This is a great place for my boys and I. They love the confetti cupcakes and I love trying the different flavors they rotate every 4 weeks. I'm pretty new to the place and the drive from IL is worth it. I have tried the tuxedo, I'm not a fan of Dark Chocolate so that one wasn't for me. They Strawberries and Creme, Triple Key Lime and Grasshopper are the best. I'm was ever a fan of butter creme, but I love theirs. We get excellent service every time we go. Not super impressed with The Cup's cupcakes. There was nothing extraordinary about the red velvet. The cake was average and the cream cheese icing was not thick enough. I also tried the Double Decker (a sandwich made of two oatmeal chocolate chip cookies and vanilla icing). It was pretty good but I wish the cookies would have been thicker and more chewy. this was the first cupcake place i visited in STL. i am in search for a good cupcake bakery for my daughter's upcoming b-day. the staff was really nice and there was a large selection of cupcakes and other baked goods. i got the small sized (smaller than regular but bigger than the mini cupcakes i am used to) cupcakes. we tried red velvet, classic vanilla, oreo, and strawberry. four of the small cupcakes cost $10. i liked the oreo one the best, which is odd because my go to is usually the vanilla cupcake. i liked red velvet, strawberry next and the vanilla least. i was not very crazy about the cupcakes. i have had very good cupcakes in chicago and also charleston. the frosting was a little too sweet for me and the cupcake batter also didn't have the taste i like. anyway, staff was very friendly and helpful. read more

