I only try to only offer constructive criticism so here I go.... Every employee needs to quit and find a different line of work and they need close this place tonight. So this restaurant is a train wreck. Lots of red flags as we got there but we powered through for some dumb reason. 1st another family got up left as we got there and they had no menus or glasses in front of them. That's not a positive omen for a good time. 2nd is apparently every restaurant in Port Townsend is a seat yourself place (without grabbing a menu so you at least you don't have something to look at) where they promptly take a week to greet you or notice you're there. The Cup carried on this proud PT tradition. So we made the group decision to try it out since no one else in PT serves actual breakfast instead of Starbucks style coffee shops with pastries. Wife wanted pancakes and the kid wanted eggs. So we sat and waited over 15 minutes (without menus) before being acknowledged. Three different employees met us at various parts in our journey. 1 for water/silverware (said she would be back to take orders and never did), 1 for menus and 1 who would eventually take our orders. It took over 20 more minutes to get orders taken. She did say it would take a little long but what we got was a unsolicited fasting. The good news is a couple came in well after us with a dog to the inside area and not the patio (which I'm fairly certain is illegal in Washington) and their dog got food before my 7 year old. I know you're thinking I'm anti-dog, but I'm not. I'm anti-dog INSIDE a crowded restaurant. And this wasn't a service dog, just a run of the mill pet. The best part is our waitress took the time to pet the dog and showed more interest in the dog than our family. And in my long wait I was able to be an amateur Heath inspector and googled the laws and it does say restaurant staff CANNOT pet animals at any place of the restaurant. So that's scrumptious. 44 plus minutes now and my pregnant wife and kid got decaf coffee and orange juice after others got their drinks that are sitting around. Each other table got there 15-20 minutes after us. 50 minutes in and three grownups who came in 20 minutes after us got similar ordered food. The good news is my 7 year old and pregnant wife are still without food. 1 hour in and we are out. Left cash for the coffee and OJ and bounced. They teased us with food from another table. Never refilled drinks. Never checked on us. Just the arrogance of knowing they are trapping tourists. But they did rush after us and apologized and promised to do better in the future.... just kidding. No one said a word to us and I'm sure our food is almost ready now 9 hours later. This place was a disaster. McDonalds next door was 10 times better. read more

The waitress was good. The water tasted OK. Those are the only good things about our visit. I ordered clam strips and fries. The clam strips were the little pieces of clam meat, more breading than clam. Easy to overcook, which is how they came. The fries tasted like the salt shaker lid fell off during plating. My companion ordered clam chowder and a side of fries. The waitress suggested one of their specialities, clam fries. "Like poutine, but with clam chowder instead of gravy". Yeah, not really. Yes, there were fries, and yes there was a little clam chowder. But instead of cheese curds they used a little cheddar cheese. Then they put about 3/4 cup of chopped raw red onion all over the top. We have no idea how good their chowder is. All we could taste or smell was raw red onion. They did at least take the clam fries off the bill. So I guess that's another plus for them. read more

