Great little spot! Dimly lit and intimate vibe. Artichoke and lentil dish was 10/10 good, I wanted to lick the plate. Their simple salad was oddly delicious, perfectly dressed. The cheeseboard was decent, despite the fact that I don't love blue cheese. The steak frites were tasty- slightly overcooked but the flavor was on point. I expected the wine list by the glass to be a little bit better, but I ended up being underwhelmed and unimpressed by of the couple of the glasses that I had. Love this French restaurant I went to last week and already want to go back. I had the escargot which were a little lemony but delicious and hard to find at most restaurants. We tried the Leeks all dolled up, the vegetable was healthy and very tasty. I had myself a fortified wine for the first time! This is really the reason I tried this place, as I have never had fortified wine before. What is it you ask? Basically, wine with brandy in it making the cocktail come in at approx 15-20% bac. Fortified wine is poured in much smaller glasses than a normal wine pour, but I am thankful I got to try it. I got the duck of the day, which was duck confit, and it was amazing. My friend got the steak frites and I was very impressed with the quality steak, was ordered medium but came out beautifully medium rare which my friend was happy about as he immediately regretted telling the server he wanted it medium. Wanted to stop in here for a while and finally made it. Cozy booths and a bar downstairs, and there is a separate wine bar upstairs. Somewhat of a small space so reservations may be necessary. There is a changing special / additions menu so watch it if you're looking for some specific French dishes. Tried the croquettes and they were small and tasty bites. The creamy aioli was so thick, almost like a cheese sauce. The tavern burger was nicely cooked and meaty. There is raclette cheese melted on but the taste was subtle. I'm a massive Superfolie fan and have been meaning to try Good King Tavern for so long! We finally made the trip and it was the perfect cozy Sunday dinner. We made a resy but probably didn't need to, there were plenty of seats at 5pm. We started with the fried chèvre salad with fresh heirloom tomatoes and gem lettuce. We loved how flavorful the tomatoes were and the cheese balls melt in your mouth. Next we had the escargots which enjoyed but was slightly too lemony for us. The duck of the day was duck confit with shaved fennel and apple slices. I can't resist duck confit and this one was so delicious!! The shaved fennel with apple was the perfect side salad. Very fresh and light and the duck was so crispy. I would easily order it again and again. It was the perfect amount of food for two people. Stopped in on a late Thursday evening and was able to grab a booth. We kept it simple, some red wine, the pole beans special, duck confit and steak frites. The pole beans were the best dish of the night. The blend of the hazelnut with the lemon citrus and crunch from the beans, really quite tasteful and artistry. The duck confit was good, great side of the cabbage and apple slaw which helped cut down on the saltiness of the duck. The steak frites was the most disappointing I have to say. While it was cooked perfect medium rare, the portion of steak was so small and the fries (which were huge) were unsalted. I think the service was great, attentive and not overbearing. Perhaps the WORST restaurant experience I've had in several years. 1.)Eric , the host at check in , did not even know that Tuesday nights were "corkage free" as per their own website. 2.) Was "unable to explain " the restaurant's "happy hour" policy. 3.) While two tables adjoining ours, were served dessert, we were unable to locate our server to begin a simple order of mussels and steak frites. (70) minutes later finally addressed. Strongly suggest that owners & management review the competency of their organization. Strong neighborhood following, but suggest many other local places that are WAY better and competent. Both dishes we initially ordered were substandard. The socca , traditionally slightly charred, was in fact completely burnt on the entire bottom and 1/2 of the top including the crust. We were advised that that was the way it should be served but we found it inedible as the strong burnt smell was overwhelming. We ordered asparagus in its place and they were delicious. However the gnocchi with spring peas was disappointing. the peas were downright cold and the gnocchi weren't even warm. When the server asked if everything was alright we told her our issue with the dish and she said I'll tell the chef. There was no follow up, no asking if we wanted the dish to be remade and hot or a substitute. Then the check came with no discount for the dish, nor any mention of her conversation with the chef. We paid the bill but were bothered by the lack of meaningful customer service. But since we have always had a special feeling about the restaurant, we did not want to leave feeling like we didn't want to return so we asked to speak to the manager who seemed disinterested and business like. Unfortunately now we will most likely crosss the restaurant off our list in favor of a more hospitable environment. read more

