When you have chickens you have 1 or 2 feed stores that you can go to that carry the brands that you like to give your feathery pet / egg producers. I have spoiled by girls with giving them several brands of organic chicken feed. At one point I was getting fresh milled feed delivered to my house on a monthly basis. When that delivery service stopped due to the company not offering it anymore I had to go search out for a replacement. I have always fed them Modesto Milling at various times in their lives. The only problem is that there are only 2 stores that carry it on a regular basis in a decent radius of my work or home and because of it they tend to run out pretty fast. The Feed Barn to the rescue. Again my girls are spoiled so they get the Modesto Milling organic layer crumble AND the organic whole grain which I mix them up in their feeder. I feel the demand for it has increased so I usually call them before hand to see if they have them in stock. If they happen to be out of it they always place an order for it to be in the following Tuesday (their delivery day). How awesome is that!!! They are close enough to work so I can go and grab some during my lunch hour and I swing by local eatery for some eats so its a win win! Not only do they have chicken feed but they have other essentials from pine shavings, dog/cat food, treats, other wild bird feeds, pet supplies, medication and more. The prices here are very reasonable and the lady that works here is awesome. Very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, i enjoy coming here and chitchatting. Another bonus is that the guy working in the back will load up your feed/shaving purchase into your vehicle. Look, I don't need to get involved with the political issues surrounding a particular employee. I don't care to get involved with people's opinions or viewpoints...that's their decision, not mine. Besides, it's a feed store, not a church. No one here is expressing their opinions on you while you're shopping, or picking up items. Every time I come in to grab things for my rabbit it's been nothing but an easy and pleasant experience. I'm in and out, grab a piece of candy from the dish at the register, and go about my day. I particularly like this store because it's well-stocked, and affordable. Plus, they're extremely close to where I live. So for me it's a win/win. When I first got stuck with bunny-caring, I did my research and found Feed Barn. Driving up, it seems like such a cute place with lots of charm. They have timothy, oat, orchard, and alfalfa hay in super-size paper grocery bags. Timothy is $4.99 (bale $36.99), oat $3.99, sweet + leafy (alfalfa) 3.99, orchard $4.99. Sometimes the hay comes with old grass, extra dust, or carrying some extra surprises like insects or dirt chunks. My pickiness shines when I peer between the holes of the top tape to check the hay quality. Bunnies like what they like. Service is just right and the place is one of the few cheapest places to get Carefresh litter, including the regular unscented brown paper version for $18. If you're in the Newport area, Feed Barn is the best you can get in terms of hay, litter (if you use it), and they carry Oxbow along with their own pellets. They accept credit cards too. Sometimes Petsmart will price match if you show them the UPC code and price of an item from a local competitor (you can even show them a picture taken from your phone camera). Pet Supply is good for getting bunny toys and distractions and carries Oxbow and Carefresh as well. However, if you don't mind driving, I'd go to Midway City Feed for my hay. What an amazing, affordable place! I stopped by to get some timothy hay for my rabbit because I found that all the hay I ordered online or bought in-store were made up of so much dust that it just wasn't edible for my bun. I got two big paper bags of timothy hay here for $4.99 each, which is a steal compared to what I pay for hay dust online or at pet stores. The hay is fresh and green, and my bunny loves it. Came here on a rainy day looking for hay for my guinea pigs and rabbit. We were totally confused because it looks like the inside of a barn. This place has everything leafy you could possibly need for your pets! They have various different types of hay (orchard, alfalfa, timothy, oat), and several gourmet type pellets! And you think that this specialty store would be expensive - IT'S NOT! A big bale of hay that would normally cost you 15 bucks at Petco only costs 5 bucks!?!??!?! It's ridiculous. They also sell stuff that normally isn't sold at the pet stores, like critical care soft food (stuff that you give your rabbit or guinea pig when they have GI stasis). The place is small, but accommodates your canine, feline, horsey, bunny, piggy, and bird needs! Do you live with a rabbit? I do. Do you buy Kaytee brand timothy hay, and alfalfa? I used to. Then I found the feed barn where for the same price as one of those little