Zack provided great service (also bonus points he had a Halloween theme going.) The breakfast was good, but the hash browns weren't fully cooked. Some of the potato pieces were still cold/raw. Came to the island for the weekend and had to have crab legs. All you can eat is right up my alley when I'm feeling particularly gluttonous. Ordered the fried pickles chips and jalapenos to start. We were disappointed that they didn't tell us they were out and brought fried spears instead. However, the breading was very good. The hush puppies were on point. Soft, pillowy, but crispy on the outside and paired with honey butter. Side salads were a pleasant surprise-spring mix, RIPE tomatoes, green peppers and onion, carrots, and croutons. I'm used to gross iceberg and hard tomatoes. The crab came out with my 2 sides (baked potato and cheese grits-hello carbs!). I'll be honest. I ate 1 bite of each side and decided crab had the higher priority. Then more crab came out. Then another plate. I finally reached my plateau and decided to be an adult and exercise personal control. Our server was amazing and never let us wait more than a couple of minutes for anything. She was very busy the entire duration of our visit. Restaurant is a little pricier than you might find in a place like Myrtle Beach ($43 for all you can eat), but that's to be expected in a smaller town. All in all, my family was content. We went for breakfast. The place is super clean and tidy. The eggs over easy were properly cooked , but they were square shaped. Not a complaint just the first time I saw it. I liked everything. The hash browns were a little different, sort of like mashed potatoes that had been fried with a nice crust. I really liked them my wife didn't so you might want to get the grits. read more

Overall: The Dunes Restaurant is a must visit location. We had a delightful meal with above par service. I recommend ordering a salad as they are fresh and a good light appetizer. My only regret would be buying the onion rings, and that we hadn't gone there for breakfast. The Dunes Restaurant was truly the pinnacle of our vacation to the Outer banks. While vacationing in Nags Head we sampled many different foods that the coastal community had to offer and The Dunes was honestly the best food I'd had the entire trip. As we walked in the servers were friendly and welcoming with about a five minute wait for our party of five. The building is aesthetically pleasing with tropical and wood themed decorations but also a hint of elegance as one would see in a higher end establishment. Appetizer: Two baskets of hush puppies were served to us as we sat down which were absolutely to die for and plenty to go around. Our group ordered onion rings along with the hush puppies. The onion rings were the only bad part of our experience as they weren't very crunchy and had an artificial taste. However The Caesar salad that I ordered was, in my opinion, the best I have ever had. With a good blend of dressing to cheese to lettuce and soft croutons, the salad was perfectly balanced and a lovely appetizer portion. Entree: For my entree I ordered the spaghetti which came with four small pieces of garlic bread around my plate. The spaghetti was thinly cut, lathered in well made mushroom and red sauce and very filling. Dipping the bread in the sauce was especially good. We have eaten at this family owned restaurant for decades. The fried shrimp and flounder are perfectly lightly breaded. Hush puppies with every meal are hot and served with honey butter. Our server Jen was so prompt and efficient and Patrick the family owner manager stopped by the table to make sure our party of 10 has everything we needed. The beach theme throughout the restaurant adds to the overall experience. We will be back. read more

We were hoping for some great tasting fresh local flounder & shrimp but neither tasted fresh & the portions were small. I didn't even finish my shrimp, it was rubbery & didn't have any good flavor. We were starving one evening and remembered that the Dunes had an amazing breakfast spread, and that we ALWAYS had great meals there int he past. We walked in with 4 kids right before closing. We were not turned away! We were greeted with smiles and seated in a perfect spot where we could stretch out. We ordered apps, dinks and tons of food! We had a grat meal! Our waitress was very patient and even said yes to a to-go burger for someone back at our cottage, even though they had been closed for some time after we arrived. Great service with a cute little gift shop to browse for a shirt wait. Biscuits are giant and amazing. My husband is a biscuits and gravy afficiando, and he said it was the best biscuit he has ever had. The Dolphin breakfast was "delicious" per the 8 year old. My 5 yr old loved her chocolate chip hotcakes and ate every bite, including licking the melted chocolate chips off her plate. read more

They're in full summer season swing. Making money. I get it. But they're not worried about the food they put out. Disappointing buffet today. Eggs looked so runny and watery on the buffet that I couldn't bring myself to order the buffet. It literally looked like a pan of egg soup. It was gross. So disappointed, I ordered a breakfast from the menu. When my meal arrived, the omelet was good. Pancakes good. But the hash brown had clearly been rushed. I was essentially served raw cut potatoes that had been warmed through, but hardly cooked. Today was an extreme disappointment. I hope management reads this. You guys know how to do better. Your kitchen was being extremely lazy today, and took no pride whatsoever at what they sent out the door. read more

I saw some great reviews and thought to try the restaurant. Restaurant was half empty but there was a 30 minute wait. I know this was due to staff shortages, but our server was still completely overwhelmed by the number of tables she had. Everything took a long time to get to our table. I chose the pick two which is requested to be both broiled or fried. So I wanted shrimp and scallops both broiled. They refused to do the shrimp broiled, but also refused to fry the shrimp and broil the scallops. So I got broiled scallops and flounder. Flounder tasted old and I left it on my plate. Scallops were ok. Presentation and portion size were lacking. Husband ordered a flounder dinner and also ordered lettuce and cheese on the side to add to the fish. Waitress said it was ok but no extras were delivered. We didn't complain because we didn't want to wait another 20 minutes for the waitress to get the correction and bring it to the table. My meal came later than everyone else's, refills were few and far between, and food was way overpriced for quality and portions. Maybe breakfast is different, but I found this restaurant to be overpriced, unimpressive, short staffed, and just underwhelming. Will not be going back. read more

