Good place to showcase new talents. draws a well rounded crowds. Drinks are OVERPRICED! And the bartenders are waaaay to sloooow. And that annoying dude with the long hair that constantly taps you on the shoulders to walk by. The most disorganized place to see a band ever. Do not go here unless you REALLY REALLY love the band. Just one of many examples: A secret show. Website says "Get here early. First come first served, so do not get out of line." We get there an hour and a half early. Get in line. Do not get out of line. Wait 2 hours in line. Make it to the front of line. Are told: Only people with wristbands will be allowed in." People walk up with wristbands they've received earlier in the day. They walk around us and are let in! I'm not saying we should have been ahead of them. I'm saying that a venue that actually cares about it's customers is going to makes sure people aren't wasting their time in line for no reason. To top it off, the skanky girl behind us was being "helpful" (read: a jackass) with quips such as "Oh, I know. Stupid secret shows. Stupid venues that host them." Cocky because she had a wristband and slept with the band leader when she was lucky enough to meet him when he was drunk enough to actually be interested. Going to the Echo is just like being that girl. Drink enough and you might be able to plug your nose and pretend you're enjoying being used and disregarded. read more

Would have put 5 stars, but the drinks were super pricey. Great place, started out at the echoplex by accident and they excorted us to the right place for our concert. THe patio are was really nice, great large place to mingle. Sound quality was VERY good for each band. Very intimate feel of the place. Definitely am going to go back there!! read more

Bartender took it upon himself to charge extra for tip on my credit card... pretty ridiculous when I specifically filled in the tip amount myself, and it came out different on my statement. Great place to see a show and they always get great artists to perform - it's rare to find a concert venue where you can pretty much just show up, any night of the week, any day of the year, and regardless of who's performing, be sure that the artist will be someone awesome and the show will be really great. Spent the best $20 of my life today. This morning while doing errands I came across a post on Twitter. It said to get down to the El Rey Theater right away. When I did the line was around the corner so I got in it and waited. Two hours went by and they came by with buckets of their own lottery tickets. Some time later they listed the winning numbers and I wasn' t one of them, but I waited some more with three friends I met in line and after the winners were admitted, sure enough, the started letting those who waited in. When we got inside the line wound around inside of the El Rey and it took us another two hours to get over to where they were giving out tickets and wristbands. By the time I got my ticket it was 4pm and after getting our picture taken for the Rolling Stones website I rushed home to walk and feed Miss Kiva before rushing back to the Echoplex in the Echo Park area of Los Angeles for the show. It was the opening performance of the Rolling Stones latest tour and the venue, The Echo, only held a thousand people. I ended up 10 feet from the stage slightly right of center. It couldn't have been any better. The Stones were tight and amazing. I was so close Mick threw water on me twice as he slung it across the crowd. Mick Taylor even sat in on guitar on several songs playing slide and lead on his sunburst Les Paul with Bigsby. Keith and Ron were great and Charlie was there steady as usual. An utterly amazing show! Can't believe I was lucky enough to be a part of it. read more

Came here on a Wednesday night to see Alain Johannes (What Is This?, Eleven, Queens Of The Stone Age), Steve Kilbey (The Church), Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs, Twilight Singers), and Mark Mcguire (Emeralds {I think}) - freaking awesome show. The venue staff were pretty civil - something I'm not used to seeing at rock clubs. I like this place and had a good time here. Not understanding the negative reviews but could be that the music and demographic for those other shows were a bit more rowdy and sketchy. Yeah - drinks are expensive. Parked at a parking meter on Park Avenue right after eight (when the parking meter reign ends) so it was a freaking good deal. Then walked to the club a hop, skip and a jump away. On the way there I noticed Sunset Boulevard actually goes OVER Glendale Boulevard so THAT is why the Echo is "upstairs" and Echoplex on Glendale Boulevard is considered "downstairs". Not a native Angeleno so that part confused me on the website. It all made sense when I looked down onto Glendale boulevard from the Sunset "overpass". Oh yeah. Even though a show may "sell out" - sometimes they have a few leftover for sale on the day OF the show. In this case, I was able to purchase from somebody whose friends flaked out (no shows). Muy bueno, amigos! Would definitely come here again!!!! read more

The Echo provides a good service but also a disservice to the live music community. They provide great exposure to lots of up-and-coming bands and the space is fine. Unfortunately the sound is HORRIBLE. That's the disservice. Please Echo, you're a LIVE MUSIC venue. Spend a little money, and replace/fix the muddy sound system and mix. What is going on?? I recently attended the great Middle Kids show with friends, and while the band is superb, we could barely make out the singer's vocals. This was not an isolated sound incident and is recurring. Will be happy to give you five stars if you can upgrade the sound. read more

