and manager should have been embarrassed to serve it to anyone! I did complain so they took it off the bill. I guess I ended up paying what it was worth. The manager never even came to speaker to me! I would have left zero stars but that wasn't an option. We stumbled upon this restaurant during a visit to the in-laws and what a happy accident! Nice quaint atmosphere in what was once a historic Inn from the 1700's and now it functions solely as a restaurant. We weren't super hungry after a big lunch, so we opted for a light dinner of soups and appetizers. But what really made the night was our amazing server, Raegan - she was awesome! Friendly, personable, genuinely hilarious and a great server! She brought such great energy to our table and made the whole experience that much better. There was live music in the bar area (hello, Friday night vibes!), which made things a bit loud. We'll definitely be coming back next time we're in town to try more of the menu - hopefully on a quieter night. I hope Raegan is still working there when we do! read more

Stopped in for a beer, the bar is awesome and has an awesome ambiance... it has the feel of a classic inn but it is properly modernized with a couple big TVs and a beautiful new bar top. Draft beer selection is curated to perfection... something for everyone! I had short rib tacos that will absolutely bring me back... super fresh ingredients and seasons to perfection.