This was a great find. It's a great place with various seating options and a variety of gift shop items. Arod (sorry, if I spelled his name incorrectly) was very nice and attentive. I was hoping to get their prime rib special, but they were sold out. I ordered the fried shrimp with fries and cole slaw instead. My husband ordered the chicken and waffles. The hush puppies were great, but different from typical hush puppies. These were a bit sweeter and much lighter, so definitely not made with corn meal. I actually like both styles of hush puppies, but these were a welcome change. My fried shrimp were also prepared much differently than typical fried shrimp - shrimp that is heavily battered, etc. The shrimp I had (15 in all) were flash fried with just a dusting of flour, which I actually liked because sometimes the batter on fried shrimp can be too heavy and greasy. These were not, and I actually finished all my shrimp. The fries were okay, not crispy. The cole slaw was delicious. My husband said his chicken and waffles were the best he has ever had because the chicken was very moist and not dry at all. The waffle was light and crispy, and the syrup worked well with both the chicken and waffle. read more

A group of 5 of us went here for breakfast on a Wednesday, granted it is prime vacation time so we did expect it to be busy but we didn't expect to be as disappointed as we were. First of all, we were seated immediately because their rule is it the entire party isn't present you don't get seated. The party of 5 that had been lead to their table was only 4 so once they got to the table the host immediately took them back, told them they couldn't be seated, & gave away their table. I understand protocol but it seemed pretty rude to take them to the table first then realize they're not there and give away their table in front of them. We were seated in the bar area which seemed nice at first because it wasn't nearly as crowded as the dining area. But when our server came to introduce himself he immediately told us not to order from the menu (which we all planned on doing) and to get the buffet because the kitchen had only 2 people and they were going pretty slow. Nobody planned on the buffet but since our server made it pretty clear which option was better (or which he preferred) we went for it. It was not worth the price. The drinks were good but that's about it. The worst part of the experience was the bathrooms. Appearance wise they looked nice and new and clean but the smell was so horrid just from the entry area we should've known to question the general cleanliness of the place. Overall I would not recommend this place for breakfast to anyone, maybe drinks but that's about it. read more

In North Carolina for the weekend for a weeding, I received a recommendation to go here for brunch this morning. My group of 11 was greeted and seated very quickly. Service was rather slow but only because there was one person waiting multiple tables. Despite the slow pace, the service we had was wonderful, the waitress constantly refilled our coffees and always checked up on us. For brunch, I ordered the crab omelette which came with a side of pancakes. I also ordered 2 biscuits on the side. The omelette was amazing, the crab was definitely the star of the show amidst the soft fluffy goodness of the eggs. The pancakes were fluffy, made perfectly. The amount of food that was provided left everyone stuffed. I will definitely give this restaurant another visit when I return to Kill Devil Hills. read more

Our sever was excellent. But we got here 1/2 hour before closing, so the food was cold and they ran out of some items. We got the shrimp dip. It was bland and cold. Needed to add salt. The homemade chips that came with it that could have been good if they were warm. I got the fish tacos. They were okay. Not fried mahi mahi like I'm used to. It was a cold grilled cut. Too much southwest sauce. My friend got the clam strips dinner. It was cold too. The hush puppies--my friend swears they are not hushpuppies, but donuts--were the saving grace of the meal. So good!!! Had a great experience with my family. Had a big group of 11. Stopped at the bar before being seated bartender was nice beers fair priced. Had Mackenzie as a server for the night. I think I found my new dinner destination when I come to the Outer Banks! I got fried shrimp, grits and a baked potato, all of which were delicious! The hush puppies were also incredible and the butter that accompanied it was superb. Now, back to the grits. I literally have thought about these grits since I left the restaurant. They were the best grits I've ever had!!!! Slightly cheesy and creamy perfection. They are slightly pricy, especially for the amount of food you get. For that, I would have given them only 4 stars, but the grits made up for it so for that, I give 5 starts. The staff was also friendly and they have a cute little shop there, too. Good portions, decent prices and attentive staff. The fish sandwich is really big. Good sweet tea and fresh seafood. Had the breakfast this time (twice) and I was happy I did. The breakfast buffet was constantly being replenished and the sweet potato biscuits are awesome!!! The hotcakes are huge and the omelet's are always a hit. Be careful, because Sunday's are really busy but we had 15 people and still only had to wait like 20 min. I will continue to come here when I am in OBX. read more

Note: this is a carry-out review but I think it applies. Very disappointed in a generally poor meal. Clam chowder was not a chowder at all. It was a thin soup that tasted ok but not as advertised. My broiled flounder was dry as a bone. Crab cakes are full of filler with little crab in them. Popcorn shrimp tasted "fishy" and my daughter could barely eat them. But the staff were nice at pick up. Sorry but can't recommend at all, at least if you are doing pick-up during COVID. read more

Favorite meal of our trip! A couple locals recommended Dunes to me and I see why! Our friendly was super friendly and very patient with us. The food tasted amazing.
