At least a third of a cup, right? Nope. You get about three ounces of syrup. That's the amount of syrup people typically use for a silver-dollar stack of pancakes. But never fear. Papa Pete's was disappointing. When we arrived (10 am on a Saturday) they told us food would be a 30 minute wait, which was fine so we took a table. We ordered coffee (which tasted like Folger's, it was mediocre) and water. We placed an order for 3 eggs, hash browns, and white toast along with a giant banana pancake. We were told the giant pancake would take 20 extra minutes. I said that was fine and said we could take the dishes as they were ready, the waitress said "that's not how we do things here, they all come out together." We waited for 45 minutes and received the smaller items, and the waitress said the pancake was getting put on the grill now so it would be another 20 minutes, even though she had told us everything would come out together. The smaller items were fine, but unseasoned. The giant pancake came out after 1 hour total and it was fine, but it could have had more bananas. One small container of maple syrup was provided for the pancake and extra small containers are $2 each, so use sparingly. read more

Everything we ordered from the pancakes, to the breakfast burrito, to the homemade corned beef hash was incredible. What we may have enjoyed more was the owner Kathy's hospitality, though. I may have only been passing through between NY and NH, but this diner feels like home. We were welcomed like old friends that have been too busy to stop in. Not only was our waitress amazing, the owner was also quick to attend our needs. The Christmas Eve specials included a Monte Cristo, and it took me back to my childhood. The service was very friendly. The owner is very welcoming. This place is an authentic Vermont breakfast experience. It is in a rundown little drafty building with pictures of guests all over the walls. Locals were there discussing their truck problems and drinking soda with their giant pancakes at 8am to fuel their day of hard work ahead. They are known for their giant pancakes. We shared the adult/kid size and it was huge. Their giant pancakes are the size of a medium pizza and could easily feed a whole family! They give you real maple syrup in a small container but it went further than we expected as we dipped rather than poured as recommended by the owner. The pancake was very thick and dense. My husband prefers fluffy, light, crispy pancakes but I loved the thickness of it. I must say, however, the best thing I had was the corn-beef hash. My favorite place to eat out. Great atmosphere, the staff are warm and welcoming. They talk and share stories and make it inviting. The food is outstanding! I am still unsure how they make their home fries but they are crispy on the outside and like melt in your mouth mash potatoes on the inside. You have to try when you go, you will be missing out if you don't. Everything else tastes amazing and is fresh and always looks great. The maple syrup they have is also worth noting. While I have tried countless "real" maple syrup I have never been a fan except theirs. It is not overly sweet and is great with French toast, pancakes, or whatever floats your boat. We were spending a fall weekend in the area and ate outside, which in and of itself was so kind of the waitress because she was the only one working that morning. She brought out a treat for our dog, and just was so, so kind and funny, fantastic service. Beyond the great service, the giant pancakes (and I do mean giant) were so yummy, as was the bacon. I thought I reviewed this place before but apparently not. We stopped on the way back to NY from a ski trip to Okemo. It was a Sunday morning and the crowd was pretty light but that filled in a bit while we ate. From the street this place doesn't look very special and the interior decor is a bit outdated but the food was exactly what we were looking for. The menu isn't as big as many comparable diners but the offerings vary enough to keep everyone satisfied. Items from burgers to pancakes to reubens to a variety of egg based breakfasts. I had the philly cheese omelet and my wife had Poached eggs. Our son had a pbj which he devoured. The breakfast potatoes were excellent and the horse sauce on the side of my philly was a nice touch. Omelet was good and packed with meet and peppers. Poached eggs were cooked good as well. Food came quick but they had one waitress in duty who was super friendly but she was stretched thin. So while the food was on the good side of fair and pricing Very good, the one waitress won me over with her table side manner. She gets 5 Stars. Spoiler alert: no reflection on the food but the next sentence may spoil your appetite. Our four year old was very tired from a long weekend and choking a bit from his allergies. He choked so much that he vomited at the table a bit (before eating his entire sandwich) Without missing a beat, the waitress brought napkins and