The Grape Leaf has been a neighborhood staple on The Avenue for years and continues to please. I had been wanting to return for a while, as my last visit was probably a decade ago (!). A lot has changed since then, both for me and for The Avenue, but the Grape Leaf remains a great place for Mediterranean food, especially with friends and especially when the weather permits sitting on the patio. I visited recently with a friend who is a strict vegetarian. She was immediately impressed with the variety of options for her, and said, "I'm used to just having one option and going with that." Instead she took time to decide what she wanted while I gravitate almost immediately to the balsamic portobello chicken. We started the meal out with the hummus trio. Both of us loved he heat and flavor of the black bean hummus. I also got some baba famous hand loved the iteration that they serve at the Grape Leaf. Out entrees arrived an appropriate amount of time later, and I was immediately a fan of the balsamic chicken. Cooked to perfection -- tender and. It dry, it had a great tang of balsamic, and the accompanying red peppers weren't too rubbery, which they sometimes can be at other places. I filled up on appetizers and pita bread, so I was able to enjoy some of my entree in a carry out box for lunch the following day. It was just as delicious then, too. While there is a fantastic ice cream place just down the street, we both were too comfortably stuffed to partake. The Grape Leaf remains a great spot to visit, and one to add to your list to go to. It had been a few years since I have eaten here and had forgotten how good the Grape Leaf was. We order a gyro and a chicken shawarma wrap and our two side were the rice and lentils and the Greek salad. We asked to split the two sandwich's and sides for the two of us. No issue to split. The gyro is far the best in Louisville! Bypass all other restaurants in the mall and throughout the Louisville area if you want the best tasting, evenly portioned meat versus bread gyro. The same with the chicken shawarma wrap. The Greek salad was very good too. large bowl of salad fixings and a good dressing. The rice and lentils were very good too. I ordered the mezza sampler i chose the babaganoosh, avocado smash, and the spanikopita and added the grape leaves for an additional charge. The babaganoosh had an overly charred flavor that overpowers the essence of the actual eggplant. The avo smash had a verry organic taste with no added flavor but thats fine bc i enjoy plain avocados. The spanikopita was crispy and delightful and oddly the grape leaves were served very warm. For my entree i ordered the sumac chicken with saffron rice and cauliflower. Interestingly enough it was packed with layers of flavor and aromatic deliciousness that seemed more authentic. Everything about this place is delicious, understated decorative beauty... With the food and the smells it didn't have to be fancy! The wait staff surpassed expectations, and was very attentive and helpful in making menu selections. I came here on a Wednesday night right after work around 5:30 and my friends and I were the only ones there for the first few minutes, until a few groups of people started showing up. I love the patio area! It was gated so it didn't feel like street people were watching me eat. We ordered the hummus trio which was regular hummus, beets hummus, and some type of black bean hummus. I loved the beets one and was impressed with the flavors! Presentation was great too. Looking at the menu, the prices seemed kind of high, but you get two sides with the entree. I ordered a gyro with fries and rice with lentils. Everything tasted good but I barely ate it because I was so full from the appetizer (I ate half of it, since my friends weren't that hungry)! The worst part about this restaurant is that you can't eat everything on the menu. There are so many choices that are not part of a typical Mediterranean menu that it was next to impossible to decide. I had the chicken sumac and it was incredible - so flavorful and interesting (I had never used or had sumac before) that I had to stop myself from overeating and finishing the entire plate in 1 sitting. When my friend and I visited, we started our meal off with the spanakopita. The texture was delightful, it was flakey and buttery from the philo dough. My first time having it and I was so pleasantly surprised. I ordered the beef and lamb gyro as my entree and chose a salad to have as my side. It doesn't look like a lot of food but I had to take a box home because the gyro was very filling. My friend ordered the stewed veggies (eggplant, chickpeas, and other veggies) with rice as her side. It was all very delicious! Pricing: a little more expensive than other mediterranean joints I've been to but still not a bad deal. Parking: On street, not sure if they have a lot in the back. Well fellow yelpers, I don 't give 5 stars often, but when I do I have my reasons and I will list my first and foremost reason here and then will add my review of this business at a later time. I happened to be a victim of a burglary in the street behind The Grape Leaf. I found early this morning a mess scattered in my car, papers out of my glove compartment & storage pin and I was missing my wallet and CD case. Rushed to a conference for 3 hours then returned to where my car was parked. Little investigation & detective work, I