This has got to be one of my favorite nightlife spots in Los Angeles! It's a 1920s dream! If you're looking for something unique, classy (hello vintage!), visually stimulating, with great drinks and free entertainment (this was one of my favorite spots in LA to perform!)- you have to visit The Edison. The ambiance is everything. It's like a turn of the century, electric, moody, speakeasy vibe. I can't even really find the words to describe it, you just have to go. After dinner @ The Redbird, me and my homie walked a half block to get to the Edison to meet with some LA peeps we met. Edison is located in the basement of an old power plant factory and entrance is in an alley. We stood in line for about 5-7 mins and saw one of the door guys walking by checking shoe styles as gym shoes aren't allowed...also make sure you're dressed nice to hang here. Once inside, there are beautiful ladies there to take your pic if you like and then there is the stairway that leads to the fun. Once downstairs you see the main bar as well as some of the preserved machinery the building once used. There are some separate rooms as well as stages in which we saw dancers performing that night. We also got to experience some live music here. Very sexy scenery with good, friendly people and the old fashioned is very good! Housed in a former electric factory, enter through an alley without signage (look for a bouncer by the entrance will be your only giveaway), down a long set up of stairs, and back into time. If it is your first time you will be blown away by the size of the venue and every artifact that has been preserved in every corner. You can order small bites that can be shared while you enjoy a classic cocktail. They also have live music and performances on certain nights. Some tips are that you want to dress up a bit as this one of the few places that has a dress code. Also, they often get rented out for private events so you want to call ahead and make sure it's not a wasted trip. I believe it's something like $50 minimum per person for drinks and food. Its not that difficult to fulfill the minimum when the drinks are $15 a piece. It's been a while since I've had the food but the drinks are spectacular! If you can reserve seats near the stage that's also a major plus because everyone crowds in to see the Eddies(don't miss their performances!!!). There are no seats available if you don't get a table unless you want to sit in the limited seating near the bathroom. The girl at the front was nice; thank you for cutting us some slack. Table service (if you sit down and order food) is $50/person. The girl who took away our menu was pretty rude, even after we told her we wanted to order. She told us we had to order at the bar and bring it to the table ourselves. My bf waited at the bar but the guy brought our food to the table to my surprise. I was STARVING and ordered the Truffle Mac & Cheese, and the fried sandwiches with banana & Nutella. They were expensive but delicious. Bathrooms are a bit hard to find. You have to go through the dance floor. Music is good (they played Billie Jean, Lady Marmalade, etc.) The lady at the bathroom kept asking for a cash tip when I washed my hands. I didn't take lotion or anything. She is extremely pushy. Always a good time at Edison. The last time I was here was about 4 years ago. It seemed a bit less crowded than I remember especially for a Friday night, but I prefer it that way. There were plenty of seats to sit in and walk around comfortably without bumping into people. The dancers are great. This is hands-down one of my favorite speakeasies in Los Angeles! Every time I go there I am transported back to the 1920s and can enjoy an original daiquiri just like Gerald Fitzpatrick would! The staff is very friendly and accommodating and I honestly recommend going earlier in the evening rather than later. They also have a free show. And get this there is also a lady that dresses up as the absinthe and has absinthe shots available for purchase! We came here a little before 9 to meet up a friend. My friend didn't tell us that there was a dress code and cover. So we walked into a ambush. We didn't really know so I'll admit we were normally dressed for girls night out, but under dress for this place. That was our bad. Cover, $10 on a Saturday night, no biggie. As we walked in one of the girls taking cover immediately stared us down and stereotyped us. And to top it off, underdressed. She immediately said with the most bitchest voice, "if you guys aren't gonna pay step to the side for other guest" we all look back and no one was there. I don't know what her f-Ing problem was but I was taking money out of my purse when this snobbish ass bia was so rude. Sorry that you have to be a cover girl and didn't make the cut to be a burlesque girl. Because those burlesque girls were so nice! They did the show with a smile and even came down to take pictures with people and greeted people. Wow. Downtown LA's not so hidden gem. After hearing so much about this place, I finally got to check it out on Friday night. I knew it would a special place but that still did not quite prepare me for this one of a kind place. Located