Cane here for the Gavin Turek show and the bartender was amazing. I didn't get her name but she was the platinum blonde chick. Awesome personality, wasn't pushy even in the midst of the rush, and remembered my drink order every time I approached the bar. Security was on point, especially to my man who was freezing outside. Went here for one of the free Grand Ole Echo shows that they have on Sundays. No complaints. Music was good. Parking was free and easy on the street right outside the club. Getting in was hassle free. The show I went to seemed to draw an older crowd (people in their 30's and 40's). That's kind of expected when you consider the music that's being played is country-ish rock. I'd go back. read more

Worst venue ever!! First of all security didn't let friend in with temporary drivers license as she had lost her original. (The girl is 37!!) Ticket didn't even say age limit show or to bring license or passport. Worst sound system of all LA clubs by far. Artists should never book here. read more

I love the Echo and the Echoplex. I probably like the Echo a little bit better because it is grungy and has a warehouse feel to it. Most of my favorite bands come through here, and I cannot count how many shows I have been to. At least 2 per month. The sound system is great and I have only seen one horrible show here (John Weir? I can't remember his name but he royally blew). I have had transcendental experiences here because it was just that great. You can order vegan pizza from here, the drink prices aren't too shabby. I just wish people would dance more. This isn't the venue's fault though, it is image obsessed and insecure hipsters from Silverlake's fault. Dancing sets you free people! Try it sometime. My husband and I are often the only two people dancing in the whole place. Do I care? Nope. Oh and Jessie, the door guy, is the BOMB. He is one of my favorite people ever. That is all. read more

One of my favorite music venues in Los Angeles. It's smaller than the Echoplex but I still love it very much. Most of the shows I go to are either at The Echo or Echoplex. Bathrooms are super clean, seating along the wall. Air conditioning also keeps the room cool when people are dancing their butts off. read more

I went to the Echo to see Man or Astroman? and Octopus Project. Great bands, but the sound was absolutely awful. I can't say if it's like that all the time and I don't know who's at fault, but I considering a lot of good bands play there, I'll assume it's an anomaly. That is until the next time I go. read more

I've been here twice. Once was a few months ago to see Das Racist and the other was last night to see Riff Raff. They were both really fun shows with a trendy crowd who just wanted to dance. Let me just say, I'm not a music snob or anything but if the sound quality is bad then it sort of ruins the experience for me. The venue is small, but you'd think it was the size of a stadium with how loud the speakers were. Plus the bass was so heavy that it sometimes over powered the mics. Both times the artists were really good so that helped, but the shows would have been perfect if I didn't have to cover up my ears. Still, the artist and crowd were having a good time. I had no problems there so I will be back again with ear plugs! read more

I love going here for bootie, and I've had a great time last night, but I look at my credit card and they overcharged me for drinks! My receipt was less than what I was charged! And they can get away with it because it was only a few dollars, but that's really effed up! And the bar tender was not nice! He gave us 4 drinks when we ordered 3 and asked which was which, to which he told us one of the drinks was for the girl next to us. How were we supposed to know? He got pissed because my friend already started to drink it so he had to make another one. Again how were we supposed to know? He just handed us 4 drinks. Next time I'm going to pre game or go to a bar because the service is not good at all here. Bootie is still awesome and fun. read more

I've always enjoyed the echo in the past. Last several visits the bartenders have taken twice as long, seem to ignore me, and mixed drinks weren't that good. Haven't seen Joaquin there. That guy always mixed good drinks and provided great service. read more

this place either needs a more original name or at least have a big sign that says THE ECHO outside (i guess it's trendier to be mysterious.) my friends insisted they knew where this place was but we ended up at the echoPLEX instead. after spending ten bucks unnecessarily at the wrong place for parking and entrance (and having my friend being turned down for an expired id) i realized that the people i was meeting up with were nowhere to be seen. so i found out after asking several people that the echo was up on sunset. i walk up the "piss stairs" which they are affectionately referred to as and saw a huge line outside of an unmarked building and crossed my fingers that it was the right place. i had no more cash at this point and had to ask my sister's boyfriend to lend me $5 at the door. the bouncer and the ticket lady FREAKED OUT that he came out quickly to hand me money and walked back inside. i thought they were gonna kick him out. she was such a bitch about it, too. once i fiinallly got inside the music was really good and everyone was dancing. got a few drinks and really started to get into the music. guns and bombs and acid girls had amazing beats that were awesome to dance to! nice roomy smoking patio in the back. verrrry cool people to dance with and talk to. all in all a good night despite initial frustrations. read more
