I'm pretty sensitive to the impact COVID-19 has had on the restaurant industry as a whole and still... this place is not really as good as it was even just a few months ago. After a really good experience a couple years ago, I revisited in late October snd it was very scaled back and had a few inconsistencies (burnt hand-pies and blasé service) I went back this past weekend. Big mistake! . The gnocchi was bland and dense, snd the pork that came with it was fibrous and slimy simultaneously. My friend had a fried chicken sandwich which was badly cooked and served on a roll that went to paste when he chewed it. I wasn't going to leave to a yelp review, but I left a comment on Dirty Truths Instagram saying I had a bad experience and wanted to understand why it happened and they DELETED the comment without any response! So here's the original message I sent to their DM: I was just at your bar and I've never had a bad experience until tn! I was having a glass of prosecco and accidentally knocked it over reaching for something and it broke and I lost the rest of my bubbly. Total accident and I was of course apologetic about it! The bar tender didn't offer to pour me a second glass or even a small glass to make up for what I spilled. So I asked if I could order just a half glass of prosecco. She said sorry, can't do it, only beers and ciders can be ordered by the half. I said okay, even though I spilled mine? She said no, she couldn't do it--it wasn't the policy. So I'm writing to ask 1)is this indeed the policy? And 2)if so, why so harsh? I've worked in the service industry, accidents happen, you want your customers to feel happy, not bad, right? I've put off reviewing this place for some time, because words threaten to elude me when it comes to this place. I feel I could write 6 pages and not really be understood. Meh. Such is trying to describe a place that is more like an amalgam of memories on Yelp. It's a sweet place to go. IF, and only if, you really, really like beer. If your friends don't drink beer, don't go here with them, at least on a weekend night. It can be crowded, loud, and if you sit in the wrong places, hard to hear each other. But if you get excited about trying a lambic on draft, or know the taste of "Old Engine Oil" and want to experience that again, or if "Dogfish head" and "Aventinus" are practically sacred words to you, then you ought to make the trip. I've really enjoyed their food - they make good pub fries, and others have recommended the fish and chips. I've had their burger, it is above average. Oddly, they even make a good falafel platter?! If you only order one thing, let it be their vegetarian chili in a bread bowl. It's covered in cheese, and baked in the oven for a bit. It's consistently freaking amazing. They offer other snacks and apps, but you don't go there for the food, really...its all about the beer. Their sister pub, the Moan and Dove, in Amherst, is also plain old crazy awesome. the difference between them is a few miles, and the Northampton location features many more taps. Northampton also features more hipsters, but what can you do? They're everywhere! This is one of my favorite locations to people watch, ever. The waitresses flirt with you, regardless of your gender affiliation, the giant clock is artwork, and the walls are deep red. Expensive for what you get, and more than a little pretentious. That said, the food is not bad and they have an extensive collection of beers on tap, as well as some decent wine. Rumor is that the staff is quite knowledgable, but I can't speak to that, as it was nearly impossible to get anyone's attention and both my wine and water glasses had emptied to nothing before I had to wave someone down. I get it, you're hipsters. You serve lukewarm water without ice in thimble sized glasses, because . . . um . . . well, I actually don't get that part. But you're not posing in a coffee shop, you're *working* Engage. Pay attention. Here's another way of looking at it. The menu has a note on the bottom about the specials: "Our chef has spent a long time thinking of how these flavors will go together . . . etc . . . no substitutions on the specials." Or words to that effect. I get it. I've worked in places like that, where the chef puts a lot of time into thinking up the dishes and doesn't want to mess up a carefully planned combination of flavors at the whim of a customer. I hadn't noticed that disclaimer when I ordered my steak sandwich without mayonnaise (excuse me . . . without aioli). I was informed "no substitutions." It didn't seem like leaving mayonnaise *off* a sandwich was technically a substitution, but okay, not a battle worth fighting. I just ordered something else: a perfectly decent overpriced hamburger, with a side of very good fresh greens. Credit where its due. But as I sat there eating, I kind of read the menu over and noticed that little disclaimer about the specials. In it's way, it's completely fair. It's not like they don't warn you. Fair play . . . when you have an original dish on your hands. But did I mention this was a *steak sandwich* I really wanted one, though there was nothing particularly unusual or creative about it, unless you are of the mind that adding chimichurri to a cheesesteak is somehow cutting edge cuisine, in which case, god bless your sweet naive heart. I really did want that sandwich. But I got something else. And it was good. So was the wine. Full disclosure, I'll probably give it another shot before I give up on it for good. I