in the middle of Harlem Alley, one who has never been here would never expect to find such a place like this. My friend and I arrived before nine and so the line to get in was not to long. There was hardly any wait and the bouncer quickly checked my ID. He said "cheers," it was off to a whole new world known as The Edison. It was with much anticipation and excitement as we descended down the stairs. The dim atmosphere, hanging lights all gave a very classy feel from the start. Once in the basement, the 1920s emphasis is all around. It's a pretty big place with one main bar area and another bar off to the side. There's a small stage for performances, a dj playing tunes to the side and various little lounges. One of the lounges is quite a sight because it has old generators from when this place used to be a power plant. They've got quite a menu of various eats! There's deviled eggs, wings, steak and short ribs! Yum! The drink menu is extensive and was very decently priced ($14 for their signature drinks, $8 for their non-alcoholic). I got a Natasha from their Sobering Spirits menu and it was one of the best Virgin drinks I've ever had. It has raspberry, lemon and pineapple. Further into the night, they have performances. First show of the night was an impressive acrobat show. Complete with dramatic gestures and music, a guy twirled and did an acrobat act. It was intriguing, entertaining and a good show. There was always something interesting going on through the night. The atmosphere is just something different. They even have a waitress dressed as an absinthe fairy selling colorful potion drinks. Crowd wise. It was a mix. There was folks in their twenties to older couples. In a way, it was good because you didn't have a rowdy crowd but it wasn't too uptight either. *** Please read the dress code before deciding to come here *** Do not get the Edison (underground bar) confused with Southern California Edison (electricity supply company). This underground basement used to be LA's 1st power plant (built in 1910) and now this space has transformed into 1920's theme cocktail bar / lounge. Parking: Valet parking is available, but I just parked at one of the best kept secret in Little Tokyo - Aiso Parking Lot (http://www.yelp.com/biz/aiso-parking-lot-los-angeles) - just three blocks away from the Edision and $3 flat rate after 5 PM. The catch? You must get out of the parking structure before it closes or else you'll have to pick up your car next day (the lot closes at 2 AM on Friday / Saturday night). Fees: $10 cover charge on Saturday (including both walk-in and reservation). For each table reservation, each guest must spend minimum of $25 on weekday (Wed / Thurs) and $50 on weekend (Fri / Sat). The downside of not reserving a table? There's a very good chance you will be standing all night long because this place gets pretty packed after 9~10 PM ... so good luck on finding an available table if you just walk-in here. Dress code: For men, collared shirt and dress shoes are minimum. No T-shirt, flip-flop, tennis shoes, torn / baggy jeans, and collarless shirts. Atmosphere: Dim lighting and classy (I think that's just another word for clean). The whole space seems pretty big at first, but you won't feel that way anymore once it starts to get crowded. There's a small dance floor in front of the show stage. Absinthe fairy will push a cart around with shots of housemate elixir ($8 a bottle). Oh and please watch your steps - I noticed one or two spots in the bar where you could potentially trip over if you are not careful. Burlesque dance shows: if you stay at the bar late enough, you will get to see the burlesque dance show (I believe showtime are 9:45 PM, 10:45 PM, and 11:45 PM). The entire performance lasted 9 minutes and the show was refreshing, but please don't set high exceptions for this rated-R dance show. *** Scottish Salmon Sashimi (Fuji Apple, avocado, red onions, and bonito flakes in a spicy ponzu sauce - $14): Took about 10-15 minutes before sashimi arrived. Salmon was surprisingly good - like 4-star legit Japanese restaurant quality good. Salmon sashimi almost melt in my mouth and the combination of Fuji apple & spicy ponzu sauce were truly one of its kind. (4.5/5) *** Strictly speaking, Edison is a solid 4-star underground bar, but I'll give 5-star for their exceptional bar food (definitely one of the best bar food I've had) and my bartender was very friendly and efficient. Absolutely one of the best spots, if not THE coolest, in Los Angeles. I recently got to experience this 1920s-style underground bar lounge on an uncrowded Thursday night. There was a live jazz band, and a projection of an old film on the wall, and incandescent bulbs hanging from the ceiling as you descended three flights of metal stairs. We arrived after 8PM and there was no line or cover to get in, but on weekend nights I hear it's much busier and there is a cover. The bar menu has cocktails for around $15, including absinthe, for which this place is known. I was eagerly hoping to spot the green fairy, who walks around letting you sample absinthe, but she was nowhere to be found that night. Instead, we were treated to