Spent two nights last week at the historic Drake Hotel in Chicago. It was my first stay in the hotel, although I have been to the city many times and actually lived there for a short time in 1988-89. The hotel does not disappoint! The majestic lobby, large and well appointed rooms, breathtaking views of the park, beach and lake, and the fabulous food and beverage were all noteworthy, as was the ideal location, walkable to everywhere I needed to be. But the most outstanding part of my experience was the staff. In these days where great customer service seems to have flown out the window, the staff at The Drake didn't get that memo They are, without exception, friendly, accommodating, efficient and hospitable. Each and every one of the staff went out of their way to ANTICIPATE my every need. They even have staff who text you during your stay to inquire how things are going -- if you have a request, they fulfill it before you return. The property is obviously well managed, the staff highly trained and well motivated, and their commitment to excellence evident every minute of your stay. They have my highest recommendation-- I can't wait to return one fine day. read more

Beautiful hotel on magnificent mile that has maintained its classic glamour. Gorgeous lobby with plush carpeting and chandeliers. Detailed woodwork. Spacious guest rooms. Feels very luxurious. Check in staff was courteous and efficient. There were multiple contacts from The Drake throughout my brief two day stay inquiring about need for housekeeping, satisfaction with room, request to leave a review on TripAdvisor, and check out processes - it was too many for such a short time being there. Also, old hotel comes with old plumbing. My bathroom sink briefly backed up while I was brushing my teeth but the issue resolved itself. read more

Where do I start with this place? We checked in Saturday afternoon for an event we were attending locally. Staff at check-in were very efficient and attentive, and when we requested additional pillows and towels, we received them in a few minutes. The lobby was nice and well kept, kind of had a old world charm to it. That was about it for the positives. As for the negatives.... 1. Overall appearance in the hallways and rooms was very dated. I get they are an older hotel and have an aesthetic they are going for, but keep it up. 2. Doors seemed very flimsy and not very secure. They were almost like a door one would have for a bedroom in a house. 3. Walls seemed very thin. You could hear someone sneeze down the hall. 4. Rooms are very dated and not kept up. There was a huge rip in the seam of the carpet that ran a decent length. 5. Furniture seemed old and just thrown in there. Almost like they went to a second hand store and didn't bother to clean it up or repair it before they put it in the room. 6. Wallpaper was bubbling and pealing in many places. 7. Bathroom size was decent for the fact we weren't planning on spending more time than needed in there. 8. Light fixture in bathroom was cloudy and looked it hadn't been cleaned or replaced in about 20 years. 9. Tub did not drain well. Probably needed a good rod out to clean any junk in the pipes. 10. Sink was leaking all over the place, thus needing extra towels to clean up around it every time we turned it on. 11. A lot of dark grime around the outlet in the bathroom. 12. Staff at the Coffee shop the next morning was very hit or miss. We had some people that were very attentive, but there were many that were very rude and short with customers. One did not want to make sandwiches with bagels (for those who had options of bagel or croissants), and even yelled at a customer when he said he ordered one on a bagel and they didn't want to remake it. I get they were slammed with orders from room service, but others were nice to customers. 13. When we paid for our order we were informed it was going to be a wait because they have quite a few orders ahead of us. Fine with us as we weren't in a terrible rush and understood they were short staffed. Our coffee was ready before our food, and when we went to get it we asked which drink was which and the person at the counter snapped and yelled at us "I don't know". Luckily another server said which one was which and apologized. I know people will say that it's an old hotel and hard to maintain. It doesn't need to be ultra modern and fancy, but how hard is it to keep the paint and wallpaper looking fresh and bathrooms really clean? There are other older hotels in the city with rooms that are in no way as run down looking as this one. I would not stay here again unless it was completely gutted and cleaned. read more