like to have a little to munch on when I drink but there wasn't a good selection of appetizers or food in general. We ordered the nachos and the pulled bbq duck nachos because my friend is a vegetarian and the server specified which one was which to be careful BUT she mixed it up and my friend almost ate the meat. Also they add the tip in automatically, but I only know that from seeing the small print on the receipt. Once you get past TSA, this place is pretty dope. They require to 2 photo ID's or 2 additional cards with you name on them, if you have an out of state drivers license. My drivers license is from CT, it's not like its from Hawaii with the name McLovin on it. This place is hipsterish, with it's dark red walls and cool art. Then again it's Northampton, so it's not the only hipster spot in town. The cleintee is a little more mixed. The waiters have long breads, which as a diner kind of brothers me sometimes. But then again I have only had the truffle french fries, which really pretty good. I plan on dinning here at some point. Then why do I love this place? The AMAZING beer selection. This place is doesn't carry Bud, Coors,Corona or Heineken. The Dirty Truth is heaven for beer geeks. The staff is very knowledgeable, and appear to be beer geeks too. Finally a beer board with a ton of hops. They have west coast IPAs on tap. I have especially enjoyed Green Flash West IPA, and High Tide Fresh Hop IPA on tap is as good as it gets for a hop head. First of all--glad they are still up and running and the outdoor seating was well-spaced. Our server tonight was very friendly and kind. Dirty Truth recently announced on their website and menu, etc. that they are now paying staff a living wage, so gratuity is now optional (and any tips will be split amongst the entire team). They also state that prices on the menu have been raised accordingly to offset this wage increase. My partner asked if this was actually the case, and we were told that servers are now paid the state minimum wage (which I believe is $12). This is definitely a step in the right direction, but just FYI, if you want to be fair to the staff here in the interim, be prepared to continue shelling out a 20% tip, because I don't think anyone in this area is convinced by the idea that $12 an hour is a "living wage." As in the pre-pandemic world, beer selection is good, while food quality is a little unpredictable and portion sizes are meager for the price . . . read more

I have had issues with this place in the past but never bothered to post anything. So this evening I thought I would give them a try again... it's was about 10:40 or so and there was probably at least 15-20 patrons in the bar. I walked in with a friend and sat down to be greeted bar the bartender to "oh did you guys just get hear? Oh I just called last call" well you just called last call on me ever coming back. I get it that you called last call but we would have had our drink and been out by 11pm closing. Not the first time I have had trash service here. Excellent beer bar. The service is a bit meh, but they did seem to know their stuff. Overall this is a great place to over-indulge in good quality beer served correct and tuck into a delicious burger. Must also mention that the fish and chips here are served properly too, all wrapped up together in paper, and you're getting the whole damn fish too -- couldn't finish it, but it was great if a bit under-seasoned. I'm over-familiar with the Boston/Cambridge beer bar selections, so I was extremely pleased that they offer a bunch from Western MA (esp. the imports from Belchertown) that I haven't had or only had tastes of at beer fests. I don't know if I'd call it a jockier version of Bukowski's more than I would a yuppified version of Bukowski's. Or Bukowski's classied up a bit. I don't need the waiters to be wearing matching black t-shirts, but they're here. I did like the look and shape of the place though and the music wasn't as deafening as Buk's -- which is good. Nice selection of music here as well. If I lived around here I would definitely spend a good portion of time and income here. Honestly, we wanted to love the Dirty Truth. My friend wanted to do a Moscow mule tour of Northampton, so she asked the waitress for one. The waitress was extremely curt, and immediately said that we should consider the menu again because they (obviously) didn't have Moscow mules. We weren't aware that the Dirty Truth lacks a liquor license, but there's no need to be rude about it. Weird, unfriendly vibe overall. I've never been treated so inappropriately by a bar bouncer. The staff are an embarrassment to the establishment, and the incompetence of their training highlights a distasteful degree of provinciality that can easily be read as xenophobia. I traveled to Northampton for business and brought a foreign colleague here on the advice of a friend. My companion was turned away at the door because the bouncer refused to accept her European passport - complete with a current United States Academic Visa - as valid identification. The bouncer actually appeared to have never seen a passport before. I was mortified for my friend. Can you imagine any establishment, let alone a reputable one, not accepting the ONLY internationally recognized form of ID? Does this establishment understand that foreign nationals are not eligible to obtain Massachusetts-issued ID? So "The Dirty Truth's" defacto bar admissions policy bans all non-US citizens from entry. Literally, there is no form of