My wife and I are in town for a wedding and house shopping. This was our first visit. We stopped in early afternoon to make reservations for dinner and the hostess was very helpful. Our server was excellent I wish I remembered his name. My family and I split a meat and cheese board which was excellent. I had the Rueben. I am very particular about my Rueben's but I have to say it was one of the best I've ever had. My step son had the fried chicken and my wife had the scallops. A recent roadtrip through the South Carolina midlands found me in Rock Hill with my sister one evening - starving after a day of sight-seeing with no time for lunch. A quick peek at Yelp for the Rock Hill area kept showing The Flipside Restaurant as a top pick for the area so we stopped in on a whim. We arrived at around 8:30 and were promptly seated. Cognizant of the fact that they closed at 9, we made quick work of the menu and were ready to order as soon as our server greeted us. I went with the 24 braised short rib served over a bed of risotto with root vegetables and a delicious crème fraiche to top it off. We only had to wait about 15 minutes before our food came out steamy hot. YALL. It was seriously some of the best short ribs I've ever had in my life. So moist, tender, and flavorful. Every single flavor on the plate worked together exceptionally well to compliment one another. When I tell you I scraped my plate clean (something I have ever rarely done at a restaurant) Im not playing. We were briefly staying overnight in Rock Hill and decided to try Flipside after a long day of sightseeing. We were both pretty hungry since we skipped lunch . The service was super fast and the vibe was laid back and inviting . Our food arrived in good time and we both quickly devoured our entrees . My salmon and Brussel sprouts were delicious . The brussels had a light balsamic glaze and a perfectly crisp texture . My sister's short rib dish was equally delicious. We weren't there to be social , simply there to dine and dash as we had an early morning ahead . We had a rehearsal dinner here for a friends wedding. It was a nice private room with an additional room they used for the kids room. The food was good. However the service could have been a little better. It was interesting how they had the same waiters serving us as the rest of the restaurant. They seemed a little stressed (as to be expected) since there were so many of us. It took 45-1 hour to get each dish out. I think if the bride and groom were asked ahead of time to give the restaurant everyone's choices/orders that will help significantly. Just a thought. read more

Very cool place to dine with generous portions and eclectic, difficult-to-choose-from food selections. I could have eaten anything on their menu! Jenna was able to secure me with a preview of their cold-brew coffee martini, and I warmed up to it over dinner. I selected the pecan-crusted trout on a bed of risotto with asparagus. The trout was light and flaky, though by itself might have been a smidge bland. But pair it with the nutty risotto and the tender asparagus, adding the peach chutney, and what an explosion of beautiful taste! Worst experience ever. As with any restaurant, service is everything. They fill the place to the brim and make waitressses subpar at their job. Walked in and had a reservation for my family which includes a 2 year old and 1 year old. As soon as we got seated I asked for the waitress to see if they could make TJ Childs food right away: she said they should be and then 15 mins later she comes back and asks if we are ready to order. We are like did you put my child's food in? She goes oh I forgot. Unacceptable and she didn't even offer an apology so we walked out. Went with a friend, a local, who grew up in this area. There are two locations of the Flipside, one in Rock Hill and the other in Fort Mill. This review is for the Rock Hill location. Nice and open interior. Booths along one wall and tables filling the center. Not as packed as in Fort Mill. Same menu, and it is worth going to their web site to read it before you come in. A lot of basic plates, all with a twist of some kind. My friend recommended the shrimp and grits: There are people who will only eat shrimp and grits here...'cause they are so good. What else could I do, other than order the shrimp and grits. It was yummy-lishous. Smooth, not clumpy-thick grits. Andouille saugage, grilled shrimp, carmalized onions, small tomatoes, and lightly charred bell peppers. Ever bite was a little different that the ones preceeding it. An excellent meal, all the way through it. If you are new to the southern world of grits, especially shrimp and grits, be mindful that what the restaurant does with the grits makes the meal. So tasty! I've had two different margaritas from here. They were both so good! My husband has had their Old Fashioned drink twice and he said they were very good. We got the pimento cheese app which was served with pretzels. I don't typically like pretzels but this one was delicious with the pimento cheese. I ordered the surf and turf skewers for my entree. They were very good. My husband got the sloppy Joe sandwich and fries which he said was very good. I ordered the chocolate pecan pie which was served with ice cream. I couldn't finish it after the meal but it was also delish. We think this may be our new go to spot downtown! read more

