I apologize I forgot his name but he was the host/server at 4pm on Dec3rd! Great service, very attentive. I went for happy hour and it was my first time at the Funky Taco. 3 for $12 street tacos. So flavorful! I also had chips and dip . The dips were soso good, the tortilla chip style here is very crunchy/hard; i am more of a light fluffy tortilla chip gal, but they were still eaten. Overall, very impressed and I will albsolutelty be back!

The Funky Taco is an okay Mexican fusion restaurant. I came here with a party of 4 for lunch and we were seated right away. The service was attentive, quick, and friendly. I ordered the Prawnto Tacos, which are two medium-sized shrimp tacos. As you can see from my picture, the tortillas were extra toasted which I usually don't mind but they were cold. Cold, extra toasty tortillas are no bueno. While the plating was pretty, the majority of the serrano crema was on the plate instead of in my tacos... All in all, I wasn't a fan of my visit and think that they have room for improvement.

This is where we decided to eat for Mother's Day and it did not disappoint. If you are like me and queso is one reason you go to Mexican food- then order the chips & dip. The chips are homemade 1/2 of a corn tortilla fried to perfection. The beer cheese (they don't actually call it queso) was perfect consistency and flavor. The best, freshest tasting guacamole and the salsa was very flavorful but not overly spicy. My husband and I ordered the same thing (we never do that) but we had a surf & turf taco and the classic chicken taco. How do I describe them? Do not order them thinking you are getting an average Mexican food taco- these things are very "funky" packed with flavor but do not resemble a traditional taco at all. The servers were all sweet. I will be back especially for the chips and dip.

Where do I even begin? As a vegan I'm always looking for unique options when I visit a new city, and WOW did The Funky Taco deliver! I ate here 3 times while I was in Boise for a few days because I just HAD to try every vegan option on the menu. First thing I tried was the vegan nachos. I was not ready for how delicious these were going to be. They use halved tortillas and fry them for chips, which is amazing for scooping up all the nacho toppings. The beans and creamed corn were so flavorful, the marinated shiitake mushrooms were perfectly prepared and so savory, and all of the slaw, shredded carrots and radish brought so much freshness to the appetizer that turned into my meal. A MUST if you come here. I also had the berries and cream for dessert (the only vegan option) which was simple but delicious if you're looking for something light. Next visit I had the vegan verde enchiladas. Also a stunner! It definitely reads more like a burrito, but I've never had soyriso and potatoes prepared so perfectly, I almost questioned if there was meat in the dish because of how much flavor and texture was in them! The salsa verde was plentiful and there were also lots of greens inside that made it feel like despite the size of the dish. For my last visit I tried the funky fried rice nuggets and the flower power tacos. The rice nuggets are a OUT OF THIS WORLD. They are seasoned with five spice and then served with chili crisp, vegan kewpie mayo, pickled cucumbers and a fennel slaw that is to die for. This appetizer couldn't be more perfect! The flower power tacos were also a great balance between fried and battered cauliflower, beautifully dressed slaw, and fresh sprouts and radishes to top them off. On top of the food, every person we interacted with was so nice and made sure we had plenty of their house made hot sauces and sauces to enjoy with our meal. This place will be a MUST every time I'm in town!

We are from Santa Cruz, California. It's been hard to find decent comparable food out here. But this place has the best breakfast burritos around. We drive from Meridian a few times a week for it. Highly recommend. If you appreciate quality, and good taste. Highly recommend.

This place was really good pre covid but I'd have to say my last few experiences were subpar. Cut back on the salt chefs! My entire table had four different meals and we all shared it so it wasn't just one pallet or another experiencing it. The Macho brisket taco was like licking a salt brick...if you know, you know. The prawnto shrimp taco needs much more crema. The amount of cilantro on every taco was rediculous. It overpowered. My nachos were great. The homemade chips, pickled jalapenos, chicken and beer cheese on point as usual. The chicken burrito was so salty my wife took out the chicken. Everybody loved the papas and sauce appetizer. Service here is always excellent and ambience as well as location to downtown activites are great. But beware of the salty taco. ;)

Order vegan tacos with the cream sauce - its fabulous

This "funky" restaurant is amazing. I've bee there several times i this year and enjoyed their tacos. Then a few of us decided to try the vegan Nachos, and wow! A real hit with mushrooms, chips made on site, shredded veges such as carrots and other root veges, and a delicious cream sauce. They are now open Sundays (May 2024), and so far not slammed, so its a good time to wander in and try a taco or nacho.