ID available to foreigners that this establishment will accept. This is a shameful and illegal practice. Think about the message this sends in this particular historical moment. This establishment only accepts forms of identification available to US citizens. Shame on this ignorant bouncer - but, more to the point, shame on her flippant manager and the owner of this establishment who has not taken the care to properly train employees in fair and legal treatment of patrons. This could be the most pretentious, snotty, douchey place I've ever been. It's certainly in the running anyway. I was in Northampton for a wedding, and we attempted to have some drinks here the night before. At midnight on Friday going into Saturday, we were asked to keep our volume down by the bartender whom I will call "Long Dreads." Keep in mind, this is a bar, not a lounge or restaurant. Long Dreads is the poster-child for the intentionally aloof, too-busy-to-help-you bartender. Before we were more or less asked to leave, I ordered some beers after trying to get his attention for a couple of minutes. He informed me that the keg for that beer was kicked, and then artfully placed a recommendation of his own in front of me whilst avoiding eye contact (naturally). It was nothing like the beer I ordered originally. He was busy pretending not to see me, so I ordered something else from a different bartender that fit what I was in the mood for. The thing that got me is that he was so busy being intentionally indifferent when I was ordering, but he could not be quicker when getting me the check on our way out. The Dirty Truth is one of those places where you cannot be too demonstrative or festive, lest people think you're actually enjoying yourself. The only exception is ironic merriment. Or if that case of organic, cage-free shoe polish you ordered from a local Smith College cobbler comes in the mail. Between Long Dreads, the other staff person with the handlebar mustache, skinny everything, and fedora, checking eight forms of ID on the way in, the Dirty Truth is to be missed for sure. Our server was fine when we first sat down at a table, some may even go so far as to say semi friendly. Unfortunately the mediocre service went downhill fast. We ordered burgers and mac n cheese and never saw miss Aubrey again. Where was she? No clue. Did I mention that the bar had 5 other people in it?? We had to order drinks from the bar and the nice bartender brought them over to us. The food- good burgers but baaaaad mac n cheese....my friend couldn't even eat it. It would have been nice to tell our server about this but she never once checked in on us so my poor friend went hungry. When she finally brought the bill (after flagging her down) my friend told her the issues with the mac n cheese that, btw, she recommended. It wasn't baked, it was watery, lacked seasoning, basically like noodles with cheese sauce...all for a whopping $18! Our server didn't care to listen to the complaints and said "it doesn't really matter what I think" then went into the kitchen with arms flailing, to, what I can assume would be to complain about US. Anyway, literally 10 minutes later, she threw our cc receipts on the table and walked away. When we asked for a pen to sign said cc receipts, she followed us back to the table and started yelling at us telling us we were inappropriate for not liking the mac n cheese!! My jaw was to the floor. I told her to walk away and she said, "you walk away, you get out of here" and tried to kick us out! Seriously? Did she forget to take her meds or something? Worst service EVER and we're pretty lenient considering our whole table have been in the industry for 10 plus years. We told the very nice manager the story and he said he would do something about it and I really hope he does. The dirty truth? This bar is meh. Yes, they have an extensive beer selection and yes, the food is good. But the dark/hipster/cooler than you thing is so 2006. It's hard to find a seat, the wait staff give you attitude and everyone around you seems to be trying really hard to make it a "scene." The tipping point for me was during my last visit - I went with a friend, and with no one stationed by the door to card folks we took a seat at the bar and ordered our drinks. Fifteen minutes later we were approached and loudly berated for "avoiding the doorman" (who, PS, WASN'T AT THE DOOR). I'm 35, kids. I'm giddy like a little girl when I'm carded, and don't appreciate being hassled because their employees aren't doing their jobs. We paid our tab and left, beer glasses full. From the start, the skinny jean twig arm "bouncer" gave us a hard time about having out of state ID's, and required TWO ADDITIONAL forms of ID. For two people in their later 20s, that's a bit much. The beer selection if awesome. I have always been a fan of the 'dirty.' However, lately I have to agree it is really pretentious. The waiters can be snooty as well as the bartenders. If you get a good bartender (guy with dreads) you are all set. The others are not friendly and rude. Not to mention, the hipster "lets listen to jazz flute on a record player" is trying waaaay to hard. I would rather go to the new brewery across the street. The atmosphere is relaxed and they have live music. If you are paying upwards of 70 dollars for two burgers and some beer you should be treated a little nicer. read more