Wow. Ok so a bit of a preface. I've been in St. Louis for the past 4 weeks for work staying next door to here at the AC Marriott (check it out). Locals have been mentioning this place to me and so has the hotel staff. One night I'm at the hotel bar and a lady who grew up in St. Louis, but now lives away, was back in town and was raving about their Gooey Butter Cake. She even had some in her room and brought me down a piece! I died and went to heaven. It was so good. I'd never had anything like it. The bartender said I had to try their cupcakes. I went the next day and got a cookie dough cupcake and when I tell you I almost screamed out loud. I am not a baked desserts kind of person. A Reese's peanut butter cup maybe one a year will tie me over, and that's probably why I never stopped by this place til my LAST week in town, but wow, that cupcake was it. Go here. Everything looks amazing. I can only speak for the gooey butter cake and cookie dough cupcake but all the cupcakes looked phenomenal. The location was perfect. The staff was so friendly. Oh how disappointed I was in you today. I did like my cupcake, I just didn't want to eat it and I will tell you why. I came in after getting a fab haircut from upstairs and there was a lady with a boxer in the restaurant. (Even an in and out dogs inside a restaurant where you have food is kinda gross and I LOVE pets!) The dog jumped its front paws on your counter. The server even petted the dog and proceeded to wait on me, touch my cupcake, and box it to go. Maybe I am just being super picky but I don't think I will come here again. Coooooookie sandwich I crave you now! Next time you go to The Cup, do not overlook the delicious items on display that are, in fact, not cupcakes...like the Double Decker!! Since discovering this oatmeal chocolate chip cookie sandwich with icing (either vanilla or chocolate) in the middle, I have not been able to stop thinking about it. I'm sure I will start dreaming about it soon. The cookies are bigger than my hand and are (IMHO) perfection. And the icing is the perfect addition to make it a sugar coma-inducing dessert (or meal). Before the Double Decker discovery, I could [almost] always fend of the forces of The Cup drawing me in as I walked by. Now, I'm not sure if that'll ever be possible again. Not only was this place open later on a Friday, which for some reason surprised me, I then had the most amazing cupcake from here. I couldn't decide between the mocha cappuccino cupcake and the gold rush, so I got the peanut butter cup one. Dark chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream icing and crushed peanut butter cups on top. When I took it out of the box, I was surprised to find it weighed as much as a small rock, but then I ate it and was surprised to find that it was the most delicious and moist cupcake I've ever had!! My husband got an oatmeal cookie sandwich with a layer of buttercream in between the cookies. Also amazing. In the end, I ate the whole cupcake with a big glass of milk and fell asleep immediately. Despite having a name that sounds like protective gear that goes next to a peen, The Cup is a pretty heavenly spot. It's so good, that I won't even make crude jokes about icing and the aforementioned peen. Instead, I'll share a story. Once upon a time, a gorgeous young lass skipped through the CWE to the Paul Mitchell Academy. On her way, she smelled the most delightful aromas - vanilla, raspberry, cinnamon and more. "Hmmm," she thought. "I should follow that scent since I have a bloodhound's nose and all, but I'm already running late for my appointment. Maybe another time." Seven hours later (her hair = torture), she emerged from the salon and discovered that the delicious scents still hung in the air. Walking through the alley, she realized that they came from a quaint little shop which, she saw though the large windows, sold huge cupcakes. Her tummy rumbled, and she headed inside. She had found her happy place. Golden cake with pink raspberry icing. Dark chocolate cake with green mint icing. Cinnamon swirl cake with plenty of cinnamon crumb on top. The lass preferred pie and ice cream for dessert when possible, but oh how she smiled that day. She bought four delicious confections for about $3 each to bring home to her boyfriend to share. But... oh my... by the time she arrived at his place via Metrolink, there were only two cakes left. What could have happened to the other two cakes that were in the box? Anyway, I visited The Cup a while ago when my cupcake craving was out of control and Sweet Art was closed. I tried the Red Velvet cupcake as well as the Double Chocolate cupcake. Both were delicious! Moist, fluffy cake, rich icing, and the perfect portion size! I LOVED that they weren't ridiculously huge like some other cupcake shops in town (*coughJILLYScough*). And I have one thing to say..... Dear Cup, where have you been all my life? Your cupcakes are A M A Z I N G. The store is tucked around the corner, off Maryland Plaza. Sheer panic set into my heart as Siri giving directions said that we had arrived at our location and I could see no CUP!! But, a sharp cut around the corner and there she was. With a halo glowing overhead. THE CUP!! Actually, this review is also for the store and service. We excitedly skipped inside. The people that work here are very sweet and friendly. They did not seem to care that we pressed our little faces up against the glass in an effort to carefully examine and memorized all the names of these new frosted little friends complete with descriptions. After much debate, the choice was made. We were going to have the Italian Cream!!! Coconut cream cheese vanilla cake with cream cheese filling, topped with coconut and crushed walnuts. A glass of non-fat milk and we were transported to a sweet and creamy place! Oh, BTW, the store itself is so cute. Clean, tidy, a place for everything and everything in it's place. Loved the little chairs with the modern twist back. The tiny little tables. The interior design. Everything says sweet here. Back to the cupcakes. They are extraordinary here. Great flavor, a little bigger than everyone else's. The frosting is super creamy. And some of them are cream filled. Each cuppy cake is obviously created with love. You can't make a cupcake like these if you don't have the love. Needless to say, we had them box up some Summer Crush to go. The Cup is such a fun place to stop in the evening for dessert! They did such a great job at setting this place up like a coffee shop but instead of coffee you get scrumptious cupcakes! Oh, did I mention...you can get Kaldis coffee here, too? Win, win! I tried the Pumpkin and The Fools Gold. Both were good but I would recommend the Pumpkin. It's temporary and amazing/unique. YUM! After my dinner at Liluma, I had a hankering for something sweet and have always thought The Cup looked like a cute little shop. After walking around and digesting my meal, I went in for the kill and decided on the mocha cappuccino cupcake. Even though it was a dark chocolate cake, it was light and airy. The espresso butter cream was divine on top of the cake too...and the cherry on top (or in the case a chocolate covered espresso bean) made it complete! As I was walking out I noticed a sign explaining that on the 2nd Monday of every month, 10% of their profits are donated to a local charity which is a nice touch and gives you an excuse to go next month! read more