I have visited the Drake a number of times, but never spent the night. To me, this is the old Chicago when times were easier and when you could smoke cigars at the bar; just something about the old hotels you don't find in the more modern ones. Grand entrance, beautiful ballroom and everything else you would expect in a hotel like this. The bar makes a mean drink and great food with top notch service. Nice little shops on the basement level worth a visit and the best thing about this place is the location. One of my favorite places in Chicago to stay! read more

The Drake used to be world class. It is now low class and the front desk staff hate their jobs and push back over basic requests: like water. Or a robe, or a mini bar all which used to be the norm. No more. They are riding in their reputation from the past. They got my reservation wrong at the desk, and then blamed me for their software program in terms of my choosing the "street view" online, but not getting it. I asked for water, you can get some if you go down to the front desk. They can't be bothered to send someone up at 10:00pm, so after a very long day, I had to get dressed go down to get a cheap water that had been sitting out on the desk. Look at the photos of the filth, The Drake is gone and some horrific, dying, architectural wonder is being left to rot. Hilton, you should be ashamed. What a loss. Don't waste your money. I told some friends we were starting at the Drake, and then said, "oh, that looks like a cool property! how is it?" Me: "well it's old" Friend: "in a timeless way?" Me: "no, in a sad way" This might have been a grand mainstay back in it's hay day, but not the rooms are definitely showing it's age and some wear and tear are beyond repair. We reserved a city view but got a room on the 1st floor with a view of the concrete and the native birds of Chicago; pigeons and crows. There was a wedding every single day while we were there and you can hear the bass all night long. You can also hear your neighbors each time they flush a toilet because the toilet lever attached to the wall is so old. The handles of the dresser were broken or missing pieces. The furniture is dated. Carpet is worn. Pillows are deflated and the paint is peeling, with clear water damage on the ceiling visible. The good: They offer free bottles of water at the front desk that you can ask for any time. The gentlemen working at the bell hop were very nice and kind to help you with your luggages. The proximity to Oak Street Beach and The Mag Miles is the only draw to this dilapidated hotel. No wonder it's for sale. read more

The worst hotel ever! Water pressure is bad. Call for room service they said you have to scan the code that is literally 30 ft phone the phone in the room. Tried the cell phone app it didn't work. Called for room service the guy hung up on me. The shower has a tub insert over the old one that feels like you're on a Pilates half ball working out . You're on a moving tub. Who doesn't love a quaint afternoon of high tea? The drake offers the perfect ambiance to satisfy your British cravings. For $55, you pick a tea and brew a personal pot of it. They bring out a cute tiered tray with different British snacks: desserts on top, cute finger sandwiches, scones on the bottom. The scones are buttery and rich, definitely try them with the butter and lemon curd. The curry chicken tart and the smoked salmon were my favorite finger sandwiches. And if you are still hungry, you can ask for another round without any additional cost. If you come on Saturday, there is a harpist as well to make the ambiance even more fancy and blissful. read more

I booked a five day vacation to the Drake hotel in Chicago, and had the worst experience in my life... Please let me start by saying that my travels keep me very close to Hilton hotels, I love Hilton... But on this day, Hilton, let me down, my morning started off by text messaging the front desk telling them that I did not have any extra towels, I did not get the water that I'm supposed to get being a diamond member, I also complained about the room, the room was supposed to be upgraded, and I don't believe it was... The rooms are very old, very dark, Peeling wallpaper, stained bedding, stained walls, a lampshade that's got a hole in it... I could keep going on! So in the morning when I was asking about the things I needed help with "the lady" said that they would take care of my Valet Parking for my stay, I'm staying for five days... The valet parking at this hotel is $75 a day and I'm going to be here for five nights... That's $375 , I accepted their offer and thought everything was OK, I went to go get in the shower, and all the sudden I heard, banging on my door, so I got out of the shower and opened the little people, and it was some guy but I couldn't hear what he was saying so I told him just a few minutes I got back in the shower to finish my shower and then as I was getting out of the shower they were banging more so I went and opened the doorwith no clothes on just a towel and the gentleman who is the manager named Dan Weise told me that they had had a complaint of smoke from a nearby room, I informed him that I do not smoke. I never have smoked and he informed me that he was charging me $250 because he said he smelled smoke. again, I informed him that I do not smoke, and I have never smoked. Within minutes my credit card was charged $250 for some conduct I did not do I called Hilton right away and because I had not checked out they could not help...BEAWARE!!! read more

