This place is ascetically pleasing but that is it. We got seated fairly quickly. We sat for about 5-10 mins before anyone approached us to offer us water. Before that we noticed the pastry's are not on the menu. So we got up to check them out. The very nice woman with the locs at the pastry counter helped us figure out what we wanted but that we needed to order with our server. So we sat back down at our table. Finally someone asked for our drink order then the server told us to go back to the pastry counter to order and tell them the table number. Ok?! So we did just that about 5 mins later they gave away our table! So they apologized for the confusion and seated us on the sofa section until a table became available. Ok !? A table became available right next to us, so we sat down and not 5 mins later they asked if we could sit back down at the sofa cause they needed the table for a reservation they had. Alright! 10 mins has gone by and our coffees and our pastries we ordered 30 mins ago still haven't arrived. So I asked if we could have our coffee and pastries now and that it has been awhile. They apologized again for all the confusion. Our order finally showed up and sadly it was mediocre at best. Our check came with our coffee and pastries too. Not only did they not comp any of our items for all their mistakes but they also put the order of the people who they sat at our table. So we had to correct that as well and even then they did not try to make it right. $32/$35 for 2 coffees and 3 pastries. Such a disappointment. read more

I'm disappointed. I actually love this place and normally order Ful Madammas, but today decided to try something else. I ordered the WAGYU DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Two 4oz Wagyu Beef Patties, Arugula, Smoked Peppercorn Gruyere, Fancy Sauce, House Dill Pickle, Sesame Bun. I blame my disappointment on the cook, not the server; although I have to take some of the responsibility because of my failure to proclaim my expectations of how I wanted my burger cooked. What I got was a cremated burger. It was actually so well done that the edges were crunchy. It was without a hint of juicy and totally dry. It did not have enough Fancy Sauce to establish any flavor profile, although the burger itself does have the bones to be special. There was no pickle. And although I ordered Tater Tots, I got fries. The server should have noticed, but she didn't and I didn't say anything because it wasn't that big of a deal to me. I'm not a complainer and almost never send anything back, but this deserved rejection. I've been a cook in multiple venues from short-order and fine dining, to institutional foodservice. If I was this cook's boss, he would be getting a lecture on food presentation and attention to detail. It should be a felony to murder Wagyu beef like that. If I'd noticed that it was a $23 burger I probably would have sent it back. But like I said, my bad for not telling the server how I wanted it cooked. I'll be back, but I doubt I'll be ordering the burger. read more

The is the second time we came, since our first time was so Amazing! This time not at all! The second time ruined it for us the food was mediocre and the service was trash. Many of the food items we tried previously were no longer available. Which was the main reason for our return. Then on top of that our service was terrible. Our order was incorrect after asking for steak and eggs we instead received bacon and toast and then we waited another 40+ mins for it to be corrected. The pancakes were dry underwhelming . The brown butter was nothing great. The waitress continued to not bring items we requested several times. Over and over asking for ice and vanilla syrup for my latte. It was like talking to a wall.. The guy cleaning the table finally brought them out to us immediately when we asked. Our waitress was more busy making sure other tables were good and kept standing by the hostess stand majority of the time. The only thing the manager did to ensure we were "satisfied" was telling us 10-15 times that our food was coming out shortly, refilling a glass of water that I had barely drank and offer to box my food. Like boxing my food and wiping my table while I eat would make up for waiting 40 mins to an hour for a steak to come out and for it still be sub par. For a $77 tab you would have thought she'd done a lot more. read more

This place is such a disappointment. I don't understand all the hype around it. My boyfriend and I walked in to grab some lunch. It was pretty busy so we put our names down and sat at the espresso bar to maybe order a coffee while we wait. After 10 minutes of nobody even acknowledging us, I walked over to the hostess and asked if we may have the food cleared at the bar so we could order and eat. She was helpful and nice and let me know a table would be ready for us shortly. We were seated at a table and then the waiting began. First we waited 10 minutes for someone to come over and serve us water. After that, NOTHING. For about 25 minutes, we sat at the table waiting for someone to even acknowledge us. Nothing. I've been in the restaurant business for 7 years and have served over 1000 tables in my lifetime. The least you can do, if you are behind as a server, is ACKNOWLEDGE your table and let them know you are aware of them and will be with them shortly after you finish tending to the other tables. After 30 minutes of not a single person asking if we are okay or needed anything (nobody had taken our order still at this point) we decided to spend our money somewhere else. It's such a shame that a place with so much potential is ruined with poor staff and management. I hope they can get their shit together. read more

As to expect a new place is going to be busy. However, this is my third time in. All made with reservations, which I like. Keeps it well organized. The food is presentable and good. Although, we ordered the Belgian waffle, and it was hard and crunchy. We mentioned it to the lovely lady, but she down played what we said. She took it back to the kitchen and comes back saying " yea they were hard" Her tune changed after she realized our reaction to it was normal. Then one lady gave us the bill and started taking our utensils, as we weren't done. The waitress then came back to give us a bill again. If I can be in customer service and know how to treat people, I suggest they learn better customer service. It is important on repeat customers while also being satisfied. read more