found my CD case by the train track steps, N.Clifton Ave & Weikel Ave, but not my wallet. Knowing I had little cash but plenty of legal documents, passport, IDs, cards, SSN, I was hoping and thinking it might gotten tossed nearby as well. I looked for awhile but I didn't find it around. Either, gone, the train ran it over, or why not someone found it and handed it to a nearby business. This business was my first stop. Nabil, the owner, offered me to sit in his office, taught me how to use his security cameras system to see if any thing was captured by the track or the street, then offered to make me a drink then went MIA. Moments later, he returned with a handful of IDs, ATMs he dug out, himself out of a nearby trash can! Not mine, but what a freaking genuine person! He spoke to neighboring businesses, then explained to me how prisoners on parole have an office nearby to check in, He offered, sorry actually proceeded, to walk and search with me to the neighboring trash cans, leaf bags, cracks, train track and all around with me looking while I was asking him that he can stop and return to look after his business while I continue, I mean this dude appeared on a mission, but finally he agreed to let me continue searching on my own. Guess what, less than 20 minutes later, I returned to him to thank him, with my wallet in my hand after I found it following the direction of where he told me to look. He was pleased like it was his, and still offered me to wash my hands, sit and he was gonna still fix me something! I mean SERIOUSLY! "You are a neighbor, we take care of each other", even though, I never met this human before! Can't dismiss, the owner of Caffe Classico also walked with me looking around! I will forever give the grape leave my business. The food is truly great by the way! If I become a millionaire, I will just remodel the interior for him haha, but won't change anything else, not the food, not the amazing people behind it. Cheers for many humans like this! read more

The dimmed lighting accompanied by light music creates a tranquil & romantic atmosphere. The waitress was attentive & helpful while choosing an entree. You can't go wrong with the humus for starters. The texture is smooth, creamy & delicious. I selected the chicken kabobs, rice & black beans, house salad w/balsamic. The salad is fresh with chopped green & red peppers, pomegranate seeds, cucumbers, goat cheese, cherry tomatoes purple onions & baby spinach. The food get a whopping 5 stars. It's the service for me that overall takes it to 4 stars. Everything in the menu that can be made vegan I have tried and it is fantastic! I crave this food regularly. The spices are so bold, the veggies are always crisp. If you come you have to get the mint lemon aid ! As for the service, the 6 or so times I have been, each time has been awful service. Typically dealing with once you sit, you may be waiting 30/40-60 minutes before you are asked for you drink! We only come here when we have nothing else to do for the day. From the moment we were seated, I knew, that at the very least we were in for good service. Fortunately, the food was just as impressive! We were greeted and seated in a prompt and friendly fashion. We then had the Herculean task of picking what we wanted to eat from a list where each item sounded more delicious than the last. I settled on an avocado wrap with sides of fries, and rice with lentils. Why didn't I take a picture of my food? I was super hungry and the food looked so good, that by the time I remembered, the photo would have been pointless. The service is matched by the quality and tastiness of the food. Based on price, I had assumed that quality would be relatively high, while quantity would be medium to low. I was pleasantly surprised to find quantity and quality to both be at a great level. I love Mediterranean food - baba ghanoush, hummus, moussaka, baklava, spanakopita - all of it. I love chickpeas, spinach, eggplant, olive oil, pita bread, spices - and The Grape Leaf has got it. All of it. I dined here on a Wednesday evening. It was not busy, and the service was excellent. Our server was incredibly helpful, polite, and attentive, but also gave us enough space to enjoy our meal and have a conversation without feeling rushed or hurried. I am in love with the red lentil soup, the moussaka (recommended by our server), and the saffron rice with black beans. So many flavors, beautifully blended together into perfection. Not only is the food delicious, the portion sizes are very generous. I had enough left over for an entire lunch the next day. My only regret is that I couldn't order everything at once. The food was pretty delicious. My friend and I shared the appetizer sampler and I really enjoyed the baba ganoush. I had the scramble for my meal. It was quite a bit of food and very tasty. Service was pretty good too. The one problem was there were stinkbugs that kept showing up around the table....napkins were cloth so I didn't particularly feel like squishing them with the cloth napkins were good....not disposable enough. My friends and I came here today for lunch after a hike. We started by sharing the hummus which was absolutely delicious! It had a lot of flavor and cake with a decent amount of pita bread! I had the fatoush salad with a side of the balsamic chicken with mushrooms. The salad was so large that had I known how big it was, I probably wouldn't