It's a fanatically gorgeous day here in Boise this late afternoon. We are seated by the Bob Dylan rendering. Landon is waiting on us. Started off with the special nacho with chicken, since the Korean nachos already set with the pork and ham topping on it. The macho is the beef brisket. $17.75. HH discount is $1 off of your bill. Doing a progressive meal in Boise tonight. Lots of places to at and too few days to hit them all. Salas are verde, mango habanero and a spicy peach. The special nachos was much taller than I was expecting. A lot of different sauces going on and it's all so good. The nachos are fried corn tortillas. The chicken are cubed and sizable chunks. The only thing missing was having enough chicken chunks for all of the big tortilla chips. It's a lot going on, but tasty. The mango habanero is slightly sweet and has decent heat to it. The peach has a Smokey flavor to the salsa, both of the hot salsas are good. Service was good as well.

We came in a reasonable time and food came to our table fast! Their chips are interesting, it was a tortilla cut in half and deep fried but it was tolerable. Their nachos are alright, kind of annoying to eat them due to the large size of chips and an unnecessary large amount of carrot garnish on them, but if you're patient, get them. Their macho tacos are really good, but they were crazy salty today. I don't agree with the price of the Simple Tacos they have, it was $16 for two tacos that had very little meat in it. read more

Food was great. Overall not what we expected but a pleasant experience. For some reason they do not serve regular cocktails. All cocktails are sake or wine variants. Wait staff seemed rushed and annoyed, but the place was nearly empty. Would go back for sure! read more

Holy chicken tacos! The chicken was charbroiled and tender with just the right seasoning. I cannot remember the last time I had a taco that was this freaking good! My friend had the chicken quesadilla and she was just as happy as I was. This is my first time and will definitely not be my last. We sat at the bar and Ty was our server. Genuinely kind and made us feel right at home. Greeted with a smile that never left his face. That's the stuff! We were happy to find an open seat here as most locations were booked for 30-45 min. The host was very kind and considerate, I think he was the owner. He was great, but waitresses were less than attentive. Tacos were average and not filling. I had the TNT which was tasty and flavorful, but only two bits of ahi. My son loved the extra super cheesy quesadilla. The three table sauces barely came out of the bottle, tiny drips that took far too much effort to get. I think it could be a great spot with only a couple improvements. The ambience is comfortable and not as pretentious as most in the area. read more

What a fun vibe! I really liked the Chicken Roja tacos. They were deliciously spicy, but not painful. I was also a Doubting Thomas and wondered if 2 tacos with no side or chips and salsa would be enough for lunch, but Funky Taco proved me wrong. As the hostess who greeted us at the door and took our order said, "These aren't regular street tacos." There was plenty of meat and fillings and the house made tortillas are da bomb. One thing that hit a home run with me was the friendly, attentive service. At the open water station they had large glasses for water, and all during lunch, our fantastically friendly servers came by to check on our table, refill my water glass a few times, and clear our empty dishes when appropriate. So even though you order and pay when you come in the front door, the rest of the meal was full service in my opinion. I wish I had tipped more. Great location at 8th and Bannock. Perfect for people watching and actually pretty convenient to get to. I met a friend for lunch so I have no comment on the evening music-noise issue some others have mentioned. I'm already planning on returning with more friends for lunch. So why the 4 stars? I think the prices are a little high, but they aren't totally outrageous (I've paid more for less at a few other places in town). And they don't serve everything on the fabulously inventive menu all the time so if you have your heart set on one dish, it may not be available on the day you visit. I wish they had been serving the Korean Pastor tacos on the day I was there. read more

The Funky Taco is interesting because the flavor is great, but I did not have a great experience there. I got chips and salsa which was 7ish dollars and received 15 chips. The bartender had nobody else at the bar but still rushed to take my order. The food I had was good, but two tacos for 20+$ is crazy. If you want Mexican look elsewhere, but if you want a good experience, also look elsewhere. read more