Ah, The Cupcakery. Not The Cup - It will always be The Cupcakery to me, if only because I love to use the word as an accusation ("I've had enough of your cupcakery!"). Oh yeah, the review. The cupcakes are fantastic. I've never been disappointed. Peanut Butter Cup is my standby, but last time I came in, I tried a Mocha Cappuccino cupcake. Holy cupcaking Christ. Dark chocolate cake, espresso buttercream icing, and a chocolate covered espresso bean. New favorite. One complaint, however: There is nowhere near enough seating in this place. Cupcakes lend themselves well to take-out, but the last few times I've been to The Cup, my girlfriend and I have wanted to stay, have a cup of coffee, and kill some time. We've been disappointed, though, because the sparse seating fills up quickly. Moreover, the last time I was there, more than half of the seats were occupied by coats and purses, not people, which I thought the staff should have discouraged. With the more-accessible Crepes, Etc. and Coffee Cartel serving great desserts of their own just down the block, The Cup may want to think about being more accommodating. read more

Three cupcakes today; Pumpkin Spice, Peanut Butter and Red Velvet. I will admit all three had great flavor, with the Pumpkin Spice leading the way. However, even though they all had great flavor, they all lacked moistness. All three cupcakes were extremely dry. If one were dry and the other two were moist, I'd kept them at 4 Stars. When all three end up being a dry cake, they lose a star. Thank God, for a cold glass of milk. read more

I lived in St. Louis for several years, but I've since moved away. As expected, as time has passed, I've forgotten about many of the places I ate at in St. Louis. The Cup is the exception to this rule, because whenever I think of cupcakes, it is the first place that comes to mind (trust me, I've tried a lot of cupcakes), and I often long for one of their delicious red velvet cupcakes. From the moment you walk in and see the smiling employees making cupcakes, and smell the cakes baking, you know that this place has one purpose, and that is to sell pure, unadulterated, gluttonous, sugary, happiness. And it is something they do to perfection. You see, for me, this is the ultimate cupcake. My biggest complaint of most cupcake places is the absurd richness and sheer amount of frosting they often provide atop a somewhat insubstantial cake. The Cup overcomes this in two ways: 1) They have huge cakes, so the ratio of frosting to cake is just right and 2) the frostings (especially the cream cheese based ones) manage to avoid being too absurdly sweet. Beyond this, the Cup has perfect cakes- they are never crumbly or dry, and they always have that just-right soft texture. It's a combination of expert preparation and freshness (I have never had a stale or even remotely dry cupcake here, but I've experienced that sorrow at other shops, including Sprinkles, the supposed holy grail of cupcakes). I have even found that the packaging and size of the cupcakes at the Cup makes eating them easier. it's amazing. The red velvet and carrot cake are my favorites, and both come with my favorite cream cheese frosting. To be honest, I've loved all of the cupcakes I've tried, and the seasonal ones are usually quite inventive and delicious. They do an excellent job with the classic vanilla and chocolate cakes, as well as the slightly more inventive flavors (the pumpkin themed and maple cupcakes were phenomenal as well). To finish off your cupcake, I would opt for a glass of milk, or some of their fantastic espresso-based coffees, which are a reasonably good deal at around $3 (plus, I know at least one of the employees used to work as a barista for Kaldis, and she knows coffee!!). read more

Sweet, sweet victory! I am a man who loves a good cupcake. Saint Louis has a couple of great places to find this delicious treat. People of Soulard can walk down to Sweet Divine and something wonderful, but when hanging in the CWE, it's all about The Cup. And why shouldn't it be? There's no need to compare/contrast these two establishments. In fact, both places are great! The Cup has planted its roots deep into the StL, now with multiple locations, but the CWE location has been around the longest. It's easy to spread your wings when you provide quality bakery goods and service. Cupcakes range from the 3-4 dollar range, with the "specialty" cakes a little more expensive, but the regular cupcakes are more than worth the price. The "Classic" flavors are not too abrasive: red velvet, peanut butter cup, double chocolate, confetti, and a few others. However, the limited batches can get pretty creative for those who crave something more out there! Altogether, I've yet to have a cupcake that didn't rock! One downside is the actually placement on the street. The Cup's CWE location sits on kind of alley, or at least an inactive street. During the day, it's really not a big deal, but the door isn't visible from Maryland Plaza. Nonetheless, I love The Cup! Great cupcakes and service! read more

