I had dinner here on Saturday the 20th of August. The lamb gyro was very good as was the baklava. However, the fleas were another story. Every few minutes I had to wave my hand across my dinner to get rid of the fleas or gnats. Unfortunately they kept returning. Hence the 2 stars. Alway love going to the grape leaf, the hummus is the best and I love getting the Turkish coffee which is just awesome. This time besides the hummus I just got some lentil soup which again was just perfect. Only wish it hadn't been raining or I would have preferred to sit outside. read more

Very disappointed in this place. We have been putting off trying it for about a year. They have a pretty extensive gluten free menu-which is great! But the actual flavor of the food left me wanting something more. We ordered the falafel sandwich without the bread-so it would be GF. It came with the cucumber sauce, which was not good! It was tangy, it is definately not supposed to have that flavor. The saffron rice was bland but a good portion. We also ordered the Greek salad, very tastey.Their dressing was very flavorful, I would get the salad again. We ordered this whole meal to go, they told us 15 min. Jason went and he ended up waiting another 10-15 minutes-ugh. Prices were moderate. I doubt we would head back, we will probably try a different Greek establishment around the area. read more

I always get excited at the thought of having Mediterranean food. Grape Leaf is in my neighborhood, they have lots of vegetarian options, and it is so convenient. However, my excitement is usually tamed by the food. It's ok. It's not great. My favorite thing is the avocado wrap. It always a good mix of flavors. The sides you get with it are good for what they are. They don't necessarily feel they go with all the flavors, but it works, I guess. I like going to Grape Leaf if I'm with a group. If I'm on my own, I'll head somewhere else for Mediterranean food. read more

I've only ever gotten the gyros but they're always freshly made, generously portioned, and well seasoned. Also they make a great salad (it's not just a bowl of iceberg lettuce like some places will give you). If I'm ever in the Frankfort ave area, I like to stop by here for lunch. read more

Took a while to get our drinks ordered than when we did to get our food was a little stretch also. The food was outstanding and authentic! Very odd that honey mustard was my standard sauce. If you like Mediterranean flavors, check this place out. If not... Eh. I love Mediterranean so I enjoyed the avocado dip with fresh peppers on top served with warm pita. I also had the balsamic chicken, served with a spicy mustard and pita. My boyfriend however is not a fan of the flavors. He ordered the house salad with smoked salmon, and didn't like the herb balsamic dressing or the seasoned pita and hummus on the side. I gladly took the hummus off his hands and I thought it was delicious! Service can be slow, it's right down the street from my office and I had a hard time keeping the lunch at an hour. read more

I have dined in at the Grape Leaf many times, always satisfactory, especially the lamb stew, lentil soup, and roast lamb. I tried to order from Grape Leaf tonight, Sunday May 10, at 5:45pm. I called , was put on hold, then disconnected which also happened the last time I ordered from Grape Leaf. I called back but the phone rang and rang finally disconnecting. there were several attempts in between with busy signals. This is not the first time I have had problems ordering on other days so it is not just Mothers Day. I suggested you have more than one person working the phone lines. I'm giving this a 4 star, just because the salad was THAT amazing. Ok, there were only three customers there. A couple and myself. Should be simple to excellent service right? Placed my order beef moussaka with their saffron cauliflower rice and upgraded to the fattoush salad. First, the salad came (still no tea). The salad was Amazing! Super yummy! I ate the entire salad and still no tea. He brought my entree out and mentioned he was going to go check on my tea but instead sat down to gab with his coworkers. Next came my entree. I expected it to come out like a stew. What came out was disappointing. A flattened hamburger patty ( dry, flavorless) was served over a yummy stew of the other ingredients. The side of rice was also tasty, though the cauliflower was nearly nonexistent . And, I might add still no tea. In fact he finally showed up with the tea when he brought my to go box. By then it was too late because I was ready to leave. I'll definitely eat here again but I won't get the moussaka. The salad definitely! read more

This place was terrible! The food was bland and mediocre at best. None of us (family of three) finished the meal because the rice had no flavor and the chicken was so over-cooked that it was like eating pieces of leather. Even though we were all starving, we couldn't finish. The other thing that really bothered me was the fact that we got it delivered through post mates and the order stated one overpriced amount, while they charged us $15 more upon looking at the bank account. Highly underated restaurant in Louisville. They have the best hummus, greek salad, and gyro in the city. Located in the heart of Clifton on Frankfort Avenue it is extremely walkable before or after a meal. Nice staff and inviting space. Will be a regular for the years to come. read more

