Food was okay, I would say average greasy fast diner food. I wasn't a huge fan simply because I'm a foodie - and love really flavorful fresh food. I ordered the 2x2x2 which was pancakes, eggs, and bacon. I couldn't even eat the bacon because it was so so crispy, it just tasted like grease. Which is sad because I love bacon! The place was crowded and we sat at the table right by the door - which was a nightmare. Everyone is staring at you saying "these people look like they're finishing soon" and you feel pressured to get out. People crowded all around our table and it was really uncomfortable. However the staff there was quick, efficient, and worked hard to keep up with the busy crowd. They did forget to bring out my side of hash browns but they were quick to admit it and make them for me. There is no waiting list, and I really think there should be. Because everyone crowds the front entrance trying to figure out who is next. It's chaotic. Had we sat at another table I would have given 4 stars. In my opinion the first table should be removed and converted into a mini waiting area, because the table ruined the experience. read more

My only complaint is that they are not open later. That is why 4 stars. That said, they really did an amazing job with remodeling and as always, their food rocks. It is diner food, but good diner food. Also, their chef has put thought into the menu by making some selections with their own local twist. Always a favorite stop in Norman. Always. It's almost a necessity to eat here after a busy weekend in that college town. Coolest thing of all, it was featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network! You walk in... seat yourself... even if there is a wait to be seated, it's never for very long. They turn tables here so fast. Sit a small booth or sit at the bar, if your group is bigger than 4 people, you'll have to split up. Everything about the atmosphere and service is very diner-esque. It's exactly what you'd think and expect from a diner. Service is always efficient and the servers normally have A LOT of personality. Now the food... PS, they have condiments for days! They can perfectly cook eggs all day long, have awesome biscuits and gravy, and their specials are almost always on point. No one judges me if I eat pancake syrup with my sausage patties, half the crowd is hung over from the night before, the other half are an older group of regulars that get treated so well, it's just a darn good place to eat. read more

Oh the Diner... They have salt shakers older than I am. The Diner is so old the pink and black decor is now champagne and black. The booths as well- either original or just badly need to be refinished- sitting down too quickly can be painful if you're in the middle. After you eat here you'll want to change your clothes, and you may continue smelling the Diner until you wash said clothes too. The walls are covered in tattered paper pictures, inexpensive digital prints of the late Mr. Amspacher's fishing exploits, unframed and hung with scotch tape. Mr. Amspacher, or Mark, an accomplished restauranteur, owned the Diner until from the mid 90's until his passing a few years ago. After his passing, combined with the departure of the fabled short-order cook, Juan, the food quality took a serious nose dive. There was a period where I was constantly sending my food back- eggs too runny, eggs brown and burnt, hash browns still frozen... I'm sure cooking on that griddle is not easy but this was like watching Ron try to use Hermione's wand. Luckily, that period is over, and the current staff has a handle on the fare that has made the Diner a Norman landmark. A note on wait times: If you can't get out of bed before 9 plan on waiting. It isn't usually a long wait, but the tiny dining room, humanity's insistence to sit at a table before it is bussed and cleaned, and the building's southern exposure all make for an awkward waiting in line experience. A note on the menu: It makes me laugh that when I decide on breakfast I'm basically deciding on a breakfast burrito 1 of 4 different ways. Burritoed. Un-burritoed, or quesadillad. Naked (the Mexi-scram), or with beans and fried eggs instead of scrambled- Huevos Rancheroed. All just different enough to make me feel like I always have to make a tough decision. However, easy decision, get some green ranchero sauce- it is amazing, and vegetarian. A note on how much of a hard time I give the Diner: I love the Diner, everyone does. I'll have to give it my five stars. I was enamored with the functionality of this little place. They pump out lines of people but don't treat you like a number. They aren't super friendly but they smile and greet and thank - they are just super busy. For those of you back home in Hawaii that have eaten at places like Hanara's or Liliha Bakery or any homey type of Dinner you'd love it here. I got to sit right at the counter and watch the cooks the entire time. They don't stop moving and the prep is unreal. It's like looking at the inside of a clock for a good 30minutes and see how it's working. I ordered the blueberry pancakes- soft steamy, moist, delish! Also got bacon- nice and crispy and they aren't stingy. Along with that I got eggs over easy- perfectly made no runny buggers They clean up quick. They accept credit or debit cards. Yes I visited the restroom. It's small and in the back of the kitchen near the back door. No toilet seat loners but it's clean, have hand towels and soap and lots of toilet paper. Even has a mirror. There is street parking out front. I ate way too much and didn't even finish my pancakes. My meal with coffee was $10.22. Really got my monies worth. Before I went here I had recommendations from yelpers and I read all the reviews. So, I was pretty pumped to hopefully find a sweet breakfast spot. My husband and I have a Sunday morning tradition we're trying to start back up here, which is going out for Sunday morning breakfast. Well we actually went on a Monday before we took his mother to the airport, and it was pretty busy. One thing I usually love about "mom and pop" shops is the warm welcome you normally get the instant you walk in. At this place no one really greeted us. :( We waited for a table to be cleared off and sat down. The waitress came over and took our drink order and returned with our waters and then we put in our breakfast order. I can say the service was good, our waters never went empty. Even though the service was good, it was weird, she never made conversation with us once. But she wasn't really talking to anyone, so I figured she was just a quiet girl or having an off day. Our food came quickly and it wasn't to bad! I just stuck with something simple, as I am really self absorbed currently and trying to get in shape and lose weight. So, Two scrambled eggs, hash brown, and sausage for me. The sausage was interesting, very different, I wasn't a fan. I'm not sure what kind of sausage it was but none of us like it. The eggs and hash brown were great though. I did like that my proportions were spot on. Usually I order two eggs at places and its like 4 eggs. It was the perfect amount. The husband and mother-in-law both got the eggarito. I of course had to try it so I had more to write about in my review, lol. It was surprisingly delicious. If I wasn't worried about what I eat at the moment it wouldn't of been my first choice of order on the menu. It was a great combination of stuff. And topped off with a green salsa, I LOVE GREEN SALSA! All in all, I liked the place, but I think i've been spoiled the last five years with my usually places in California and finding new places to take there spots is difficult. I feel like the Diner is maybe a little bit over-rated thanks, in part, to Guy Fieri, who really bothers me but they have a damn good breakfast burrito. The Diner is a ridiculously tiny restaurant with I'd say about 8-9 booths and then some seats at the bar. If you do not get here early, you will wait and wait and wait and you will get really frustrated because you don't put your name down for a seat; it is first come first serve and if someone tries to take a seat and they got there after you, it is up to you to say something to them, because the employees won't. Other than that, the food is great. The eggarito is absolutely gigantic and it is wonderfully tasty. It is the only thing I've had at the Diner because I have a hard time steering away from something that is so yummy. Service is iffy and sometimes slow, but it is a staple in Norman, so it is a must try breakfast place. P.S. don't forget to bring cash! This place does NOT take credit cards! read more