I finally got to try this place out. I really like how you order at the counter , as you come in. I didn't like that the menu ,didn't Have any descriptions of what was in the tacos. My girlfriend and I had the briscuit tacos, very good. The briscuit had a good flavor, and had a fresh style. We also had the chips , and salsa very good. Also the chips were made with flour, and they were nice and crunchy. Just a few things 1. Get a new board , that describes more in detail , what's in the food. This will speed up the ordering process. 2. Even though the tacos were substantial. I kinda feel that they should of came with a small side. Like a small little salad, or beans, fresh cut salsa, something. 3. How about a little more choices for the non alcoholic drinks. I liked the place they did a good job with the remodel. Excellent!!! Reading the menu, I thought it was just another overpriced fancy Mexican adaptation similar to Tacolicious in San Francisco: a good, but horrendously overpriced spot. We followed the locals advice and tried it out. Funky taco was nothing like the trendy overpriced spot in SF. Tacos here were super delish... generous portions, and simply to die for. Holy moly these were some tasty tacos! It took our party a while to order because we were having a hard time deciding what to get! Everything sounded so amazing! A customer behind us assured us we couldn't go wrong with anything on the menu. I got the Piggy Stardust, hubby had the Macho, and MIL had the chicken roja. All were excellent and served on homemade flour tortillas. They do offer corn tortillas if you want a gluten free option, but these are not homemade. (Sad face) Each order was 2 tacos, and they were generous portions! None of us went away hungry. The only small quibble I had was their online menu is slightly different than what was offered (no bulgogi cheese steak) but after tasting what I ordered it no longer mattered. Funky? Definitely. We just ate at Funky Taco for lunch! We have always ordered the vegan nachos so tasty. Last time we were here we ordered those and the shiitake Biiria tacos. They were great last time had good amount of mushrooms. This time we ordered and the tacos had like 4-5 small slices of mushrooms. So basically we paid 16.75 for three corn tortillas, cheese and shredded cabbage. What a ripoff!! For that price I wanna see my tacos loaded with shrooms. read more

Taco restaurant located right in DT Boise. The food: Great food. We had the chips and salsa and their version of queso dip, both were really good. The tacos were bigger than I anticipated definitely should have only ordered two instead of four. Everything thing we had was packed with flavor. The service: We had a great server checked in us often but not too often. Very friendly. The decor: Very open and clean spot, they also have different music playing on different nights. Overall: this place gives of a very friendly vibe we had good conversation with the couple next to us, not all places give off such a vibe that people feel comfortable enough to chat with neighbors. read more

The food and drinks were great! The service was some of the worst we have received. Our server seemed to be ignoring us whenever she walked past. We ordered nachos and told her we will be ordering other meals. She never came back to take our order. When we stopped her to tell her we needed to order more, I think she must have forgotten to fire our ticket. In total we spent an hour after we had our nacho appetizer to receive our meals. I had to fill up our water from a giant jug, we were sitting upstairs. Food was really good but not sure I want to go back because the server really makes or breaks an experience. read more

It's nuts to go for the full five stars for me, but the combo of friendly waiter, excellent drinks and quality ingredients was too good to give a four. The pork taco - beyond tasty!! Mango prepped with love! The grilled cheese and even all the sauces were top notch. I wish I could Wizard of Oz tornado this place to my home neighborhood and eat here everyday. A real Boise highlight. read more

I always appreciate restaurants that offer a good assortment of vegan options as part of their regular menus. The Flower Power Tacos were legitimately bomb, probably in large part due to the bomb sauce. I wish I could have bought a bottle of it! The cauliflower was cooked great, and I appreciated the thoughtful addition of other ingredients. The Chorizo con Papas Burrito was not at all what I expected. It seemed more like potatoes and mole, which might suit some people's fancy, but not the chorizo experience I was hoping for. Not bad per se, but I wouldn't order it again. read more

So freaking good! You have to try the special nachos!! And the elotes corn. Can't wait to come back. Devoured it before I could get a photo. Sat at the bar, I'll probably do that from now on. Really good tasting tacos, and the service was fine. We all just wondered why they stuffed everything into two tacos (overflowing and falling apart while you eat them) instead of adding one more tortilla and spreading it out into 3 tacos? I would have bought a side tortilla if it was offered. I ended up with a bunch of taco filling on my plate , and no tortilla. read more

This place ended up being a happy surprise! We were running around putting our name in at multiple restaurants and Funky Taco had the shortest wait time, so we went. We didn't know what to expect. It's small inside but nice, we sat next to the bar which was sort of a bummer because everyone and their mom is walking back and forth the entire time. Other than that, everything else was great! Our server was super sweet and made some recommendations. The Thaico was by far my fave taco we tried. The flavor just kept flowing with every chew! It's insane, if you love Thai flavors, you will not regret this taco. The Macho taco was the second fave (hubby's first), also very fresh and flavorful, you can't go wrong with brisket! The TNT was mediocre. I looove sashimi so I was excited to try this, but it just wasn't nearly as flavorful as the others. The smoked pineapple was a great touch, but I feel it needed a sauce with it, maybe a wasabi mayo! We will def go back for that Thaico! read more