The Grape Leaf serves knock-out Mediterranean cuisine at a very reasonable price. My gripe with The Grape Leaf is that they seem perpetually understaffed. Every time I've been, I see one or at most two servers frenetically dashing around the restaurant trying to meet a constant demand. I suspect (but do not know) that this has something to do with the frequency of the mistakes in the orders, particularly take-out, where I'd say I've gotten the right order about 50 percent of the time. This complaint stretches across pre-Covid and Covid times. This evening's visit was no exception: two servers to take all the orders, punch them into the system, collect payment, run all the food, AND serve everyone in-house. It's great food, and good service especially if you consider how taxed the waitstaff is. I just wish they had an extra hand or two so I didn't feel guilty for ordering another Turkish coffee. read more

Let me start by saying I don't know a ton about Mediterranean food. It was either this place or Safier and I chose this place basically on a coin flip. I'd been craving a shawarma sandwich for a while, so I ordered the chicken shawarma with fries. The sandwich was a lot bigger than expected, but was one of the blandest things I've ever tasted. No seasoning whatsoever on the chicken. I ended up dipping it in whatever was closest to me. I had fries as a side because I was only feeling 50% Mediterranean at the time I guess. The good news? The fries were great. The bad news? They were 100% store bought. I only know this because I buy the exact same ones in the freezer aisle at Kroger. It's located in a great area. The majority of the food on Frankfort is top notch, but until I try something different here, I can't give it any more stars. read more

I am so happy I found this gem! We were just walking down the avenue and was looking for a snack. My god, do not let these pictures fool you, the portions are quite large. The gyros are very delicious, I want to say mainly it's the pita bread it came on. They were extremely fluffy with a chew. The hummus plate was rather large, good for a party of three, or plenty for two. I did get a taste of their Turkish coffee. And as someone who can't really appreciate dark roast coffee, it was quite lovely. You can definitely smell the rose petals. I know a lot of reviews say everything was just alright and nothing too extravagant but I think the atmosphere was really what made my meal. They have a beautiful yard in the back where you if you caught them on a Sunday day, it's golden. And it doesn't matter if you prefer to sit inside, its just as bright with big windows by your table. I had a lovely time there, everyone was so friendly and joking with each other. I really recommend it to anyone cursing the avenue waiting on the bakeries to open. read more

I was looking for a pretty quiet Sunday lunch out that wouldn't be too expensive. The decor is charming with a level of class that one would normally only hope for in a much more expensive joint. The shop only had a couple patrons but it was clear that they were regulars and knew each other and the staff which was really cool. I got the b shawarma wrap and was very satisfied with my choice. I had asked for no onions but received onions. I'm not allergic and it wasn't really a problem for me. The service was very good and I didn't need to add salt to the dish which is always a good sign. Of course the hummus. People travel from far and near for the silky, almost mousse-like chickpea dip. What you might not know is that this place also has a great breakfast menu that is available (I think) all the time. I get the breakfast burrito which is ginormous and comes with greasy super-fried super-delicious chips, guacamole, sour cream and salsa. My favorites: hummus, lentil soup (vegan!), zatar pita bread, Greek salad. Also great: falafel wrap, chicken gyro with mustard sauce, beef and lamb gyro, chicken kabob. Not so much: spanakopita is often undercooked to my taste. No alcohol, but you can BYOB and there is no corkage fee. Rice (lentil or cauliflower) and/or salad comes with most entrees, or if you're not so hungry you can order stuff a la carte and save yourself a few $. Tasteful decor. Great ladies' room. Large patio with seating under grape vine tendrils. The storefront and sign are not immediately obvious, but just find the stoplight at Frankfort and Clifton and you're there. read more