While floating on this Pale Blue Dot in the middle of an ever expanding universe just trying to figure out where my happiness and purpose lies, I have begun a side quest to find the best Steak Frites. It would be my death row meal. I love steak, and I love fries. So why not? We walked into JUMPIN' Good King Tavern on a Saturday night in the dead heat of dry January... but honestly it hadn't been too bad, no real tests from God yet. We were seated in the dimly lit interior, and I LOVED how small their menu was. Simple and to the point, no fluff. When a menu is too big like DAMN you're just doin too much. We went with Escargots ($12), Mussels ($21), Radish special from the handwritten chalkboard ($I forget), Tavern Burger ($19), and the Steak Frites ($28). I popped both my Escargots and pot style Mussels cherries, and both were great choices. I love trying new things. I'll try anything once, hehe :) When the Steak arrived, I had my first real test from the dry January gods. I wanted a glass of red wine SO bad, let me tell ya. It was the perfect storm to fail dry January: Nothing in that moment could have paired with a steak better than a glass of red, and it was my birthday dinner with my girlfriend, I really don't even drink that much I'm just tryna look rockstar skinny for my upcoming Mexico trip, and.... and then that Kobe Bryant Quote popped in my head. "I'm not negotiating with myself. I signed that contract with myself, I'm doing it." Thanks Kobe. Even from the grave holding me accountable. The Steak Frites was doused in sauce au poivre and I'm normally not the biggest sauce guy with my steak, but this complemented well. Duck Pate, Steak Tartare, Duck Confit, Scallops Omg this place was so good. Super cute date night vibes interior. Friendly servers. Forgot what drink we got, but it was delicious and I am obsessed with the foam on top! The pate and steak tartare were amazingly good. Duck confit was yummy. Stopped by early on a Saturday evening without a reservation and was luckily able to get a table for 2. Service was super friendly, casual and informative. The food was underwhelming, though. The cheese board's cheeses were served cold (brie normally served at room temp) and weren't anything special. The apple jam served with them was great, though. We've always heard good things about the Good King Tavern, but never thought to come by. I'm really glad we finally checked it out last month because all the good things we heard are true. I have to admit what really brought us here was the fact that they're DOG FRIENDLY! Since we came with our dog, we had to sit outside, but there are plenty of tables inside for indoor dining as well. Even though the outdoor seating area is on the sidewalk, this street is pretty quiet with not a lot of foot or car traffic, which makes this set up so ideal. There is also an awning attached to the restaurant, keeping guests protected from the sun or light rain. As for the food, everything we had from the beginning to end was delicious and on point. During dinner, my husband knocked over his glass of wine. Even though this was completely his fault, our server felt bad and comped our dessert, which was incredibly nice of her. Overall, we all had a great time. Service was great, and the food was very delicious. A lot of times, when we bring our dog out to eat with us, we have to sacrifice eating well. After a magnificent dinner at The Saloon, we (us four) were not ready to go home and watch TV. So, we walked over to The Good King Tavern for some libations and conversation. This very hip Bar / Tavern was packed this night at 10:30. The buzz going on here was substantial and we went with this strong vibe. The owner called me after reading my review and explained that there was some new staff that weren't fully up to speed on the rules and apologized for the experience. She also mentioned that wine preferences for everyone are different and if I wasn't happy with the wine, I should have mentioned it to the waiter, which is a fair point. I still am not sure what the rules are for bringing wine between establishments, but that probably won't be an issue for most patrons. Anyway, I may have been overly critical - we didn't have a good experience, but 2 stars is too low, so updating to 3 stars (if i could give 3.5, i would). I really wanted to knock the stars down for the water but after heavy thought I decided to award my coveted 5 rating. The water comes without ice, which is fine when it's 15° outside, but in the summer I hope they splurge for ice. The water itself is silky smooth with a slight hint of extra hydrogen. Very drinkable! The food....amazing. Nothing needs to be added here but I will add anyway. The oysters on the half shell were fresh and the hot sauce (not so hot but perfectly seasoned) made for an excellent starter. Between the three of us we covered air, land, and sea. The burger was tasty (didn't come with a tomato which was only downside) and the fries were delicious. The duck was tender and well worth it. The fish didn't have malt vinegar (something they should stock for the future) but was tasty nevertheless. The cocktails were a hit. Don't think you can go wrong with any of them. The place is small (perfect) and reservations are highly recommended. I finally reviewed Good King after many visits - mostly for the beer and burgers; both of which are very good. However, this visit we decided to stray and try some new items - including some of the daily specials. The first dish was compliments from the chef - delicious fried goat cheese balls; crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside - served with tomatoes and greens. We were getting Skate for the main course, but when I saw fried Skate (fingers) as appetizers, I ordered them! They met my expectations with a delicious gribiche sauce that