bags of hay or alfalfa you can get a grocery bag *stuffed* full of higher quality stuff for cheaper. Also the people who work there are fantastic. Also its down the street from my favorite taco joint. Also its cheaper and better. Also, its better. Also its cheaper. * I'm not sure how they stuff these bags because I get home, and I want to repackage the stuff into boxes for easy storage. The boxes are clearly bigger than the paper grocery bags, however the moment I open the bag its like a fountain of hay or grass or whatever. I live five minutes from the feed barn and I can't believe I didn't discover this place sooner. At first glance, the store was surprisingly small, but a quick stroll around the corner brought in a sense its homeliness and comfort. You don't feel quite as bombarded by the useless inventory like you would get from a conventional petstore as the Feed Barn only seems to carry a handful of pet accessories and the pet basics. Browsing the store was accompanied by a peaceful and friendly atmosphere created by the very refine, but unpolished decor. The owner was welcoming and knowledgeable, with a demeanor that showed she was eager to aid the welfare of your pet. I only purchased a bag of timothy hay here, but they also carry oat and leafy horse hay. The hay is bought in a bigger-than-your-typical-grocer paper bag and it came quite compressed. For 5 dollars I would say that is a steal. The quality of the fresh smelling and green grass was superb; my picky guinea pigs dove right into it. If you own chickens or rodents, you need to stop here for feed. They sell by the pound priced at anywhere between $.60-$1.25. There were also other supplies for dogs and cats, but I didn't get a good chance to look through them. I have been buying dog and bird food here for over 20 years. Recently our favorite dog food has been hard to get. The girls told me that the manufacturer was having problems . They said they could only get limited shipments of the food, and Wednesday was the best day to get some before they sold out. We played this game with them for months. Where has this place been for the last five years or so since I've adopted guinea pigs and bunnies? Such a wide variety of hays for them to eat - much more than what you'd see at pet stores, that's for sure! Normally pet stores only sell Timothy (and maybe alfalfa), but this place has those, plus others such as orchard, which my pets seem to love! I heart the Feed Barn!! This place is great. It's like a country ranch store in the middle of the suburbs -- it doesn't quite belong, but it sure is great. Though they don't have as wide a selection of products as your mega-stores like PetCo do, they do have the basics and at good prices at that. The people who work there are also incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. I haven't look back since my first visit -- this is a really great store. I give it four rather than five stars, because my experiences there have been limited. I'm only shopping for one type of animal, who doesn't require a great deal of stuff, so I'm not sure if every pet-owner will find exactly what s/he needs here. Very obscure place to find, but certainly got a great deal on timothy hay for my bun! They sell a variety of LARGE paper grocery bag hay ranging from orchard to timothy to others! A large bag of timothy was 4.99$..so much cheaper and fresher than store-bought hay! However, the hay is NOT cut at all so they come out in long, tangled strings and get absolutely everywhere..but a small price to pay for fresh, green hay! I will always come back for the hay, but as for the litter...try Petsmart or Petco for a better deal on the 500 cubic feet package. The lady who works here (I'm assuming runs this location) is so laid back and nice. She's so helpful and had always tried to save money with the bulk stuff. Yet she never pressures you to buy more than you need. There's also not a lot of places you can buy good sprig millet in this part of oc. If you need any additional supplies that they don't have on the floor as part of their normal stock, such as specialty poultry supplies, they have a catalog you can order from, though it can get expensive. read more

I called ahead of time and the clerk was kind enough to let me know what they had in stock and their prices. I purchased 4 paper grocery bags full of Timothy hay at $4.99 each as well as a large bag of oxbow Timothy pellets for ~$34. Such a bargain compared to chain stores like Petco or PetSmart. The employees are friendly and knowledgeable. This is one of two places I know where I can buy my Rabbit Pellets. I like it here because I don't have to special order them. My bunnies have always eaten Lab Diet High Fiber Rabbit Pellets. Recently the place where we used to buy our pellets from closed their business. Our bunnies refuse to eat other pellets and will pick out these pellets in the bowl if we mix them with other brands.