towels to help clean him up. He didn't make much of a mess but she made him and us all feel comfortable with the mishap. We found out she was a mother and school teacher so it made sense. I don't wish this on any of the future diners but I just needed to mention bc so many servers could have made a big deal, shamed or ignored what happened and this women stepped up. Pretty disappointing across the board. The building is grungy and rundown, which should have been my first clue to leave. Service was meh - the server/owner was much more invested in her conversation with other local business owners (the people who own The Local - which we will be boycotting moving forward based on that conversation). The conversation included some pretty gnarly details about the state of the building the diner is located in (apparently they share a landlord). Like I said, she was very invested in THAT convo. The giant pancake was good, but this is where the scale tipped completely in the wrong direction. For a massive, plate sized, extra fluffy pancake, we were provided a tiny deli cup of syrup....and then told if we wanted more we could buy it by the bottle. Are you kidding me?? You know you are a diner in VERMONT, right? The land of flowing maple? The rest of the food (bagels, hash, eggs and benedict) were basic, nothing to write home about and definitely not worth the bill at the end of the meal. Do yourself a huge favor and skip over to Iron Coffee in Hoosick Falls. Owner Mike Milliron makes every customer feel like the only person in the room. He renovated his building (it's gorgeous and so so clean), and he's doing great things with coffee (roasts his beans in house!). Papa Pete's of Bennington VT took over the Top Notch Diner over a year ago, which is located on the east edge of Bennington close to the junction of the Bennington Bypass (VT 279). They serve breakfast (all day) and lunch Thursdays-Sundays closing at 3PM, so it has been a challenge for me to stop here at the right time since I drive by here when they're already closed. The atmosphere inside is the same as its predecessor inside has the homey diner feel with booth seating, table seating, and lunch counter seating with kitchen in the back. The menu here sounds pretty appetizing offering the typical breakfast favorites (served all day) egg dishes, omelets, pancakes, French toast, homemade hash, homemade muffins & sourdough bread, home fries, Green Mountain Coffee and more. The lunch menu offers sandwiches, soups, salads, desserts, and more. They offer several posted daily specials as well as $5 breakfast and lunches on Fridays. The prices are fair, most items priced in the $5-$11 range. Recently, I had lunch here and was seated in a comfortable booth. I ordered an ice water and started out with a cup of hot minestrone soup ($2.50), which was out of this world and had small penne pasta, vegetables, & kidney beans in a hearty tasting tomato broth, great on a cold day. I decided to go with the BLT ($5.75) on toasted sourdough bread (add $1) served with a side (I chose mashed potatoes) and dill pickle chips. The food was up quickly. The homemade mashed potatoes were very good, which were chunky and soft and topped with homemade gravy. The BLT was very good too, which had crispy juicy bacon strips and the sourdough bread upgrade was definitely worth it! While I was eating, the owner was going around and taking pictures of customers at each table after they finished eating, to put up on their wall. I love pictures, but I was in Yelp mode and I try to stay discreet in all my reviews. I decided to get much of my food to go, cash out, and boogie. I still had a busy afternoon including a visit to the Bennington Museum. Overall, the food was standard looking, but very good tasting which counts for a lot in my reviews. The service was efficient and I'd return again if the place is open and I'm passing through town. What a great little find! Reservations needed! If our travels bring us back to southwestern Vermont, we will definitely revisit! Run by mother/daughter team. Super nice and hospitable and who also take the pandemic seriously and cautiously abide by the required procedures. That being said, we were lucky to grab an outside table for us and our 2 dogs, who were treated just as great as we were. I highly recommend this place. We had a multi meat sandwich that was a special and the huge blueberry pancake that we had to take home. This is large enough to be shared. Did a weekend girlfriend's trip to see the autumn foliage and stumbled upon this little gem. This family restaurant is operated by Cathy (mother) and Erica (daughter). You'll never meet two more funny, hospitable, lovely ladies. The food was delicious. Papa Pete's is known for their crazy big pancake. As big as a pizza pie. Many of us had the lumberjack breakfast, which included a smaller version of their giant pancake, and of course real Vermont maple syrup. Everything was delicious! Also try the Apple cider mimosas.