I love staying at historic, old hotels that are rich in history. I generally try and have expectations that are in line with just that. I was not disappointed at all that we stayed here, the hotel is really lovely and situated where we could walk to everything, everywhere. The staff at all points were incredibly friendly and welcoming. We booked a lake front view room and were so glad we did. The room was a corner room on the fourth floor and was huge. The room was very comfortable, and was decorated appropriately for historic 'vibes'. I think the bathroom floor/counters were heated which was pretty cool, and I say that about the counter top because the towels were always nice and warm. There were a couple of old hotel type things that some might find annoying - like water pressure in the shower and radiator pipes banging every 45 minutes through the night (which did kind of annoy us after awhile) but we just chalked it up to our historical hotel experience at The Drake. If you are like me and run hot, just know that with the older hotels -- there is no AC to blast in the winter and you can't open the windows which was a personal downside for me, but had nothing to do with the hotel. I am happy we spent our weekend here and The Drake made us so comfortable! read more

This was a very nice hotel. It has that old CHICAGO glamour about it. The staff was incredible! The bellman, Chris, was so sweet and such a delight. We stayed here 2 nights and had a great stay. We were upgraded to a suite, and the staff was so kind to include a birthday cake in the room. It was truly a sweet surprise!! The room was very clean and the bed was super comfortable. Absolute stunning hotel. This historic hotel puts you right at the heart of Michigan Avenue and all of the local shopping and restaurants. We stayed here and attended a wedding onsite and it was absolutely beautiful, every last detail! Parking is a bit of an obstacle if you have an oversized vehicle, and definitely don't add a cargo box. This is first hand experience. read more