have added on the chicken! The salad was so tasty and the dressing that comes with it is packed with flavor. So light and refreshing but very very tasty. I can't wait to come back and have it again. The balsamic chicken with mushrooms was really good but didn't go with my salad so I think next time I wouldn't order that to go with it. But I will say that for $6 for the chicken add on, it was a very good portion size. I couldn't even eat more than a bites because I was full from the salad so now I have left overs and can't wait to eat these later! It's a neat little Mediterranean restaurant on Frankfort. I parked elsewhere with my friend and we walked together to the restaurant. Parking looks iffy, as everywhere on Frankfort, but you have to add in the intersection with the train tracks. Service was kind and just fine. I got the popular balsamic portabella chicken with sides of brown rice and green beans. I think everyone was right in that the chicken is overdone: it's dry and slightly chewy. The balsamic is pretty tangy, so by the end of the meal you need to balance it with something like a grain (brown rice for me). The green beans I think were tossed with some kind of broth/sauce/etc., but the beans themselves were similar to canned green beans (which I love, but not a fan when I go out). With multiple hits on the food, I give 3 stars. There's room for improvement, but it'll be a bit before I return again. read more

The interior here is rustic with a touch of contemporary. There really isn't much to look at, aside from some nice abstract paintings and a few wall sculptures. Much of the light during the day comes from the windows that run fully along side the front of the building. The food I ordered was a falafel sandwich with a side of broccoli and for a drink, a pomegranate mint lemonade. The falafel sandwich was very good, $8.75. The broccoli, I wish had a bit more flavor and the price for the portion of the broccoli is rather expensive, $4.50. The pomegranate mint lemonade was okay, it just was trouble sometimes getting everything through the straw and also it's quite expensive for a beverage, $6.00. read more

The Grape Leaf has one of the nicer patios in the city. It's shaded and covered with vines - you can barely hear Frankfort Avenue just a few feet away. So, if you're there and the sun's out, ask to sit outside. The food is also pretty dang good. My go-to is the vegetable kabob, which comes with a huge, plate-sized portion of slow-cooked zucchini, squash, spinach, peppers and a giant mushroom cap, all drowned in a balsamic vinaigrette. With the dinner portion, you get two sides (think it's one with the lunch portion). I usually get a salad and sauteed veggies. Basically, I end up with five pounds of delicious veggies. It's amazing. Small restaurant inside. Outdoor seating available. The menu is so vast it would be necessary to return to try many of the different food options. We sat outside near the sidewalk. The wisteria growing on the gate kept the foot and car traffic from being too much. Yet we could still look out onto the street. We had the mezza sampler. We chose baba ghanouj, grape leaves, and spanakopita. All three were very good and they were served with warm pita bread. Mike had the cauliflower salad with salmon. He said the salmon was cooked well and the lettuce pieces were very fresh and crispy. He also said there were a few surprises in his salad, like raisins and the cauliflower was flash fried or roasted. I tasted the cauliflower it was very good. I had the vegetarian moussaka, which is an eggplant dish. When it was brought to me I thought I had a plate of beef and gravy. But it wasn't. It was very good. I also had a Greek salad and sautéed greens. The Sautéed greens had a taste that wasn't very pleasant to me so those I did not finish them. The portions are large too. We definitely will return to this Mediterranean restaurant. You definitely need to try it. I am happy that Mike liked it, as he is very skeptical of different restaurants. @thegrapeleaf has one serious salad! This thing is huge! I got the avocado salata with shrimp . It was delicious and I ate it all, surprisingly. Comes with a hefty portion of avocado, spinach, romaine, green peppers, dressing and more pita bread. At first the shrimp didn't look like they were cooked enough but once I bit into it I realized they were perfect and well seasoned with good flavor. It was about $15 for the salad but in my opinion, a decent, healthy meal for the the price. We also ordered the sampler with avocado, baba ganush and added on grape leaves for an extra $3. I was dissapointed we only received 2 for an extra $3 as they were delicious and I can eat my weight in those. They should have given us more. My friend @jillomega ordered the gyro with fries and it was bigger than she was! I stole two of her fries and they were delicious. She definitely took home leftovers. BYO what? Since, evidently, I existed in a Ballard-y bubble of the East End, there were many places to which I never ventured in my home city. For the sake of maintaining some cred, I'm going to opine that The Grape Leaf is a relatively new establishment. After all, I am a long-time vet of Clifton's and can vividly remember how much those Jenny's commercials traumatized me (to the point that I couldn't even look at the building when passing by). So, I have been up and down this part of Frankfort