elaborately dressed burlesque dancers who appeared on the stage one at a time and danced along with the live music. It was my first ever introduction to burlesque and quite a treat! I was even more excited when my friend and I wandered behind a curtain to a backroom and noticed rows of metal contraptions sitting in a seemingly secret area where no one else was. We checked with the staff and they said we were allowed back there. We couldn't figure out what the metal contraptions were and were told they were generators. Apparently the Edison originally was the first private power plant in LA and was abandoned until several years ago when it was totally rebuilt into the club it is today! This backroom, when not busy, is the perfect place to step away for a few minutes to get away from the loud main room with the live music. I tried to broadcast a periscope from the generator room, since I do livestream video around LA showing people the coolest hotspots, but alas we were so deep in the basement, there wasn't a shred of signal on my phone. One thing to keep in mind is the entrance is hidden. Both times I've come here my Uber has missed the entrance. Luckily the 2nd time I knew where we were going so I could prep the driver. The first time, however, it took 2 trips around the block to realize the entrance was down the little back alleyway. the bartenders here are all extremely friend and make a mean cocktail. You're going to definitely taste the booze! The appetizers being passed around the night were also delicious and plentiful. I'm not sure if they were provided by The Edison or an outside company, but if they were from The Edison I tip my hat to them! People get dressed up, and not in the typical LA "club wear," but tweet suits and flapper dresses. I just adore all of it. They'll have performers do a 5 minute entertainment bit. It's pretty neat. Some nights they'll have a burlesque dance on top of the bar. Some night there will be someone twirl on fabric doing some acrobatic moves. Very entertaining. I just enjoy the atmosphere. Older crowd ages 25+, more for the mature age. There is also a cigar lounge at the entrance. Strictly for cigar smoking, not your cigarette smokers. You ain't classy enough... :p JK. Otherwise, this was a mediocre outing. The waitress definitely didn't want to be there and actually brought down our party's mood as every single person commented on her attitude. Someone should look into boosting the morale of your employees or better training. The drinks were very unreliable. We got a few of the "one for the road" at different times and it was completely different each time. The first one was good, the second one was too sweet (even though made by the same guy), the third one I tried didn't even taste like the same drink. My friend said the female bartender was reading off what was included in it while attempting to make it. I've seen plenty of burlesque in the past and this was the most mild and tame show, the dance sequence was simple choreography, and I swear it lasted no more than 10 minutes. Definitely not worth the cover. Second, when we were greeted by the hostess she mentioned if we wanted to eat, seating for the show would require at least a $50 minimum per person. We were fine with that as we wanted the whole experience, however we got sat in some back corner not in sight of the stage. When we politely mentioned to our waitress that the hostess had indicated we'd be seated in sight of the stage, she was very rude and immediately snapped it was our fault for not reserving in advance. We left the seating right after and went back to the bar where we found you can still order food without the minimum order requirement. We ordered the mushroom flatbread and bone marrow. The mushroom flatbread was akin to eating dry cardboard with mushroom on top. No flavor, minimal toppings, stale taste. The bone marrow came with only a single serving and for some reason some giant piece of bread. There wasn't even enough marrow to eat with the bread. It was good, but overly priced for what is typically considered a half serving. I order bone marrow often and 9 times out of 10 usually you get two pieces at least. I was disappointed. The only redeeming aspect of our experience was the bar. I didn't take photos of the drinks, as they weren't anything particularly special, but we tried a few different cocktails and they were all pretty solid. The venue itself is also aesthetically pleasing, but that doesn't justify the costs, poor food quality, and rude servers. This was my first experience at The Edison. Who doesn't love the glam and glitz of an old school Hollywood-style bar/ lounge serving up some seriously high-quality booze- from absinthe & artisinal cocktails, to craft beers & sweet non-alcoholic bevvies- and sporting a hefty menu packed with delicious bar food with an upscale twist? This particular spot was actually renovated from an old private power plant, and has an almost Steampunk-esque vibe, with strong connotations of the Industrial Revolution, and features live music, burlesque shows, & comfy seating accommodations- if you can manage to snag some. I came here for a pre-Halloween bash, and