Filthy famous over priced hotel... i only booked this room because i just flew in from overseas 14 hour flight and my flight back home was canceled i was stuck in Chicago for 2 extra days all the hotels near my airport were sold out. So fate brought me here they were the only Hilton not sold out which should have been a red flag from there. I arrived late about 1am they had no bottle water and i was quite thirsty In the morning i tried to get more water and of course they had none. Went to the little cafe and they also had none smh The rooms are old historic and thats great and but i was over the historic charm. When I had arrived (around 12pm) the room or that same room type that I had selected via the app was not available yet. The Guest Service Agent had pre-checked me in and then I was was able to store my luggage with the bell staff. I had left to enjoy the area and have a late lunch. When I had returned couples of hours later, Natalie M, had completed my check in. She was very friendly and very personable. She had reviewed the amenities of the hotel. Then advised me where the elevators are located. The room was beautifully decorated. As some reviewers stated, some of the furniture have been nicked up but it did not ruin my stay. Of course, the bedding is incredible. The bathroom was spacious for one person. Overall, another great stay with a Hilton hotel. I've always wanted to stay at this historical hotel. Unfortunately, we didn't have a well experienced at The Drake Hotel. It all started with our arrival, we were given a lot of racial remarks and jokes about our financial status. During our stay the employees along with the guests continued to offend us with comments and facial expression. The location is wonderful, and the hotel could be gorgeous. Unfortunately, it needs a lot of work and is outdated. I get that it's a historic hotel, but so is the mattress, the linens, the pillows and the thermostat in the room. The furniture in the room is also old and beat up. The make up mirror fell off the wall in our bathroom, and the room itself had peeling wallpaper and outdated everything. The front desk staff didn't seem the least bit surprised when I told them how disappointed I was. They must get that a lot. Bottom line, there are much better places to stay while visiting Chicago. The drake is such a timeless hotel! I feel like I'm in the Victorian era or something. The rooms show its age for sure but it's still very quaint inside. The bed was comfortable, shower was good, and I just feel like this whole hotel has so much history. My bedroom didn't have any smell and I couldn't hear the outside noise. I needed a fridge and they got one up to my room. I had a view of LV and the BRAD was so nice in the front desk and also the bell hop dude that held the door for me entering in the building was very nice too. After staying at The Drake over a weekend trip to Chicago, I can definitively say that this hotel is one of my new favorites. Charm oozes out of the 1920's style building, and customer service is the top priority of the staff. I booked a King Deluxe room, and was assigned a room on the second floor. While the view wasn't amazing, the amount of natural light shining through the large windows was great and the room itself was clean, large, and well appointed. The room also included a mini fridge and mini bar to store my leftovers (a microwave would have been nice, but I wasn't expecting one anyway). The bathroom has a nice walk in shower and bathtub, with beautiful tile throughout. The bathroom was cleaned daily by the staff. I was happy to see that they playfully rearranged my toiletries as a reminder that it was cleaned. The bed was large and comfortable with high quality sheets. One of the nights I stayed, there was an obnoxiously loud and obviously intoxicated group of people returning for a wedding that seemed to hover right outside my door around 1am. Frustrated, I called the front desk who was happy to send up security, and in 5 minutes the halls were quiet again. While that might have been out of the ordinary, it shows that the hotel values your experience by resolving issues with expediency. There are several eating options in this restaurant, from the award winning Cape Cod Room to Coq D'or to the Palm Court. I ate breakfast in the Cape Cod Room daily, and breakfast was included in my room reservation. The breakfast consisted of a large selection of pastries, bacon, sausages, made to order omelettes and fruits. I left the buffet satisfied each visit. I went to Coq D'or for a cocktail, and was very impressed with the whisky selection, the service and the quality of the drinks. I can say this was the best old fashioned I've had, and they even used a large ice block in the drink instead of ice cubes. There's a drink of the day you can get for 10 dollars, which is rather reasonable of a price for the area. The Palm Court is where afternoon tea is held, and if you aren't sure what that is, it's a tradition that has been held for decades at The Drake. Several high profile celebrities have attended, and the price tag shows it. The cost is $45 a person(!!), but gives you a three-tiered tray of snacks, chocolates and sandwiches along with a lot of high-quality tea. I didn't attend simply due to the price, but it's a 1.5 hour sitting and if you're trying to experience everything the hotel has to offer, you should attend. Overall this was a fantastic stay. The location is incredible, and the hotel itself is unique, charming and beautiful. Put The Drake on the top of your list for your next trip. read more

The location is really the only pro of this hotel - the staff was so overtly rude and unwelcoming upon our arrival that we considered switching hotels. They informed us that parking was our problem, and that they didn't have a lot really - so that's a major complaint, but he also told us that there was no food other than the coffee shop - including room service. Yes, we did visit during COVID, but we had checked the website and they stated in-room dining was available. There were stains on the sheets and blankets, and a sticker from a previous guest on the entryway between our bathroom and bedroom area, and the sheets were not long enough for the bed. The pillows were incredibly uncomfortable. We did have a much better staff member later in our stay who took a photo of us, but even then she was being called by multiple guests at the same time, as she was the only staff member in the entire lobby. When viewing the cost of this room per night outside of COVID, it doesn't live up to that standard. There are beautiful historic elements, but so much is in disrepair and lacking that we will not return, we'll find another Hilton property. read more