Stopped for lunch after hiking around Fort Warden. Menu read ask about chowder fries. I wasn't disappointed. They are hand cut fries cover with their homemade clam chowder, then topped with cheese and placed under broiler. Finshed with diced onion. Asked if they could substitute the chowder fries for the chips in the fish and chips. The server replied the menu is like an ingredients list. They would be able to do just about anything we wanted. The cod was hand batter, light and flakey. I snuck a bite of the Dungeness crab benedict. The crab was cooked great with a slight taste of the ocean. Enjoyed a great meal at a very reasonable price. SAD SAD STORY! The Cup was such a treasure -- virtually an institution in Port Townsend -- that we patiently and graciously waited through the year-plus of no Thursday nights all-you-can-eat fish (attributed by the owners to the loss of the fryer) and then through the now-you-see-it/now-you don't reformulation of its core identity after the close of the Rusty Anchor downtown. And we rejoiced at the resumption of the Thursday night feasts. Well sad story indeed. There is absolutely nothing to rejoice about the Thursday night fish offerings, and much to regret and recollect with frustration and irritation. To begin, what the Cup is serving now on Thursday nights under its "all you can eat fish banner" bears no resemblance whatsoever to the very fine fried fish that was their stock in trade for so many years before the fryer-caused hiatus. WHAT YOU GET NOW IS HARD-CRUSTED, DRY, SEMI-WARM, JUICELESS FROZEN FISH FINGERS, ALMOST BUT NOT QUITE AS TASTY AS WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT at a bus station counter or grade school cafeteria. Literally inedible and at a steep price even were it edible. It defies belief that anyone associated with The Cup has themselves tasted what they are now serving on Thursday nights. YECCHH! I complained immediately and was told by the waitress that this particular "kind" of fish is only served on Thursday nights and because of time constraints. NONSENSE. And lying about it doest make the situation any better. There were not even four tables occupied when we were there (I may be the last in town to have discovered just how wretched is the new version of Cup fish and chips), and no one --no one-- was asking for seconds. Or ever will. It breaks my heart that local townspeople would make this kind of craven business decision. That they should so casually and so recklessly undermine their years-in-the-making reputation and legitimacy as a thriving local business is just a lesson in cynicism. I asked our waitress why, at the time of our orders, it was not revealed that the new fish is frozen fingers in a hard crust instead of the batter-dipped fresh filets that we had enjoyed for so many years. No answer on that one, of course. It may also to be useful to note that the chowder, which used to be the best in town, has spiraled downhill at a record pace. Very large chunks of potato are now 80% of what you find in your gown and good luck with hoping for anything hotter than lukewarm. No outside forces did this to The Cup. Arrived this morning & several tables were open. We found a table inside & waited to be served. Three servers were working. After 10 minutes being ignored we found our own menus. A server brought us water & told us someone would help us. But not her? 10 minutes later we ordered. 30 minutes later after seeing several other guests who arrived after us order, eat & leave, we still are waiting. When I finally asked someone to check on our order they said it was still in line but not yet started. The cup is my favorite breakfast spot in Port Townsend. Busy, slow, or to go, the hash is always tasty and crisped up the way I like it. I love the main server. She seems to like coming to work every day, is patient with tourists, and greets her regulars by name. Stopped in with the family for lunch after the ferry. We weren't very clear on where to eat in Port Townsend, but saw the giant crab on the building and figured it had to be good! The restaurant itself is modest. Nothing fancy. There is outdoor seating for those who desire it. All four of us went with the breakfast option. Nothing wrong with the lunch menu though - plenty of tasty looking options. I had the corned beef hash. If you prefer the dog food variety out of the can - go somewhere else. This is the real deal ladies and gentlemen! Yukon Gold potatoes, peppers, onions and slow roasted brisket. Yummy! It comes paired with two eggs to order and toast. My eggs over medium were PERFECTLY cooked. Just right on the runny yolk, nothing crispy on the eggs. Sourdough toast - and homemade raspberry jam. The jam was delicious. Dungeness Benedict and Bacon Avocado Benedict we're also selected at the table. The Cup has their own twist on hollandaise sauce and it is filed out in generous portions. The family didn't lick the plates clean (that would be rude), but a spoon was used to get the majority of it into the mouth. The standard fare of pancakes and eggs was also well executed. Service. Executed with a smile. We were between rushes. You could tell they had been busy, but the staff still had energy and remained polite and attentive throughout our dining experience. Pricing. On par with what I'm used to in the PNW. Would I eat heat again? Absolutely! I might even make a special trip just for that CBH!!! read more

Delicious! I was hankering for breakfast and wanted to hit one of my favorites, Hudson Point Cafe, but they were closed. My sister and I drove around for a bit and settled on The Cup which offers all-day breakfast. Sold! We met Russ, the owner, and sat in their outdoor seating area with an amazing fireplace next to us. The food was THE BOMB! I ordered the Spicy Scramble with hash browns (they're more like small cubed breakfast potatoes but so dang good) and my sister ordered the Pane d'Amore Challah Bread French Toast. OMG. Both were absolutely delish. We sat and talked with Russ, the owner, who was super personable and just a delight to talk to. I'm from LA where the food scene is amazing, so I was super impressed with our meals. My sister lives in the PNW, so she's going to make The Cup her go-to food spot from now on when she's driving through Port Townsend. The Cup continues to disappoint for breakfast, food hasn't improved much over years. I appreciate they employ developmentally disabled (I think). This particular visit was strange though, the guitar player in the corner picked some scales and tunes out randomly. He would start a tune but leave it unfinished for more random picking. The service was very good, with a cheerful attentive waitress. The belgium waffle was good and had fresh strawberries, but the blueberries were frozen ("fresh fruit" is extra). It did come with real butter, too, and heated syrup. Coffee is described as some sort of fancy fresh brew, but even though it took awhile to arrive, it was clear it had been sitting for way too long before it made it to our cups. At $3.25 per cup, I really expected something good. The omelets themselves would probably have been good, but the blackish old grease used to fry them in was very off putting and lead to digestive upset. Had the kitchen used something other than old grease on the grill, the food would have been much, much better. Until the kitchen cleans up its act, I would stick to food items not cooked on the grill. read more