the place was hopping from the beginning, with live music- complete with a devilish orchestra- costumed Angelinos, several big screens situated on different walls playing classic horror movies from the black-and-white days, like Frankenstein, and even stilt-walkers playing pranks on unsuspecting drinkers at the bar, (all in good fun, of course). I can personally attest to the food being delicious, the drinks being classy & potent, and the prices being, more or less, fair ($14 per cocktail). I highly recommend the California Fresh Flatbread; it pairs perfectly with anything you might be drinking. Overall, this place has all the qualities of the perfect quintessential spot to enjoy nightlife in the big city. The only downside is, as with any popular joint in LA, there's the hassle of having to find and pay for parking, having to pay to get in, and then spending a small fortune on food and drinks once you're inside. I'm pretty sure I didn't have the typical experience, but here it goes... Invited to a swanky 1920's themed costume birthday party held here. We Ubered it knowing there would be plenty of libations. (but, having parked here a couple weeks prior, valet is $10). Upon arrival, they checked our IDs and we had no cover (saw it was $10) and we were guided down a steep staircase to another hostess stand. Upon that check-in we were led to a back area, called The Generator Lounge, that had been cordoned off for the party. There was security to ensure only party members entered the area. Ambiance? Does not have the Art Deco of Cicada, but it still has the cool factor, located in the basement of the Higgins Building amidst the old power plant. Old time black & white movies flickering on walls throughout the place, servers dressed from the time period, giant generators throughout the area, brick walls, metal tables. My drink of the night? The Mistress (how apropos). Vodka, Lemon, Pomegranate, Prosecco. Seemed like a good idea at the time, sweet and easy to drink; however, the next day, I'm regretting it and wanting to completely forget it ever happened, yet it still lingers. As if that wasn't enough, the absinthe fairy stopped by and had one of those, too. Food? Party provided little snacks all night. Shrimp Cocktail-jumbo shrimp Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup-I loved this little snack! Meat & cheese boards-standard Ahi Slider-good Desserts were circling around, but didn't try any (like I said, too many mistresses.) Service? FANTASTIC. The servers were friendly and constantly on the go to please our party. Our service was definitely 5 stars. Show? There were 3 shows throughout the night, the first one at 9:45pm. I went to check it out, but everyone was crowded near the stage to watch and I wasn't impressed with the choreography; it seemed they were just going for the ambiance of 1920's dancers. Didn't check out any after that first one. Plus, security stands there yelling at people to keep an area clear when there isn't any space to be made. Came here on a Saturday night and there was a cover charge of $10 around 10pm (boo). BUT, it was my first time here and I love the atmosphere. It's located downstairs, and is quite roomy, with people dressed up a little more than casual. There was a burlesque show (which was cool because who doesn't love shows at a bar?!), and ladies dressed like fairies served absinthe from a cart. Such a great ambience and had friendly bouncers/security (unlike other places in LA). Highly recommend for a fun night out in LA! read more

This place is themed to perfection. The interior and it's decor totally transports you to the 1920s. Plus I really like how you enter from the alley and walk down a flight of stairs to get downstairs to the lounge/bar. So mysterious. We had a reservation there for a party of 12, so we didn't have to pay the $20 entrance fee, BUT each person in our party had to spend $50 on either food or drinks. Anywho, the drinks were all very tasty and I really really enjoyed the pimms cup $14. It was super refreshing! The music the DJ was playing was good but remember everything is themed here, so all he played were oldies, classics, and funk. You are not going to find any lil jon tracks or twerking here. I felt like I was being transported to another era, it feels historic while remaining hip and cool yet not so hip and cool it's uninviting. We were carded by the big and friendly guy at the door and given a wooden token at the front podium - good for the drink of the day (I think we paid .35). You walk down the stairs and are transported to this very beautiful space full of rich dark woods, leather couches, dim lighting, bronze walls and movies playing on a brick wall. Big beautiful bar with hooks underneath to hold your purse, bags.....There is a stage where they have live performances as well. We had the signature cocktail for .35 cents - I believe it was a whiskey sour and then opted for a Champagne cocktail - trying not to mix our alcohol as we had already had a bottle of wine. I can't believe this was downtown L.A. It was so well done I really felt as if I were in another city, another time....Next time I'm trying the menu. read more