I was walking to another restaurant, La Veracruzana, for a quick bite before a meeting when I saw a sidewalk sign offering a Chef's Salad in front of the Dirty Truth. I sat at the bar and the bar tender promptly brought me a glass of water. I ordered the Chef's Salad and explained I was in a hurry and asked if it was possible to get in and out in 30 minutes. She told me it should not be a problem and it wasn't. The problem was with they brought me. It came out in a matter of minutes but a Chef's Salad it was not. What came out was a rectangle shaped plate with greens, watermelon, feta and sliced almonds dressed with a balsamic vinaigrette. I told the bar tender a mistake was made I had ordered the Chef's Salad. She said that was the Chef's Salad and directed me to the chalk board in the back describing the specials. What is the world coming to? I don't mind a little creativity with a Chef's Salad but this was nothing even close to a Chef's Salad. It looks like it could be a good place for beer. I was not having beer that day but I noticed displayed behind the bar my all time favorite, the Cantillion Rose de Gambrinus. This beer is very hard to find in my area and I asked her to reserve one for me for after my meeting. She looked into the cooler and said they did not have it. Why are they displaying it? This just seems annoying for both server and customer. Who cares what they used to have? Just show us what you have. The bartender left the check right as she brought the salad so I could pay right away. I like this. The problem was the bill was $13.91 for a rather small, meatless Chef's Salad. Are you kidding me? I paid with a $20 and was give a $5, $1 and a dime. Sorry I'm in a hurry you are getting $1.10 for tip. I would have tipped more if she would have given me different change. If you are considering going here, just cross the street and go to the Hinge instead. They are essentially the same place but the food is better and less expensive across the street. read more

The Dirty Truth is dismal compared to what it once was. The wine prices are often more than I'd pay for a bottle, and the pours are small. I've been coming the the Dirty Truth religiously since they opened. I used to love going so much-friendly staff, and you just felt like they really cared about what they were doing and about their customers. Now, I just feel like they're trying to get every penny out of people. The menu is bleak, prices have gone way up, and they are often weird about any substitutions. I wouldn't even mind paying higher prices if the experience there were enjoyable. I've been offered free drinks or generous samples at other places in town. I never expect this, but it does feel good to be seen. This just doesn't seem to happen here even for folks who've been going for years. It makes me sad because it's a place I used to really love. O hell yes. To start, 10++++ stars for the barbecue pulled duck nachos. We almost cried with joy after a heaping mound of succulent pulled duck with queso fresco, cheddar, pickled red onions, black beans, jalapenos and cilantro over a platter of warm chips was set in front of us. Unbelievably tasty. The pozole was also second to none but we took most of it to go after gorging ourselves with duck nachos and brews. But still - it made for the best leftovers imaginable: slow cooked pork shoulder and hominy crowned with duck cracklins, cheddar, queso fresco, and a bunch of pickled veggies on the side. They've got a pretty creative menu at this beer bar - from sweet potato and beet chips with sweet fennel cream dip to white bean cassoulet with sage, andouille and duck sausage, and baked bread crumbs. How's THAT for bar bites? As for beers - The Dirty Truth knows their stuff. Aside from their extensive draught list (I kept it simple with a Founder's Breakfast Stout), they feature an endless bottle selection of lagers, Abbey/Trapist ales, saisans, stouts, porters, lambics, seasonals, and more. Probably a vintage or two thrown in there. Service was slow, but the place was PACKED when we got there at 10pm on a Thursday. We had a nice time here on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. They have a laid back atmosphere with good seating options. It's great to find a place where you can hang out comfortably with a few friends without having to shout over loud music or other patrons. They have a nice drink selection and really good food. We loved their fries - super crispy and tasty. Beware: the large order of fries is *really* large. My partner also really loved the sandwich special. Overall a great experience. If you don't like the Dirty Truth, at this point I have to think it says more about you than the institution itself. Now well established, the DT keeps putting out a cultivated and extensive tap list as well as rare bottles that are always available. Personally, I'm partial to their brunch menu. Between the pork belly tacos, the chicken and waffles, and their corn-beef benedict, I usually have to be rolled out of the place. For such a chaotic atmosphere I always have found the staff knowledgeable, friendly, and hustling to make service as quick as possible. Have I seen them give people attitude? Yes. Nothing special! I went here once on the urging of a friend who wanted to meet for a few beers and knowing that I enjoy beer he suggested here. I didn't say anything to him or at the time but really felt the need to comment on here. The service stunk, they were rude and stuck up and the beer was way over priced, I was hungry but I chose not to give them anymore business and decided to just stop by Fitzwilly's for a bite on my way home.