I would stay at the Drake again. Our accommodation was in an executive suite on the 10th floor with a city view. Things I liked: 1. Location - you are just off the Magnificent Mile and if you walk the other direction, Lake Michigan shoreline. 2. A beautiful building and decorations. It transports you to another time. (built in 1920) 3. Cold air conditioning in common spaces and in the room. 4. Spacious room! We had chairs, couch, desk, chest of drawers, large closet, valuables safe, large TV stands with lots of storage, and night stands. 5. Fast valet parking! And if you are an AAA member, it's free! Things I didn't care for but are very tolerable: 1. Bed is on the firmer side, which is ok for me but probably not for most people. 2. Teeny tiny room houses the shower/tub, toilet and sink. Remember this is an old building and that's how it typically goes. I've stayed at other historic properties in Chicago that have the same issue. 3. No one told us about the free breakfast in the executive lounge!! It's one floor above the 10th floor, and I don't think accessible by elevator. The view of the lake is amazing from this room. Do not miss it if you have access. 4. Furniture is showing signs of wear. Might be time to refresh a few things in the rooms. What I will do on a return stay: 1. Have a drink in the hotel bar, Coq d' Or. This establishment served the second drink after the repeal of prohibition in the city of Chicago. 2. Tea service in Palm Court. We are planning to return in January. If you book a room this July for select dates in December 2018, January and February 2019, the room is $99 with complimentary breakfast. Location, location, location. That's what you're paying for here. It's a nice hotel with a fantastic location (across the street from the beach, adjacent to the best part of the miracle mile, and walkable to many nearby locations). That said, the rooms are old and need a full refresh, though the beds are comfortable, room was quiet, and everything works as it should. My room had a view of the lake, which was nice to wake up to. The elevators are also small and several were out of commission. Overall, I'm a huge fan of the hotel's ambiance and old school charm (the lobby and restaurant area are beautiful), but it's old bones are both a blessing and a curse (as is the case for many historic hotels). read more

I just wish they would take care of the hotel a little better. The crown molding was in poor condition. Just paint it. A lot of trim work in hallway was also peeling. That's unforgivable for a hotel chain like Hilton. No hot water in shower on Sunday. Sunday is big check out day is what they told us why lack of hot water. Old school. The history and nostalgia are much more interesting than the basic rooms themselves. Room 416 looked down on Michigan avenue and was extremely vanilla. Cons: uncomfortable pillows(they did not feature the pillow menu so many hotels have these days), street noise was easily heard, no mini bar, inconvenient electrical plugs, lack of any sort of in room amenities(not even a pen to write with), bathroom door so old it didn't close easily, door to room didn't close easily either. Pros: friendly staff, great location, old school lounge was a great, and not overly expensive, place to grab a night cap or mid afternoon refreshment, old world opulence(think benches in the elevator) and a historic lobby with great architecture. Overall, I probably wouldn't stay again with so many options in the area, but I definitely don't regret choosing to stay at The Drake. read more

