Today I had lunch at The Dead Fish. As I entered the restaurant, we were greeted warmly and asked if we would like a window seat. I was delighted because we had an incredible view of the water. The restaurant is decorated beautifully and their outdoor ground have gorgeous bushes are in full bloom. Our lunch was so delicious and their staff is amazing. I loved the view we had at The Dead Fish. Our busboy who filled our waters were great. My friends and I ordered a variety of orders. My friend and I shared the seafood platter. It was delicious. However, the clam chowder wasn't really much of a traditional chowder. It was a bit runny like soup and the crab melt wasn't toasted or melty. Our server also seemed annoyed with his job. We recently got to visit this establishment while accompanying friends. We were pleasantly surprised. Despite the rainy and cold weather, we elected to sit outside on the patio for a view of the bay. Warm and cozy enough. My wife and I like to share so ordered the Crab cakes, and the Combo platter. We paired with a Clam Up cocktail each. All delectable and delicious although the platter had significantly more mussels than anything else. We had the Crunch cake for dessert. All in all, this was $116. Been around here all mylife and I finally got to try this spot. Heard alot of good things so I had high expectations. Overall wasn't satisfied especially with the service, so I'll go ahead and start with that. Our waiter barely checked in on us even tho he would walk by a few times, if we needed something we had to get his attention. Other staff played their role but I felt they could've budged in and check in on us as well. But it is what it is. Now the food, calamari was alright. A little too rubbery if a texture for me. Clam chowder, the consistency of the texture needed to be a little thicker, too watery consistency. The cioppino was good, not the best but it was good. The prime rib was good as well. We celebrated my wife's birthday on a Sunday afternoon. We had an evening reservation but we called for an earlier time. They were able to seat us for during lunch time which was nice. They had outdoor dining and they were spaced about 6 feet from each other. Some of their tables are inside some vinyl dividers which seemed to have better protection. They also had heaters for this kind of weather. As for their food, all were good. For appetizers, we had Epi Bread, cup of clam chowder and Calamari. For our meal, we had the seafood combo which came with shrimp, mussels and crab on a hot skillet, a lite cut of the prime rib and filet mignon. My kids liked the filet mignon. Meat was soft, cooked medium. The creamed spinach and mashed potatoes were good. Seasoned just right. Service was good and attentive but would have been nice to have been made aware that they charge for the Epi bread. I don't remember if they were free before. It's cheap so it wasn't a big deal. I just don't like seeing charges I'm not aware of. Parking wasn't a problem considering they have limited seating. One thing my wife noticed was they had a couple people dining inside the restaurant. Valentine's night was a joke. We made a reservation 3 weeks in advance. There was a line of 50+ people outside in the cold, waiting to be seated. After an hour we finally got our table. Ended up paying for drinks and leaving. Bruschetta was awful, bread was soggy, and tomato pieces were a size of half of finger. No flavor at all. Came to the death fish to celebrate a birthday, made a reservation ahead of time so we were seated as soon as we got there. We started off with oysters, pretty small and sandy, also seemed like they were just tossed on the plate. For a drink I got the flipper which was just a strawberry cream smoothie but tasty none the less. The food was flavorful, the ciopinno had plenty of shellfish and seafood mixed in and wasn't too spicy, the prime rib was cooked medium well and the potatoes were nice and buttery, the collared greens very creamy. The fish and pasta was also tasty but didn't have any wow moments. For dessert we got the lemon tart which was decent but also nothing to jump up and down about. Have been here a number of times. Love the setting, but the food overall is sub-par. Crab cakes were not fresh and overly fried. Arugula salad was very salty & too much dressing on it; the Spicy Bass dish was not spicy, nor flavorful and small pieces of potato/sweet potato, etc were baked almost to extinction. The Dead Fish Cioppino Stew had the SAME sauce as the Spicy Bass, and was not spicy, and pretty meager portions of sea food in the dish. Fun spot to go to when making a round trip from Sac to SF. On the way back, you will be ready to make a stop! Lol And this place is a nice retreat from all the traffic! The view is pretty and the bar seemed like a cool spot to hang out. Definitely reserve a window seat, if can! But the bar seats are just as good of a view. The only good thing about this place is the cute name and story. We should have taken a hint from the horrific parking experience. This is one of those crowded, noisy places where you hear the happy birthday song every 5 minutes. The view, if you are seated near it, is beautiful. The decor looks like it's been in place for 40 years and they haven't looked at it since. Service is haphazard. The servers look and act bored. They probably are. Our unappetizing appetizer came out after two entrees. The third entree was served five minutes after the first two. Two of us had crab. It was overcooked. The roasted vegetables were