I should visit Grey Dog more often - I have been to their Chelsea location, and I absolutely love the Mexican bowl. I came to their location in Flatiron. They seem to have the same menu. I didn't want to try anything new, so I ordered once the Mexican Bowl again. It is just so healthy and satisfying. The dish is comprised of perfectly cooked cilantro rice, smokey grilled Chipotle chicken, bright green avocado, refried beans, and the crunchy tortillas strips. I cannot get enough of this bowl. As for the ambiance - it's a lively and welcoming restaurant serving American food. It can get crowded and noisy. I recently went to The Grey Dog (my friend made a reservation for breakfast) and overall had a pretty mixed experience. On the positive side, we were seated relatively quickly, the food was really good, the prices felt reasonable, and everything came out fast. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the food. There were a few downsides though. The biggest issue at first was the waiting situation. There really isn't much of a waiting area, so while waiting to be seated, you're kind of crammed next to people actively eating. Since it was raining, waiting outside wasn't ideal either. We tried standing in the space behind the host stand and were immediately asked to move, which is fair, but it definitely highlighted the lack of space. Service was also a little inconsistent. The sugar wasn't already on the table, so we had to wait a bit to flag someone down for it. Not a huge deal, but a small detail that would've helped. We also got bottomless coffee, but our waiter rarely checked in. Another server eventually asked if we wanted refills when we were basically already done eating, which felt a little late. What honestly changed the experience for me though was an interaction with one of the hostesses. I got up to find the bathroom and while I was walking, one of the hosts (wearing pink) was walking extremely close behind me with another group she was seating. It felt awkward enough that I instinctively stopped and asked, "Sorry, is the bathroom this way?" and she just responded very flatly with "yup." No friendliness whatsoever. It was just a really uncomfortable interaction and the energy felt oddly dismissive. Thankfully, another hostess in a striped sweater noticed and kindly pointed out where the bathroom was, which I appreciated. Before that interaction, I honestly was willing to overlook the cramped waiting situation because I genuinely liked the food and atmosphere. But customer service really matters to me, and that interaction left a weird impression. It just felt unnecessarily cold and uncomfortable. I'd probably still come back for the food(maybe a different location?), but I do think the front-of-house experience could use some improvement. read more

I thought it'd be more of a mixed salad chopped up into bite sized pieces like at Chop't, but it wasn't. It was still fresh and light and nice little bistro fare. The Grey Dog has a comfortable Dive Bar type vibe, with cool music plus a bevy of staff that were efficient and energetic. For breakfast I was undecided between the Chicken and Waffles, which is not a usual for me or Grey Dog's breakfast. I ended up opting for the latter. The large platters consists of eggs any style, home fries, a choice of breakfast protein plus either French Toast or Pancakes. I asked if the Johnny Cakes (Cornmeal Pancakes) could be subbed instead, which was an easy yes. Choosing the Johnny Cakes, kicked up my breakfast flavors making it 10x's better than choosing Pancakes or French Toast. I noticed the pics on Yelp suggests that most choose either French Toast or regular Pancakes when opting for Grey Dog's Breakfast. If you're a fan of cornmeal type items then don't sleep on the Johnny Cakes! After breakfast, the question arose...'would you come here again?'