I dipped the fish into before every bite. The main dish was a beautiful display of Skatewing Amandine with garbanzo beans, almonds and capers - it was exquisite! Oh, I so loved this restaurant pre-Covid! Service was weird, sauce on the 15.00 (3 small) fried oysters was cold, and the escargots dish has strayed from the classic presentation. We arrived prior to 5 pm and were coldly told "you will be seated at 5." We had not requested to be seated earlier, nor even entered the restaurant itself! Unfortunately, we ended up with this individual as our server. She did not offer the Happy Hour menu to us, even though we arrived in time for HH, nor did she advise us that the special menu for last night (Tiki night) was not yet ready. I had to request both. Such a great neighborhood restaurant. Stopped in here on a whim last night with a group of 6 and was seated pretty quickly. Since we were a big group, we had to sit outside but the heaters were effective and kept us nice and toasty. We ordered a little bit of everything and loved it all. Started with the cheese board and brussel sprouts salad- the salad was seriously one of the stars of the meal. They also had a fried oyster special with a nice aioli that we enjoyed. A few people ordered the gnocchi entree which was also good and it was a decent portion, too. The dessert was fantastic- particularly the creme brulee. I'll be dreaming about that for a while. They have a solid wine selection and the waiter was really helpful with his recommendations. My only small qualm is that I felt the menu was limited- what they offer is 10/10 but there weren't many vegetarian entree options. First time trying French Cuisine, and I was absolutely blown away. It's deceiving, and appears as just your average neighborhood rowhome dimly lit tavern, but the food was high-quality and damn tasty. You'd think you were at a full blown Michelin star restaurant with the options, presentation, and flavor! I'd recommend the escargots for an appetizer (my partner who's been to France said it tasted just like the ones he got there) and the mussels were MORE than enough filling for a main course. As for mixed drinks, we tried two each, and the best was a gin conCOCKtion. It was creative and not too sweet, and makes ya go "mmm... OH!" Will DEFINITELY return. The Good King Tavern is home to some delicious and affordable French food! My friend and I came here on a weekday for dinner and had a yummy meal. To drink, I got a happy hour deal - sparkling wine. The glass was pretty small, but the sparkling wine was tasty. My friend got a cocktail that sounded good but was...less than great. I was glad I stuck with wine! To eat, I got the Sweet Potato Gratin (with bechamel and breadcrumbs) and Brussels Sprouts (with harissa chevre). I wasn't sure what the portion size was going to be, but it ended up being super generous! The brussels sprouts were crazy good - tender on the inside, crispy on the outside, and deliciously flavored from the chevre and harissa. The sweet potato gratin was also pretty good, but a little bland. There was a good taste of rosemary, but it was definitely under-salted. I wish I could give 3 and half stars because the food was really good it just wasn't a place where I would run back to my friends and say you have to try this restaurant. I got the steak frites which was good and a decent size but the sauce on it wasn't my favorite. I think $25 is a little much for a dish like that. Good King Tavern might just be my favorite under the radar spot in Philadelphia. The DRINKS. I've never had a cocktail here that wasn't delicious. My favorite is the Penicillin - if you're a ginger lover this is for you. The Apollo and Sazerac are also great choice, the Apollo being refreshing and the Sazerac on the stronger side. They also have a great wine selection both at Good King, and at the Le Caveau, the natural wine bar upstairs. The last time I came here we got the duck wings which were OUT OF THIS WORLD. The sauce was amazing and not too spicy. The steak tartare, escargots, and anything that comes with the french fries are also amazing. This place was a pleasant surprise to us! French cuisine isn't typically the norm, but their menu has some interesting items, and they know how to execute. We saw a lot of mentions of their "socca" dish for an appetizer. This was relatively underwhelming, but we also tried their escargot which was a total standout. For it being a first time try, we didn't go into it with any expectations, but it was cooked in a delicious garlic & herb butter sauce. It also came with toasted bread, which was perfect for dipping. Would highly recommend for anyone who might be hesitant to try to the dish - it was amazing. Our other appetizer was a pea & mint tartine - this was stellar. Really interesting combo, super refreshing dish. For dinner, we had the wild mushroom truffade. This came out in a piping hot cast iron dish which kept it at a perfect temperature from start to finish. It was such a great mix of flavors and very filling with the potatoes & cheese (we loved this for next day leftovers.) We also had the steak frites, which was a solid dish all around. The fries were like an upscale McDonald's fry, and they soaked up the bordelaise sauce. While the steak was cooked well at medium-rare, the only downfall was that it came out at just a warm temperature. We improvised and actually warmed up the steak in the truffade dish, and it really brought to light how tasty the steak was. Beyond the food, we were really pleased