incinerated. The garlic pasta tasted like broccoli, not garlic. One of us had the prime rib. It looked like it had been in the window at least 10 minutes. It wasn't the cut requested and was tough to eat in spite of the giant knife provided. A forkful of the gluey mashed potatoes brought the entire pile up with it. This place needs a shakeup. Although we ran later than we told them, they still had a table ready for us on a busy Saturday night. We had the sizzling Rib-Eye for our main course with the mash potatoes and cream spinach ( both come automatically with it). My steak was overcooked (I wanted to order rare/medium so it wouldn't be over cooked and I was told the lowest they do is medium/rare) and it was salty, our wedge salad was not a wedge (It was like a small bowl of salad spread across a plate), my friend ordered the crab cocktail, there was like 3 little pieces of crab, and then my other friends order was partially wrong. Nobody told us if there were any specials or if there were any.. no follow up to see how it was or if we needed something else.. I had to get the waitress because the order was wrong. I went with my family for lunch recently and we were given the option to be seated outside in a cabana. The weather was perfect and the view of the ocean was spectacular. The service was great and they were constantly coming to check on us to ensure everything was tasting good and our beverages were full. The bread appetizer with butter was magnificent I could eat it all day if I had the option. I ordered the French Dip which probably wasn't the best decision they used the same bread that came with the appetizer which was good but I felt I should've ordered something else. The drinks were good and their chicken alfredo was better than most. What an utter disappointment. On June 15, 202, I took my father to an early dinner at the Dead Fish. We had a 5pm reservation and after checking in promptly, we were told there was still a 30 minute wait. We waited in the bustling bar area and after some time, I thought I heard our name called. As I walked to the hostess, I see a couple being escorted to a table. I ask the hostess if my name was called and she said that the couple had just "stolen" our reservation. I said that they should go confront the couple but was assured that there was another table outdoors. We were taken to a table that was at such a slant, that the contents of my glass were threatening to spill. Our waitress was kind, but when bread arrived to the table, we had no silverware to spread the butter and had to wait a VERY long time (after asking several staff members) to get cutlery. It was my very first time to the restaurant and it was a dismal experience. And to add insult to injury, after I expressed my experience in an online survey, the restaurant reached out to "make it right", yet I never heard back from them again. My family and I went to Dead Fish for lunch, and we were seated really fast. Our server was "Shawna" and let me tell you, she was just amazing. One of my peeves when dinning out is when the waiter/waitress doesn't check on your table often or fill up our water glasses when they are empty. Well, Shawna was just awesome. She was very attentive. She kept checking up on us to make sure were having a great dining experience. Of course, the food was delicious (see pics). I want to like this local restaurant but there are issues. The one thing that gets me is none of the sea food is locally caught from what I can tell. Maybe the mussels, oysters and crab are during Dungeness season, but I doubt it. Salmon and shrimp are farmed and the other three fish on the menu come from different parts of the world. Why not local caught sand dabs, or other flat fish? Why not tuna from our waters off San Francisco? Why not Rock Fish in season? How about Spot Prawns? Herring? Anchovy? Sardines? Rock Crab that is open year round? Squid? Sea Urchin? I don't get it. Service was great. Waiter was attentive on a super busy Friday night. A small dinner salad and bread should be part of most items on the menu. I am Celiac and there were few offerings on the menu that I could safely eat. None of the fish items were marked GF. I ended up eating Fillet Mignon which was tasty. Came with mashed potatoes and cream spinach. I ordered the fillet Mignon medium rare but it was super rare, as in cool in the center. Oh well, I ate it and enjoyed it in spite of the cow still mooing. I really wanted Seafood but... none of it other than Oysters were marked GF. I get it, a crazy busy kitchen is not a GF environment, but holy hell a pan fried chunk of fish can't be GF? I probably won't return. read more

A beautiful anniversary dinner with the hubby. A whole crab for $49.99 so of course we had to get two and it was AMAZING. The view of the bay was breathtaking and the location is literally across the bridge from our home. You'll definitely want to make reservations at The Dead Fish. We were here last weekend and the place was packed! Parking was a little tricky too (I only knew of a third lot after circling the two a few times). No issues, I gave myself extra time since it was a little drizzly coming from the city. By the time I parked and got to the restaurant it was already 6pm, right on time! The rest of the party was already seated and we started getting some appetizers for the table. Everyone else has been here before so I let them handle the ordering. We ordered fried artichokes, calamari, mussels and shrimp on a sizzling cast iron platter for sharing. There was