This place won me over before I even walked in. I was walking around, trying to figure out where I was going to eat, and heard Eric B and Rakim blasting. I don't usually care about what music is being played in a restaurant, but the whole time I was there, the tunes were jammin! Ordered the Thaicos, chips and salsa, and pinto beans. The salsa was great. I feel like they really roast the crap out of the tomato, which is the way to go. It's also more or less pureed, so I wasn't having to scoop chunks out with the chips. They should bottle and sell the salsa. The Thaicos... have a rare distinction of being better than tacos I make at home. No really, I'm paying for variety and convenience when I order tacos, but usually in my head I'm like "I've done better." These might have been the best tacos I've had in my life. Curried chicken, slaw, fresh basil... every bite was freaking awesome! Bold flavors! The... pinto beans? Yes, the freaking pinto beans. Beans with tacos have a purpose for me. After I'm done demolishing the tacos, I'll take all the stuff that fell out, mix it in the beans, dump my remaining salsa on it, and eat it with chips... people call it weird, I call it Beany Goo. I've never had pinto beans that I just straight up ate by themselves. I don't know what they cook their beans in, but the PINTO BEANS were remarkable... hence my remarks. Bold flavoring in the pinto beans... nice! So yeah, I'll be back, and I'll have to work my way through the menu. Any friends in town are going to be taken here. Anybody with ears will be annoyed by me for the next week or so, because this is all they're going to hear about. Between the good food, friendly service, and jammin tunes, this place really brightened my day! read more

Nachos are sweet, chicken on them cooked in canned sauce (or just very gross sauce), waitress ignored me and the drinks were terrible, VERY over priced, the place would make a nice coffee shop though, it's a nice space. read more

We came here for an impromptu date night. The service was impeccable. The Power Salad was bar none the best salad I have had IN MY LIFE (and that's saying a lot). The only way they could make that better is maybe replace the grapes with some pitted Greek olives? We also love the ambiance. Well done, Funky Taco. read more

It's a popular place in downtown Boise. The servers are wonderful. But the food is in need of a serious revamp. Had the veg enchiladas and the so called corn sauce had almost no taste and unfortunately covered the entirety of what was underneath. Others in our party of 7 were equally disappointed. The prices are high for tacos. read more

We went last night for the first time and won't be back. Overpriced, underwhelming taco dishes. My macho tacos came with bunches of cilantro trees in them - yes, trees. I don't care if "funky" is part of the restaurant name, this was just a gross additive. I spent half our anniversary dinner sitting at the table picking the stems and trees out of my tacos. We'll be sticking with the Matador next door for half the price, or Tin Roof Tacos down the street. With some many other great options, skip the Funky Taco. read more

We have been going here regularly over 4th of July weekend for 3 years. Went in tonight had a group of 15 were refused to be seated even if our group would split it. What a joke, this is our favorite place when we come to Boise. Weill never come back here again! What a joke! read more

Came back to visit and was looking for something new to try. I absolutely loved the Funky Taco. I got the bahn mi mi tacos and they were incredible. The creamed corn was addicting and the white sangria was so refreshing and delicious. Our server was super nice and quick. If I lived here I'd be ordering take out weekly, it's that good! read more

Tacos are $2.50 I don't understand why chips are $5 and they aren't even like your traditional Mexican chips or something along those lines. The person attending the counter seemed to have an attitude and didn't feel like he wanted to be there. Never saw any of the tables wiped off in my 45 minutes there for lunch. This place is amazing. Everything is good. I went for the first time since shelter in place for pick up and they have a window on bannock where you can order or pick up your online order. Everyone looked like they were following a great protocol and the service was pretty speedy as well. read more

This spot is absolute ! The Thaico taco is to die for. Everything here is incredible, and they have tons of vegan and gluten free options. A must visit while in Boise! Our waitress Jerica was super friendly and kindhearted. She made the whole experience an elevated one. read more

Original flavor combos and always changing up their menu to keep it fresh. (But please never get rid of the huevos rancheros!) Large portions for a very affordable price, especially considering the use of so many local ingredients! read more