many times, yes? Cred is back? Okay. Cool. Thanks. Back to TGL. Once I realized it existed, I came here to have a nice post-holiday meal with another old friend (gotta love get-togethers). The first thing I notice: it's a BYO spot. Awesome! Not so awesome: I came empty-handed. Luckily for me, my friend had a gallon of white wine with her (you see why we're friends). Glasses clinked, we were ready to eat. She'd already prepared me that the portions were on the large side, so a shared app and one entree would be more than enough. Please. These perky B cups don't share. But, it couldn't hurt to listen so share I did. I'm glad I shared. Sorta. The hummus is a delicious, creamy, rich, and garlicky as I could have wanted. I believe the pita was made with zaatar or some such spice which made the grazing episode even more enjoyable. Old friend. Wine. Pita. Hummus. Pretty good, huh? It gets better. It gets better in the form of lamb moussaka. I contemplated getting a veggie dish (and several looked very appealing), but the lamb moussaka called out to me. The marinated meat so tender it fell apart when my fork touched it called out. The tomatoes, chickpeas, onion, and eggplant called out to me. The prudent (not too much or too little) use of spice called out to me. The portion size mocked me. I am unused to eating large portions at Mediterranean restaurants, but I could get used to it. The Grape Leaf has grown up. (I on the other hand, have gotten old AF.) Instead of a divey vibe, the restaurant is more upscale casual. Everything from the menu to the decor is more polished and the space is much larger. Thankfully one thing that hasn't changed is the deliciousness of the food. The Hummus continues to rock and although the Veggie Samosas are now shaped like little egg rolls instead of triangles, they tasted great especially when dunked in the mustard sauce ($8 / $12.25). The lamb burger got a thumbs up from J ($12). Unsurprisingly, prices have gone up over the years. Instead of having two sides included with your meal (rice & salad), dishes now include one side and $2 for any additional sides. The balsamic dressing on the Greek Salad was flavorful and the Lentil Soup continues to be a favorite. Well, at least one of us is aging gracefully! read more

I love the food here. I've never had anything I've disliked. The outdoor seating area is wonderful. I've never actually eaten inside and I don't think I'd care to as the outdoor area is really what makes this place so special to me. It's a wonderful place to be on a warm morning or evening. The breakfast is great and they're never busy during breakfast so it's a great option if you're looking for a placed without a wait. I love the fact that you can bring your own alcohol as well. The weather was perfect; 75*F with little to no humidity and a beautiful, shaded outdoor patio on a Sunday evening. Perfect weather. So, what happened? I want to give the food 4 stars. Frankly, it was delicious. We'd ordered the grape leaf appetizer and a couple of gyros for dinner. I really enjoyed each. The flavors were uplifting, but grounded at the same time. The portions were large and pleasant. The Greek salad that accompanied my dinner as a side was exactly what I needed; the dark greens, yellow tomatoes and onions were perfectly offset by the feta. I was disappointed that the cauliflower saffron rice featured no cauliflower, but the lamb gyro was perfectly seasoned. I felt the service was lacking, however. When things got started, I was very pleased, but it all went downhill from there. Plates weren't taken away when empty, which was a problem given that flies and wasps were joining us on the patio. One of my favorite things about The Grape Leaf is that the don't serve alcohol so you can BYOB! We always bring our own bottle of wine and the server just hands us the opener and glasses and we are all set. It saves a lot of money bringing your own. I highly suggest stopping by The Wine Rack just down the street on Frankfort Ave and having them suggest a bottle that pairs well with your dinner. I like to start with the hummus and pita bread or the baba ghanouge- which is pureed egg plant- So tasty! With an entree you get to choose between the house or Greek salad- I picked the house and it was delicious. My husband had the Greek and it was also very good. They are very similiar. The only real difference I noticed was the dressing and nuts. For the main dish I had pomegranate balsamic chicken with garlic, onion, mushroom, extra virgin olive oil, and tzatziki on top of saffron cauliflower basmati rice. Tender, flavorful chicken and the rice was spot on. My husband had the lamb gyro and he must have loved it because I didn't even get a bite. Our server was polite and attentive and the atmosphere quiet and relaxing. They do have a really nice outdoor space for the warmer months. We will be back soon! read more

Gorgeous location in the heart of old Louisville. The ambience is casual and the decor is charming. Came here with my dad after the Louisville game on Saturday. They were busy but the service was great. Our waiter provided us with a couple of his favorites for options. We started with the hummus with the pita bread and the falafel. It was tasty and our waiter let us know the hummus was made fresh in house. I'm such a sucker for homemade hummus. Our main course was the lifts kufta platter with saffron basmati rice.
