The hostess at the friendly toast has no concept of table organization and let my elderly mother stand there waiting for 20 minutes to clear off a table for us. They messed up my husband's phone number upon check-in, making our wait even longer. It doesn't look like there is enough wait staff today, as food was piling up and getting cold in the kitchen, likely contributing to our longer wait time. Nothing wrong with the flavor, however, although my very adorable home made corned beef hash was dainty, the potatoes shredded so finely they are like delicate crunchy threads... but it was bland. Found this gem cruising through Yelp looking for a place that was on the way to Salem and this fit the bill. This location is in a mall but has a separate individual entrance, no need to go into mall. Adequate parking available. Unique decor, interesting menu and abundant seating. Our party of 7 was greeted and quickly seated but they will not push tables together and don't have seating for more than 6 so we sat adjacent to one another. Seated within 2 minutes and i had Amanda as a server who was training. Amanda was pleasant and accommodating, she did a good job. The food was pretty good but the breakfast burrito had a few too many bites of just tortilla. My Irish bendict was good but the home fries were kind of burnt yet somehow soggy moreso than fried/crunchy. In the 30 minutes we waited they say several parties of 4 and a party of 5. I questioned why we were still not seated. I young hostess said they only have a couple seated that accompanied a high chair. A both that seated 6 opened up and they were about to seat a large party. I nicely said we will take it. We don't need the high chair. We ate and when the check came I noticed they added a 20% gratuity. That pissed me off. I paid it but will not come back to this location. I went here for brunch with my friend on Sunday. They dont offer reservations but do allow you to put in your name to wait in line on the day of, so you have a general idea of when you and your party can go in. The restaurant itself is very quirky and colorful, which was refreshing. For brunch I ordered the eggs benedict on salmon toast which was pretty good. I also ordered a cocktail flight, which I didn't enjoy very much. I've been wanting to go to the Friendly Toast for quite a while but the lines are always so insane. I can see why this place is so popular. The menu is interesting and creative and the ambience is cool. We sat at the bar and the service was super fast. I had the Lily Bowl, my husband had the waffle special and my daughter had the American burrito. I'll start with my husband's. He loved it very much. There were a lot of things going on... fried chicken, hot honey or maple syrup, bits of bacon in the waffle, pickled onions and possibly more. He said it all worked together and it was all delicious. Next was the uninspired American burrito but it's only uninspired because it's basically scrambled eggs and bacon and cheese in a burrito. I think she would have preferred chorizo rather than bacon but that was on her. The home fries were delicious!! Now for the bowl. Definitely also a lot going on. It had riced cauliflower, turkey sausage, fried eggs, arugula, spicy pecans and cilantro avocado hollandaise sauce. Since I don't like cilantro, I asked that the hollandaise sauce be put on the side. So I was a little disappointed to find that there was definitely a cilantro taste throughout. I'm not sure if it was in the riced cauliflower or what but because I'm a super taster, cilantro taste like soap to me. So, I was not happy that I could not enjoy my breakfast but I added lots of hot sauce and power through. I wish they would have indicated somewhere that there was cilantro in the dish other than the hollandaise sauce. And so, I would come back to Friendly Toast. I just would not order the Lily Bowl. I have to admit I did order the Lily Bowl because that's my name but next time, I'll try something else. I did like the ability to add our name onto our waiting list. Even though we had to wait a little bit when we got there, we were able to be seated right away at the bar. So, no problem there but I do love that feature. I just wish they would make the radius a bit larger. I also liked the ability to pay with the scan code. Very convenient and hands-free. I hope that's the trend for most restaurants. read more

The Huevos rancheros looked appetizing but digging in the dish fell apart. Dry tortillas slathered with avocado on one side, missing beans, barely there salsa all made for a meh dish. Server checked in after the meal was done. Overall average experience. The location in Burlington is adjoining the mall and has outdoor seating as well. So highly rated that I figure I ordered the wrong thing. The coffee was very good and included refills. The service was very good too. I guess it should be 3 1/2 or 4 . Hubs was happy with his build your own omelet. He added spinach and asparagus and mushrooms and cheddar. It came with toast and the home fries, described below. I had the huevos rancheros but I obviously had not read the menu description carefully. I checked a menu on my way out and I had glossed over the word "crispy." I've had huevos rancheros in many different restaurants but never ever was it based on fried tortillas. So I guess it was my mistake, thinking about what I know as that dish rather than paying attention beyond the name and realizing this place does it differently. What it was, was a pile of, I have to admit, their delicious if a little too greasy home fries. They're cubed potatoes well cooked, crunchy outside, soft inside. Atop the fries was 1 fried, crispy, tortilla topped with black beans and some avocado. On top of that, another crispy tortilla, with 1 sunny side up egg and a sprinkle of cotija cheese. The server offered hot sauce and I poured some Cholula, yum, over it. Cut it with fork and knife, it tasted fine, no great shakes, but overall too greasy for my taste. As I mentioned, the coffee was good and so was the service. Restroom was clean. I'd consider this restaurant again for breakfast or lunch, but I'd read carefully and probably stick with an omelet. read more

As far as brunch places go, this one's fine. I say this because while it isn't particularly bad or anything like that, it's not exactly what I'd consider to be this huge spectacle of a restaurant everyone else around here seems to make it. Let's discuss the food, shall we? So, I order the corned beef hash and eggs (formally dubbed "The Classic Breakfast", in which you can choose whatever breakfast meat). No big deal, right? Couple anecdotes to point out. The eggs were fine. Although they DID have that weird thing going on where the edges were so singed, they resembled that of chicken wire. I shouldn't require a knife to cut through over easy eggs. The hash is made in house. I've already pointed out in other reviews that this isn't my preferred form, but it's acceptable. The corned beef was tender as hell and seasoned beautifully. It also looked like they stuck shoestring potatoes in there rather than the classic diced potatoes. Speaking of potatoes, theirs were basically perfect. Blended well with the eggs, minus the singed parts. The toast is where I have a problem. Thicker than normal toast, this bread was as dry as Wheat Thins. I probably should have gotten the English muffins instead. But overall, the classic breakfast gets a 7 out of 10. They have a full bar, which I sat at. Service was decent. Though I suspect this place gets WAY busier on weekends. Oh, and for anyone who was wondering, yes--it's loud as hell in here; both auditorily as well as visually. I mean, this place has more posters and bumper stickers on the walls than the Hard Rock Café! I think this restaurant is overhyped. It's fine, but no where near the greatest restaurant I've been to regarding brunch. Part of my lack of enthusiasm may be due to the fact that this is another indigenous chain. Still a chain though. First impression: this place is LOUD. Not just in terms of volume, but the decor. Lots of vibrant colors and decorations adorning the walls, as if an old school diner went to Woodstock. The chicken was juicy and crispy and the waffle was fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The hot honey and chipotle crema were a nice touch. They have rotating food and drinks specials. For my drink, I got the special Sip Me Baby One More Time cocktail. I normally don't have cocktails at 11:00am, but it was my birthday and I'm a huge Britney Spears fan. The description said it came with rum, blueberry puree, mint, lime, and soda, so it was basically a blueberry mojito. I didn't taste the mint or lime but otherwise I liked it. The main reason I don't give 5 stars is the prices. The chicken and waffles was $17. You don't even get a full waffle, you get 3/4 of a waffle. My dad got the monster breakfast (also $17) which comes with two pancakes or slices of French toast, two eggs, and choice of breakfast meat (bacon, sausage, ham, etc.). Other breakfast joints have more or less the same thing for a fraction of the price and larger portions. Service was good and we got our food pretty quickly despite the business.