I went to The Grape Leaf last night with two girlfriends and feel the need to share my experience. It was a beautiful summer evening, and their patio was the perfect spot for a casual meal with friends. I love the BYOB (or wine) policy, too, which is the first I've seen in Louisville. The food itself was wonderful, reasonably priced, and I love the menu. HOWEVER. Our server, Anthony, was inept. After being seated, my two friends were served water (which we'd all asked for). Mine took about twenty minutes (and several reminders) to arrive. We also had an extremely long wait for our order to be taken. The table that came after us was waited on first and their food arrived first. We also had to continually remind our server to bring us the following: ice buckets, bottle openers, napkins/cutlery, and more. We even mentioned the poor service to two others on staff, but things did not change. He also seemed very slow in moving to serve us, and never directly apologized, just said "it's busy here" when it really didn't appear to be all that busy. This was one of the worst service experiences I've had in Louisville, and it was a real shame, because the place overall was wonderful. I will be back, but hope that next time I'll have a different waiter. read more

This place is so good I went back the next day for lunch. I had the rack of lamb and my wife had the lamb chops (which I, of course, took a bite of). Everything we got at dinner was off the chain. The pomengranat mint lemonade is awesome. And the portions are filling. It is a bit pricey though worth every penny. ...consistency... That's the word for Grape Leaf. The lack of that is... The next day I went for lunch and ordered the lamb shawarma, the lemonade again, and baba ganush. It was just so under seasoned and the lemonade looked better but didn't taste close to how it did the night before. But maybe I shouldn't have ordered expecting dinner quality ... but the price was just as much... a major let down. read more

I always ask myself why I don't visit The Grape Leaf more often. The service is always spot on, and the food always delicious. No alcohol sales, but you can bring your own wine. Wonderful hummus and baba ghanoush, but the (obvious) star is the grape leaves... tender, moist and full of flavor. I have converted grape leaf haters with these delights. Grape Leaf is one of my favorite places to eat. 1. You can eat healthfully while still eating tasty food and 2. You can bring your own wine (since you are eating healthy :). My favorite dishes are the vegetarian dishes. I've tried some of the chicken dishes and also the salmon, but I always go back to the veggie stuff. The wait staff is always open to my requests (bring cut up veggies with hummus instead of pita, etc) and super friendly. I ALWAYS order the hummus appetizer and the lentil soup. The salads are great. Falafel bomb. Mujadara on point. The outdoor area is really nice. Highly recommended. read more

I can't attest to the service because I've only ever gotten take out, but the take out service is fast and my experience with the waitresses was pleasant. Don't let the "bad service" reviews be a deterrent.. the food was AMAZING. They give enormous portions. I ordered a lamb shwarma sandwich, and I received a large helping of rice, the sandwich itself, and a meal-sized salad. All were amazing. read more

I have been coming to The Grape Leaf for quite some time. My last visit was very disappointing. The hummus is still delicious thank goodness and was my favorite part of the meal. My Greek salad was not good. They used to serve it with fresh fruit (melon, watermelon, pineapple) and a yummy vinaigrette dressing. This time I had one (yes one) piece of fruit which was a grape and it came with balsamic vinaigrette dressing (Greek salads come with Greek dressing. It's common sense). My mom's salad had NO fruit. What in the world?!?! Our waitress assured us it was the same salad but we knew better. She explained the lack of fruit was because the restaurant was trying to cut costs. It's funny how the price was still the same. The gyro was acceptable but nothing special and the tzatziki sauce tasted a bit off. What a shame. This restaurant used to be so so good. Another reason I'm only giving The Grape Leaf two stars is because as we were finishing up our dinner one of the waitresses dropped a glass in between the patio and the doorway leading to the sidewalk. I would say 20 more minutes went by in between us paying our bill and leaving. The broken glass was still there!! After 20 stinking minutes. That was an accident waiting to happen. Cleaning up the glass should have been top priority. Also on a side note. They no longer have the BYOB option which was so awesome! They also don't have a liquor license so if you want a glass of wine or a beer with dinner you're out of luck! I miss Zaytun so much! It was my favorite and a definite go-to. Since I won't be back to The Grape Leaf it looks like I'm going to have to find a new Mediterranean place to enjoy. read more