They temperature check after letting you wait at the door for 10 minutes so don't see the point in that. Our waiter had the personality of a funeral director and never smiled once. The atmosphere is okay but the chairs and booth colors don't match the design. Otherwise , cute place. But, the food was a disappointment. The butternut squash soup had sugar and loads of cinnamon, they poured balsamic vinegar and cookies on top. It was so sweet it made a better dessert topping than soup. The shrimp and grits were huge. The grits were tasty but too salty. The shrimp flavor was lost to the loads of Tasso ham and far too many tomatoes which made it watery. All in all, still the best dish. My husband had the Cuban since was a bit bland but toasted well. The tiramisu was not made in house and for some reason covered in Heath pieces. Okay wine list, nothing special. read more

This restaurant is located down a cute little alley downtown Rockhill. The host really had the most with his welcoming greeting and offer of booth or table. The server had a bit of a "spiked" edge It really seemed she was just looking for us to go since we ordered just waters. When we ordered our food she seemed to still have an attitude, we could hear she had issues with something personal she kept (very loudly) talking about...we couldn't even get her attention for the lemons she forgot to bring us for our waters. When she brought the food she was so hyper we couldn't ask for lemons or anything....how ridiculous....after she came back with ketchup I finally gave it one last try and after staring at me in the face and ignoring me she finished her conversation with another server and went to another table who called her after I did twice and then came over and said "what do you want".....needless to say we got our lemons finally. Weird, there was a lady (server) emptying out her bag as we were waiting for our food out in the open on what looked like a tiny bar. Also noticed the host was walking back and forth from the bar eating bites from a plate of food he had "hidden" in plain sight by the bar. They "washed" cups by rinsing them and throwing them in a blue cup bin on the floor under the table....my concern with getting sick eating here grew to be a legit concern. My child and I had a horrible stomach pain midway through eating...we didn't get boxes we just left and my child ended up throwing up. read more

I stopped in for a Thursday lunch and Corey told me a bit about the menu and when he got to 'award winning shrimp & grits' he got my attention. Made with hominy grits, andouille sausage, specially selected fresh shrimp, it's the real deal. It's received the USA Today award for top 10 in that category. I lived in N Orleans for 2 years & traveled all over the south, Charleston, Savannah and other assertional southern cities. I'll put this right in the top 5 I've ever had. Owner/Chef's Amy & Jon stay connected with the kitchen and their other location off route 21 in Fort Mill. This is the reason, I gravitate to independently owned & operated restaurants. This restaurant was highly rated on yelp so I decided to give it a try. My first observation was the menu with small plates on the left building in size with large plates on the right. I've never seen it done this way but it makes sense. Inside seating is comfortable with some interesting artwork. Round tables for large groups are by the windows, booths line the wall and outdoor seating or bar seating is available too. As for the food all that I can say is At The Flipside the Coffee Ground BBQ Baby Back Ribs are so good you're going to want to share it with the family next to you. Don't forget to try the sides too, yes "Kale-slaw", Macaroni and Cheese too. It's a large plate but Soldier through it, waste not, and God bless the cook! read more

Returned to Flipside tonight, and were not approached quickly by the hostess, although we made eye contact with multiple staff members with no acknowledgement. After a few minutes, we were approached by the hostess, who showed a level of disinterest that I've not experienced before here. She quoted a wait of twenty minutes for a table. We were seated within ten minutes, which was appreciated, however, we noticed that the family that arrived right after us was not greeted during the time we were waiting. This was disappointing. When seated, we were approached by our server within a few minutes and we got some sweet tea for each of us and decided on the Brussels sprouts. Classically, this has been one of my favorite appetizers here along with the Pull apart bread. We received our sprouts, presented in a clay pot with no offer for small serving plates. We began to eat these, and found them to be charred beyond recognition, with most of the balsamic glaze at the bottom of the clay pot. This was inedible. 90% burnt and flaking apart. It was at this time that we were deciding on entrees and were waiting for our server to return. We noted at this time that there seemed to be only one server per half of this restaurant, which was not able to meet adequate service levels. Many tables were waiting for support and were growing frustrated. We decided to ask a passing server for our bill and let her know that we would be calling it a night and that unfortunately the sprouts were burnt. Then our original server returns, and I attempt to let him know that we are going to head out as he attempts to bring us appetizer plates. This is after we have moved the sprouts to the far end of the table. I then reiterated that we are going to head out and call it a night and it looked like they needed more support. He then offered to cover the bill for our sprouts and two iced teas. The reason I wrote this review tonight is that we would have stayed through everything that happened tonight if one thing would have happened from the beginning: Clear Communication. If we would have been acknowledged by the staff who saw us when we came in, told, "We will be right with you." this would have resulted in our expectations being reset and allowed us to feel as though we were going to be taken care of even if there was a wait. I have no problem with waiting if acknowledged and communicated with professionally. This expectation was not met tonight by our hostess or server. I understand this climate is rough for staffing, but in order to provide the type of service that makes people want to come back, some more training, or rehiring is needed at this location.