Clearly this place has amazing reviews but after our experience here I can't understand why. We arrived and we're promptly greeted with a pleasant server who offered our son toy cars. That set the tone for a great visit. The food arrived and it was awful. The French toast was so saturated with cinnamon it wasn't even edible. My wife's chili fries were awful and the juices left her BLT soggy. My kids split the 2x2x2 and the pancakes were so rubbery our son couldn't chew it and my daughter struggled to cut it with a fork. The eggs had absolutely no seasoning either. It was completely disappointing as we really expected so much more. Surely there was a new cook or something because clearly others have had a much better experience. It was a waste of $40 and would have been more satisfied with McDonald's. read more

I absolutely love this place for breakfast. I miss going there on the weekends due to living in Las Vegas now. This will be on my list when I go back to Norman every time. They have a good breakfast selection, and they serve it until they close. It's great for the history of the place, so go there just to see it. I've had everything you could think of on the menu, and everything is very good. It's your typical diner food, just with better flavor. They're known for their chili, so I recommend that. My favorite thing to get is the pancakes with blueberries. The burritos, and huevos rancheros are also very yummy. The service is good, and friendly. Expect a wait when going on the weekend mornings. As soon as I pulled up this review page my mouth started watering for blueberry pancakes. While I could probably leave my assessment at that, I'll elaborate. This is the diner that you see in movies growing up. The service is super-friendly and the people are all sporting the same college football gear (Boomer!). The area is small but once we were seated I didn't feel too cramped with a booth all to ourselves. We were served promptly and ohmygosh you have to get the blueberry pancakes. I wish I still lived in Norman so I could go quench my craving now. I wish I had gone there every Saturday morning of my college career! The first question that came to my mind when I took a bite of my eggurito at Diner was, "Why in the hell didn't I come to the Diner when I was going to school here for all of those years?????" I recently went back up to Norman to visit my old college stomping grounds for the first time in several years (BOOMER SOONER!) and was looking for a spot for a quick breakfast. I always resort to my trusty fellow Yelpers, and you guys led me to Diner. When I was going to school here, I rarely ever went to the downtown area of Norman..there was nothing there. So it shocked me to see that there was a restaurant down there that people were raving about! Like everyone else said, the establishment is quite small, but we were able to grab a booth, it wasn't that crowded. I ordered the Eggurito with hash browns. The potatoes were cooked to perfection...very nice, browned, and crisp on the top. The Eggurito itself was good, but what really put it over the top was the "Ranchero Sauce" on top! It's like a salsa verde made with green chilies and tomatillos.....sooooo gooood! My girlfriend had pancakes, which were sooooo goood as well! (I stole a couple of bites). I haven't tried all of the new places that have popped up in Norman over the past several years, but I bet you still can't get a better breakfast anywhere else. read more