The Drake is an amazing hotel of an era from back in the day. It is quite opulent in design, with that old school touch of decor and customer service. From the time we stepped out of our taxi to the time we checked out, we were treated as superstars. I will start of by saying, this is an old hotel. It will be celebrating its 100 year anniversary next year, so structurally there are some small areas of improvement that need to be address, but nothing that would stop me from staying here. There are areas where the original woodwork probably is still there and needs a lick of paint, but overall some of the updates they have done are nice. The Doctor and I did a staycation here last week and it was magical. There was a little bit of a line to check in as there was a cross country team checking in from Canada. I went to take a seat with our luggage while The Doctor checked in. One of the bell hops brought over chilled water for myself and THe Doctor. Another gentleman stopped over to asked if I was being helped and I explained that my husband was checking us in. We were offered assistance with our bags, but we usually just handle our own luggage. We got a suite for the weekend because we like having a separate living area where we can sit and have drinks/conversation. The room itself was a decent size, with two TVs (one in the sitting area and one in our bedroom). The closet space is crazy! There was a large closet when you first walk into the entryway. There was a smaller closet in between the sleeping area and the bathroom, then the main closet in the sleeping area. In the entry area, we had a separate area where we could have set up a wet bar, with storage for alcohol, a sink and a nice size frig to comfortably store at least a case of bubbles. There is enough space to hold a cocktail party (old school). Not sure, but it looked like there was an egg holder. Overall the room was very clean, including the windows. I am one of those people that looks at the cleanliness of windows and the ones in our room were cleaned and nice to look out of as we had a lake view. Our room had this great mirrored space....not sure what it's purpose was other than to amuse me...guessing it is to check your final dress presentation for dinner. The room was very clean, the furniture looked pretty good, the sofa and chair upholstery looked clean and was in good shape. The bed was a king size with very clean bed linen. The bathroom was very large with updated pipes, counters and faucets. The hotel also provided a bathroom scale. There weren't any hooks for towels, but under the counter for the sinks was a long bar to allow you to hang your towels from. There was one towel rack in the bathroom/shower area. Under the sink was a rack to allow for additional storage of items. I would also say that the entrance, the stairways, the elevators, the lobbies on each floor and the chandeliers are beautiful as well. Some elevators have little love seats that allow you to sit in style and comfort during your ride up to your floor. There are two places within the hotel to have drinks: Coq D'or Restaurant & Lounge and The Palm Court. Both places have live entertainment. On the weekend, you can have high tea at The Palm Court, which I highly recommend. The food at Coq D'or Restaurant & Lounge is okay in a pinch. The staff at The Drake were all very nice. The cleaning staff were all very pleasant and would inquire how our stay was going. One gentleman who was taking a breakfast room service tray to someone stopped to wish us a very good trip home, that he hoped that we had a lovely stay and that he would missed us! He seemed genuine and it was nice to hear. The Drake is in a great location as it down the street from Louis Vuitton and Omega (yay!) as well as Water Tower and other restaurants and shops. You are also in walking distance of the beach when the weather permits. Historically, I love this hotel and love staying here. It is not the shininess of hotels in the Magnificent Mile, but it has a lot of character. Beautiful hotel in the heart of Chicago that is breathtakingly ornate and an architectural gem. The lobby and Palm Court are must-sees.

As of Jan 2020, DRAKE HOTEL has become an ordinary Hilton. Lack of hotel maintenance has made Drake, old and outdated instead of classic & grand. THE SIGNS - (1) WHY is the Palm Court Powder Room so cold during a Private Event? (2) Powder Room mirrors were never cleaned the night before as water stains were present by 8:30am. A Service Industry who forgot the main difference between luxury and affordability is, Service. Any ho, DRAKE's Grand Ballroom is a SET LOCATION for 2 Fox's EMPIRE TV Weddings (2016 & 2020). The same Grand Ballroom was also The Vatican for 2016's The Exorcist TV Series. Non-Union background (BG) extras are grateful & happy to enjoy the view of Michigan Avenue & Oak Street Beach through CAMILLIA ROOM as Holding. THANK YOU. BG Holding areas vary from a chair-less parking lot, to a room with no view. Glitz and Glamour of Hollywood. *lol* NOT just BG...Lead Actors also run on high heels and endures the Chicago cold weather at the El Train. All is fair in suffering...that's looks great & fantabulous on film/TV/video. ;) read more

They held my bags until my room was ready and the lobby was gorgeous, that's why i gave 2 stars. the rooms are run down hotel, our bathroom door had blood on it, toothpaste stains all over the faucet/tissue box and the tub was clogged. hotel was fully booked so instead of switching our room they gave me a $50 food/bev credit. used it at coq d or for dessert, didn't finish any of them but that's another review. staff was very nice, carpet must be replaced it's very obviously old. the patrons are a bit more affluent than average so you do get the luxury of networking and being in the midst of some pretty cool ppl the ball room was nice enough for a wedding, the hotel itself would scare me away though overall, this hotel status should be knocked down to 3 stars MAX read more

The Drake Hotel is a Chicago Landmark. However, I was not impressed. Check-in was a breeze - that was a plus. My room, however smelled weird - like garlic. The complementary robe that was supposed to be in my room was not there. I tried to arrange a wake up call. The number was busy even at 2 am. There was a snack bar and one of the bag of snacks was opened. I tried to call the front desk - no answer Very dissatisfied - especially when ur paying $259 a night for the room. read more
