Was looking for a fun place to reconnect with friends and "discovered" Golden Retriever on Yelp. It was absolutely brilliant. You step inside and transition from strip mall to an authentic British pub! Lots of great local and British beers. The menu is limited, but well prepared pub food. The only thing missing is a proper fish and chips. Service was very helpful and attentive without being annoying. We immediately felt at home. There are dart boards and pool tables and great little seating alcoves to hang out. One note, Golden Retriever does allow smoking. It didn't bother us as we sat in a different part of the pub. read more

After leaving the bright sunny Texas skies and plunging into darkness upon entering this dark wooded British style pub, I wasn't sure on how inviting that it might be for me. But when I bellied up to the bar, the bartenders made me feel like I was Norm or Cliff from "Cheers". It felt like I had always belonged in this establishment. Crazy, huh? It just proves how out-going & friendly the bartenders are. Besides friendly bartenders & good liquor, what really surprised me was the food. They actually have REAL London bitter, (in cans, we couldn't find it on tap anywhere in theHouston area) though it was served chilled rather than room temperature. We gave the bar tender a good natured hard time and he humored us as a good bartender should. I get why some say it is a mini Bakers Street. It is dark wood throughout, a couple of dart boards with their own little niche, nice bar etc., but I kinda hope the mall crowd never finds this place. I like that it's tucked away and as of now has a bit of an older crowd. We will see if that holds true during college X-Mas break. The menu is limited because they can't or don't want to use a fryer. So it's sandwiches, meat and cheese plates, and salads. I think the sister bar down 1488 is more of a burger, fries and beer joint. This location has a decent selection of beer on tap and an even better selection by the bottle. And they do have Rumplemintz. We have tried the Reuben (marble Rye), French Dip (Baguette), and the Caprese sandwich (Ciabatta). All were very good. Like talk with your mouth full good. hmly sht vis ndwch is rery fmkn gd. They come with chips and a pickle spear. The pickle spear even though it is probably out of a giant plastic tub, tastes like an old school pickle. If you're in the area, this pub is a must go. The Golden Retriever is seriously great; smoke friendly and has an incredible variety of beer. A lot of local brews too which I love! The staff is also very helpful and friendly! The pub itself is very nice. Surprisingly spacious with TV's, pool tables, and dart boards. They also have small, secluded tables, great for date nights! Not to mention their food is fantastic! In addition they have nights for live music, DJs, karaoke, and even a steak night! If you like Baker St minus the crowds and wait time, this place is perfect! I recently moved to the area and stopped in there 3 separate times over the last 6 months. Each time, the bartender(s) completely ignored me. I basically had to jump in front of them and waive my arms to get served because they continually ignored me while they served others that seemed to be regulars. There seems to be lots of regulars (all long bearded men for some reason... must be a club) and they are not at all friendly. This is one of the most unwelcoming bars in Houston/ magnolia. This is a nice hole in the wall that right a 2 minute walk from our hotel. The service was ok, the food was so-so, expect sandwiches only. They do have darts and pool tables and if you are looking for someone "local", this would be it. I would go again to meet up with people when i dont want to stray far from my hotel. read more

This is a great bar in the newer section of magnolia. The atmosphere is good, they have live music on occasional week end nights, and the staff is friendly and easy going. The menu is simple bar food, we had hummus and potato skins. The beer selection is good (they have hoegaarden, which I love) and the only reason I gave this place 4 stars is because it allows smoking inside. The best bar in town. It's nice, clean, SMOKE FRIENDLY, has a WIDE variety of brews on tap as well as in bottles. The look and feel of this place is comfortable. Dark, very dark... It could be a bit brighter but it's fine the way it is. The bar is a dark wood, which I find to be very cool. The staff is super nice and on top, for sure. This place ebbs and flows like most places. Sometimes the crowd is great, sometimes not so much. Two pool tables, two cork dartboards. Full bar. Thursday is local brew night. Service can be a little crazy. Sometimes they only have one server for the whole place so usually I get my drinks at the bar. Food is hit or miss, the sandwiches are great! I also play pool and darts and smoke cigars and watch TV. Maybe I'll move into this place! I hope that the camouflage of the surrounding strip center will keep the undesirables away, but the hip-hop-rap blather choices being made on the juke box suggest that I might have a battle on my hands. Decent place for drinks if you don't want to deal with your standard overpriced and uptight Woodlands bars. Food is ok, pretty basic sandwich and chips. Smoking is allowed as well, however it is not overwhelming. If they had better food, this would be a four star. read more

I was looking for a nice, intimate Irish type pub, and this fit the bill very well. Drinks were good, service was good, and it wasn't overly loud with a small band playing. It's a small place but didn't get very crowded. Pool and darts are available as well if you need something to do. Watched the football games on opening day recently. Nice bar, nice atmosphere, plenty of tvs with a variety of games on. It is a smoking establishment, but with all the fans and smoke eaters, you really don't notice it. For the 2 1/2 hours I was there I did not notice anyone eating anything. This place is extremely disrespectful. I came here with a group of friends to celebrate a friend's 21st birthday. Apparently you have to be 40 years old to come here because we got asked several times from random customers if we were old enough to be here. We were sitting at our table, minding our own business the entire time. The birthday girl was having fun but still sitting at the table, not disturbing other customers or even leaving the table. She then went to the bar to get water and bread because our server (girl with dark brown hair and glasses) was taking her time to get back to us. The bartender was being very rude and disrespectful to her as well. The server then told me that it is not okay for her to be this drunk at the bar (after she had served her all those drinks) even though she was being responsible enough to sober up and again, not disturbing anyone around her. We loved the environment and wanted to become regulars but after this experience, we will never set foot in here again and make sure other friends to do the same. read more