I've been here twice and each time it was their coffee that I liked the most. Obviously it's impossible not to hear about The Diner if you live in Norman, but quite honestly this place is just okay in my opinion. Do they have decent food? Depends on what your expectations are. Is the service decent too? Depends on whether you come here on a Saturday or not. Are they overpriced? Yes (to me). Do we have better options for breakfast in Norman? Yes (to me). I am by no means suggesting that this is not a breakfast place worth trying, but I do find many, many of the extremely positive reviews here slightly inaccurate, inconsistent with my experience. Perhaps there is something to this place, but so far I haven't seen it. I might return and give it another shot, since they have such good coffee, though. read more

A couple of things caught my eye, which lead me to the Diner: 1. Heard Guy Fieri featured the Diner back in 2009. I'd say the hype has died down now, as there was no wait when we arrived an hour before close. 2. The number of reviews. There are not tooo many places with more than a handful of reviews in Norman! One of my favorite types of restaurants to visit is one that is only open for a small part of the day. Why? Logically, if they can sustain their business well when relying on only 8-ish hours of operation, they MUST be doing something right. Considering the Diner has been in operation for 100+ years, I can safely assume they serve up some delectable food. So, after perusing the menu, we ordered: 1. Huevos Rancheros 2. Egg quesadilla 3. One egg with bacon, fries (substitution), and biscuits and gravy Everything above is recommended. My breakfast (the huevos rancheros) was delicious. My eggs were almost perfectly over medium, as I requested. The hash browns were prettyyyy amazing - partially crispy and not greasy. The only component of my dish that I wasn't crazy about was the tortillas. My cousin liked her quesadilla and said she was surprised she liked the Diner. Apparently, she's been to a similar place right down the street and said she wasn't a fan there. Prices are cheap, with just about everything falling into a range of $6-$8 and it comes with a LOT of food. 2/3 of us had to take our leftovers to-go. We were able to pay via card, so the cash-only warning no longer applies. Service was good, not great though. The waitress was friendly, helpful and patient in explaining the menu and our choices of sides, and remembered our order when we went to pay. I would say she could have come by a tad more frequently. I think she came back once after we received our food. There was another lady with some wild hair! Definitely memorable. Most people in there were regulars, for sure. I could tell by the interaction with staff and they ordered without looking at the menus. One guy came in and sat at the bar, didn't order any food, but showed off this huge pillow to all the ladies working there. Haha. I've driven passed this place a many of times & the food network stamp of approval lured me in.. I also love to support local restaurants. The line is long, we arrived Sunday around 12:00p.m. and waited in line outside for a solid 30-40 minutes. The inside of this place is tiny, really, really tiny. It was beautiful outside and there was a friendly homeless man on the bench next to us which kept us entertained with conversation about his recent release from prison. A couple of dudes came up to the joint while we were about 3 parties deep in waiting. They completely bypassed the entire line and went inside to sit at the bar top. I think everyone of us in line was flabbergasted that they totally cut at least 5 groups of people! Ugh, people. Anyway, our turn finally arrived! I'd been starring at the menu on the door for a near hour so I was already sure of what to order. The waitress wiped the booth down and I sat in it...it was still wet and the fact that I was wearing shorts made it unpleasant for about 10 minutes...but I'm not really particular & this is after all, a diner. We ordered, got our food after 3 different people had sat down (after us) . My boyfriend and I both went for the Eggarito which was amazing. The tomatillo/green chili/ ranchero sauce was over the top. I had hashbrowns, he had home fries, and we split biscuits n' gravy on the side. The food was great, it cost $20 for 2 people, 2 meals, 2 drinks, and 1 ala carte B N G. Would I go back? Yes. Would I wait in line that long again? Idk...I'm pretty impatient when it comes to eating...and when it was all said and done, we left at 2p.m. The food is in fact, amazing. Great huevos rancheros. Tortillas, beans, eggs and sauce were perfectly layered such that you had some in each bite. Sometimes you have to ration your beans or the tortillas, or they aren't distributed across the plate and you have to put the bites together yourself. Not so on these huevos rancheros. The Ranchero sauce is flavorful and spicy but without too much heat. Hashbrowns were crispy without being too crunchy and went well with the beans and Ranchero sauce. I'll be back. read more

Downtown spot small and worth the 20 minute wait. One row along wall of booths and counter seating max occupancy is about 50 people. We had beef brisket hash with eggs and Mexican scramble with chicken fried steak all great taste.