For full disclosure, I am posting this review as an ex-employee, and I have not returned since my employment was terminated. I absolutely love the commoner. The food has always been great, my family has been multiple times and service was always great, and I've always been obsessed with the coffee. The environment is very quaint and it's absolutely the perfect place to go just for a drink and a snack to read or study or catch up with a friend. There is honestly only one reason I would not rate this place five stars. The manager Katherine was extremely tricky. She would be very sweet to customers, and then turn around and reprimand an employee in earshot of customers, and sometimes be very aggressive towards employees for simple mistakes. I myself noticed signs of being terminated and made a point of asking her if that was the case, and she gathered all the baristas working that day to say it was a mistake and it would be fixed, and after my shift had the shift lead inform me that I was in fact being terminated, and was not given a good reason why. I was told my performance was not up to the standards, even though I had been there since opening and had trained others in being a barista and had worked many a rush by myself and been complimented by Katherine herself on my performance. I still love this place and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone inquiring, but wish the Katherine was just a touch more diplomatic with her employees. read more

The good & the bad...I want to start out with saying that our food was fantastic. My friend & I ordered multiple items to share & we left with sweets from The Cannelle Patisserie. Everything was layered with flavors, some I wasn't expecting but was pleasantly surprised by. The wait time on food was a tad long, but in my opinion that's to be expected at a brunch spot at noon. Our waitress Elio was phenomenal. She had great recommendations when we were struggling with what to decide on. Even though the place was packed she was attentive & had a gentle calmness to her which was refreshing. Both my friend & I noticed that she seemed like a genuinely nice person, not putting on the "customer service face" that even I've been guilty of in my past. I didn't catch the young man's name at the patisserie (he had long hair in a pony tail) but he was super helpful & was very pleasant as well. He too helped us pick some desserts out & told us about the ones we weren't familiar with. Unfortunately all of that was overshadowed by a few things that left us turned off by the place. They seriously took away from what was supposed to be a special birthday/catch up meal between my friend & I. Our very first encounter was when my friend came through the door as I was parking. She called me as I was walking in & asked if I had a reservation, stating that the hostess said they were reservation only. I told my friend to let her know that I had called a couple hours ago & specifically stated that I didn't realize they did reservations until today (my bad, I know) but are walk-ins accepted & if so what is a typical wait time for 2? We had no problem waiting knowing it was my fault for a delay. I was told that at minimum it would be 30+ minutes or even longer depending on how busy they were. The hostess stated that they can refuse walk ins at anytime to leave room for the reservations. Now either she lied, or the person on the phone failed to mention that. I then told my friend to ask if we could sit at the bar. Only then was she offered that. I walked in literally a minute after she sat down & the hostess asked if I had a reservation & I told her I was meeting my friend here & she acted confused, like the conversation didn't just happen. I had to call my friend to find where she was. I got the catty vibe but didn't think anything until I sat down & my friend whispered "That hostess was rude as hell". That speaks volumes coming from my friend who likes everyone. Her words were "yeah, she's just one of those naturally catty women who come off snide", and you know what? She's right. Then it gets worse. While seated at the bar there was a petite woman with dark/purple hair & tattoos who was doing various things. Immediately I could tell she was stressed. I felt bad & hoped it was just a bad day, but she was completely unprofessional & basically ruined our dining experience. The whole time she was going on about them being understaffed (I get it girl but talk about that after work), about how she didn't understand why certain people where doing certain tasks & just generally complaining. What really irked me was the way she spoke/dealt with our server. It actually gave me second hand embarrassment & made me mad for her. I asked for regular whipped cream for my waffles. She came out with the canister & stated it would be a few minutes until it was ready as they had to make more. I said it was ok, not to worry about it & the other woman snapped "I don't even know why you're doing that, we're too busy" and she directed her to do something else. I don't know why she thinks dealing with a coworker/employee in that manner is ok but someone needs to tell her it's not. It made both my friend & I uncomfortable, especially since our server was just trying to be accommodating & she was doing a great job. The icing on the cake was the restroom. Had I walked in before my meal I wouldn't have eaten there. I actually took photos to show my friend once I got outside. I can tell that toilet hadn't been cleaned in a LONG time. I clean restrooms at a Ford building around the corner, I know what 1-2 day old dirty toilet/restroom looks like, this was not it. To me there's no excuse. The built up pee, dust & grime all over the place made me question what that back looks like if this is the front. I manage to wipe down/sanitize 12 restrooms (all with 3-8 toilets) every single night. Surely someone could clean a unisex restroom in a business that sells food during a pandemic. I really hope these were unusual for the place as we truly loved the food. We'll be back for another try, with a reservation - but you better believe I'm checking that cesspool of a restroom out before I order. Sanitation is kind of key to a diner when eating out. read more

We were seated 20 minutes later than our reservation time and at a table suited for 7/8 people (there were only three of us) which we were fine with initially because they seemed pretty busy and we figured that was all they had at the moment -- but right after we ordered the hostess came and asked if we could move for another family of 7 that had just gotten there, mind you she didn't even have another table ready that we could relocate to. We let her know that if she could get another one ready we would be more than willing to. She told us she would get back with us. Our food came and the salmon toast that i ordered had multiple brown spots on the fish and smelled so awful i had to spit it out into my napkin. Not only that, but less than halfway through us EATING she comes up to us AGAIN and tells us the table is ready and that she really needs to move us so that she could seat the family (this was unfortunate because we also made reservations and I didn't know that they prioritized one group over another). Moving at this moment seemed pointless as we were only going to be there for about another 15 min, so instead we just asked for the check and headed out. Our server was also really dry and didn't check in with us once. In the end they tried to make up for it by boxing our food (i don't know if it was an effort to get us to leave quicker or to save face). read more

I took my entire management team to the Commoner and we enjoyed a spectacular holiday luncheon. The venue, food and service were best in class. The entire staff was so attentive.