the service. The outside seating was cozy, but we took a glimpse inside the restaurant and it looked so cool! It has a traditional homey/corner bar feel, with wood booths and dark color template, but also had some fancier touches like their tin-tiled ceiling. Whether you are looking for a standard well-cooked meal, or have a hankering to try something outside of the box, this is a great spot to consider. Turns out, if you want Philly to yourself, you eat at all the best places when the good Catholics are home eating Easter dinner. Such was the case for us! And at the good king, we were treated as the name suggests--but I doubt our fabulous dinner and service were just a side effect of the Easter emptiness--these folks know what they are doing in all respects. Going forward, this review will be critical not because it was bad but because it was great--because this is the kind of place that fine tunes! To start, we had the tomato butter toast. Holy Toledo, I almost order a second one. We loved it--just spicy, butter in every nook and cranny of bread, cheese on top of cheese, herby, just perfect. We took it down alongside a sazerac that was almost as good as the original at Antoine's. We're picky, but this drink took us right to New Orleans. Then we split the French onion soup. It was good but needed something. Again, I'm being hyper critical. The soup was real beef broth but perhaps needed sherry? It was a touch burnt. It was still worth every bite. Side note: we ordered the house "best" wine--glad we didn't do the better. For 8.50 best is the way to go. Then steak. We wanna know how the hell the chef pulled this off. Strip steak that ate like a filet--cooked perfectly medium rare. And that sauce. That sauce! It's almost a shame that the fries were also so good. Finally instead of dessert (a hard decision), we tasted one of the more eclectic drinks--the one with a Thai pepper and ginger--so fun! Again really critical here but (and maybe we didn't order the most complimentary things) but but, each dish had a similar note and could have used some different flavors. To make a long story short. This is the kind of place that doesn't look like it's going to produce fine dining quality food, but when you get your dish and take a bite, it blows you away. I ordered the escargot and steak tartare, and my friend ordered the branzino. The escargot was served out of the shell and in a Dijon crème fraiche with caramelized pear onions. I was a little nervous to order this dish because I do not like mustard, but the server assured me that the Dijon flavor was not overpowering. He was absolutely correct. Escargot served out of the shower made it much easier to swallow around in the delicious sauce, though it shows might've been nice to scoop up some more of the sauce and not eat so much bread. The steak tartare was coated in a bone marrow vinaigrette. This really excited me because I love bone marrow. I thought this was a really nice way to bring out the flavor of the steak tartare without adding too many different flavors to it. I also really liked how there was not any raw onion mixed into the tartare. Too often places put onion in as a filler to have less meat. Not this place! The branzino, which I believe was a special, was probably my favorite dish. It was served with crispy skin on top, over a bed of pistachio romesco. All I can say, is that the dish was brilliant. I wish it was on their regular menu so I could go back and get it again. Now I'm gonna have to try to re-create it on my own. Great meal at The Good King Tavern tonight! Steak Frites were delicious and the sauce was amazing! The blend of peppercorns and Armagnac kept you coming back! We also tried the duck with lentil and radish. The confit duck leg was delicious and the radishes were a nice surprise! The lentils were perfectly cooked too! It was a birthday celebration so we had dessert too! Perfect vanilla and burnt orange creme brulee and amazing terrine au chocolate. They were perfect together! The hint of salt on the terrine made the chocolate especially luscious and the burnt orange was flowery and light. I couldn't have imagined a better dinner out! Loved the Good King Tavern! Started off with the cheese plate and escargot.... Both with a delicious bread and a cold beer did the trick. As a main, I had the tavern burger.... So good!! And of course the fries... could of eaten another plate of those salty treats! The vibe is super chill... great neighborhood spot! read more

Recently visited upon reading glowing reviews in the Inquirer. Had the Steak Frites and Escargot. To quote Craig Laban, "One of the city's definitive versions of steak frites." As for the escargot, it was simply delicious. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, while the service was prompt. The good king tavern could even be described as a French version of the British Dandelion. Bottom line, a fantastic date spot and must try for any fan of French food. read more

I've always had great experiences at TGK! The food is delicious and not insanely priced. There have been a couple years I've attended the Bastille Day celebrations with friends. Most recently my boyfriend and I came here on a date. We started with the delicata squash salad which was delicious. He had the mussels and I had the cheeseburger- both were amazing. Neither of us were in the mood to drink, but we did pop upstairs to their wine bar, Le Caveau, to check out the space. It feels upscale yet approachable. Highly recommend both businesses! read more