It feels fitting to start with their Grape Leaves, as we did the other night. Flavorful, and not at all dry. I liked that there was some sauce with them that nicely complemented the app. The dinner I had was fantastic. The vegetarian sampler - Hummus, Falafel, baba ghanouj, and spanakopita. The hummus and baba were sooo tasty. Not at all bland, perfectly smooth. Loved them. The Spanakopita (flaky pastry filled with something) was also quite nice. Wasn't a huge fan of the falafel, but their sauces they served fixed that right up. Not to mention the amazing Greek salad that they call a side that comes with most entrees (about 10-15 bucks each). Almost went back the next day for another. And the portions don't skimp. An entree is plenty. P.S. Don't forget the brown bag wine!! P.P.S. On a snowy day a few weeks back, my friends and I decided to have our customary Friday lunch at Grape Leaf. I've never tasted Mediterranean cuisine before and was really looking forward to it. As an avid 'no meat' guy, I was looking forward to taste the vegetarian dishes they offer. We reached in and got the largest table. I was looking for a hot beverage and the green tea was the best. I had a couple of cups of tea and decided to get the food already. My first bite of the 'vegetarian briani' (should have been biryani) and the bread with the curry of potato was delightful. The food tasted amazing and I was instantly a fan. It did not take me too long to complete my dish and then sipped on the tea some more. Well, to end this review - I will surely recommend the Grape Leaf to anyone who appreciates very good food. It's really very good. The ambiance too is very earthy and very relaxed. I'm looking forward to taking someone to the restaurant again, may be a date, may be. Go to Grape Leaf and I can assure you, you will be all smiles :)) read more

The Grape Leaf is one of those places I always forget about. I'm talking not only it's existence...but also how good it is. Their moussaka, hummus and lentil soup is unbelievably tasty for Mediterranean food that I feel as a cuisine can sometimes be just a little toooo subtle on the spices. What defines The Grape Leaf as a restaurant worthy of my 4-star fan-ship is it's ridiculously extensive menu. It's like they thought of everything you possibly could want to substitute or change in every possible way, shape or form and said "We're one step ahead of you Particular Patty... it's already on the menu, bam!" Bonus points for: BYO Bottle of wine, shaded outdoor patio for the summertime and it's open for lunch and dinner all 7 days a week plus brunch on weekends. read more

Let me start by saying I have eaten at this restaurant many times. Every time I've eaten there the food has been delicious. Unfortunately they have changed the patty for the lamb burger. It's not as flavorful as the past lamb burger . I gave 2 stars due to lamb burger disappoinment, but Greek salad was delicious. Overall still worth a visit, but the lamb burger change was not a good move . I would like them to go back to the original lamb burger as it was full of flavor when compared to what is served now. I got chicken shawarma and was hugely impressed with it. I could also eat about 15 helpings of the hummus with hot sauce (get it with carrots, it's delicious). I would pass on the rice as I found it a bit bland, and I did have to get extra hot sauce since the house made is not super spicy or particularly flavorful. If this place were in a city other than Louisville I'm afraid it wouldn't cut it. However, given there isn't much competition for Mediterranean in the area it's A-OK. My appetite wasn't large enough for an appetizer so unfortunately I didn't try the hummus. We had a Greek salad, Cesar salad (both excellent), chicken shrawma, and tenderloin kabobs and shared the walnut baklava (again excellent). The food is pretty good but when you are seated with menus and look at the menus, close them, set them on the edge of the table (common signal that one is ready to order, correct?) and then watch 3 different servers ignore you, clear tables, stand around at the counter, look at your table but never approach even when being motioned over, and when you finally give up and say 'Hey, we're ready to order" they go and argue over who is supposed to have been waiting on your table.... Well, let's just say it starts the meal off on the wrong foot. Service was fine once one of the servers (who was not one of the ignoring ones) actually took our order. Food was fine. I'd rather they mention that the couscous comes topped with stewed tomatos but it was still good, just not what I'd expected for a side. Large portions. read more

Stopped in on a quiet Sunday night and ordered stuffed grape leaves, chicken kebab and baklava. Our server seemed to have a pace that was more fast food than leisurely Sunday dinner - she seemed to be pushing us through slightly and definitely did not seem happy to be there. The food was almost entirely unmemorable. The spice on the chicken was good, but it was quite dry. The baklava was also a bit on the dry side. The side of rice and couscous came with some mostly unseasoned steamed veggies. For any entree over ten dollars, I expect a much higher quality. The one thing that saved this from a two-star review was the fact that my wife and I shared the kebab entree and they graciously split the single entree between two plates for us and - I think - gave us full portion of the side carbs and veggies each.