plenty of bread to go around so we used it to soak up all of the sauces. For the mains we got the whole Dungeness crab, dead fish cioppino stew and a crab louie. I was a little worried about the crab season but they assured me they weren't impacted by the delayed season in the Bay Area. The crab was very meaty and we had plenty to go around Not sure what happened to the crab louie but we ended up having too much food so it was fine that it didn't come out. The bar pumps out some really crafty drinks as well. For dessert we ordered the super sundae and a tiramisu. Both came out in tall glasses with lots of whipped cream on top. I suspect someone in the kitchen was on a whip cream rampage. It was really good though! Service was great. We spent a good amount of time at the restaurant enjoying the ambiance and catching up. It's definitely a nice location for views of the sunset if you arrive here in the late afternoon. All of our drinks were refilled multiple times and we even got coffee in a cute little cup to go. Best shellfish in the Bay Area, bar none. Been there several times and always waddled out, sated with shellfish. We always get the big combo. We will be there on Super Bowl Sunday (2024) after a day of trout fishing on San Pablo Reservoir. We'll bring a change of clothes so we don't stink the joint out. But we will be there (avoiding watching the game, I tend to go Keith Moon when they lose a S Bowl (tv goes right into the Bay) so we'll be avoiding TVs like the plague. Let's start with the good: the location is really cool, especially if seated outside. Their patio is right there on the cliff with scenic overlook of the two bridges, so it's really no wonder why The Dead Fish parking lots are always full. Inside is spacious and decorated in classic/casual American- Italian restaurant fashion, not unlike the sister restaurant(s) such as Stinky Rose in SF. The whole bar area is open seating, but the patio is the star of the show here. After all The Dead Fish is for many folks synonymous with the town of Crockett, and has been a local attraction for years. The food-in my opinion-does not fully justify the price tag; but I'm not a fan of crab and this is what The Dead Fish is primarily known for. So since I don't enjoy crab, I went with the second most popular dish on their menu which is their prime rib. I was a little disappointed with it because the steak had not much flavor to it, even after I poured au jus over it. I ordered the lite cut, medium-rare. To be honest, there was nothing wrong with the way the steak was cooked, but I just prefer more flavor that comes with grilling vs roasting. There was a light serving of mashed potatoes and a heavy serving of collard greens to complete the plate. I would rate the steak itself 3/5...it was medium-rare, but also somewhat dry. Paradox, I know. Since it was Father's Day and we had a party of 4, we also got some appetizers prior to the main course: calamari, EPI bread, and clam chowder. The bread was the best part of the 3. Guess back in the day it used to be complimentary, but those times are obviously long gone. Others in the party (we had 2 kids) had fish and pastas for main...They liked it, but again, it wasn't something they'd talk for hours later about how great it was. The service was fair, though the timing was perhaps a bit off. As in no need to check on the table when glasses are full, but once they get close to empty perhaps it would be wise to offer refills, or something different. The beer selection was "aight" with nothing really craft about it (Lagunitas, Trumer, Anchor Steam...). I would probably try my luck with wine or one of the cocktails next time instead. While I really loved the location and ambiance, I can't say the same for the whole experience. I guess 3.5 Yelp rating is spot on. Overall rating for me about 3.5/5 but definetly less than 4.... Unless I develop an appreciation for crab, it might be a while before I get back to The Dead Fish. read more

TLDR: nice spot for casual to semi-nice dinner. Bit pricey, but food is good. -- After hearing multiple recommendations from family and friends about this place, I've finally decided to give it a try. I would definitely recommend having a reservation as this place got super busy on the Friday night. Even with a reservation, I had to wait ~15mins for the table. Parking can also be hard, but not impossible. When I made the reservation, I noticed it's under the same ownership as Salito (in Sausalito) and The Stinking Rose (in San Francisco). Both places I've tried before and enjoyed! The menu at the dead fish is almost identical to Salito. I had the Branzino which was nicely cooked and tasty. I wish I got a bit more food because I was still hungry after. However, my cousin got the prime rib slab and it was massive! It looked like 32oz of meat! I will say it's not as good as House of Prime Rib, but for $80, he definitely got his money's worth. I'd definitely recommend to others and I will be coming back for lunch service to eat outside along the waterfront view. read more

Went we here for date night on Sunday and I absolutely LOVED it. There was about 20~30mins wait to get seated outside but we were able to sit by the bar while we waited. The bartender was very friendly and the Mojito was on point. We sat outside which was just beautiful and the dishes were delicious. Our waiter by himself was a 5-star, I wish I took his name. He was attentive, personable, and very professional. This is definitely a hidden gem and was worth the drive down from Sac.