I LOVE CAKE. Really, I love it and I don't bake, so I am always looking for a way to satisfy my chocolate cake craving with a moist, delicious, fluffy cake. Most chocolate cake I've eaten has been dry and pasty. I was referred to the Cakery (original home of the cupcake baker, Erika) by a colleague of mine who had The Cakery for her wedding. I didn't make a special trip to try the cake, but as luck would have it, on a frosty cold and snowy St. Patrick's day morning, I walked by the Cakery and bought myself my very first Cakewich. Yes, a sandwhich made of cake, stuck together (on this occasion) with minty green buttercream (tis the season). And I fell in love. Since then, I have hired the Cakery to do my birthday cakes, cupcakes (before the Cupcakery opened) and cookies. I am not a fan of the vanilla cake, they use almond extract in it and to me, leaves an interesting after taste that I am not a fan of. My favorite, of course is the chocolate, followed closely by the Red Velvet. My favorite seasonal cupcake is the Carrot Cake Cupcake, followed closely by the pumpkin cupcake. I also like the lemon drop and the strawberry cupcake, which they use fresh strawberries in the buttercream AND the cake. A friend of mine is Vegan and the Cakery made her Birthday cake for her vegan style, and it was yum. For those of us that enjoy the richness of buttery, buttercream icing, this is your place! I love that they've expanded their space. I am so happy that her business has grown from her kitchen, to now MULTIPLE cupcake locations. A MUST GO!!!! If you aren't a fan of the sweets, go with someone who is and enjoy a cup of coffee, or espresso drink. read more

As a fan of cupcakes and as a world traveler I have never had a better cupcake than the ones I get from The Cup. I used to think that Crumbs bakeshop was the bomb when it came to Cup Cake mastery. Boy was I wrong. I have never eaten a cupcake here that I thought was terrible or anything other than delicious. Sometimes they can be a little sweet for my taste but I mean c'mon, I am voluntarily eating cupcakes! Everyone who works here is always so friendly, patient and helpful. I can't believe the amount of cupcakes being produced in the back room at the Cupcakery considering how nasty these things were. I ended up ripping the bottoms off my cupcakes just to get the icing:cake ratio a little more palatable. The lack of frosting wouldn't be such a bad thing if it weren't for the bland, dry cake. The chocolate frosting had a funky flavor that didn't even resemble chocolate. The best part about the peanut butter cupcake I had was the pre-made Reese's peanut butter cups chopped up on top. I went with my boyfriend, and both of us threw away an uneaten half of each cupcake because they just weren't worth it. (Especially sad considering the high prices.) The sandwich cookie was decent, but it was way overpriced. Don't waste your time here, go to Sweet Art in Tower Grove. read more

The Cup offers some amazing combinations while keeping things simple. The cupcakes here are the perfect size, and tastefully decorated. The icing is sweet, but not overly so. The cakes are moist and full of flavor.I think my favorite is the Red Velvet which is amazing, however the Peanut Butter Cup also has top honors and reminds me of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup but better. Prices are very reasonable here too so makes celebating a special event even better with a sampler of several cupcakes a great option! I don't think I have ever had a bad cupcake here, so I don't think you can go wrong with anything you order. read more

The Cup was the perfect place for an impromptu date day. Its not very big at all, however when you walk in, you notice its very cute, warm and smells delish. The cupcakes are all lined up on platters behind a glass wall that makes you want to try every single one. Having never been here before, hubby and I each chose a flavor - his Lemon Drop, mine Peanut Butter Cup - to share. They gave us them in boxes in case we didn't finish and we settled in to one of the cute little tables scattered around. One bite and I was in heaven! They are rich, so be prepared. Hubby took the liberty of finishing mine when it became too much. They have different ones for the seasons, holidays, etc, so I hope to go back when I hear that they have a new one out. If you have a craving for sweets, want to explore the Central West End (which I had never been to before either), this should be on your list to check out! read more