My husband and I just left after eating at The Cup. I was dying for breakfast and they're the only place in town that serves breakfast later than 11:30 during the week, so we went in spite of the bad Yelp reviews. It's really cute from the outside, and the inside dining room isn't anything special, but looked clean. We sat outside on their huge patio with our dogs. Our server came out in an acceptable amount of time; however, not sure if she looked or not, but from inside she would have been able to see that we had been getting our dogs situated and had just sat down when she asked if we were ready to order. I didn't think anything of it at first, but now I know that was the first red flag about her lack of care toward us as customers. We eventually placed our order, and as we waited had a brief conversation about how cute the spot is, the server seems pleasant enough, the menu is good, and gee, why are there so many bad reviews? I did notice that our server didn't offer us water for our dogs (and in hindsight I realize she didn't acknowledge the existence of two big dogs at the table); yet, the other server that was taking care of patio customers came over and was so sweet and friendly, and she offered to get us a bowl of water for them. She came out with a dog bowl of water, so it's clearly something they do on the regular, just not our server - at least not today, for us. Our food came out and it looked and smelled amazing! And it was WRONG. I ordered green onions on my omelet, and I got red onions. Not good for someone with dietary restrictions who has to substitute green onions/scallions for regular onions. My husband ordered his eggs sunny side up and got scrambled. How does any server worth being called a server even bring that to the table? We ordered whipped cream on our waffle and no whipped cream. Not the end of the world, and far from uncommon. My husband didn't feel like dealing with it so he ate his eggs. I brought my plate in, because she didn't come out to check if everything was okay, and told her that my husband ordered sunny side up eggs and got scrambled (but he's eating them so no need to redo) and that I had asked for green onions, but they made it with red onions. Her response: "I said green onions." So I had to say again, "Okay, but these aren't green onions." So she took the plate from me and said, "Okay, I'll get that fixed for you." And I said, "And my husband got scrambled instead of sunny side up." Which she again ignored. I then sat for 15 minutes and watched everyone around us get their food, as I waited for my food and some sort of acknowledgement of the screw ups. In an establishment that cares about their customers, it would normally be handled with apologies, a redo of the orders very quickly and often some sort of comp. Well, none of the above ever happened and we couldn't get out of there fast enough. I wish the other server had taken care of us - she seemed to care about everyone on the patio. She's the only one that gave us water refills, fortunately, since our "server" ignored our empty glasses and request for more. The kitchen and our "server" need a lot of work. We won't be back until that Yelp score goes way up. If you're looking for breakfast during the week, get to Blue Moose Cafe before 11am. read more

Take all the negative reviews for this place with a grain of salt! We found this place while hunting for a dog friendly breakfast spot - we camp at Fort Worden every Labor Day weekend and wanted to venture into town. I was nervous after seeing all the reviews and we walked in with minimal expectations - and were more than impressed with every facet of this incredible establishment. The place was relatively busy for a Friday morning, but the "seat yourself" atmosphere led us to a nice spot on the outdoor patio (fear not, we didn't take the dog inside the restaurant). Our server, Rhonda, came out within moments and greeted us and our dog, and was kind, made good conversation. She took our drink order and was back promptly (with said drinks) for our food order. Our food came out within 15 minutes (their bacon and avocado Benedict is a HIGH recommendation). Our entire experience here lasted less than an hour, but it was wonderful. A few other patrons joined us at separate tables on the patio, and Rhonda served them all as well - with the same friendly, efficient and attentive manner that we received. The table next to us ordered shortly after we did and their food was also served quickly. We've been coming to PT annually for over 15 years and our experience here reinforced the atmosphere of this wonderful town and all the reasons we continue to return.
